Chapter 1: Calling...
The room was high in the administrative block which in itself was an obelisk of cold grey concrete. It could have passed for underground, what with the darkness from the drawn blinds, and the unnatural chill that hung in the air. It was spacious, but the space was mostly blank. Nothing on the walls or the floor. It seemed a prison cell.
The three bullies who had tried to assail Robin shuffled their feet together, loathing their current location. They stood, nervously facing a plain wooden desk and the one who sat behind it. Even ie dae darkness, they could feel that the person's eyes were on them, stripping them till he could see into their small, quivering souls. The principal was an imposing man indeed.
He spoke.
"You failed to acquire him."
"I can explain, sir!" bald little boy said, earning him a crushed toe from Jinx and a hiss of "Shut up, Gizmo."
The darkness yawned; a feral grin seemed to spread from every corner of the room.
"Quite unnecessary."
The principaood.ood. He was tall, his outline sharp but his features indistinguishable. The three shrank back in fear as he stepped towards them.
"Just accept your punishment."
***
Robin woke, a thin sheen of sweat covering him. He was having a nightmare, one that echoed with the inhuman howls of the tortured damned. Shivering at the cobwebs of sleep that still clung to his senses; he rolled out of his bed. Someone had whispered to him in the midst of his nightmare, and it had made him shiver in spite of the heat.
A glance at his clock told him it was time to get up. Hints of golden light were leaking through the slats in the Venetian blinds. Bracing himself for the blast of sunlight, he yanked the blinds open.
The morning light flooded the room. It was a cheerful Saturday morning outside, but the warmth failed to reach him. The sky vaulted in an endless blue, but he remembered with a shudder that outside, it was nothing but a wide expanse of nothing. Everything was normal within the bounds of the school; fires lit, clocks worked, switches and elevators performed their functions. Yet beyond that...
It isn't possible, he argued with himself as he pulled on his clothes. It has to be a trick of some sort.
He was to meet his new friends so that he could learn more about the school. They were a tightly knit group, but they lacked direction. He pursed his lips grimly. He would lead them, and together they would break free of this abominable school.
In the main hallway of the boy's dorms, he met Cyborg and Beast Boy who were already waiting for him. Together, they went to collect the girls from their dorm, and then made their way to the open where there was less chance of being heard.
"So,” he said, as they sat on the grass, "What else should I know about this place?"
"There isn't much to tell,” Star Fire said.” We don't really know much about it ourselves."
"Except that the principal is evil." Beast Boy chipped in ominously.
"Oh?" Hating a common figure of authority wasn't that unusual, Robin figured. He hadn't much cared who ran the school when he first stepped in, but now, with unreality stretching for infinity around them, he pounced on Beast Boy.
"Tell me more,” he said, urgently, "Who is he? Have you seen him?"
"That's just it,” Beast Boy squeaked, quailing under Robin's intense stare, "No one has seen him. Ever."
"That's not true," Raven said. She looked like she mad made of ice, even in the sunshine. "Some have seen him. Like those three."
"Those bozos from yesterday,” Cyborg added helpfully, noticing Robin's quizzical look. He had settled back in the grass, head resting on the back of his arms.
"I see."
"Not just them,” Raven continued, watching Star Fire braiding a daisy chain. Delicate fingers shaped the stalks into a bracelet that she attached to Raven's wrist. Raven bristled half in annoyance. The corner of her mouth tweaked in what might have been the beginnings of a smile. "There are others who have seen this man, yet they cannot remember what he looks like, how he sounds."
"All are afraid. The few who are sent to him for discipline never commit another transgression," Star Fire said.
Robin shuddered, recalling his dream for some reason. A memory of hard, cool fingers brushing the length of his body made his flesh tingle. He brushed it aside, "What's the deal about names?"
Raven frowned, but it was clear that she wasn't irritated by his question. "I have been here the longest. I have seen and heard strange things."
"Strange?" He had to admit, it was hard to tell what was strange in this school, given the basis for comparison.
"Have you seen the way some of the students behave?" Stare Fire said, a note of distress in her voice. "They walk as if they do not see; they live as if they are dead."
A bit dramatic, Robin thought personally, but he kept silent, thinking back to the people he had seen around the school. It was true. In simpler terms, therre tre those who stalked about like zombies, but he had put it down to the stress from studying. Now he was not so sure.
Cyborg had been dozing, but he caught this serious line of conversation and his brow furrowed. "Rumor says that these people are being controlled, because they lost their names. Kinda like in the old legends, when you could hold mythic power over peopl
"
"That's just ridiculous."
"No it is not!" Star Fire exclaimed, a spark dancing in her eyes. Raven looked away and said nothing, her face was as inscrutable as ever.
"It's possible and you better believe it." Raven said finally, "I... have lost my name. We all have."
Robin's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean? And why aren't you the living dead?"
"Because.. because I don't know." She finished lamely.
A tense silence fell on the group. Beast Boy and Cyborg shifted in their positions.
"I'm sorry." Robin said, after the silence had begun to drag. "Could you just run that by me again?"
"She means she can't remember her real name. I think. I think if we did, we might be able to escape here." Beast Boy said, "Our names are the key... it means, you aren't involved in this yet. You can still escape."
"How can I?”Robin asked, frustration colouring his voice, "There's nothing out there."
Raven looked at him, more seriously than ever, "Yes. That is why we approached you. Your name is still yours."
Well, it certainly fell within his plans. But even if they escaped this loop, he wondered with a small measure of anxiety, what lay before him. What would his benefactor say? The group sunk into quiet again.
Dark clouds had gathered to blot out the sky. It had begun as a fine day, but now it threatened to pour buckets over them all.
He decided. He would explain to Bruce Wayne when he finally made it out. Tell him everything even if he wouldn't believe a word and resolved to receive heavy psychiatric evaluation for his trouble. Right now, friends needed him, and he was going to break them free.
"I think we better go inside." Beast Boy said, picking himself up. The group began to make their way towards the common buildings, but they weren't quick enough. Sheets of rain soaked them liberally when they were halfway across the grounds.
Raven and Robin lagged behind, jogging, since they were already wet to the skin. He looked at her, the water slopping from her clothes.
"You mentioned you were the first here. How long have you been here anyway?"
She walked straight ahead, but he face was taut. For a second, Robin was sure he had offended her again. She turned to face him so suddenly, he nearly walked straight into her face.
"I have been here... sixty years."
She turned again and abruptly continued towards shelter, leaving him standing in the rain thockeocked expression still plastered firmly to his face.
***
From everywhere, he watched. Though they had thought themselves safe out on the grounds, they could not have been more wrong.
A single eye, darkly gleaming, drank in the curves of Robin's soaked body. The shirt plastered to his chest, the wet hair , the water streaming down his face. Beauty to behold, his mirror and his antithesis. For this he had been led here, to play his little game.
He sighed, savouring the thought of possessing him.
Robin. What a pretty little bird.
***
Robin shook himself. Raven's answer had struck him deeply, but he felt foolish standing in the rain. Naked, as the cold seeped into him.
And in the back of his mind, he could just feel again, the voice of someone calling his name.
