And my fury stand ready.
I bring all your plans to nought.
My bleak heart beats steady.
'Tis you whom I have sought.
And My Fury Stands Ready, My Dying Bride
I could feel that I was on a chair, my hands tied behind me, but I didn’t really want to open my eyes yet. There were voices, and I took a moment to listen to what they were saying.
“He was a few hours behind us, shouldn’t be long before he gets here.” Talia commented. “If she doesn’t wake up soon, we’ll have to do it ourselves.”
I slowly opened my eyes, looking over at her. She was standing in the doorway, looking out at the mountains around the temple. The sun was just coming up, so I must have been out an hour or two.
“She’s awake.” A male voice from beside me said.
I stayed quiet, watching as she turned and walked over to me. There was so much I wanted to say, so much anger I wanted to spit in her face, but I knew it would do nothing except get me hurt.
“Welcome back.” She took hold of my face, but I pulled away.
I glared up at her, annoyance taking over my fear. She sighed, sliding her hands into her pockets.
“Not feeling very talkative?” She pulled over another chair and sat down in front of me. “I guess I wouldn’t be either. That’s fine, I’ll just talk.”
She pulled a switchblade out of her pocket, playing with it. I don’t know if she was doing it for fun or whether she thought it would intimidate me, but I didn’t react. I just silently sat there, watching her.
“Did he tell you about me?” She asked.
I still didn’t reply, and I guess that was the wrong choice because she suddenly slapped me. Then she grabbed my face, making sure I was looking at her.
“Answer the question.”
“He told me a little.” I admitted, taking a deep breath as I tried to calm myself down. The stinging heat on my cheek didn’t make that easy. “Only when your threats couldn’t be ignored any longer.”
She grinned, sitting back. “Are you sleeping with him?”
I hesitated. The more information I gave to her, the more she could attack me with. But if not telling her led to me being beaten up, then I obviously would have to talk. Finally, I nodded.
“A pretty replacement, but he got himself kicked out of the league over his love for me. I doubt he will ever love you as much.”
That pang of jealousy I’d felt when I saw her picture was back, and I knew she could see it on my face.
“Did I touch a nerve?” She tapped the blade of her knife against my knee. “Did you really think he would love you?”
I bit the inside of my cheek, slowly trying to loosen the ropes around my wrists behind me. “What do you want?”
“I want you so broken that the guilt destroys him. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of time because you told him where you were, so I’ll have to settle for a smaller target.”
“So what are you going to do?” I asked. “Try and destroy my relationship by convincing me that I’ll never be loved by him? He’s coming all this way to rescue me, but sure, he doesn’t care about me at all.”
A look of anger crossed her face, and I realised I’d fucked up. She flipped the knife open again, slamming the blade into my thigh. I cried out, closing my eyes as tears began to pour down my cheeks.
“And don’t do your healing thing, or I’ll cut out your tongue.” She bandaged up my leg, pulling tight to stop the bleeding. “You can deal with the pain.”
I breathed deep, focusing my attention on my wrists and the rope around them. It wasn’t easy, because the pain in my leg was almost more than I could bear.
“Stay with me now.” She tapped the knife against my cheek, leaving blood on my skin.
Opening my eyes, I looked at her. The white hot pain just kept surging through me, and I could barely think, but I kept working at the ropes.
“He used to trap my hands behind my back and work my body over until I screamed his name.” She watched my face for a reaction. “He promised me that nothing would come between us. It was the one promise he never kept. And he won’t keep the ones he made to you either. He won’t rescue you.”
My head felt so light, and it was like my whole body had gone weak. The edges of my vision were so blurry, and I was having trouble focusing on her.
He could see the temple, and he quickened his pace as he got closer. He’d never been one for praying, but right then he was praying he got there in time. Every minute it took for him to get there was another minute Talia had to hurt Alex.
He turned, making sure he was coming from a direction where they would be less likely to see him and his men. They would know he was coming, but he still had the element of surprise because he doubted they knew exactly when he would get there.
