That evening,  Reggie and Betty planned their strategy.
Reggie will pick Betty up before school and they will be seen arriving at school together. Betty reluctantly agreed.
"What’s the matter Betty?” Reggie asked, hearing her reluctance at this plan.
“ Maybe we should just be seen together for a little while before announcing we are going steady, you know not just show up together so suddenly.?’’
“Why?’ Reggie asked, getting really miffed.
"I don’t want to hurt Archie…”  Betty started to say
“Look Betty do we have a deal or not!?   If we are going to do this thing, then let’s just do it. I have never hurt you, well not seriously anyway. I’ve never lied to you. So what do you want to do here? It’s all or nothing. I always thought you were a woman of your word.  Reggie's face  was turning red, eyes getting dark in his anger.
With that she said
”OK Mantle. Pick me up in the morning at 7:25. We will announce our “news” tomorrow. Good night” and she slammed the phone down.
But she did have a slight smile on her face envisioning Archie’s face when he heard the news…..
Next day, Reggie stopped by Betty's house in the shiny new red mustang convertible his parents gave him for his 18^th birthday.
He looked extra fine this morning. He always wore expensive clothing. He was the best dressed teen in school.
reggie was happy, but hid this under his signature smirk.
Archie had called Betty this morning, saying he wanted to walk her to school so they could talk, but she told him Reggie was picking her up.
“Oh? I can get a ride with you two, then. You’re not mad at me, are you Bets?”
Archie had to make up for standing Betty up last night.
“No, Archiekins” she gushed
At the sound of his voice, she was almost ready to forgive him. Almost
“I’m sure Reggie won’t mind. Be here at 7: 25”
“Great Bets. Hey! Why is Reggie picking you up, ?” He asked, getting a little jealous
Betty had already hung up.
Betty had decided to vamp it up a bit to get Archie's attention today.
She really owed it to him for dumping her for Ronnie last night.
Betty wore her hair down in curly waves, wore a short black skirt with a tight blue blouse that hugged her curves and black high heels.
Just a hint of cleavage showing. Her mother raised her eye brows at this. Betty usually had her hair in a pony tail, jeans and sweater. She looked great.
“Good morning sweetie, you look so pretty. What’s going on?” Mrs Cooper asked.
“Just trying to make Archie jealous mom” Then she told her mother about the Deal.
“Hmmmm” Mrs. Cooper said, shaking her head “Teenagers! she thought. She knew Archie would get jealous. For a while until the next girl came along. Seen it all before. She did want to know why Reggie was doing this. Time to chat with Vicky Mantle……
‘I do hope Archie likes it’, Betty thought to herself. She felt a little self conscious as she usually didn’t wear her skirts this short. She resisted the urge to pull it down. She was ready.
When Reggie saw her, he almost had a heart attack. His mouth dropped open.
OMG!! What am I getting myself into? OK, calm down boy. I am her friend, not her man, at least not yet’, he thought, nearly in a panic. He was getting an erection. She could not know this!
He recovered quickly though. She missed his jaw dropping reaction.
“Good morning beautiful”, he said instead. Appearing oh so calm and unaffected. Hard on still there though. He hoped she didn't notice this.
Reggie planned show Betty how it felt for a real man to treat her right, and then she will be his. he hoped.
‘I just have to make her see Archie as I see him. A real asshole!!’
Betty was surprised when Reggie got out of the car and held the door open for her.
She did not expect him to be such a gentleman. No one was watching. He could save this for when Archie was around.
“Hey Bets, you really look beautiful!” He was practically gushing when he said this. And he meant it. 'Cool it Mantle'
" Aren't you going too far, Reggie? Who will believe you can be so nice, and such a gentleman?”
Betty did blush under his admiring gaze though.
“I thought we were going to make it look real. No one can see us here, you know” she added. It never occuredr to Betty that someone like Reggie had any real interest in her.
Reggie frowned. “Who says I'm pretending? You do look great. And  I always open doors for my dates.
“Oh, OK. Let's get going. Oh I forgot Archie is riding with us”
“I can’t wait for him. Got to see coach before basketball practice. Can’t be late!”
Reggie pulled off quickly, especially since he saw Archie leaving his house and walking towards them.
“Hey wait!” Betty and Archie both said to Reggie but he just kept going.
No way was he having that red haired asshole in the car with Betty there!
Once they were at school. Betty turned to Reggie and said,
“You know you really are a jerk, Mantle?!” Betty was angry.
Now Archie had to walk, by himself. Betty wanted the few minutes to be near him.
“Remember Blondie, we have a plan. You have to follow my lead for it to work, OK? "
Reggie struggled between anger and hurt at Betty and laughing at the look on Archie’s face.
