Chapter Two: About time!
One long and uneventful week later Andrea was about to give up. They'd spent every night out in the city, going to movies, theaters, museums, some of them walking by particularly dark and dangerous looking alleys in hopes for something...but they'd gotten nothing. Andrea wasn't at all patient and that night the company she was keeping wasn't either.
"Don't I look muggable?? I think I do! I'm small...I'm a girl!! Why the heck am I not getting mugged??" Catey ranted as they stood in line at Vinnie's Pizzeria waiting for their order.
Andrea smiled apologetically to the people giving them strange looks, making a circular motion next to her head to indicate that poor Catey had lost it. "Keep it down sweetie, you're drawing an unwanted crowd," she murmured, "and I don't think muggable is even a word."
Catey's shoulders drooped and she crossed her arms over her chest, blowing strands of honey colored hair out of her face in the process. "Sorry...I'm just frustrated."
The guy at the counter called out their number and Andrea forced her way though the congested group of people, dragging Catey behind her. "I know you're frustrated. I am too...trust me," she said, waving to the counter guy and grabbing the pizza's as he handed them to her. She passed one back to Catey and took her free hand once more to help her plow her way through the crowd. "God, it's insane in here!"
Behind her Catey laughed, carefully maneuvering her pizza around people she passed. "Just remember Drea...this was your idea! I wanted room service."
"Yeah well...I come from a small town way up north where original pizza places do not exist. Can't really help it if I want to broaden my culinary horizons!"
Catey's only reply was to smile and roll her eyes. As they neared the exit someone bumped into her and she lost not only her grip on Andrea's hand but her grip on the pizza as well just as a guy in baggy jeans and an orange hooded sweatshirt walked through the door. Muttering a few choice words, Catey made a frantic attempt to regain her hold on the pizza box and ran right into the new comer.
"Whoa! No worries babe, I got it," the stranger said, catching her and the pizza before it splattered onto the far from sanitary floor.
Feeling mortification heat her cheeks, Catey used the stranger for leverage and stood up straight. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she stammered, "I should have watched where I was going."
"Don't worry about it," he said kindly as he handed her pizza back to her, "no harm done."
"Thank you." She smiled up at him, unable to get a good look at his shadowed face before she scampered off after Andrea. It was only when she was outside, breathing the smoggy New York air, that she realized who that voice belonged to. "Oh my good freakin’ cow..." she whispered, then a little louder, "Oh…my…good…freakin…cow!! Drea! Drea...I think I just ran into..." her voice died away as she realized that Drea was nowhere in sight. "Drea?"
A muffled cry of outrage came from an alley not even five feet away. A cry that sounded unmistakably like Andrea's.
"Drea!" Catey gasped, forgetting about her encounter and taking off at a run for the alley.
Hearing her friend call out for her, Andrea doubled her efforts to escape from the man who had grabbed her. She struggled in his hold, thrashing her arms and legs, making attempts to bite at the fleshy hand covering her mouth and cutting off her air supply. Finally her teeth found a nice chuck of skin and she bit down hard. Her attacker swore and his hold on her slackened enough for her to slide free.
"Catey honey, run back to the hotel!" she screamed, but she knew Catey wouldn't listen. Besides...it had been Andrea who had told them to try and get mugged. At the time though she didn't realize just how frightening such an event would be. Andrea made a run for the opening of the alley just as Catey appeared there and a hand closed around her wrist, jerking her roughly around and throwing her against the brick wall of one of the buildings.
Biting back a cry as her attacker manhandled her, she searched frantically for a weapon or something that would offer even the tiniest amount of help and she found her one small chance at a decent escape. Her survival instincts kicked into high gear, a picture of her lovely daughter’s face floating in her mind and reminding her of the very little person she had to fight for. Ignoring Catey's frantic cries, Andrea went limp, letting her attacker make a move on her. Just as she expected him to, he tried to kiss her, pressing his tongue against her firmly sealed lips. When he persisted she opened her mouth and immediately bit down on his tongue.
