Chapter 2: Pain.
Author’s warning: The events in “Spellbound” will be spoiled if you read this chapter before watching it! As this is one of my particularly favourite episodes (for undisclosed reasons) I’d like for my readers to have watched the episode at least once before reading this chapter, however long ago that may have been. That said, a thorough recollection of this episode is not required to understand my chapter, due to how much background information I provide.
“Beast-Boy?” He stopped dead-still and slowly turned to face the speaker. “What were you doing in Raven’s room?”
Inside Beast-Boy’s head was total panic: He couldn’t think! “Um… Err… I can’t tell you… Err… It’s a secret.” He blurted.
Cyborg raised the eyebrow above his human eye. “A secret huh?”
Beast-Boy’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment and he scratched the back of his head with his right hand in that faux-nonchalant gesture that was one of his more-subtle trademarks. Inside, his brain was working overtime…
“Yeah… Well, Raven made me promise not to tell…” Beast-Boy noticed Robin had also been looking his direction from afar, and was now slowly approaching with a dangerously curious smirk hidden in his features. Robin stopped when he drew level with Cyborg.
Beast-Boy was getting alarmingly worried now, not only that the truth would be forced out of him, but also of how Raven would choose to punish him afterward… He shuddered at the latter thought.
“Well…” he squeaked, voice breaking with the panic. He tried to calm himself down a bit, did a deliberate shifty-look back at Raven’s door, then continued in a hushed whisper with a hand to the side of his mouth facing Raven’s room: “Look. She just showed me something private to thank me for saving her from Adonis, ok?” He mentally slapped himself – That still sounded far too dodgy! “I was outside throwing rocks in the water and worrying about that beast that lurks within me, when Raven showed up. We discussed the matter seriously – which wasn’t an easy experience for me, you know? – Anyway, she invited me into one of her secrets similar to mine to make me feel better. You know, ‘Misery loves company’ and all that. Now can I please get some sleep? It’s getting late.” He finished crossly, adding “And don’t tell Raven I said anything, will you.” He asked rhetorically. “I’ve already said more than I intended, and I dread to think what she might do to me if she thought I’d said too much about this to anyone.” He let some of his fear of Raven’s typical revenges show in his face, before turning and walking into his room.
He walked calmly, opened and closed his door calmly, then calmly collapsed in a relieved heap on his messy bedroom floor.
“Oh man, that was close…” He whimpered silently to himself, remembering the last time he’d upset Raven and shuddering. He glanced back at his door, wondering what the others would make of his little speech. As he went over in his mind exactly what he had said to Cyborg and Robin, going through it with a fine-toothed comb, he congratulated himself on how smart he’d been to come up with all that without having to flat-out lie to anyone. – Lies are nightmares waiting to happen: There’s always the chance of them getting found-out, then everyone gets upset at you. Half-truths on the other hand, have the benefit that if they are found out, they’re more-easily forgiven. Especially in a case like this, where Raven’s sexual activities were concerned and therefore Beast-Boy’s safety from her wrath.
*
Beast-Boy had two distinct dreams that night: One was a nightmare encompassing an angry Raven; while the other reminisced over the time they spent together in her room…
*
The following morning, both Beast-Boy and Raven woke up in a good mood. They sat opposite each other for breakfast, but didn’t say more than “Good morning” to each other. Starfire sensed that there was something not quite normal about breakfast today…
A few minutes later it finally clicked and she knew what was bothering her. “Did something happen between friends Raven and Beast-Boy last-night?” she asked naïvely.
“NO!” snapped the both of them together. A split-second later, Beast-Boy had stuffed his mouth full of Tofu to prevent himself saying anything further. Raven understood his motives. She turned to face Starfire. “Why do you ask, Starfire?” She said this in a measured tone, not betraying even the slightest emotion.
Starfire was visibly shocked and confused by their outburst, while Robin and Cyborg chose not to react and pretended they hadn’t noticed anything. They had believed Beast-Boy’s version of last night’s events and didn’t want him to get into trouble with Raven. – Last time that had happened, it had meant expensive repair-bills.
“I just thought maybe you two had another fight… By this time on a normal day, friend Beast-Boy is making with the funnies, and friend Raven is usually complaining about someth…” Starfire quickly slapped her hand over her mouth to prevent herself completing that sentence. “Forgive me, friend Raven, I did not mean any offen…” she apologized frantically, stopping short as Raven’s response caught her by surprise.