“OK Reggie, I’m sorry”
“Am I still a jerk  Blondie? Remember our goal”
“No, Reg,  not right this minute anyway… I remember the Deal”
“Good. Show time”
He then placed his long, and (oh so) muscular arm around her shoulder.
Jughead was the first of the gang to see them walking together. It seemed Betty was molded into Reggie’s body. Jug saw the possessive arm around Betty's shoulders.
“What the hell!”
Jug stood there, looking at them both with his mouth open, the breakfast sandwich he was getting ready to bite into, forgotten, for the moment at least.
Jughead called to them-
“Hey Bets. Mantle, what are you doing with Betty? “
“Hey Jug, it's just to make Archie and Ronnie jealous but you have to keep it a secret from them, OK? Please keep our secret. We have a deal here, ” Betty had a pleading look in her eyes
Reggie said nothing. Just continued to stand there, his arm around Betty.
People looked at them in surprise-some jaw dropping, eyebrows raised, admiring the couple, or jealous glares..
“OK Bets. No one will hear about this from me. Reggie please don't hurt Bets”, Jughead begged him, still not eating.
“I won't do anything to hurt her Needle nose. Take it easy. Eat your food before it gets cold"
Reggie hated the fact people worried about him hurting Betty when it had always been Archie hurting her so deeply and so often. Why don’t people see who the real bad guy is here? He mentally shook his head.
Jug said to him as they entered the school
“I’ve got my eyes on you Mantle” And he ate his sandwich before entering the school.
Betty reluctantly took Reggie's arm and they entered the school. He removed her arm and placed his around her shoulder again.
They encountered even more surprised looks in the hallway.
Even the teachers were showing surprised faces.
Betty felt very uncomfortable with all the attention they were getting,
“Why are they staring at us so hard?” she grumbled
“Hey Babe, you are with Mantle the magnificent. I’m making you look good” He looked very smug.
Betty shrugged his arm off her shoulder. “I have to get some books”, she said. “I’ll see you later” She really wanted to get away from Reggie
“Oh no you don’t get away that easy”. Mantle went to her locker with her. Holding her hand this time. He knew Betty very well.
When the new couple stopped at Betty's locker, Veronica saw them.
“Hey Reg, Betty, what's going on?” Veronica called out to them. She raised her eyebrows at the couple holding hands.
And at Betty’s mini skirt and high heeled shoes.
“Hey guys. What’s with the hand holding? Did you trip in those heels Betty? “Veronica asked, trying to be funny.
“Ronnie. I decided to ask Betty to be my girl and she said yes. ” Reggie said, smirking as usual. kissing Betty’s hand to emphasize his words.
“Whaaa! And you didn’t tell me Betty?” Veronica shouted. “Tell me you’re joking” Veronica said.
“It’s true Ronnie. You weren’t at home, remember oh, and I do know how to walk in high heels, you know:” Betty answered.
She could not believe Ronnie. As if no guy found her attractive! Even if she and Reggie were playing parts he had made her feel wanted. Ronnie’s words stung her to say the least. Some best friend.
At that moment Archie arrived. He was out of breath because he ran all the way to school.
Archie planned on having it out with that rat, Mantle.
“Why did you drive off like that Mantle??? Hey what’s going on here?”
Archie yelled this very loud. He had stopped in his tracks. He could not believe his eyes!
Reggie and Betty holding hands?
Betty tried hard to keep a smile off of her face. ‘It’s working already’ she thought
“Whatcha gonna do bout it Red?” Reggie looked menacingly at Archie. Daring him to start something. God he was so sick of this dude!
“Yes you two , there's no more triangle, Archie is yours Ron . I’m with Reggie now”
Betty cut in here. She did not want them fighting. What if Reggie hurt Archie?
Archie and Veronica both looked at Reggie and Betty like they both 'grew two heads or something', Reggie thought.
“Hey Betty, what do you mean by this ? Why him of all people? You know he is no good” Archie said, looking daggers at Reggie.
Betty answered hotly, “Why not? You obviously don't have time for me! You broke our date last night to take Ronnie out. I’m sick of it! Reggie wants to be with me, and no one else, so fuck off!”
'Why was it that hard to believe a hot guy like Reggie wanted her! Shit!'
The three looked quite shocked at Betty Cooper, the good girl using such language!
“I’m sorry about last night Betty. Bets you know I have a memory problem with my dates, but today I have witnesses” Archie said, smiling at Betty.
Archie was also admiring how she looked today.
" You look great Bets. I wanted to ask you to the prom. Reggie, I thought you were taking Cheryl to prom” Archie added.
Veronica looked angrily at Archie now. What's Archie up to?
“You got that wrong, fuck face!.” Reggie clenched his fists, itching for a fight.