In the last stretch of the hike, he realised he could hear voices coming from inside the stone temple. Both of the voices were familiar, and he knew things were quickly getting out of hand.
I woke to another slap in the face, opening my eyes to find Talia glaring at me.
“It’s not time for sleep, Alex.” She slapped me again, making sure I stayed conscious. “He’s going to be here soon.”
“You shouldn’t have stabbed me then.” I breathed, trying to focus my attention back on the ropes. They were definitely looser now, and if I could just stay awake, I would be able to get them off.
She opened her mouth to say something, probably to attack me again, but then one of her men walked over.
“They’re coming.” He said quietly.
She nodded, turning and standing in front of me. “Stay with her. I’ll deal with him myself.”
The man walked behind me, his hand tight on my shoulder. I panicked a little, realising I wouldn’t be able to keep pulling at my bindings while he was there.
With nothing to focus on, I started fading out again, only for him to aggressively shake me. Over and over again, until I heard footsteps coming.
“You never were one for subtlety, Bane. Why are you trying to hide now?” Talia called out.
“I’m not hiding, Talia.” Came a voice from the side entrance near me.
I looked over to see him walking in. He punched the man, knocking him over, then crouched down beside me.
“Are you alright?” He asked.
“I’ve been better.” I whispered, giving him a small smile.
He pressed a kiss to my forehead, subtly dropping a small knife into my hands. As he walked over to Talia, I realised she would be distracted and not paying attention to me.
I took a chance, quietly beginning to hum. The vibration washed over my body, and I felt the wound in my leg knit itself back together. Then I focused on cutting the rope.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you without your mask.” She said quietly. “You look good.”
“That’s enough, Talia. You wanted me here, and here I am.” He stood in place as she paced around him. “This has gone on for far too long.”
“She’s really changed you, hasn’t she? You’ve gone soft.” She glared at me as she passed.
He grabbed her by the arm. “I said, enough.”
She drew her fist back to punch him, but he dodged. They began to fight, back and forth, each landing a few hits then taking a few. It was oddly mesmerising to watch.
I could feel the rope beginning to fray under the knife, but it was a weird angle, and I was getting a cramp in my arm. I didn’t know how much time I had until the man behind me came to, and I was going as fast as I can.
Then I felt it snap, releasing my hands. I stretched my fingers, trying to work out what to do next, when suddenly I was grabbed and pulled backwards, causing me to drop the knife. Hitting the ground, I recovered quickly, far more focused now that I was healed. But I was still facing the issue that I was completely untrained.
The man hauled me up by my shirt, throwing me against the wall. I tried to fight back, but he managed to wrap his hands around my throat. As he squeezed, beginning to choke me, I saw what was going on behind him.
Talia was too fast, and I could see that she was slowly overpowering Bane. I panicked, and went with the only option I had left. Scratching at my attacker’s face with my nails, aiming for his eyes. He flinched back, giving me an opportunity to shove him away.
Almost in slow motion, I watched as Talia knocked Bane down and then advanced on him with a knife. I screamed out, but it was more than scream somehow. It was like a physical wave of sound exploded out from me, sending Talia and my attacker tumbling out of the temple.
I stopped it when I heard shouting, but it was exhausting and I collapsed, unconscious before I hit the ground.
He looked over at her in shock, noticing that she was swaying. Running over, he managed to catch her as she fell. As he carefully lowered her to the ground, he heard his men come running up.
“What happened?” Barsad asked, looking down at him.
“She sonic screamed.” He replied, standing up and walking over to the entrance. “Knocked Talia out of the temple.”
He made his way to the edge of the cliff, looking down. It was a long drop, maybe a hundred metres, and he could just make out what looked like Talia’s body. There was a moment of regret, but he couldn’t tell if it was because he’d wanted this to end without her death, or if he wanted to be the one who killed her. Sighing, he turned and walked back to his men.
“What do we do?” Rob asked.
“We leave. We’ll have to carry her back down the mountain.”