Raven had smiled. Starfire wasn’t sure exactly how she had expected Raven to react, but a smile was most definitely not it.
Raven’s smile happened before she could prevent it. It was caused by the immense relief she felt when she realized their secret had not been revealed.
“Raven, why are you smiling?” Starfire asked curiously.
The smile vanished immediately. Raven chose to ignore the question. “There was no fight, Starfire, everything is fine. I don’t know why Beast-Boy is not injecting his usual attempt at humour today, but personally I find it an improvement. I can’t think of anything else to ‘complain about’ for now, as you put it, so if you’ll excuse me I have an urgent appointment with a good book.” With that, she warped away. Probably to her room.
Everyone looked at each other, then turned to Beast-Boy, who ‘meep’ed and devoured the rest of his breakfast as fast as he could, before dashing into the bathroom and locking the door. He stood with his back to the inside of the door, catching his breath and trying not to choke on a lump of Tofu that was trying to lodge in his throat. He transformed briefly into a pelican, so he could more-easily store his last huge mouthful of breakfast, returning to normal after he’d swallowed it.
Raven had heard the bathroom door slam, and rightly-guessed the occupant and his reasons. She decided what was needed was a distraction; to get everyone away from the subject before Beast-Boy was forced to blurt out something she’d have to punish him for.
She looked around her room frantically for anything that might help her think of something… Her eyes locked on a book. It was a big, white, ornate book, with a big ‘O’ on the cover and a blank spine. Raven had powerful mixed-feelings about this book, as not-so-long-ago an evil Dragon called Malchior had tricked her into breaking the curse that bound it to the book, thus setting it free.
Fortunately she’d been able to correct her error by re-sealing Malchior back into the book, and she hadn’t touched it since she’d returned it to her shelf due to that memory. Now she considered it, Malchior had taught her some pretty powerful magic, and there was that brave Wizard Rorek-of-Gnole who had been the hero of the stories within it…
She picked it up and cautiously flicked through it. The last time she’d been reading it, Malchior had switched the story around to make him the hero and Rorek the Dragon, but when she freed him, the story had automatically reverted to its original form. Now, it seemed, Malchior was either too weak from their fight, or just couldn’t be bothered to re-create the false stories now she knew the truth, so the stories remained in their original form as she scanned the pages.
If she hadn’t been in a hurry, she would have spent more time reading these stories… No, actually if she had more time, she probably wouldn’t have picked up this particular book, now she came to think about it. Nevertheless, she did manage to find out more about Rorek’s curse that held Malchior (Aldruon-Enlenthrenel-Vosolon-Nerissnorr), and Malchior’s counter-curse (Hezbereq-Edmoronay-Gostwenthen-Verbisnex, Indobriam-Bispendruay-Haransicortis-Rex): It seemed this particular counter-curse could be used for more than just freeing evil Dragons from books…
She shut the book and returned it to the shelf, thinking hard about this new information. At length, an image formed in her mind of an unfortunate friend from her past. She smiled as a possibility crossed her mind.
*
Outside the bathroom, Starfire knocked softly on the door. “Beast-Boy?” she called quietly through the gap under the door, “Cyborg showed me a hologram of what you told him last night… I will not pry further into this matter.”
Within, Beast-Boy breathed a sigh of relief, flushed and washed his hands to complete the illusion of a normal bathroom-break, then opened the door. “All yours!” he announced jovially, pretending he hadn’t heard what she’d said, and acting like she was just waiting to use the bathroom herself. He walked past her into the living room and started looking for a computer game to play.
Starfire walked into the bathroom and locked the door, then felt rather foolish for doing so with no reason. Beast-Boy had confused her into doing this, but she made the most of it anyway. When she emerged, she went off to tend Silky, their new pet.
Cyborg joined Beast-Boy, looking for a game to thrash him at, and Robin was nowhere to be seen. There was nothing unusual about that, and he was probably off somewhere developing some new techno-toys for his utility belt.
*
Suddenly the distress siren sounded through the tannoy, calling all Titans to the situation-room. Starfire, Beast-Boy and Cyborg assumed Robin was responsible for it, but Robin had no idea who had set it off. They all hurried into the room to find Raven waiting for them.
“Raven?!?” the four of them asked simultaneously, all surprised. Robin recovered first and stepped toward her, “Well this is a surprise. It’s unusual for you to call us to a meeting, Raven. What can we help you with?” he continued, trying to sound as nonchalant as usual.
