Intimacy and sentiment did not interrupt duty. Thaal Sinestro was back to his own routine less than a half hour after Abin Sur had responded to the call of the ring. Unable to sleep, he decided to patrol instead. A true member of the Green Lantern Corps did not simply wait idly for disaster to rear its head, and instead had to be vigilant.
News came within the same day of what Abin had discovered. Mass hysteria had stricken a planet several sectors away, and though the planet was vast, the swell of panic which struck it spread through the territories like wildfire. The Ungaran protector had joined two more of his comrades to control the swarms of madness, and though they finally succeeded, it was the source of the phenomena that eluded them.
Something was wrong. Something unseen. Abin, in his instinct sharpened by countless years as a Green Lantern, could nearly taste the musk of something wicked and elusive. This hysteria was an outbreak of base and primitive fear. And whatever had caused it was still somewhere in never-ending space, ready to strike again.
The thought never occurred to any Lantern of the one name which might have been the culprit. That name belonged to a disease of a creature that Abin himself had imprisoned long ago. There could be no possibility of its influence. Even the Guardians would not so much as consider the chances of…
… of Parallax.
“What weighs on your mind?” Sinestro asked his former mentor. Abin wanted to lie, but the two Lanterns had known each other far too long to mask dishonesty between them. Even so, the Ungaran knew he should never lie to the one individual he trusted most of all, one that he cared for so deeply.
“The danger I felt,” he answered. “When…” he paused, considering the words he would use. The reserved nature of the Korugaran was such that they had made a silent agreement long ago to keep talk of their intimate moments to a minimum, and on any other day, the thought would have made Abin Sur laugh. But now little could lift his spirit.
“When I awoke,” he finally said. “It still lingers. It is out there somewhere.” He looked out past the cliff where he and his comrade stood, surveying the beautiful, buzzing surface of Oa. So many had been brought to this cause, to the green magnificence. How many would be required to seek out this hidden evil? How many would return from the search?
“We must find it,” he said gravely. “We must find it and prevent it from further destruction. Planet Edar’s mass hysteria killed thousands of its people. That was only a small example of what this presence is capable of.”
Sinestro was growing impatient, and his jaw tightened when his mentor did not continue.
“There is still something you will not tell me.” His tone was of a warrior who wordlessly commanded respect from all, especially his fellow Green Lanterns. But though the Korugaran’s voice read of urgency, his comrade could sense no fear from him.
Indeed, Thaal Sinestro was the definitive leader of the Corps.
“Something I thought I had done away with a long time ago,” Abin simply replied, not even daring to speak the entity’s name. Sinestro’s brow knitted, and he was clearly unsatisfied with the cryptic answer.
“I hope I am wrong.” The Ungaran gave a sad smile. “But I seldom am.”
Sinestro mulled over the notion, and a ghost of a smile briefly marked his features.
“For your sake – and your reputation – I hope you are. I will gather a search party.”