“Or Midge”, Ronnie added
“Wrong again sugar. I’m tired of Moose rearranging my face”
Ronnie then said. “Well then ok, then. Reggie, you can take me. It seems Archie owes Betty a date to make up for standing her up last night”
Veronica would not have to spend any money, or arrive to prom in Archie’s old car.
She liked Reggie to take her to the fancy high society events.
Ronnie batted her eyes and gave him “the look”. You know, the one that turns all men into jelly, even her daddy, Hiram Lodge, billionaire extraordinaire can’t resist it. .
But Reggie was immune to “the look”, especially when Betty was around (and not drooling after Archie that is.) One thing about Reggie. He had a very strong will and was the only guy who could handle Veronica Lodge.
Reggie had enough of this crap. Archie and Ronnie were both really pissing him off! So, before Betty could forget she was supposed to be his "girl" and accepted Archie’s date, Reggie cut Ronnie off,
“Sorry Doll and Meathead, I’m taking Betty to prom. We are going steady, remember?”
Betty caught herself, looking at Reggie in shock. He said that with so much feeling. It made her almost believe she was his girl.
“Uhh, yeah. Sorry Arch. Can't go with you. I'm Reggie's girl”. She stuttered. Reggie was right. She was Thrilled Archie asked her to prom.
With that, the new couple walked off, Reggie’s arm across Betty’s shoulder, Betty was leaning into him, it seemed, to Archie.
Reggie’s hold on Betty looked like he definitely possessed her. And he dared anyone to separate them. ‘Like Moose and Midge’, Archie thought angrily.
“WHAT’s up with that?” Archie said to no one in particular. Jug heard him though. Jug stopped Archie as he took off after the couple. Archie had been in the process of snatching Reggie's arm from around Betty, when Jug pulled him back.
Reggie and Betty just kept walking
“Archie have you lost your mind!? I'm following your lead because Betty deserves better than Reggie” Ronnie said
“Leave them alone Archie! Do you want detention?” Jug said.
“Whose side are you on, anyway, Jug? You know Mantle! He only wants one thing from a girl. I won’t let him hurt her! And I thought Betty was your best friend Ron!.” Archie hissed loudly.
“She is Archie. Oh OK. We have to do something to break them up. Reggie is such a dog. I don’t want him to hurt Betty either” Ronnie agreed with Archie, but for her own reasons.
“I won’t let her be hurt by you Ronnie, Mantle .or even you Arch” Jug answered. “Betty is my friend. I will watch Reggie. And you” Jughead meant it.
Archie calmed down a little, but he was feeling a little betrayed by his best friend.
Archie had even forgotten to kiss Ronnie as he stomped off to his first class.
Jug shook his head, knowing no good will come from this deal thing.
There is one thing about Jughead, people tended for forget. That is, how observant and intelligent he is. He is not a just a food connoisseur (glutton),Or a lazy sloth.  He was actually as smart as Dilton, but hid it. Now he started talking to a few friends. Hmm, He needed some spies…… Jughead  was careful not to reveal the secret about “the Deal”.
Reggie dropped Betty off at her math class. He was going the gym for basketball practice.
“See you later babe”
He then pressed his lips, first to Betty’s cheek, moving his lips across her cheeks to her, very soft lips, oh so sweetly kissed her, allowing his tongue to enter her mouth, again very gentle. His mouth tasted of peppermint.
Betty almost fainted at the sensation of his mouth on hers. It was intense!
Betty felt a tingling in her nether region.
Then Reggie turned and walked off, his walk like a panther waiting to strike some helpless prey. Reggie also was making heads turn- female, (and a few male) heads as he passed. They were surely admiring his walk and his ass.
Betty just stood there, watching him walk away, feeling a little breathless.
‘The nerve of that guy. I told him no kissing’ She touched her lips thoughtfully
'I'm just breathless from the excitement of seeing Archie so jealous', she thought. She still tingled.
.Archie and Reggie had gym together. They were like two caged tigers, eyeing each other for the right to have the girl. They each tried to get under the other’s skin-Not throwing the ball to the other when he had a good shot, one making the other miss easy shots or foul balls.
Just not playing as a team. Even having episodes of hitting each other with the ball, hard enough to leave bruises, and Archie tripping up Reggie as he was making a play. Intentional foul called.
No fighting though. Coach Clayton would have none of this on his team. Neither boy wanted to get kicked off the team. Coach was very annoyed with the two boys. He made them both run 5 laps before going home. That should cool them down. He knew it was probably about some girl.
Betty was to meet Reggie after school. Reggie was actually exhausted, but would not cancel any dates with Betty
She got enough of that from Archie.
Betty was waiting for Reggie outside, talking to Nancy and Ethel.
