Leonardo waited until the subway train started moving before he jumped down onto the roof of the third car. He crawled along until he came to the gap between the third and forth car, then dropped down so he could ride out of the wind. It wasn’t a bad way to travel, if you didn’t mind jumping off a moving train.
He wasn’t really sure what he was going to do once he got to Lisa’s. He hadn’t told the guys where he was going and she didn’t know that he was coming. He just didn’t feel like he should leave her alone tonight after she’d made those borderline-suicidal comments.
Lisa moved carefully in the bathtub, trying not to make too much noise as she scrubbed herself all over. She’d been doing this morning and night for the last month, trying to get the feeling of Bubba’s cold hands off her body. She grabbed her loofah and scrubbed her skin until it was pink, but still his scaly hands were on her thighs, between her legs, and grabbing her breasts. She could still smell the stink of his breath against her cheek and his drool on her back.
When the water got too cold, she climbed out of the bathtub, dried herself quickly, and pulled on her clothes and shoes before moving around the little house, checking the windows and doors to see that they were locked. The house was about thirty years old and had been built as part of a low-income housing project. The neighbourhood wasn’t as bad as it originally was, but most people still kept the decorative iron bars over their windows for protection. Lisa peeked carefully out at the street from her prison, glad of the extra security.
She took her place on her couch with an afghan her aunt had made over her knees. She didn’t sleep anymore, just dozed all night, ready to run if she had to.
The neighbour’s dog barked at Leonardo as he dashed through the shadows. Leo didn’t get why more people didn’t have dogs. They could almost always smell intruders. “Good boy!” he whispered, stopping and holding his hand out for the dog to sniff. Leo patted his new friend on the head; the dog would never bark at him again.
Leo thought that it was really strange that no lights were on at the address Charlie had given him. It looked like an empty house. Then he saw the curtains shift slightly as Lisa peeked out, checking up and down the street. Leo sighed heavily - she really was in bad shape, keeping all her lights off on purpose as if that would keep people from noticing that she existed. The empty-looking house was probably going to draw more undesirables than one with lights on. There’d be junkies trying to crash in there, looking for a place to shoot up if she wasn’t careful. At least the darkness made it easier for him to knock on the front door so he wouldn’t scare the hell out of her.
Lisa bolted upright and grabbed her baseball bat in white knuckles when she heard the gentle knock on the door. Maybe if she didn’t move, they’d go away. She reached for her phone, ready to dial 9-1-1 if they tried to come in.
“Lisa?” a man’s voice called. “It’s me, Leo. I came to check on you.” Lisa tip-toed over to the door and peeked through the little spy hole. A man in a fedora and trench coat stood there, looking up at her with a concerned, green face.
Leo heard the chain slide before she unlocked her door. He snorted - those chains were useless. If he wanted in, he could kick the door in, no problem. The door opened into a dark entryway and as soon as he stepped in, she slammed it behind him and re-locked it.
“This is ridiculous,” Leo thought, feeling along the wall for the switch. He snapped the outside light on and the one above them.
Lisa jumped when the lights came on. “What are you doing here?” she gasped, reaching to turn them off. Leonardo left his hand firmly over the switch, refusing to let her touch it.
“I came to see how you’re feeling,” he said. “Let’s leave these on so that people won’t think the house is empty, okay?” He smiled, kindly, and she let her hand drop. Her hair was still wet, but she was in her clothes - different ones from this afternoon, too. “Were you planning on going out?” he asked, nodding to her jeans and sneakers.
“Uh... no,” she said, blushing hard. “I just... it’s just easier to um... be dressed all the time... in case I had to... go out.” Lisa looked up at him, wincing, knowing that she was pretty pathetic.
Leonardo sighed and pulled his hat off, letting the ends of his blue mask fall over his shoulder. He noticed a set of pegs on the wall behind her and hung it there with his coat. She was even worse than he’d thought.
Lisa shivered as she watched Leonardo take off his coat. His katanas shone brightly from their place on his back. They’d sliced through Bubba’s neck like he was made of cheese. She shut her eyes tight against the image of Bubba’s head smacking down onto the floor.
Leonardo turned and walked into her livingroom, not caring how rude it was to proceed, uninvited; he had a point to make. He found a lamp next to the couch and turned it on. The place was very clean and cutesy - the couch and chair were old, but they were covered in matching afghans and little blue cushions. There was a big bookshelf in the corner, showing that she was a reader, and a couple of throw rugs on the floor. An acoustic guitar rested on a stand in the corner and her television was dusty, telling him that she didn’t watch it much. That didn’t really surprise him - she spent almost as much time at the bookstore as Charlie did.
Lisa followed Leonardo through to her bedroom, which had a pretty pink bedspread and creamy blue wallpaper, with little lacey curtains around the closed blinds. Her bathroom was still foggy from her bath, and the pink bathmat was damp under his feet. Lisa was quite the girly-girl. Leo smiled to himself; he liked women to be feminine. Not subservient; just feminine.
“Um... see anything you like?” Lisa asked, leaning against the doorjamb. She fiddled with her hands nervously as Leo turned and smiled at her, slightly embarrassed at being so rude as to show himself around.
“I like it all,” he said. “You have a lovely home. I just don’t understand why you’d leave all the lights off so you can’t see it and enjoy it.” She smiled a little, surprised at the compliment and led him into the tiny kitchen at the back of the house.
“It’s just a small place, but I never liked living in apartment buildings,” she said, gesturing him to a chair, while she went to the cupboard. “Do you um... like hot chocolate?”
“I love it,” Leonardo smiled.
“You’re right,” Lisa said shyly as she opened the fridge to get some milk to boil. “I shouldn’t have left the lights off like that. I just...” her voice trailed off as she put the pot on the burner.
“You just want to disappear,” Leo finished. “I understand.” He looked around at the butterfly curtains and flowery table cloth, feeling a little out of place. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” she said, opening a drawer to get a spoon to stir the milk so it wouldn’t burn on the bottom.
“When was the last time you actually wore pajamas and slept in your bed?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I dunno... a while, I guess. I get scared.” Lisa hung her head in shame as she stirred the milk. She was glad that he’d come - it was a lot better than being alone. He looked huge in the small chair, though, and his arms bulged as he folded them over his chest.
Leo sat still for a minute, watching her. “Can I ask you something else?” he asked.
“Okay,” she giggled. Leonardo was so polite!
“Do you trust me? I mean, you must trust me a little, since you let me in.”
Lisa poured the hot milk into two blue mugs and mixed in the chocolate power while she thought about it. “I don’t think you’re going to hurt me,” she said carefully, not sure what his point was. She set a mug down in front of him and he frowned as her sleeve rode up and he saw how pink her arms were. She’d been scrubbing herself. Hard.
“Do you trust me enough to let me stay on your couch tonight, to guard you while you sleep in your bed... in some actual pajamas?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow to her.
