Though she wiped his mind and snuck away guiltily from having sex that night, Diana could not escape the sense of attachment to Kal-El that she felt. She was infatuated with him: whenever he was away, she had to see him; whenever she saw him, she had to be close to him; whenever she was close to him, she had to have him. Several times after that first time, she would meet with him under some innocent pretext like crime-fighting. And then she would use her magic lasso to make him hers. After several times of this secret affair, Wonder Woman asked Superman(under the power of the lasso, of course) to leave Lois and marry her. He was powerless to say otherwise.
It was as though she was fundamentally changed, down to the very makeup of her character. She’d never seriously considered such thoughts before, but she wanted to marry him. She genuinely wanted to be owned by him, in the most deviant and innocent ways.
But Diana’s life was not so charmed.
Two months after Wonder Woman had first been deflowered by Superman, he was alerted to a threat in low earth orbit. Apparently, a space station had been hit by a piece of debris from one of Superman’s previous battle. Feeling responsible, he opted to save the space station and its one dozen astronauts before it plummeted to earth. It was a simple mission, but he did not return from it.
And Wonder Woman was there when it had happened.
Unable to assist her object of affection, Wonder Woman agreed to allow him to do this alone. Instead, she watched from the earth as the flaming speck in the sky tracked a path towards the planet. She had expected it to stop abruptly as Superman caught it and set it back on a stable orbit, but the dot continued to burn brightly as it crashed towards the earth. Confident of her lover’s skill, Diana was unworried and looked for some sign that Superman had flown the astronauts to safety away from the death-station. There was no such sign.
As the station got close enough for her to see, Diana began to panic. She flew up into the air and tried to arrest the station’s fall: impact alone could be catastrophic to the area.
But she was too late, she was barely able to slow the fall let alone turn it back into space. Both Wonder Woman and the station collided into the country side causing a massive explosion that rent the area for miles around, killing and injuring hundreds of people in the area. Diana arose from the wreckage, severely hurt but not crippled, and found Superman.
Dead.
A spike of kryptonite had been rammed through his chest by the impact of the crash. Chains of kryptonite still bound him, dead though he was.
It took her several hours to piece together what had happened. The space station was a trap, obviously. A lead frame had shielded the interior’s kryptonite trap, which must’ve ensnared Kal-El when he tried to rescue the astronauts inside. Whether they were pawns or villains, one could only guess, but the trap certainly worked. Superman fell with the station, helpless, and the impact itself sent hundreds of Kryptonite shards from the station’s frame whizzing through the air like bullets, piercing and impaling Superman several times. His body was mangled like a piece of meat.
Word soon spread of Superman’s demise. Villains, encouraged by the developments, began to arise in greater numbers, bold without Superman there to dissuade them. Bloodbath ensued, with superheroes and villains dying in the veritable war that had begun.
Most people despaired and questioned what could have brought about Superman’s sudden downfall. But Wonder Woman knew what it was. There was not enough Kryptonite on earth to make a space station, and Superman made it a point to follow the traffic of even the smallest pieces of Kryptonite. He watched their movements like countries watched the movement of weapons grade plutonium. There was only one explanation: the gods. They must have used their powers to arrange for Superman’s death, and there could only be one reason why:
Wonder Woman had forsaken her status as one of Athena’s maiden warriors. Athena, surely had jealously provoked the gods’ anger against Superman, thus sealing his doom. It could only be Diana’s fault; if she wouldn’t have cavorted with him, Superman would still be alive.
She dwelt on this for some time, but soon, Wonder Woman had to recognize that she was needed in the world without Superman even more than she was needed before.
Wonder Woman was patroling the Gotham City limits--a particularly violent place since Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and The Joker had tried to trap Batman, resulting in all four of their deaths and the collapsed of the western city limits into one giant rubble-filled crater. As she flew in wide arcs over the destroyed section of the city, she spotted Giganta throw a car at a police blockade.
Giganta had retooled her powers, somehow, so that she wouldn’t have to grow larger in order to achieve super-strength. She realized that being hundreds of feet tall was a liability as well as an ability, so she would often remain her normal six foot six inches but still possess strength beyond that of any mortal. This development in her powers had also occured after Superman’s death.
“Stop there Giganta!” Wonder Woman hollered as she flew down to ground level.
Giganta dropped the two policemen she was strangling and turned to face Diana. Having forsaken her cliched cavewoman fur bikini long ago, Giganta stood in a form-fitting full-body jumpsuit that was ultimately much more flattering to her figure than the bikini. Were a generic matte of fur had concealed much of her, the jumpsuit clung to her crevices, showing that she possessed a powerful and seductive form, built around a sturdy frame, full heaving breasts, and thick thighs that supported a well-rounded ass.
