Sabrina's mother was thankful that Margrette had given her the go ahead to tell them. "I'm sorry Sabrina, it was Margrette's wish and I had to stand by it." Endora took a deep breath and began her tale. "You see Miss Johnston, your mother and I go way back. We were the best of friends and we shared everything from the good to the bad. There wasn't anything that the other didn't know and our lives were tightly intertwined. After I got married our friendship didn't end, it just seemed to grow stronger. When Margrette finally found someone, well it just made things even better. We hung out together more and the guys seemed to get along really well too. Then I tried to get pregnant and things didn't go so well. We had to have help."
Sabrina was still stuck on the fact that she had a twin sister. She still didn't understand why her Mother had not told her about this sooner.
"Mom, why? You could have told me about my sister."
Endora knew that Sabrina didn't understand how deep her friendship with Margrette went. They had made that promise long ago and it had to be kept. "Sabrina dear I couldn't, I swore I would never tell another soul. It not only affected you but other lives as well. There could be no exceptions." Sabrina was a bit disappointed with that answer but there was nothing she could do about it now.
Endora didn't like the fact that she had to keep this secret bound inside her for so long, but it was her only choice. "To continue the story, we turned to a fertility clinic for help. As it was, they were successful beyond our wildest dreams. You see, we wound up with two sets of twins, four children that we could not possibly afford to have. We didn't have the money to raise four children. So we told the clinic to put the 3 remaining fertilized eggs "on ice" so to speak. And I became pregnant with you, Sabrina."
"Mrs. Mustelidae that doesn't explain how I got where I am now." Said Sabrina Johnston. Then a look of horror came over Sabrina Johnston's face. In a voice near panic Sabrina asked, "Then you're my real mother?" She didn't know what to do as the realization sank in.
"Sabrina please calm down, there's more to this story." Endora said as she gathered her courage. "I am your biological mother yes but just listen to the rest. I will explain everything." Sabrina Johnston just sat there and nodded, her body felt numb.
"OK." She paused and then continued. "I was nearing the end of my term somewhere about my eighth month when I got a very disturbing phone call. It was from Margrette, she was crying and very, very upset. I was so terrified by her emotional state that I was afraid she might do something terrible to herself.
She told me that they had been trying very hard to have a child and things weren't working out. They had consulted a doctor and he told them some horrible news. She was sterile, no hope for any children ever. I could hear it in her voice that her heart was broken. Something had to be done, I wanted desperately to go and see her. However in my condition I couldn't travel too far. As I talked to her an idea formed in my head but I needed to discuss it with my husband first."
"You gave one of your eggs to my mother," Sabrina Johnston interrupted with tears streaming down her face.
Endora nodded her head. "Yes, it wasn't an easy decision but my husband and I talked it over and we knew Margrette and her husband would make excellent parents. You see ladies, Warren understood my relationship with Margrette, he always has. He understood it when he married me and he understood when I asked if this could be done. Margrette was also better off financially than we were. We knew that we would be holding back a mother's love for a child that was so desperately needed. It also forged a bond between us that seemed almost unbreakable. So I called her and told her the news. Margrette couldn't believe her ears when we told her. The egg was flown to Ottawa where Margrette was impregnated and she had a beautiful daughter and named her Sabrina. And that's the whole story."
Both girls were in tears. This was the most astounding thing that either of them had ever heard. Sabrina was near bursting with pride for her mother, so thoughtful and self-sacrificing that she had to cry. Through tears she said, "Mom that's the most moving thing I have ever heard. I don't know what to say, I'm so proud of you." She got up and went to her mother's side and gave her the biggest hug she had ever given her. "I love you mom."
"I love you too, sweetie." Endora returned her daughter's hug. Moments like this were what she lived for. She glanced up at the other Sabrina who was still crying. She knew that she needed her mother but she was a long ways away.
"Come here Sabrina and give me a hug, I'm as close to your mother as your gonna get right now." She walked over and was swept into Endora's arms.
Sabrina Johnston felt so much closer to home just then. This woman was her mother in one fashion. She couldn't believe that her whole life could change in a matter of moments.
Looking at her mother a thought came to Sabrina, "Seems that you have one more secret to tell us, I think. It has to deal with our other sister Tabitha."