They wanted all the details of how she and Reggie hooked up. The whole school knew about them now.
Betty soon spotted Reggie, leaving the school, with Cheryl Blossom glued to his side, it seemed to Betty. Cheryl was holding Reggie's arm close to her breasts, rubbing against him, and batting her eyes at him.
Giving him sympathy for having such a grueling basketball session.
And offering a 'hot time at her place, lover, to unwind' She whispered, her breath hot in his ear.
(Unknown to both, this was the first of many schemes set up by Archie and/or Veronica in hopes of breaking them up)
Betty felt her face get hot, and she felt very angry at the sight of the two together so intimately.
“Hey babe….” Reggie started to say to Betty.
Betty smiled at him, gritting her teeth. “Hi Reg , uh hi, Cheryl.”
Reggie seems to have his eyes glued at the level of Cheryl’s chest.
Cheryl did not even look at Betty. Cheryl just kept hanging on to Reggie. Betty then took (no, grabbed ) Reggie’s arm roughly, tugging him away from Cheryl’s grasp.
Cheryl huffed at this and stomped away.
Betty was pissed. She let go of Reggie’s arm, turned and stalked off, forgetting to say goodbye to her friends.
Veronica had told Cheryl Reggie wanted her to meet him after school.
Ethel and Nancy smiled at each other. “ Do I sense a lover’s spat? Let’s go Nance”, Ethel said. They soon headed off to Pop’s to meet Jug and Chuck.
Reggie ran after Betty, grabbing her arm to swing her around.
“Why did you leave like that?”
"It seemed you were too busy for me, what with Cheryl Boobs Blossom hanging on to you!
"Look Mantle, this was all your idea. You couldn't even make it look good for even one day. I bet you didn’t tell her we were going steady did you! Shit!! You are a Rat fink!”
Betty felt tears sting her eyes as she walked away again. How would she keep Archie being jealous now?? Now Reggie had her cursing. This is too much! He couldn't even last a day!
Reggie came after her again, this time smirking at her.
“Cheryl caught me as I was leaving school. She heard about us already. The whole school knows about us. We were just talking, Bets”
“Hey, are you jealous Cooper?” He asked, grinning widely at her now.
“No! Why should I be? I don’t care what you do. I just want Archie jealous, remember? We are just making believe anyway” Betty said, turning red.
“OK, then make believe about this!” Angry that Betty even mentioned Andrews   Reggie grabbed her, pulled her close, and began to kiss her, gently sliding his tongue into her mouth. Then the kiss intensified as she leaned into him. He began to kiss her more urgently, desire overwhelming him.
He was actually the first one to pull away, watching her face. Her eyes were closed.
“Look Bets, I ‘m way out of line. I shouldn’t have kissed you...OOPS,
I forgot something in my locker. Be right back” He had to get out of there for a moment.
“Wait Reggie!” But he just kept going running actually.
Betty wondered what was wrong with him shrugging her shoulders as she waited for him to return. If she only knew.
Reggie had to go before she got the shock of her life. He needed a moment alone, and quick.
He had a raging hard on! Worse than this morning.
No time for a cold shower. He was not called “Mantle the Magnificent’ for nothing!
It took him 20 minutes to get back to normal. At this rate, he will have 'blue balls for sure', or go insane.
Reggie took Betty bowling when he returned. His weariness passed for some reason.
They needed to do something safe while he continued to get himself under control. He was always in control. Usually. But not when around Betty.
Guess who was at the bowling alley? They tried to join Betty and Reggie, but was refused.
Reggie got tired of bowling gutter balls. He was too angry to bowl well. He was an excellent bowler. This was because Archie just kept staring at Betty.
Reggie was happy with  the triumphant look Betty gave him though. She had beat  Reggie bowling. They left after 3 games.
Reggie didn’t notice that Ronnie was looking at him, longingly.
Reggie took Betty home way before curfew. He had some thinking to do.
They did not mention the kiss they shared earlier.

Later that evening Reggie called Betty.
“ Look babe, I just need you to know that I thoroughly enjoyed kissing you. I know you have it in your mind you did something wrong, but you didn’t. I shouldn't have forced it on you. You made it clear you didn’t want me to kiss you. So because of that I am sorry. I will pick you up before school tomorrow. Good night Betts” Then he hung up.
Betty didn’t get a chance to tell him she really enjoyed it. Reggie should not apologize, just keep doing it. Maybe it was just as well he didn’t know that. The deal was temporary after all. She was in love with Archie and Reggie loved Ronnie.
Betty felt butterflies just thinking of that kiss.
She was not aware that she went to bed with a smile on her face.
She did not think of Archie too much since this morning. She did not seem to notice this fact either.