Wonder Woman, of course, did not take note of any of this as she landed on the cracked pavement about ten yards away. She quickly swung her lasso at Giganta, but the giantess deftly dodged the attack with a quick sidestep. Giganta was able to grab the errant lasso, yanking on it with such unexpected force that it pulled a startled and confused Wonder Woman to within her arms’ reach.
“Lasso not working like it used to, eh Wonder Woman?” Giganta mocked as she landed a solid uppercut under the Amazon’s jaw.
“Doesn’t matter, Giganta,” Wonder Woman grunted as she recovered from the blow with a graceful backflip. “You’re still going down!”
Wonder Woman brought her lasso back as she recovered her attack posture. The golden rope lashed Giganta’s ankles together and sent her toppling down to the debris-strewn pavement. A moment later, Wonder Woman was standing over her vanquished foe, assuming a haughty stance at Giganta’s feet.
“Still think you have a chance, Giganta?”
“Actually, yes, I do have a chance!” Giganta grunted as she flung her feet, though strung together with Wonder Woman’s magic lasso, to knock the Amazon’s leg out from under her, landing her roughly on the ground. Shaking the lasso loose from her ankles, Giganta leapt onto the fallen Wonder Woman before she had a moment to make sense of her lasso’s apparent loss of power.
“How?” Wonder Woman managed the surprised question as Giganta wrapped powerful arms and legs around her and exhibited the full extent of her current super-strength. “How did you defy the power of the magic lasso?”
“How did you beat me all those times over the years?” Giganta mocked as she brought her face nose-to-nose with her enemy. “With the help of the gods!”
With that, Giganta head-butted the greatest warrior of Themyscira and rolled over, so that Giganta was now underneath Wonder Woman. Diana struggled to break free from Giganta’s grasp, but it seemed that her own strength had diminished-- she did not have nearly enough strength to overthrow her captor. Instead, Giganta unbent Wonder Woman’s arms, desperately holding them straight back and up into the air.
“Get her tied now!” Giganta grunted as she plied the full extent of her strength to keep Diana subdued.
Wonder Woman grunted and kicked as she felt rope bind her wrists. After a moment, she felt her strength sapped by the magic of her own lasso as it was tied off by some unseen villain.
“By Aphrodite, you’d better let me go,” Diana vainly threatened over her shoulder at the unseen accomplice. “I’ll get out and make you both sorry for this...”
“Stop invoking the gods, you cliched hussy from another realm,” the newcomer--a woman of hard, gravelly voice and hot breath--spoke back over her shoulder. “And don’t mention Aphrodite, the irony would just kill me.”
Giganta laughed at her accomplice’s comment as she rolled Wonder Woman over onto the ground and stood up. Now on her back, Wonder Woman recognized the second woman as the villain Roulette. She wore a red, long, Asian-style dress with a diamond-shaped keyhole over her sternum and high heels. The slit that ran up the side of her dress exposed her slender calf muscles as she stood in a wide-stanced position of confidence. Giganta stood beside her, towering over Roulette, and crossed her arms. Roulette leaned against her cohort, her arm on the powerful woman’s shoulders in a pose of affection.
“What are you talking about?” Wonder Woman asked, fruitlessly wriggling against her unbreakable bonds.
“The gods are not on your side in this, Princess Diana of Themyscira,” Roulette gloated simply. “In fact, they have abandoned you. You’ve thumbed your nose at them one too many times, and now you, oh-most-wanted-of-all-Amazons, are on your own.”
“I don’t understand,” Wonder Woman complained. “What have I done to anger the gods?”
“You’re the one under the magic lasso’s spell, Diana,” Roulette sneered as she hiked up her dress and kneeled over Wonder Woman, stradling her star-spangled pelvis. “You tell me.”
“I don’t kn--” Diana’s words caught, however, as the truth-telling lasso’s magic forced her to admit the many ways she had defied her benefactors. “I changed the traditional Greek armor of my people to reflect my love for America, dishonoring the Greek gods. I became a member of the Justice League, submitting myself to a team of heroes who did not honor the gods. I fought against more supernatural Greek heroes and villains than I helped. I--”
“Say it,” Roulette said sternly as Diana stuttered over the next admission.
“I had sex with a mortal man and married him,” Diana sobbed. “I broke my vows to Athena and Aphrodite by bonding myself with a man.”
Roulette’s jaw dropped. She had no idea that was why Wonder Woman had fallen out of favor with her former patrons. All she knew was that Wonder Woman was vulnerable, and Roulette jumped at the opportunity to team up with Giganta in order to mess with Wonder Woman.
As Roulette stared at Wonder Woman’s prone, helpless form, however, her jaw tightened as she gritted her teeth in grim satisfaction. She poked Wonder Woman’s thigh with her toe through her open-toed shoes.
“Giganta,” Roulette croaked abruptly, licking her lips as she cleared her throat. “Strip her.”