"Yes you're right that is another interesting story in itself. After your birth things got very busy at home and my conversations with Margrette became less and less. I realized we were drifting apart and I couldn't let that happen. I began to call more and more often, putting our phone bills through the roof. I took on several kids to baby-sit just to pay them. Finally your Dad found a better job and we got back on our feet so to speak. As time went by we focused our attention on raising you. As you grew up and moved out on your own, your father and I decided that it was time to have the remaining twins."
Both girls were on the edge of their seats just itching to know what happened next.
"As it went I had just received confirmation that things had taken and the twins were doing fine inside me. However when your father got laid off and our car was demolished in that horrible crash, we weren't doing well financially."
"Yes I remember that, Dad still limps because of it." Sabrina said.
"Yes it's a wonder he still has his legs, the other car almost cut them off," Endora said with a sad look in her eyes.
"Poor Dad, I can still remember him in the hospital; he didn't like being there very much."
"Well after that we had a big talk. With him being in and out of the hospital and little income; we were close to losing the house. The outcome this time didn't look good with twins on the way. I again came up with a solution to our problems but he wasn't at all happy to what I proposed to him. A man does have his pride and your Dad's was hurt severely. In the end he relented, the facts were plain as day. We could not afford to have both children. It would be impossible with him not working and me at home. It just wasn't to be so, we called upon Margrette and asked if she would like to adopt one of the children."
Sabrina Johnston smiled "I know the answer to that one."
"Margrette was ecstatic to hear this. They agreed to take the child and we did a sex test on the children."
"Ah … why a sex test mom?" Sabrina asked.
"Well Margrette needed to know what colour to paint the room. And what type of clothes to buy."
"Oh, I see. I just wondered."
"Well you know the outcome, they were both girls. So my husband decided that he would name them after one of his distant relatives he liked a long time ago. Since they would live apart and in all probability never see each other, he opted to call them both Tabitha."
"I wondered how they got the same name." Sabrina said. "You hid the fact that you were carrying twins from me, I see that now."
"Yes dear, it was the only way. Since we knew that Tabitha was to be adopted we didn't want you inadvertently finding out about your twin. So we did what we thought was right by sending you to your Aunt Cathy's while I grew huge and gave birth.
"Yeah, I remember." This was bringing back that horrible argument she had with her parents about leaving. "I wasn't too happy about that fact. I didn't want to leave you knowing you were going to have a baby."
"I know, I remember, you almost blew it for us. Actually Margrette looked after both of them for awhile. When she came to pick Tabitha up she took ours with her as well. Your father and I were both on the verge of nervous breakdowns after their births. We were quarreling and yelling most of the time. So Margrette took our Tabitha for awhile to ease some of the tension. When you called to extend your stay with Aunt Cathy to take that college course you helped us get back on track. In many ways you're responsible for us staying together, your timing couldn't have been better. In the end I think you enjoyed your stay there."
"Yeah I had a great time, she had this grand cottage by the lake where I did a lot of swimming and boating. Plus I got a diploma in character art."
"Sounds like a wonderful place Sabrina, I wish I could have been there with you. But I see now why I got to spend a year at my Uncle's in British Columbia. And it explains how my mom got pregnant. All this was done so that the two Tabithas could be together. You certainly came up with quite a plan."
"Tabitha being away for that short time worked wonders for us. So much so that your Dad found a job that he could handle, a good paying one at that. Things finally seemed to turn our way and we haven't looked back since. When you returned, Sabrina, you were none the wiser and you had a new baby sister. Never really knowing or suspecting you had another two sisters living in Canada. Now you have the whole story. How each of you got to be where you are now. It's actually a good time for you two to have found each other. You're old enough to enjoy each other's company."
Sabrina Johnston was heavy in heart. She was torn knowing that Endora was her biological mother but she wanted her real mother. She felt so far away and she needed her now.
"Mrs. Mustelidae could I use your phone, I would like to call my mom."
"I understand completely dear, it's in the kitchen on the wall. Just dial the number, don't worry about the charges. Say "hi" to your mom for me and take as long as you like." She knew that Sabrina Johnston had a huge weight upon her. Who to love? It was a choice that her Sabrina didn't have but she did. She knew in the end who she would choose, there was no contest. But she also knew that this lovely girl would put a space in her heart for her as well.
