Chapter Six
When Veronica had heard that Reggie was taking Betty and the baby back to Texas with him, she went ballistic.
“I knew it! I knew once she had that little monster, she would not let him go. I have to put an end to this. Let me think…..” Veronica decided to call Betty.
Betty’s had Reggie long enough. I need him to be with me!
But to Veronica’s dismay, Betty’s cell phone number had been changed. So a very desperate Veronica called the ranch house land line and Betty answered.
“Betty, let Reggie go! You know he loves me. I won’t stand for you holding on to him using that child, do you hear me?”
“For your information, Veronica, Reggie chose to stay with me. Now, lose this number as well!” Betty slammed down the phone, looking at her daughter in her father’s arms. Reggie decided to change his cell and the ranch phone numbers as well.

Their baby was growing fast. They had been living on the ranch with Reggie for a few months and he still gave no sign for them to break up. He was the most doting husband and father.
Even Hiram Lodge saw that Reggie did not want to be with Veronica anymore.
“Veronica, you need to give up on Mantle. It’s been over four months since that child’s been home from the hospital, and he still has not left Betty. There are legions of men who would kill to be with you. He’s not worth it. Let’s take a trip to Hawaii so you can forget him, once and for all.”
“No, Daddy. Reggie will come back to me, you’ll see. I will take a trip though. I want to go to Houston.”
“What for? Stay away from him! Darling, I can’t bear to see you hurt anymore!”
“Don’t worry about me, Daddy. I’ll be alright. I’ll get him away from that home wrecker and he’ll forget all about her and the brat. Oh God, Daddy! I hate her! How could she do this to me? She was my best friend!”
“Don’t cry baby…. Alright, if you want him that much, I’ll help you get him back. Now stop crying okay?”
Hiram Lodge held his only child, trying to comfort her.
Damn that girl!! He had to admit he had been stunned that Betty Cooper would cheat on his daughter like she did. He blamed her totally for this mess.
Reggie is a man and what man can resist a hot young woman? Maybe I should offer him his old job again. God knows profits have been down since I fired him… hmm. Lodge’s mind was going in several different directions as he thought of ways to help his daughter get her heart’s desire. He stayed with Veronica, holding her in his arms until she cried herself to sleep. He eased off her bed and laid her head on her pillow, and quietly left her room.
Mr. Lodge picked up his private phone to call in a few favors. What his baby wanted, she got. No one took what belonged to a Lodge.

Reggie loved to watch as Betty nursed the baby, caressing them both, always with a look of awe on his face. When Betty had her six-week checkup, he was there with her, with the baby in his arms. When she left the examining room, Betty gave him thumbs up. She could start the pill, and they could be intimate in a few more weeks.
Angela had the thick black silky hair of her father and the blue eyes of her mother. Anyone who saw her would have known Reggie Mantle was her father. Betty was very happy Angela looked like him. Despite changing their phone numbers, Veronica was constantly sending messengers to the ranch, begging Reggie to call her. It was obvious to them that things were getting more and more distressed. Betty wondered if she should leave before things got uglier. She said as much to Reggie.
“Nothing doing, babe. I don’t want either of you to leave.” He held her close to make his point. Betty would cherish every minute with him. She knew it would have to end, despite everything he said and the love she felt for him.
Veronica would never allow them to stay married
