Acquiring a Taste
Later that night, the titans were sitting around the tower, relaxing. Robin was working with Starfire, getting her acclimated to slang terms so she wouldn’t be confused all the time. Raven was meditating again, and Cyborg and Beast Boy were playing video games. “You can’t pass me, you know you can’t,” Cyborg taunted. Beast Boy ignored him, and through a series of maneuvers, was able to pass him. “Go to left, quick right, nitro, and...I win,” Beast Boy exclaimed. “What,” Cyborg shouted, “Rematch.” Beast Boy smirked. “Lets go,” he said.
As Beast Boy and Cyborg began their next round, Raven walked in. “Hey Rave, what’s up,” Beast Boy asked. “Getting some herbal tea,” she replied drearily as she walked to the kitchen. “Gee Raven, warm up to us sometime,” Beast Boy muttered. “Can we get back to the game,” Cyborked.ked. Beast Boy responded by starting the game. “Bring it on Cy.” The titans resumed their virtual race. Then Robin and Starfire walked in on Cyborg and Beast Boy. “You guys still at it,” Robin asked. The two didn’twer, wer, focused on beating the other. Again, Beast Boy won. “Lucky day,” Cyborg complained. Beast Boy smirkeI’m I’m better than you; admit it,” he teased.
Just as Cyborg was going to challenge his friend to another game, the titan’s alarm went off. Getting away from whatever they were doing, the titans met to see what the trouble was. “Looks like there is something going on downtown,” Cyborg said looking at the map of the city. “What is the trouble in this subterranean dwelling,” Starfire asked. “Starfire,” Robin said leanoverover to her, “remember what that means?” “Oh yes, I remember now,” Starfire said smiling, slightly embarrassed. “Any idea who it is,” Robin asked. “Let me give you a hint,” Cyborg said pressing keys on the computer, zooming in on the exact building. “There he is,” he said seeing a shadowy figure entering a research and development lab for zinothium. “Red X,” Robin muttered.
The titans looked at Robin. “I thought that you took the belt from him,” Beast Boy said. “I did,” Robin said, “he can’t use the weapon system or teleporting without it. Plus, he doesn’t have any zinothim to power it if he did.” “So why is he trying to steal it,” Cyborg asked. “Lets get there and find out,” Raven said as she enveloped her friends in black magic and teleported them to the scene of the crime.
Instantly, the teen titan’s stood outside of where Red X had broken in. What they saw outside was horrific. Several guards were bleeding from knife wounds, another had a blade in his back, and two others were dead. “Looks like he’s hardcore,” Cyborg said looking at the carnage. “This time, he won’t get away,” Robin said, “Titans go!” The team attacked carefully, expecting Red X to attack at any moment. Even without the suit’s powers, he had proven to be a formidable opponent, much like Robin. He had the same moves and strategy. “Keep your guard up,” Robin said as they entered the R&D lab. “How are we to fight an enemy that we are unable to see,” Starfire asked. t trt try to think of something that I would do. He fights a lot like me,” the boy wonder responded.
Into the scarcely lit hallway they walked, guided by light from Starfire’s charged starbolts, Cyborg’s flashlight, and the emergency lights. “Careful guys,” Robin whispered back to his friends, “if we’re going to get ambushed, it’s going to be in here.” “How do you know,” Cyborg asked. “Its where I would,” Robin replied, anticipating an attack. But they were so focused on what was ahead that they didn’t see their enemy sneaking up behind them until it was too late. In an instant, Red X knocked Beast Boy to the ground. The sound of a body hitting the ground alerted the other titans. “X,” Robin muttered and he charged at his opponent. But Red X, so much like Robin, was able to anticipate his every move. “Come on,” Red X mocked, “is that the best you can do?” Robin made a sudden change in his technique and was able catch his enemy off guard and knocked him down. Red X wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and rolled away as Raven threw a couple of crates at him. Cyborg deployed his sonic cannon and fired, but X was able to dodge the blasts. Starfire used a barrage of starbolts to defeat the intruder but only managed to back him up. Fortunately, that was all the titans needed to gain the upper hand. Backing up, Red X tripped over Beast Boy, still knocked down from X’s sneak attack. “Get his legs,” Robin shouted, “if he can’t run, he’s done for.” Raven obliged him by slamming a fire extinguisher on Red’s foot, making a severe compound fracture. “Oh dear God,” the titan’s enemy exclaimed in anguish, “my foot, my foot is broken.” Robin looked at Raven. “You only needed to bind his feet, not break ‘em,” the boy wonder said. “I only hit one and it’ll heal in time,” Raven replied.