Endora now turned her attention to Sabrina. "Well my little one, how do you feel now knowing the big secret I kept from you all these years?" Asked Endora with relief knowing it was finally out.
"Good mom, really good, now that I know I have two more sisters; I don't know how you kept from telling me all these years." She smiled and knew how much her mom loved her. "Mom, I know how hard it must have been for you to give up your unborn children. I'm so proud of you."
"It wasn't easy dear, believe me, it wasn't easy at all. We thought about what we were doing very carefully. And now that I can look back on things I think we made the right choice."
"The only thing I don't understand is why her name is Sabrina. Is she named after me?"
"No not really, Margrette's mother's name is Sabrina."
"Oh! So I'm named after Margrette's mother." Sabrina thought she might as well find out where her name came from.
"Actually I didn't know Margrette's mother, she had died before we even met. No your name comes from a book my mother read to me from." Endora got up and went to her bookcase and looked through the odd books she had there. "Ah, here it is." She pulled out an old thin book. "It's a book of poetry, some of which is very lovely. It's by a Sabrina Karlyol. And she is the inspiration for your name. It was simply coincidence that you are both called Sabrina.
Sabrina looked at the old book. "Can I borrow this?"
"Sure dear." She smiled as she handed over the book.
"Well it looks like my surprise backfired. I thought I would get you but instead you got me, real good," Sabrina said with a twinkle in her eye.
"Well I was surprised to see your twin, knowing that she lived in Canada. Do you know how long she is staying here? I would love to have her to dinner some night. Just to get more acquainted."
"She said she was here for another 3 weeks with her Aunt, so I think we can arrange time for a dinner." Sabrina said with a smile.
Finally Sabrina Johnston returned with watery eyes. She used a handkerchief to blow her nose and dry her eyes. She was having a very emotional day. "Ah ... mom says hi." She said in a raspy voice.
"Are you OK?" Endora said trying to comfort her.
"Just got a bit emotional there, I'll be fine. This is a lot to absorb."
"I know, come and rest for awhile and I'll answer any of your questions. But I'm guessing that your mother has already done that. My husband won't be coming home for lunch today, he has to work. Tabitha is at a friend's house so she'll be back for lunch. Anything special you would like?"
"Nothing I can think of."
"Well then I best get started on something. Tabitha eats like a horse at lunch time." Endora started moving towards the kitchen.
"Can I help?" Sabrina Johnston asked. "It will give me something to do. I feel a bit out of sorts."
"Sure, let's go and make some lunch, ladies."
It didn't take long with the extra hands. Endora found it strange with both of them there together. She had known about Sabrina and even had pictures of her hidden away. She would have to get those out and show Sabrina, she thought. Now that everything was in the open she might as well see them. Endora called Tabitha's friend's house to get her to come home for lunch. Coming through the door at cheetah pace she was surprised to see Sabrina. Tabitha leapt into the air,
Sabrina caught her and gave her a big hug.
"Hi Sabeena, come to see me?"
"No, I brought a friend to see mom, a special friend."
"Really! Really! Can I meet her, can I?"
"Sure you can. Sabrina can you come in here?" She put Tabitha down and waited for her reaction.
Tabitha looked up at her sister and then she saw another Sabrina come through into the living room. "Eeek!" She said as she hid behind her sister's leg.
"What's the matter Tabitha, that's my special friend I wanted you to meet."
"That's you over there!" Tabitha said as she pointed. "How can you be here and there?"
"She is what people call a twin, she looks very much like me. Her name is Sabrina but her last name is Johnston. She is from Canada and she wants to meet you."
"You mean the place where they speak funny?"
Sabrina didn't have an answer for that. Where Tabitha grabbed that from was anyone's guess. Tabitha must have it mixed up with some of the other countries that do indeed sound funny. "Hi Tabitha, it's nice to meet you." Said Sabrina Johnston putting out her hand in greeting.
Tabitha came out from hiding behind her sister. "Hey you don't have glasses like Sabeena."
"You are very observant Tabitha. I don't wear glasses because I don't need them to see properly."
"You're a lot prettier than Sabeena." She said with a big grin.
"Do you think so?" Sabrina Johnston said playing along.
