Leonardo hopped over the top of the ladder, then reached down to help Lisa climb up onto the roof behind him. Just as he’d said, there was a huge skylight in the middle that was glowing with the lights from the club below. He was nervous... very nervous, because Lisa had had a shower, changed her clothes, fixed her hair, and put on perfume... according to Mike, that meant that this was a date.
Lisa knelt down next to the skylight and watched the band playing. She had a snug little hoodie on, but the zipper was unfastened and her shirt was low cut. He could see her flowery pink bra easily. The silver turtle necklace rested delicately between her breasts and it captivated him. She was smiling and her cheeks were flushed from the climb up. Her bob haircut was growing out, and she’d tucked it behind her ears, revealing her sparkling blue earrings. Her jeans hugged her round backside and thighs. Leonardo thought she was beautiful. Lisa’s smile widened as she recognized a new song that the band had started playing and she looked up at Leo with a grin. The smile fell from her face and was replaced with a look of surprise as she realised that he was looking down her shirt.
“I’m sorry!” Leo said quickly. “I didn’t mean for you to see that.” He winced as the words came out; that sounded bad. “I mean, I didn’t mean... I’m sorry, Lisa.” There was no salvaging it. “It was wrong of me to objectify you like that after everything you’ve been through.” He stepped away from her and leaned against the wall that surrounded the roof.
Lisa looked at Leonardo for a long moment before moving to lean next to him against the wall. He stared down at the street, looking away from her, too ashamed to meet her eyes.
“Why do you do that?” she asked.
“Do what?” he asked, still refusing to look in her direction. His voice was heavy and tense. The wind blew his blue bandana ends back in ripples and Lisa reached out to touch one. He still didn’t turn around.
“Your brothers look at Charlotte all the time - they’re not subtle about it. I’ve even seen you looking her over. You tell her she’s pretty. I’ve heard you.” Lisa sighed and leaned on her elbows to look down at the car lights below. “Mike and Raphael look at me, too,” she said, “and they’re not shy about it. But you... don’t you think I’m pretty, too?” she spat, suddenly.
“What?” Leonardo said, turning to look at her. “Of course I do.”
“So how come you keep acting like it’s wrong to notice me?” Lisa’s eyes welled with tears and she slammed her palm flat against the ledge in anger. “I’ve tried so hard to get your attention, and you just don’t seem to care! Are you secretly in love with Charlotte? Are you gay? Are you training to be some kind of monk?”
Leonardo quirked an eyebrow up in confusion. Why was she mad at him? He looked down her shirt and he apologized; he could understand why that would upset her. He was supposed to be better than that. But what was all this other stuff? Charlie? Gay?
“No, I’m not in love with Charlie and I’m definitely not gay,” he said. “And I’m not a monk, either,” he added. The rest of her words unjumbled in his head. She was trying to get his attention? Something sparked to life inside his chest.
“Why do you keep sending me weird, mixed signals?” Lisa asked. She sounded defeated. “Why do you look down my shirt at work, when you think I’m not paying attention, then act like you’ve been burned when I catch you looking me over when we’re alone?”
Leo gagged on his tongue - she’d seen him looking? He wished the floor would open up and swallow him. There was no coming back from this one.
“I like you, Leo,” Lisa said, softly, looking back down to the street. “This is new for me, too... I’m half afraid of kissing you because I keep thinking of how awful it was when Bubba touched me,” her voice pinched a little as she said the name. “But I’m also half-afraid that you’ll never try. And frankly, I don’t know which is worse.”
Leonardo opened his mouth to speak but no sound came out. He stood there, paralyzed, all of his ninja training failing him. She wanted him to kiss her? Anxiety swept over him; how was he supposed to do that? Don hadn’t been afraid... Charlie had understood... he moved a little closer to Lisa.
“Why won’t you let yourself want me?” Lisa asked, looking up to his face with soft eyes. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear that the breeze was blowing around. “I know you like me, Leonardo,” she smiled and moved a little closer to him. “I was trying to make myself into the same person I used to be, but I don’t think that will ever happen.” Lisa smiled as the wind blew his bandana ends again. He looked so strong and... handsome? He looked handsome. “But I like who I am when I’m with you,” she finished.
“I don’t want to make you afraid again,” Leonardo said, bitterly. “You called Bubba a monster... he was, but so am I. I’m not human, Lisa.”
“But you’re not an animal, either,” Lisa said. “Bubba was an animal.” She shivered in the cold breeze and rubbed her hands over her arms to warm herself. “You’re my friend, my hero,” she said before shyly adding, “my Leonardo.”
Leonardo found himself reaching for her hands. He ran his three fingers up her arms and closed the gap between them. His heart thundered under his plastron and as he looked at her wet, sincere eyes, flushed cheeks, and trembling lips, he realised that he was standing on the threshold of a whole new life. He’d always felt like he was so different from his brothers. Social interaction was so easy for them, but he had to be so disciplined... he had to be the leader, the grownup, the bad guy, the nag, the bore, the stick-in-the-mud. He’d followed the rules to the point where he’d regulated himself into a weird kind of half-existence where he wouldn’t let himself just live and breathe like a normal person. What had he been so afraid of?
Leonardo took a deep breath. Lisa had just told him that she’d changed forever, but that she liked who she was when she was with him... Leonardo hated who he was without Lisa... He smiled shyly at her. He only liked himself when he was with her.
“Mona Lisa,” he whispered, as he pulled her gently into his arms.
Lisa trembled inside as she smiled and tilted her face up to Leonardo, waiting for his kiss. When he hesitated, she stood on her tiptoes and reached her arms up around his neck so they were only an inch apart. Leo closed the gap, barely allowing his lips to brush hers.
Leonardo’s heart fluttered as Lisa’s incredibly soft lips moved slightly under his and he tightened his grip around her waist ever so slightly. She smelled like peach shower gel and gentle perfume and it turned his brain to mush. When Lisa opened her wet mouth ever so slightly and flicked her tongue over his lips, it was all he could do to keep from jumping as his erection went to it’s fullest size frighteningly fast. He opened his mouth and tentatively met her tongue with his.
Lisa giggled at the sudden purr that escaped Leonardo’s throat. He pulled his mouth away, blushing deeply. He coughed slightly and the sound went away. He was about to apologize for the noise, but stopped himself. That was what the old Leo would do.
“Charlotte told me about that,” Lisa smiled, leaning in to rest her head under his chin. She nuzzled her noise against the side of his neck and Leo was very surprised to hear the sound start again. He found himself nuzzling back.
