Think of me, I'll never break your heart
Think of me, You're always in the dark
I am your light, your light, your light
Think of me, You're never in the dark
Think, Kaleida
I jerked awake, panicking when I found myself in an unfamiliar room. Bane caught me before I tumbled off the bed, gently lifting me into his lap. I could barely breathe, my chest tight as I tried to calm down.
“I killed them… didn’t I?” I looked up into his calm eyes. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean… I didn’t know I could do that.”
He held me close to his chest, running his fingers through my hair. “I should have been the one to end it, but there was no other way this could have ended. She would have just kept coming back.”
I nodded, taking a deep breath. “So… it’s over?”
“It’s over.” He kissed the top of my head. “I promise.”
Closing my eyes, I rested my hands on his chest so that I could feel his heart beating. I’d never killed anyone before, and now I’d killed two people. I didn’t feel guilty though. Now that I was calming down, I just felt relief. It felt wrong, but I wasn’t going to question it.
After a few minutes, I climbed off his lap and walked over to the window. I could see the ocean across the road, and it was a beautiful view. As I looked out, I felt Bane walk up behind me and wrap his arms around me.
“Where are we?” I asked, watching the people on the street below.
“Istanbul.”
I turned to face him in surprise. “We’re in Turkey?”
He nodded. “We carried you down the mountain and started the trip home. We had to stop here to refuel anyway, and I thought it would be easier for you if you woke up here rather than on the plane. I sent the others on ahead.”
“Is Jack okay?”
“He’s fine. A little beaten up, but nothing he hasn’t dealt with before.” He took hold of my waist, lifting me onto the windowsill.
I took hold of his shirt, pulling him in close. “So it’s just us then?”
“Just us. We can fly back tomorrow.”
“Good.” I kissed him deeply, wrapping my arms around his neck.
He listened to her breathing as she slept, his arm around her waist as he lay behind her. It felt good to have her back in his arms, and only a major disaster would have pulled him away from her then.
His phone buzzed with a message, and he reluctantly let her go to check it. It was from an old client, in Central City.
I have a job for you. When can we meet? It read.
He messaged back, saying he would be back in town tomorrow. Then he rolled back over, holding her close again. She stirred a little, sliding her arm over his, but quickly settled back into sleep.
He knew they needed to get up and leave soon, and even though once they got back they would have a little time to relax, he didn’t want to wake her yet.
“Where is everyone staying?” I asked, as we drove out of the airport.
Bane shrugged. “We found a small warehouse downtown.”
“Mum owns a place that could fit everyone. I’m guessing it’s not often that any of you get to sleep in proper beds. Turn right here.”
He followed my directions, and we soon pulled up in front of the large townhouse. I got out of the car, jumping over the small gate and walking up to the door. There was no key to unlock the door, not since I returned after my father died. Mum had a high-tech security system put in after that, so all it took was a code and a fingerprint.
I stepped inside, noticing that the lounge had been recently cleaned. I’d forgotten that she regularly hired a cleaner to come in.
Turning back to Bane, I held out my hand. “Can I borrow your phone?”
He handed it over with a nod, leaning in to press a kiss to my cheek. I took his hand and gently pulled him upstairs, dialling mum’s number on the way. When I got her answering machine, I paused.
“Hi, Mum. It’s me. We’re staying in the townhouse, so you can cancel the cleaner. I’ll call you soon.”
Hanging up, I pushed open the door to the master bedroom. “There are three other bedrooms aside from this one, the security is tight, and it’s not listed under either mine or mum’s name. It’s safe. I can add everyone to the fingerprint scanner later. Does this work for you?”
“Only if I’m sharing this room with you.”
I turned, standing on my toes to kiss him. “Works for me.”
He pushed me back towards the bed, his hand on my waist. I pulled him down onto the mattress with me, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“Are you planning on telling the others that they can come here?” I asked, looking up into his eyes.
“Soon. I want some more time with just the two of us first.” He pressed a kiss to my jaw, then my collarbone, then the top of my chest.