"Yeah, a lot."
Sabrina sighed, she seemed destined to be tormented by her little sister. "OK Tabitha, lunch is ready. Go see mom in the kitchen and we'll be in soon."
"Kay, I love you, bye bye." She said as she ran past.
"She is a little Terror that one. It's hard to believe that she is my sister."
"Wait till you meet mine, if these two ever get together I'm leaving for Alaska."
"I'll book early." Said Sabrina grinning. "Let's go have some lunch."
Tabitha was full of questions throughout lunch but they managed to endure. She ran off back to her friend's house, which left them all alone again. Endora decided she would break out the family photos to show Sabrina Johnston. It was a wonderful day except for some of the more embarrassing photos shown. Sabrina tried to hide but it was no use. As the afternoon progressed Sabrina Johnston called her Aunt and made plans to get supper for her. Sabrina's mother over heard the conversation.
"Sabrina dear I'm sorry but I overheard your conversation. Why don't you and Sabrina take my car and go get your aunt. I'm sure she would welcome a well cooked meal."
"Mrs. Mustelidae I really don't want to impose on you."
"I'm the one who is inviting so it is not a problem. You call your Aunt back and ask her if she would like to join us."
"Thank you Mrs. Mustelidae that is very nice of you."
"Think nothing of it, now go call." Sabrina Johnston went and called her aunt who agreed to come. She also was going to have to explain about the other Sabrina. Hopefully the 80-year-old woman would understand.
Sabrina's Aunt was a little surprised to see them there at the doorway but she settled down quickly. Everything went well and the dinner conversations were lively; it was all a big success. Sabrina dropped the other Sabrina and her Aunt back home. Sabrina bent down and looked through the car window.
"Sabrina, I had a wonderful day, thank you. Your mom is a wonderful person and an excellent cook. My Aunt sure appreciated the company tonight. She finds it a bit lonely around here. She doesn't have many friends to call upon. It's one of the main reasons I'm here, so thanks."
"No problem Sabrina, I have to go into work tomorrow but can I call you after supper."
"Sure, sounds like a plan to me." Sabrina Johnston said. She waved as Sabrina drove off then helped her Aunt back to her apartment. Sabrina Johnston thought to herself that today had been a surprising day. To learn you had two sisters was something that she would never have dreamed. Now hopefully she would have some time to spend with her.
The days went by fast with tours and getting together with friends. Sabrina had to show off her new sister to everyone except for one person. That issue would have to come around later. But for now she was not about to go there. About three days before Sabrina had to return home to Canada, Amy's apartment got an early morning call.
"Hello Amy speaking, Sabrina, yes she is here one moment please." She went to Sabrina's door and gave it a good loud knock. "Sabrina, phone for you, sounds important."
A very sleepy eyed Sabrina opened the door. "Thanks." She said as she proceeded to the living room. She picked up the phone and spoke. "Hello."
"Hello am I speaking to a Miss. Sabrina Mustelidae?" Asked a woman on the other end of the line.
"Yes that's me."
"I'm a nurse at County General, a Miss. Sabrina Johnston and her Aunt have been involved in a serious accident and your number was in her purse. Are you a relation?"
Sabrina was suddenly awakened by this news. "Yes she is my sister! Is she OK?" Sabrina said loudly enough that it got Amy's attention. Amy came back and stood by Sabrina and listened.
"They have both sustained head injuries, more so to her Aunt. I'm afraid she is in critical care. Miss. Johnston has been moved to ward care. Is there anyone else we should notify? I'm afraid most of her belongings were lost, we were lucky to have found this number."
"I can notify the others who will be able to give you more information. What is your name and number there?" Sabrina wrote down her name and number. "Thank you for calling, please use this number to let us know if there is any change in their conditions."
"We will, thank you. Please try to get back to us as soon as possible." The nurse hung up the phone leaving a stunned Sabrina on the other end.
"Sabrina, is everything OK?" Amy said in a soft voice knowing something was terribly wrong.
Sabrina turned to her friend and roommate. She found it hard to get the words out. "Sabrina and her aunt have been involved in a serious accident, both have sustained head injuries."
"Oh no! That's horrible." Amy said as she embraced Sabrina trying to comfort her.