"You bitch!" her attacker screamed, his cold gray eyes alight with rage. Now that she could clearly see him and make out the pathetic looking goatee, the dark black hair slicked back away from his long face and the ragged attire, she knew right away what she was looking at. The dragon tattoo snaking its way up his arm said it all.
Deciding she had seen enough, she jumped up, her hands closing around the rung of a fire escape ladder just as the man came for her again. She kicked out and her foot connected with his face, sending him flying sideways.
"Asshole," she muttered, dropping back to the ground.
"Drea! Are you okay?" Catey asked, running up to her.
She nodded, giving the younger woman a tired smile. "I think I underestimated our bait," she muttered, drawing a relieved laugh from Catey. Andrea turned towards the opening of the alley, more then ready to go back home, and the smile disappeared from her face. "I think I really...really underestimated our bait."
Catey gave her a confused look and whipped around, a startled gasp leaving her mouth when she saw the group of tattooed, weapon wielding men standing around them in a half circle. "Where is Kris when you need her?" she whispered, swallowing the lump of fear that had risen in her throat.
The group parted, making way for Andrea's attacker who whipped blood from his chin as he moved in front of the gang. "You're going to pay for that," he whispered menacingly.
Unable to stop herself, Andrea laughed. "Oh come on! That's all you can come up with? Do you have any idea how many times that line is used in books and movies? I'll have to dock you points for lack of creativity buddy," she muttered.
"How about kill 'em," the man sneered, "that good enough for you?”
“I think you’re really selling yourself short here. I mean…was I supposed to be terrified by that? Now you’re losing points for effort.”
“Drea…stop while you’re ahead,” Catey pleaded beside her, inching back away from the crowd of angered men.
“But Catey, I love witty banter. It’s so cliché,” Andrea went on, acting as if she didn’t realize how quickly the men’s tempers were rising. “And besides, at least I haven’t started cracking on his clothing yet…which I could do. I mean it’s hideous.”
“Get ‘em!” the man in question screamed, shaking with rage.
Quickly putting herself between Catey and the gang of men, Andrea took on the first Purple Dragon to attack. As she had assumed, she was a skilled fighter and could hold her own in a fight. It soon became apparent that Catey could as well. She joined in the fray, taking out two men with an almost childlike excitement.
Laughing at her enthusiasm, Andrea ducked under the arm of a large man as he lunged at her. “Having fun Catey?” she asked, picking up a discarded lead pipe that had been dropped by one of her previous assailants and swinging it at her current opponent.
“I’m about to start countin’ like Legolas did!” Catey yelped, proving her point by planting her fist in the face of a man with ridiculous spiked blonde hair. “Three!!”
As the fight went on though, the two women quickly realized that although their strength had increased, they were not going to win this fight. They were too far outnumbered and couldn’t keep their eyes on every one of their enemies. The men, also realizing this, started ganging up, fighting them three or four at a time, striking out at each girl when she was too preoccupied trying to fend off someone else.
Blocking one guy’s fist as it came at her, Andrea cried out in pain as another man used her distraction to his advantage, placing a leveling blow in her mid back and sending her to her knees.
“See what happens when ya get cocky?” her original attacker asked, grabbing her by the hair and yanking her to her feet. “And you’re not the only one that’ll suffer. We’re gonna make sure you’re little friend suffers first for your smart mouth…and you get to watch.”
Andrea jerked around, her eyes widening when they fell upon Catey. She lay on the ground, her small body pinned beneath the large form of a bald, hulking man who smiled sadistically as he slowly drug a deadly blade over her neck, causing her to whimper.
“No! Ca-.” The sound of Andrea’s panicked cry was cut off, dying on a chocked gasp as someone wrapped a chain around her neck, strangling her. She clawed at the chain, desperate to get free, but it was only pulled tighter, the cold links biting into her flesh. Spots swam before her eyes, darkness swam just out of reach and she could hear the far off sound of Catey’s scream. But there was nothing she could do. She was helpless. All she could do was let the black void that beckoned her claim its victim.
Cold terror washed over Catey as she watched her friends lifeless body crumple to the ground. “Drea!” she sobbed, closing her eyes against the pain.