Raven turned to face them. She had another of those rare smiles on her face, which somehow made the others feel a little uneasy.
“Actually, there’s nothing urgent for any of you to do…” she started, baiting her words.
Robin folded his arms and started to tap his foot, getting ready to vent at Raven for sounding a false-alarm.
Before he could say another word, or any of the others had chance to leave the room grumbling at her, Raven continued:
“I just figured you’d all want to know as soon as possible…” Again, she baited her words. When she’d drawn their confused attention once more, she tapped a few commands into the computer console. A second or so later, the screen displayed one of the diagnostic beds in the medical room. The occupant seemed unconscious, yet otherwise completely healthy. It was…
“TERRA!!!” Four voices yelled in surprised, excited, happy tones.
Raven beamed at them. “Terra.” She confirmed.
As they opened their mouths to deluge her with questions, Raven slammed a white book onto the briefing-table. It had a big “O” on the cover. That shut them up… she thought; smile fading to her usual expression.
“In case any of you haven’t worked it out yet,” She knew Robin might work it out, given enough time, but didn’t expect it from the others, “The counter-curse I was tricked into using on this book,” she gave it a menacing glare to show how much she despised the Dragon it bound, “Has other properties.” She paused. “Needless to say,” she pointed at the screen, “It also worked on our mutual friend here…”
She turned back to them with a sigh; “Regretfully, Terra has not regained consciousness since I restored her from that statuesque form… But I figured a coma was preferable to being a pigeon-perch for the rest of eternity…” she paused, “What?” They were all staring at her gormlessly, and then Beast-Boy ran up and caught her into an unexpectedly emotional hug. “Thankyou, Raven! – You’re the best!” he exclaimed, eyes watering with a grief he could now discard. Then he suddenly released her so she staggered a little, as he realized his new dilemma. – Now what was he going to do?
*
Raven had perceived the emotional conflict within Beast-Boy. This was a complication she hadn’t thoroughly thought-out beforehand, but on reflection she really couldn’t have lived with herself if she’d been selfish enough over Beast-Boy’s affections to leave Terra in her stone knowing she could do something about it.
The group were soon gathered at Terra’s bedside, and believing she might hear them despite her condition, they talked to her over the course of that day. At first they talked as a group, recounting missions and other things Terra was particularly missed over, then they started splitting off to just a few of them at a time, then eventually individual visits. Of course, Beast-Boy spent the most time with her. He’d realized a while ago that he was actually in-love with Terra.
Over the seemingly endless time she’d spent as stone, Beast-Boy had gone through phases of hope for her rescue, despair at not finding a means to free her, and finally the solemn grief of loss when he’d decided to move-on with his life and could no-longer realistically bind himself to the task of freeing her.
Now, all that time he could have continued his search instead of grieving turned itself against him and smote his mind mercilessly. Particularly when he reflected on his recent ‘encounter’ with Raven, which he realized would probably not have occurred if he’d still held hope for Terra’s return.
Seemingly on cue, Raven entered the room. She could tell by the way Beast-Boy glanced at her, some of what he was thinking.
“When did you know you could free her?” He asked.
“About half an hour before I tried.” She answered calmly. A few seconds later he spoke again:
“So it was after…?” He started to ask, but his question was cut off by Ravens’ answer as if she’d been expecting this question for some time.
“Yes, it was ‘after’. Many hours ‘after’. But I don’t regret what happened. We weren’t to know there was a way to rescue Terra after all this time, and reflecting on ‘what-if’ situations after the fact does no-one any good.” A sad, knowing look took over Raven’s face as she approached and put her left arm around Beast-Boy’s shoulders. “You’re in-love with her, aren’t you.” She asked rhetorically, knowing the answer.
“Yes, I think I am…” Beast-Boy sobbed, feeling his own emotional pain lessen slightly as Raven’s comforting words washed over him.

Starfire woke up early one morning, mere days after Terra’s return, with an odd, warm, tingly feeling ‘down below’.
At first, she dismissed it; assuming she’d just had another of those dreams about ‘being with’ Robin… But an hour or so later, when it still hadn’t dissipated, she knew something was up.
A memory visited her mind of her older-sister Blackfire mentioning a symptom like this, just before she… Oh no!!