Walking over to their fallen enemy, Robin grabbed Red X’s shirt and pulled him to look in in the eyes. “What are you up to this time,” the titan leader demanded. “Nothing now,” X replied. “Talk,” Robin shouted, “Who are you working for?” But the fallen villain wouldn’t answer. Growing infuriated, Robin dropped Red X back to the floor and kicked his enemy’s foot, elevating the pain. “Aaah,” Red X screamed, “I work alone. All great thieves work alone.” Getting up on one foot, Red X threw down a smoke screen, filling the hall and blinding the titans. But while the other titans were coughing, Beast Boy had managed to slowly moved behind Red X and wasn’t about to get taken down again.
“Going somewhere,” the green titan mockingly asked as his attacker tried to get away. “No please,” the injured villain begged as Beast Boy walked towards him. Something in Beast Boy’s eyes changed. Instead of looking to beat his enemy, he appeared to want to bite his head off, literally. “What are you doing,” Beast Boy’s reason said in the back of his mind. But the changeling wasn’t listening to reason, his animal instincts took control; he wanted to hurt Red X like X hurt him. Kicking X’s shin opposite his broken foot, the would-be thief fell to the ground again. Beast Boy roughly grabbed his enemy and, in a rage, bit him on the neck, his lower fangs digging into flesh. The wound was deep enough that Beast Boy got a taste. “What did I just do,” Beast Boy thought as huck uck out his tongue, spit and wiped his hands over it, trying to get the taste out of his mouth. But that gave Red X the time he needed to escape Beast Boy. Using another smoke grenade, Red X stumbled away into the shadows.
When the smoke finally cleared, the titans stood alone, wondering where their enemy had gone. “Something tells me that he won’t be back for a while,” Cyborg said. “I don’t think anyone would try to fight us when they have a broken, I mean shattered, foot,” Robin said. Starfire noticed blon Ben Beast Boy’s mouth and hands. “Beast Boy,” she exclaimed, worried that her friend was badly hurt, “what happened to your hands?” Beast Boy, looking puzzled, looked at his hands and saw red streaks of blood. “I uh,” Beast Boy stumbled, “X punched me in the mouth causing me to bust the inside of my lip. I just wiped the blood from my mouth.” “I hope they buy it,” Beast Boy thought, “They don’t need to know what happened.” The others, although skeptical, didn’t push the subject. “Guess we should get back to the tower so you can get cleaned up,” Robin said to the green titan. Staring at his hands, Beast Boy nodded, “I think that these gloves are trash though.” Raven used her powers to transport the titans back to the tower.
Back in Titans Tower, Beast Boy walked away to his room to get cleaned up. “What’s going on with BB,” Cyborg asked, “he seems like he’s having a problem with something. It’s not like him to keep a secret.” Starfire looked at Cybord sad said, “Perhaps this is a situation in which one must reach a conclusion without the assistance of another.” Robin and Raven nodded in agreement. “So what now,” Cyborg said. “I’m getting hungry,” Robin said. It was about 9:30 so it was about three and a half hours since dinner and fighting crime could work up an appetite. “Shall I make an evening meal,” Starfire asked. The other titans looked at each other. Starfire was so emotional and in need of feeling good about herself, that they agreed, even if the food looked like it was half alive. Starfire walked into the kitchen and Robin and Cyborg followed. Raven however went over to the couch where she began to read one of her books.
“Is something bothering you, man,” Cyborg asked Robin. The boy wonder was looking like he was deep in thought. “I’m wondering about what Beast Boy said back there,” he said. “Why,” Cyborg inquired. “Because he seemed so hesitant in saying anything,” Robin responded. In the back of his mind, he thought something terrible was happening to Beast Boy and he didn’t want to say anything. “Surely our friend is going to be alright,” Starfire said, looking over her shoulder as she was cutting some alien vegetables. “Starfire,” Robin exclaimed, but it was too late. Starfire brought down the knife and cut her finger. “Ouch,” Starfire exclaimed as she began to bleed. The commotion caused Raven and Beast Boy to rush to the scene. “What’s wrong,” Beast Boy shouted running to the kitchen. “Starfire just cut herself,” Robin said. Starfire showed Beast Boy where she had cut herself. At the sight of blood, Beast Boy felt his strange animal instinct rise like it had when he bit Red X’s neck. “Just like Raven said,” he thought. Beast Boy stared at Star’s wound as Raven approached. “Its just a little cut,” she said monotone. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine,” Rosaidsaid. Starfire smiled at Robin. “I’ll heal that” Raven said looking at the minute cut and passed her hand over it. Instantly, the flesh healed. Starfire said gave her gratitude and she went back to her chopping, careful as to not let it happen again.