“Oh you’ll be joinin’ her soon enough cutie…after I’ve had my fun with you,” the man crushing her said, leering at her.
“No offense dude, but that kinda looks like the last thing she wants,” a voice said, clearly startling several of the Purple Dragons.
The man holding her twisted around, furious that he was being interrupted and a fist flew into his face, breaking his nose with a sickening crack. That same hand grabbed a fistful of his shirt, hauling the now bleeding man up.
Catey caught only a glimpse of her rescuer before all hell broke loose. The Purple Dragons seemed to forget all about the two women they had been determined to kill and focused only on whoever had come to save them.
Seizing the opportunity, Catey scrambled to her feet and ran to where Andrea lay unmoving. She went to her knees beside her fallen friend, taking her wrist to feel for a pulse. It was weak…but it was there. “Oh thank God,” Catey breathed. She pulled the older woman’s head into her lap, feeling as if that one small gesture would offer all the protection in the world and then she turned to watch the fight progress.
It was clear that the Purple Dragon’s were losing…badly. Whoever they were up against was obviously a skilled fighter. Or fighters, Catey thought hopefully. She couldn’t be positive but she was almost sure their rescuers were the ones they’d been searching for. “Drea…hun, your plan was insane,” she whispered to the unconscious blond, “but I think it actually worked.”
Not even a minute later the remaining gang members ran off, leaving behind those whose limp bodies littered the cold ground.
“Now that was fun,” a voice said from somewhere in the shadows. Hearing the rough accent, Catey smiled. It was them! They stepped into the light, each of them wearing baggy jeans, hooded sweatshirts and smug grins. When they saw her however their smiles faded and they visibly tensed.
They think I’m going to freak out, Catey thought, biting back a laugh. There were three of them and she could tell by the colors they wore who was who. Standing before her was Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. Don’t use their names, she reminded herself, offering them a simple and pleasant, “hello.”
They exchanged surprised looks and the one in orange smiled. “You okay babe?” he asked, approaching her with the confidence the other two, for the moment, lacked.
She returned his smile, nodding. “I’m fine. You know, that’s twice tonight you’ve come to my rescue?”
“I do what I can,” he said, chuckling. “My name’s Michelangelo. Mikey for short.”
Heart pounding furiously, she took the hand he offered. “Caitlyn. Catey. Nice to meet you.”
“Ditto. Is this your friend?” he asked, nodding down at Andrea.
Catey’s smile was immediately replaced by a worried frown. “Yeah. She’s okay. She’s just unconscious.”
“What happened to her?” the one Catey knew as Raphael asked, kneeling on the opposite side of Andrea.
“One of those jerks strangled her with a chain.”
Noticing the link shaped bruises running around the young woman’s neck, Raph frowned, struggling to keep his anger in check. Those jerk off’s have gone too damn far this time, he thought, gently tracing the curved edge of one of the bruises with his thumb.
“What’s her name?” Mikey asked Catey, seeing Raph’s obvious anger and trying to switch the subject. She looked up at him and he suddenly felt like he had seen her before. I have seen her before…I know I have, he thought, she’s that girl from last week. The one at the Plaza!! That means-.
“Her name is Andrea. We all call her Drea though,” Catey said, interrupting his thoughts.
Raph’s hand stilled on the woman’s neck when he heard the name. He turned his gaze from her neck to her face just as her eyelids fluttered open, revealing stormy blue eyes. “It’s you,” he murmured, hardly aware that he was even speaking.
A smile curved her full lips as she stared up at him. “It’s you,” she whispered back. “Mmm…oh, my throat hurts.”
“Yeah…they kinda do that after gettin’ strangled.” Offering her his hand, he helped her sit up. “You okay?”
“Fine. Thank you. Is Kitty…oh my God…Catey!” Whipping around, Andrea found her friend sitting beside her, smiling widely. “Catey!” she cried, throwing her arms around the younger woman. “Thank God you’re okay!”
“I’m fine Drea,” she said, laughing. “These guys got here before anything happened.”