Starfire tried to contain her panic by forcefully controlling her breathing pattern. She had to think! – How should she deal with this? Run away, like last time? No, that had been a very bad idea in hindsight… Robin. She thought, What had he said last time? Her memory cleared, but her sense of dread was not appeased. Robin had told her not to keep that big a secret from her friends again, and that if they’d known what was going on, they would have supported her 100%… But this? She bounced on the balls of her feet while she made up her mind what she should do, and eventually convinced herself to do it.
There was a knock on Robin’s bedroom door. It was a very soft knock, but it was not long after 10am, so he was awake enough to notice it.
Robin draped a robe round his shoulders to hide his nightclothes a bit, and then answered the door. It was Starfire, so he instinctively drew his robe tighter about him.
“Good morning, Star. Is there something I can help you with?” he asked automatically. Then he noticed her expression and quickly ushered her inside, closing the door behind her so they’d have some privacy from prying ears.
“Starfire?” he prompted again, this time more sincerely. He sat down on the edge of his bed and waited patiently for her to enlighten him.
Starfire tried to talk a few times, eventually closing her eyes to force the words out of her mouth before she could chicken-out.
“Um… Remember that time I grew horns from my neck and long stripy fingernails and eventually turned into a chrysalis? Well, um, something like that is happening again… Only different…” She looked at him hopefully, with big round anxious eyes.
Robin sighed in recollection, running a hand through his unkempt hair as his keen analytical mind determined the best way to react.
“Okay, thankyou for confiding in me instead of running away again. Now, what do I need to know?” he asked carefully, paying attention to her next words.
“It is… Difficult for me to discuss such things… Especially with a… a male…” she started, hoping he’d pick up on the clue.
“Would it be easier with Raven?” Robin half-asked, half-suggested.
“No, I don’t feel as close with her as I do with you…” she blushed and looked away from him, realizing what she’d implied.
Robin also blushed at Starfire’s remark, but hid it almost immediately.
“Then I guess you better continue. Take your time, there’s no rush here.” He got comfortable on his bed and motioned Starfire to a convenient chair.
As Starfire explained to him what she thought was going on, Robin’s eyes got wider and wider. He had to concentrate very hard a few times to stop himself getting noticeable boners. He was beginning to realize how tricky it was likely to prove, managing Starfire’s condition, however temporary it might be.
“Wow. Blackfire did that?” He shuddered, “I can’t imagine you doing something like that, no matter what the consequences were…” He sighed sadly before continuing. “You realize how difficult it would be if we tried to handle this just between the two of us, right? I really think the other Titans need to be told about this… Do you want me to explain it to them?”
Starfire ‘meep’ed at this suggestion, horrified at the impending embarrassment, yet knowing Robin’s plan was for the best.
During lunch, which today was a group activity rather than individuals grabbing their own at their convenience, Starfire was fidgety, quiet, and highly nervous for two very good reasons: First, because of the changes happening to her body; Second, because she knew what was going to happen as soon as everyone had finished eating. Needless to say, due to their close friendship with her, they all noticed. One by one, each glanced at her, trying not to be noticed. They also glanced at Robin, whom they came to realize knew something they didn’t.
Robin hadn’t needed to organize anything, much less a full meeting. He had both expected and counted-on everyone’s curiosity after noticing everything wasn’t quite right, and knew that wouldn’t take long even for Beast-Boy once they were sharing a meal.
As each Titan finished eating, they placed their cutlery on their empty plates and waited, glancing silently at their companions and starting to get worried.
Finally the last cutlery clattered to its plate, and Raven packed everything into their dishwasher with her magic so no-one had to leave the dining area.
Robin cleared his throat: “I see everyone noticed.” He smirked slightly, getting everyone’s attention before putting his serious-face back on.
“An unusual ‘Situation’ has occurred that needs our attention. My advice was sought on a sensitive matter and, after hearing all available details, I suggested we deal with this as a group… I volunteered to brief you so Starfire wouldn’t have to.”
At this, Starfire ‘meep’ed and wished she was invisible. Robin gave her a knowing, comforting glance before continuing. He took a deep steadying breath.
“Everyone remembers when Starfire grew horns on her neck etc, right? – Good. That will save some time.” He got up from the table and paced round to where Starfire sat so he could offer physical support. – She hid behind him for the remainder of his explanation, revealing part of her face every once in a while to confirm what Robin said was true.