I was so lost in the feel of his touch that I didn’t notice for a moment that his phone was buzzing in the back pocket of my shorts. I sighed, pulling it out and handing it to him when I saw it was Barsad.
“You should answer it.” I whispered. “I can wait a little longer.”
He kissed me, then got up. While I waited for him, I headed into the hallway and got the bedding for all the rooms. I figured they would all be able to make their own beds, but I was feeling nice enough to get everything ready for them.
I returned to the bedroom just as he hung up the phone. “Is everything alright?”
He nodded. “They were wondering why we hadn’t arrived yet, so I told them to come here. We’re getting interrupted sooner rather than later.”
“Well,” I walked over to him. “Once we let them in, we could come back up here. This room is soundproofed, and the door locks.”
He lifted me up onto the dresser, softly kissing my neck. I held him close and ran my fingers along his back.
“Can I ask you a question?” I whispered, not wanting him to stop, but really wanting an answer to what had been plaguing me for a week.
“Anything.” He pulled away so he could look at me.
Blushing under his gaze, I gently took hold of his hand. “If you aren’t wearing your mask anymore, how are you getting Venom into your system?”
“I’ve been injecting it.” He pressed a kiss to the back of my hand. “I only need it twice a day. Why do you ask?”
“Just curious.” I shrugged. “There’s a lot I still don’t know about you.”
“Then ask.” He twisted a piece of my hair around his finger. “I promise I’ll tell you what you want to know."
I hesitated, not wanting to push. “It’s just… some of the things that Talia said. It sounded like you two were really close. What happened?”
He took a moment to answer, a thoughtful look on his face. “What did she say to you?”
“Not much.” I let go of him, wrapping my arms around myself. “Just that you really loved her. She said that I was just a replacement for her.”
He shook his head. “You’re not.”
“I know. She was just trying to get under my skin.”
“I did love her. And she chose me when I left the league. But she didn’t know her father would disown her. She grew angry, vindictive, and I broke it off. Then her father died, and she took over the league and started coming after me.” He fell silent, touching my arm.
I wanted to know more, but I wasn’t going to push him if he didn’t want to talk. Instead I just leaned in and kissed him gently.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck. “I shouldn’t have pried.”
He pulled me in close, shaking his head. “I promised I would answer you.”
“You did, but I can be patient if there are things you’re not ready to discuss yet.” I nuzzled my nose against his, then kissing him.
“The others will be here soon.” He breathed, moving to kiss my neck. “We should go downstairs.”
“I suppose.” I kissed his cheek, then slid off the dresser. “I guess I should get your fingerprints in the system.”
He took my hand, squeezing gently and we headed downstairs. It was easy enough to add him to the system, and I added the others as they arrived. They brought food, and everyone’s luggage.
“Your security is really good.” Jack said, looking around.
“Mum had it all put in when I came back here. She was paranoid after my dad was murdered.” I bit my lip. “She’s dealt with it now, but she was so scared that if I was here alone I would get killed too.”
“Instead you picked up a mercenary crew.” He laughed.
“She’s far happier about that than me dying.” I looked at the time, yawning a little. “Now that you can get in and out, I’m going to bed.”
Everyone else had gone back out, or were up in their rooms, so I knew it was later than I’d meant to head to bed. Bane was sitting with his feet up on the bed reading, and he looked up as I entered.
“You didn’t have to do this.” He said quietly. “We would have been just fine in the warehouse.”
I shook my head, sitting down at his feet. “After the bed you put me in back in Gotham, I want a bed that’s actually comfortable.”
I felt him move behind me, his legs either side of mine. Pressing a kiss to the top of my head, he wrapped his strong arms around me and held me close.
“I thought you should know, before I came to get you, I went to your mother’s house and made sure your ex went straight back to prison.” He softly kissed my shoulder. “You can go deal with him if you want.”
I looked at him in surprise. “You met my mum?”
He nodded. “She’d roughed him up by the time I got there. But she was happy to hand him over.”
Turning, I gently pushed him down onto the bed and climbed on his waist. I knew I should be getting some sleep, but I was finally back with him and I really didn’t want to waste a moment.
