I will never sleep alone
Whatever you say to me
I already know
If I said something to you
You would take those words
There's so much power in those words
House of Sleep, Amorphis
I stepped out of the shower, pulling a towel around myself. As I dried my hair, I heard the bedroom door open and turned to find Bane walking in. He came over, leaning against the door frame as he watched me. I put down the hair dryer and picked up my brush.
“About the job we’re doing here. I need you to go and make a deal for me. He’s trying to convince me to take half of my usual fee, and he doesn’t respond to my… usual methods of persuasion.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “There’s a party tonight as his club. He’ll meet you in the VIP room. Arnold Walker is his name.”
I nodded, pulling my hair up in a bun. “I can do that, but are you sure you’re not just making an excuse to see what I look like all dressed up?”
“No, but it’s definitely an excuse to get you undressed afterwards.” He took hold of my arm, pulling me in close.
“I need to get ready.” I breathed, looking up at him.
He kissed me, sliding his arms around my body. “Just a minute.”
“One minute.” I laughed, standing on my toes to kiss him again. “And then I really need to get dressed and ready to go.”
He tilted my head up, kissing my neck, chin, cheeks, everywhere. He knew what I liked, and he teased me with it. I knew that by the time I got back from this party I would be just about begging for him.
“I really need to get ready.” I managed to say, between kisses. “Unless you want to just take the deal with Mr Walker, then I could stay here.”
He kissed me one more time, then let me go. “Come see me before you leave.”
I nodded, watching him walk away. It took me half an hour to get ready, but soon I was stepping into my heels and walking downstairs.
Bane was standing in the kitchen, eating an apple, when he saw me coming. “You look beautiful.”
I blushed, clutching my bag behind my back. “Thank you.”
“Jack will drive you there, and wait until you’re ready to leave.” He hesitated for a moment, touching my arm. “I probably don’t really need to warn you, but be careful. He’s not stupid, so be subtle.”
“I’ll be careful.” I pressed a kiss to his cheek, leaving a deep red lip-print on his skin. “I’ll see you soon.”
I walked out to the car, finding Jack leaning on the bonnet. He opened the door for me, then walked around and got in the driver’s side.
“I can drive myself, you know.” I shook my head with a laugh.
“I know. But you don’t have the best track record for defending yourself.” He started the car, driving off. “I’m here just in case anything goes wrong.”
It wasn’t a long drive to the club, and I realised it was one I’d been to before. Only a few times, but it was familiar enough.
“Here.” He handed me a phone. “This is for you. I’ll be waiting here when you come out, but if anything goes wrong, I’m under speed dial 1.”
I nodded, taking it and placing it in my bag. “It shouldn’t take too long.”
Climbing out of the car, I walked up to the bouncer. He must have had a picture of me or something, because he waved me straight on through. The club was packed, but I managed to push my way through the crowd to the door for the VIP room.
The bouncer there stopped me, holding out his hand to make sure I didn’t get too close. “What’s your business here?”
“I’m here to see Mr Walker. He’s expecting me.” I gave him a sweet smile.
“Of course, go right through.” He opened the door, letting me inside.
I walked in, only to come face to face with a man I assumed was Walker’s bodyguard. He looked me over, then held out his hand.
“Hand me your bag.” He ordered me.
I did as I was told, patiently waiting as he rifled through it. I even stood patiently as he pat me down, even though there was nowhere in that club dress that I could have hidden a weapon.
“That’s enough, Johnny. I doubt she’s hiding a weapon anywhere under that dress.” A deep voice came from behind him.
He stepped out of the way, and I looked over at the older man sitting behind him. He was immaculately dressed, clearly rich, and he had a quiet calmness about him that put me at ease.
“Please, Miss Richards, join me.”
I almost hesitated, knowing that he was going to be a hard one to influence. Recovering quickly, I sat across from him.
“When Bane said he was sending a young woman to meet me, I must admit I was a bit surprised.” He tented his fingers on top of the table, watching me closely. “It’s not often that we come across a woman in the mercenary business.”