“Something is happening to our friend Starfire, that happens to most Tamaranian females toward the end of puberty. It is as common on Tamaran as the transformation thing she’s already been through, yet it manifests in a very different way. In crude earth-terms, this could be considered the Tamaranian equivalent to being ‘in-heat’. That is, our poor friend’s sex-drive is going temporarily insane.” As Robin’s cheeks flushed on behalf of Starfire’s embarrassment, a whimpering sob came from behind him where she was hiding. Starfire couldn’t think of any other time before now when she’d been this embarrassed. Robin shot a glare at Beast-Boy, as if daring him to make a joke. He took the hint. As did Cyborg. Raven’s emotions were as inscrutable as ever.
“Now for the difficult part – what we need to do to help Starfire through this trying time. This will likely test the boundaries of Starfire’s friendship to everyone in this room: Not only do we have to prevent Starfire’s secret from going further than these walls and prevent her making sexual advances toward allies, enemies, and strangers, but – and this is the hardest part – we have to somehow find ways to help relieve Star’s sexual energies without taking advantage of her in this condition. This is very important, as complete abstinence leads to insanity and probable death; neither of which would be temporary. Also, as Princess of Tamaran, Starfire’s virginity must be protected at all costs, meaning absolutely NO vaginal intercourse for the duration of this condition. If that were to happen, she would be exiled from Tamaran and stripped of her royal title, which would then fall back to Blackfire.” Robin stopped talking and let this consequence sink in.
Starfire could no-longer stand this level of embarrassment. The mention of her virginity had finally tipped the scale, and she fled to her room. She locked the door behind her then sat on her bed, knees drawn up with her arms around them, rocking back and forth as she cried with the sheer weight of her condition and the embarrassment of sharing such information with her fellow Titans.
There was a deafening silence around the dining table when Robin stopped talking. The bottom-jaws of both Beast-Boy and Cyborg had dropped open so low they almost hit the tabletop. Robin looked severely uncomfortable, especially when Starfire fled. Raven alone seemed to remain composed. At the sound of Starfire’s bedroom door slamming, Raven was stirred to speech.
“So…” she started slowly, “Starfire is… ‘In heat’,” she gulped, “And we have to…” she couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence.
“Starfire wants us to please her… Sexually?!?” Beast-Boy blurted squeakily.
Robin gave him an evil look, flames seeming to shoot out his nostrils as he snorted.
“NO! – Well, yes… that’s what we have to do… But she NEEDS this from us! It’s not a question of ‘wanting’!” he snapped in frustration.
Drool started stretching down from Cyborg’s mouth, and the mind behind his human eye seemed elsewhere. Robin glanced from him to Raven. She understood and smacked Cyborg out of his trance with her magic formed into the shape of a large open hand.
Author’s notes:
Surprise! – No sex in this chapter! *Evil-Laugh*
That’s just one more ‘painful’ thing for my Pain chapter, just for you guys’n’gals reading this.
The main ‘pain’ theme for this chapter is the emotional kind, rather than physical pain, which might have disappointed those of you who expected it.
I welcome all reviews – the more the merrier! Were you disappointed with this chapter? Or did you revel in the emotional torture I put our beloved heroes through?
There are several lead-ins’ to whet your appetites for the chapter(s) to come.
I leave you with one more ‘pain’: Waiting for Chapter 3. In the meantime, here’s a recap:
Terra has been rescued, which leaves Beast-Boy in a bit of a pickle after what he and Raven got up to in Chapter 1.
Terra is still unconscious.
Starfire has a ‘condition’ to deal with.
Robin has some imminent jealousy issues to deal with concerning what Starfire will be getting up to with their best-friends.
Beast-Boy now has a third girl to worry sexually about.
Cyborg might finally get some ‘action’, which I haven’t seen much of in other fanfics.
Cyborg has to be careful not to upset Robin though. Or Starfire, more importantly.
Raven may have to come out of the closet about her sexual past a bit, to help Starfire.
Raven has to come to terms with Beast-Boy and Terra’s relationship.
A/N Continued: As per previous, this chapter also randomly disappeared, so here I go re-uploading it in full for my readers to enjoy.
Although this fic is quite old now, I do have another chapter in progress but on hiatus. Unfortunately it's nowhere near ready to read, more a loose collection of plot notes really. I will try to get something churned out, but it could take some time to complete, so I do hope you'll understand.