Pulling away from Catey, the older blond looked around her at the faces of three mutant turtles. It was on the tip of her tongue to thank each one of them personally, especially Raph, but she wasn’t supposed to know their names. So she smiled, played clueless and said, “I can’t thank you guys enough…and even if I could I wouldn’t know who I was thanking.”
“Michelangelo,” the one in orange said, “but everyone I know just calls me Mikey.”
“Andrea. Nice to meet you.”
The one who had hung back, staying characteristically silent, moved forward, staring warily at the two women. “My name’s Leonardo and if you don’t mind my asking…why aren’t you two scared at all…and how is it that you know Raphael?”
Andrea cursed herself at least a million times right then and there but she managed to keep her expression oblivious. “I’m sorry…who?” she asked.
Leonardo pointed to his brother who was still kneeling next to Andrea. “Raphael, my brother. When you woke up you said “it’s you.” How do you know him? And Raph…how the hell do you know her?”
“We dated in high school,” Andrea replied deadpan, sending Catey into a fit of laughter.
“Leo, dude…don’t you remember? Drea’s the chick I caught Raph watchin’ last week at the Plaza,” Mikey all too eagerly provided.
“Yeah and Catey’s the one Mikey was droolin’ over,” Raph bit out, sounding extremely pissed and making sure he wouldn’t be the only one going down. Unfortunately for him, Mike was skilled at charming his way out of trouble.
“You call it drooling…I call it appreciating true beauty,” he said, winking at Catey. She ducked her head, trying to hide the bright red staining her cheeks.
“Alright guys, knock it off,” Leo said, sounding much less irritated. “That still doesn’t explain how you know Raph.”
Without hesitation Andrea smiled. “I don’t.”
“You don’t?”
“No. I was disorientated. I guess I just repeated what he said.”
“Oh…okay then…so why aren’t you scared?”
“Or whacking us over the head with purses,” Mikey added.
Andrea and Catey exchanged amused glances. “Well, I don’t exactly see anything frightening about you guys,” Andrea said, “You saved our lives. If anything we should be grateful, not scared. Besides…I’ve seen scary…and you guys aren’t scary.”
“What is then?” Raph asked her skeptically.
She turned to face him, giving him a playful smirk. “My sister during a certain time of the month. Now that…is terrifying.”
Chuckling, Raph shook his head. “I think I’ll trust ya on that one. C’mon. I’ll help ya up.”
She allowed him to help her and once on her own feet, a wave of dizziness hit. “Oh shit,” she murmured, swaying slightly. Of course, current company considered, she had nothing to worry about. The second she started to pitch forward Raph was there to catch her, wrapping a strong arm around her waist to steady her.
“I got ya,” he said softly, his breath warm on her neck.
Suppressing a shiver of delight, Andrea looked up at him, meeting his intense gaze. Awareness of everything besides his presence, slipped away as a warm smile curved her lips. Good lord this is way better than it ever was in my dreams, she thought, murmuring her thanks.
Behind them, Catey and Mikey shared an amused look. “Oh! I feel faint!” Catey gasped, swooning dramatically.
Mikey, being the clown that he was, caught on quickly to what she was doing. “No worries fair dudette!” he cried, “I’ll catch you!” and he did, easily picking her small body up and cradling it in his arms.
Their comical act caused Leo to release a short laugh and Andrea to blush but she made no effort to move away from Raph, choosing instead to take the attention off of them. “Catey hun, where’s the pizza?” she asked, turning only her head in the younger woman’s direction.
Still dangling lifelessly in Mikey’s arms, Catey lifted her head and frowned. “Huh?”
“The pizza. What happened to it?”
“Oh…um.” She wiggled a little and Mikey put her down. “They kind of got stepped on.”
Seeing the crestfallen expression of both girls, Mikey immediately sought to fix the problem. “You guys can have ours,” he said, without thinking, “that is if you like supreme.”
I know Kris does, Andrea thought, a plan quickly formulating in her mind. Finally she moved away from Raph, feeling a sharp sting of disappointment as his arm slid away from her waist. “Thanks for the offer Mikey…but I think I have a better idea. Why don’t we get one more and you guys come to our place?”
