Charlie paced back and forth in her apartment, checking her watch every two minutes. She hadn’t been on a date in a long time and even though she knew Michelangelo so well, she was still nervous. What would they talk about? Where would they go? She stroked her gold wedding band and looked up at the picture of Donnie. He smiled down at her from his place above the mantle piece and she found herself smiling back. He’d been her whole world... the light in her heart. What would he think about her agreeing to go on a date with his brother?
A noise in her bathroom startled her and she turned in time to see Michelangelo open the door and step through into the lit hallway. He looked older since Donatello had died - it had been really hard on them all. She noticed the little wrinkled around her eyes when she put on her makeup in the mornings, but she wasn’t getting gray hair yet - thank goodness.
Charlie smiled shyly as Mike held out a bouquet of yellow and white roses. Donatello had always brought her wildflowers...
“They’re beautiful, Mike,” she said, lifting them to her nose to smell. It was like holding sunshine and happiness in her hands.
“You’re beautiful,” he said, nodding to the casual summer dress she’d decided to wear after trying on thirteen outfits. It had light blue and white swirls all over it and she’d paired it with a pair of brown ballet flats, which she’d learned were easier to walk in the sewer with than heels.
Charlie smiled and went to the kitchen to put the flowers in water, glad she had an excuse to get another moment to herself so she could collect her thoughts. She reached up to the shelf above the stove and grabbed a clear vase before going to the sink to fill it. Mike had told her she looked hot before, but his voice had always had a teasing, light tone. When he said, “you’re beautiful,” his voice had been deep and serious. She really wasn’t sure about this date thing now... would he really be able to hide his feeling if this got too weird?
Then she felt him behind her and a green, scarred arm slowly reached passed her to turn off the tap. She blinked in surprise at the overflowing vase. Mike’s big hand covered hers as he took it from her and tipped a little water out. She could feel the heat of his body through his shell and his breath on the back of her neck.
Mike watched as the light skin on the back of Charlie’s neck turned light pink. She had her hair up, but some little curls had escaped and rested delicately against her skin. He wanted to sweep them away and kiss away the hot pinkness, but he’d promised he wouldn’t try anything like that. He breathed her scent in; he couldn’t smell his brother on her anymore.
He moved away and set the vase on the table before sticking the flowers in it. Charlie felt tingly all over and a little jittery. What had just happened there?
“You ready to go?” Mike asked, smiling like he couldn’t feel the twitching inside his shell. For a moment there, he’d thought of asking her if she still wanted to do this, but then the selfish part of him had kicked in - he’d never get another chance at this and he wasn’t going to let her back out.
“Yeah,” she said, still feeling the heat in her cheeks. “I’ll just get my jacket.” Charlie scuttled back in to the living room and got her denim jacket from the couch. She felt cold after he’d moved away from her.
Michelangelo was waiting for her at the bathroom window. He took her hand and helped her out onto the fire escape. “I’ll go down first, in case you fall,” he said, climbing over the side.
“But you’ll see up my dress!” Charlie laughed, putting her hands on her hips. No way was he getting that far on a first date.
“Duh,” thought Mike, grinning.. Outloud, he said, “I won’t look, I swear.”
Charlie took one look at his face and climbed back in the window. “I’ll take the stairs,” she called. She knew that the turtles checked her out now and then... or at least they used to. But a date was different - a girl had to act right if she wanted to be treated right. Charlie smiled to herself as she went out of the building’s front door and ducked into the alley. Maybe she wasn’t as out-of-practice as she’d thought.
Michelangelo pulled the heavy manhole cover back into place and dropped down to the floor below where Charlie was waiting. His flashlight snapped on and as they walked along together, the back of his hand brushed hers. He sucked up his fear and took her hand in his. Charlie raised an eyebrow at him and he just smiled and shrugged. He had one shot at this so he couldn’t afford to be afraid.
“We’re quiet tonight, huh?” Charlie said, her voice echoing around them.
“Yeah, I know,” Mike agreed, giving her hand a quick squeeze. “But that’s okay. We don’t need to talk for me to enjoy your company.” Charlie felt herself blushing again and she looked away, hoping the orange turtle hadn’t noticed. “Let me see you,” he said. “You’re so pretty when you do that.” Charlie’s stomach flip-flopped and she looked back to see Mike smiling at her. It was a bit strange to hear him say things like that, but she found herself liking the attention.
“So, uh, where are we going?” Charlie asked, as she forced her free hand to stop fidgeting with her dress.
“On a picnic,” Mike said, not taking his eyes off her for a second. Suddenly, he grabbed her up high in his arms and she gasped in surprise. The she heard the sloshing noise below as Mike carried her through a wet tunnel. “This place floods sometimes when it rains a lot,” Michelangelo explained. “There’s an old storm drain that channels a lot of water in here, but it’s the fastest way to get there.”
“Get where?” Charlie asked. His chest was rock-hard, but he was so warm...
“Now that I can’t tell you, babe,” Michelangelo laughed. “It’s a secret.”
“Aw, c’mon,” she whined, prodding him with her elbow. “Tell me?” She didn’t notice that he didn’t put her down when the sloshing noise ended.
“It’s somewhere you’ll like,” he hinted, as he turned into another tunnel.
“Is it the museum?” she teased, knowing full well that the turtles were too freaked out to go in there after their battle with Shredder’s mutant army.
Mike raised an eyebrow and snorted. “No,” he said. He stopped at a ladder and set her down gently before going up to lift the cover.
She watched the muscles flex in his thighs as he climbed. He certainly kept himself in good shape. Actually, Leonardo had confided in her once that after Mike had broken up with his girlfriend, Paula, he’d been spending all his free time working out. It had worried Leo a little, but Charlie knew that Mike was okay. That had been a weird relationship - Michelangelo must have liked Paula, otherwise they wouldn’t have dated, but he’d never really tried to get close to her, which Charlie always thought was weird.
“Mikey?” she said, as the cover scraped away. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course you can, dudette,” he laughed, climbing out into the moonlight. He could hear her voice getting clearer and less echo-y as she climbed the ladder below him. “Actually, I’m surprised you have to ask me anything. I think you already know it all.”
Charlie smiled to herself and shook her head. Mike knew a lot about her, too. Perhaps too much, sometimes. “Why’d you and Paula break up?” she asked. “You never told me that.” Her head popped out of the hole and she looked around. They were surrounded by bushes. Mike squatted down so his face was level with hers. His eyes were dark and serious - they sent shivers down her spine.
“Because she wasn’t you,” he said, hooking his hands under her arms and lifting her easily out. She slid down his body and shivered as her feet touched the ground. Mike let his eyes roam over her face. She had that shiny lip gloss on and the desire to kiss her ripped through his body. He turned away and reached under a bush to pull out the picnic basket and blanket he’d hidden there earlier. “I only went out with her because I didn’t want to be a nerdy virgin like Raphael,” he said, winking as he reached for her hand again. Charlie laughed - Raphael was hardly a virgin.
“So you never liked her?” Charlie asked.
“I did,” Mike said, leading her out of the bushes. “But not enough and not in the right way.”
“How come?” Charlie asked. “Oh Mikey! The zoo! I love the zoo!”