While Robin and Cyborg sat down at the table and Raven went back to her reading, Beast Boy was worried. “Did I just get captivated seeing my friend bleed,” he asked himself. “Hey, you wanna sit down,” Robin said. The green titan, temporarily distracted from his thoughts, sat down. He looked at Starfire and asked himself again, “What was I feeling?” “Time to eat,” Starfire said joyously as she set down an assortment of strange alien dishes. “Hey Raven, you joining us,” Beast Boy shouted. “Yeah,” Raven said coming back to the group. When she sat down, Starfire exclaimed, “Dig in.” Cyborg looked at Robin, “Since when did she talk like that,” he asked. “Since I taught her the meaning of some slangs,” he said as he reach for what he hoped was a vegetable. “Please friends,” Starfire said, “eat.” She reached for some of everything and smiled. “Just like I remember it,” she said eating her first serving. Just to be polite, Cyborg had something like a green pudding and Beast Boy ate some alien veggies. Raven however, merely drank some Tameranian concoction that was an equivalent of her herbal tea. And Robin carefully chose his meal, making sure that whatever he took, he’d eat as to not offend Starfire.
When the meal was finished, Cyborg got up to clean the mountain of dishes. “Shall I assist you,” Starfire asked as she watched her friend begin his chores. “I’ll be fine,” Cyborg responded, “you just relax.” The other titans went to the main room where they were planning on watching a new movie that Beast Boy had his eyes on, “The Haunted”. “Hurry up, Cy,” the green titan exclaimed, “I wanna watch the movie.” “Just wait one more minute,” Cyborg shouted as he was finishing up. He walked in and Beast Boy started the movie. Raven however ignored the film and kept reading her book. When the movie ended, it was nearly one o’clock in the morning. “Time to get some rest,” Cyborg said as he stretched and walked off to bed. Robin, Starfire, and Raven followed suit. “Something wrong,” Robin asked, looking back to see his friend staring at a blank TV screen. “I’m fine,” Beast Boy muttered. “Ok, night Beast Boy,” Robin said and he went to his room.
BeBoy Boy sat in the darkness thinking. Two questions were running through his brain. One, why did he bite Red X? He never used his teeth. Second, why was he attracted to blood? Was something wrong with him? Did he lose control over himself and become the animals that he morphed into so many times before? “No,” Beast Boy thought, “I am not an animal, I still have control over myself. But the blood, why do I like seeing it so much now? I never did before. Is what Raven said about me true?” The more Beast Boy thought about it, the more he began to enjoy the idea of blood. “Why not,” he thought, “it may be weird, but it’s not unheard of. But who’s blood would I taste? Robin? I don’t think I could even get close enough. He has some kind of lock that I couldn’t possibly get passed. Definitely not Cyborg; who wants blood and motor oil? Raven? She helped me when she explained the dream to me. What kind of person would I be if I bit her neck? Besides, her powers open her door, no way for me to get in without breaking it down and waking everybody. Starfire? She’s sweet and sensitive. Could I do that do her? No, I will not, I can’t harm a friend.” But something inside Beast Boy would not let the desire pass. He walked to his room and lay down.
The green titan tried to go to sleep. He tossed and turned, but his desire for blood was keeping him awake. “Come on,” Beast Boy shouted into his pillow, “sleep.” He did anything that he could think of to exhaust himself, but nothing seemed to work. “Fine,” Beast Boy said, “I’ll go to the roof, there is nobody up there. I sit there until I get tired.” Getting out of bed, the green changeling walked out of his room and went towards the roof. But as he passed Starfire’s room, he began to desire the taste of blood. Unable to reason himself out of it, Beast Boy walked up to Starfire’s door. Fortunately, or unfortunately, Beast Boy knew Starfire’s combination was a simple musical tune. Beast Boy pressed each button until he knew the sound of each key. Ftherthere, he tried to remember the tune of Starfire’s full combo. “Come on,” Beast Boy said anxiously. How would he explain his actions to the others? “Please don’t wake up Star,” Beast Boy whispered as the door slide open. Quickly and quietly, Beast Boy sneaked inside Starfire’s room and closed the door behind him.
“No one saw me, good,” Beast Boy said. There, lying innocently on her bed, Starfire slept. But Beast Boy’s desire for the taste of blood took over. He crept slowly up to the sleeping alien girl. With Starfire always sleeping with the head hanging off the bed, her neck was open for a bite. “I shouldn’t,” Beast Boy thought, “but I want to.” He lowered he head, opened him mouth, and placed his sharp teeth on Starfire’s neck. “Please don’t wake up,” Beast Boy thought. Slowly, Beast Boy pierced Starfire’s flesh. Blood leaked from the wound while the green titan licked it up. This time, Beast Boy enjoyed the taste. When he was finished, he placed his hand on the puncture wounds to stop the bleeding. Wiping his lips, Beast Boy went back to his room. Back in his room, Beast Boy collapsed just on the floor just inside the door. He slept soundly, better than he had in nights.