“I’m not much for the less savoury parts of the business, but I’m very good at making deals.”
He chuckled. “I see. Well, I know that Bane is the best, and I want his work. But the price he’s asking is far higher than what he’s worth.”
I gave him a broad smile, choosing my words carefully and honing in on him. “Of course, I understand that you want to ensure you aren’t being cheated out of your money.”
His face softened a little, and I pushed harder.
“Sure, you could get a lesser group for the price you want to pay, but if you want the work done well, you’ll need to pay more.”
“The price you’re asking for is too high. The best I can do is three hundred.” A small crack appeared in his calm demeanour, and I could feel that I was getting to him.
I reached out and took his hand. “We both know you can do better than that. I really don’t want to waste my time here, there are a lot of other people we could take jobs from who would pay us right.”
He sighed. “Will you take six hundred?”
“Mr Walker, you insult me.” I moved to leave, but he kept hold of my hand.
“One million. But I won’t go any higher.”
I smiled, standing up. “Perfect. I’m glad we could come to an agreement.”
He rose from the table, and we shook hands. Leaving the room, I made my way back out to the car and slipped inside.
He was sitting in the lounge when a message came through from Walker. Surprised that she’d managed to strike a deal so quickly, he opened it.
Your girl drives a hard bargain. One million will be in your account by morning.
Sliding his phone into his pocket, he got up. That was double what he would have charged for a job like this. There was a lot that would need to be done to prepare for this job. He would have to congratulate her when she got back, but until then, he could work on this.
I was exhausted by the time we arrived back at the house. It wouldn’t have shown on my face, but pushing Walker like that was hard. I worried that maybe I’d pushed too far and he would realise what I’d done, but there was no way to go back and change it now.
Walking into the bedroom, I was immediately swept up by Bane. He carried me over to the bed, and lay me down. I bit my lip as he began kissing my neck, wrapping my arms around him.
“I guess I got what you wanted then?” I breathed, moaning as he hit a sweet spot.
“More.” He looked down at me, moving his hand to the side of my neck. “Five hundred would have been enough, but you got double that.”
“I was worried I might have pushed him too hard.”
He shook his head. “He has no idea what you did.”
“It wasn’t easy to get through to him. He pushed against me.” I played with my necklace.
“You’re still holding yourself back.” He slid his free hand down my body, hooking my leg around him. “Why?”
I hesitated, not sure if I even knew the answer to that. “Because… I’m scared of what I might do.”
“You think you’re dangerous?”
“I am dangerous.” I whispered. “I just killed two people, and I’m scared that it will be worse next time.”
“Then you can learn to control it.” He kissed me, gently biting my lower lip. “Let me help you.”
I nodded, resting my hands against his chest. “I should go clean off my makeup.”
“I like how it smudges when I kiss you.” He traced my top lip with his thumb, smudging the red lipstick onto my skin.
I moaned, my lips parting as his thumb continued around and around. No longer feeling tired, I was falling deep into his eyes, and succumbing to his touch.
“Are you planning to undress me?” I breathed, trying to control the shaking that he always seemed to cause in my voice. “Or are we just going to stay here like this for a while longer?”
“A little longer.” He wrapped his arms around me, arching me up as he kissed my chest.
Once again, we were interrupted by a knock on the door. I sighed, using a tissue to clean the lipstick off his face.
“They really have no sense of timing.” I whispered.
“I’m sorry, I’ll be back in a second.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead, then walked over to the door.
While he was out of the room, I headed to the bathroom to clean off my makeup. My lipstick was smudged right around my mouth, and I laughed a little. As I wiped it all off, I felt the tiredness was over me again.
He was right, I was holding myself back. That’s what was causing the exhaustion, it was constantly trying not to go too far. It was my fear of becoming the person that Mick had tried to turn me into.
Once I was make-up free, I headed back to the bed. I wasn’t sure when he would be back, but it didn’t matter, because I quickly fell asleep anyway.
