Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation. Kahlil Gibran
The ambulance got to the hospital quickly, and I was wheeled straight into the ER. Scared and surrounded by staff, I tried not to panic.
“She’s bleeding and only 33 weeks. She needs a c-section so we can get the baby out of there.” One of the doctors said.
I looked around frantically. “I can’t… not without Bruce.”
Emily looked over at the doctor. “The police called him once we found her. I’ll go check the waiting room.”
She took off, and I tried to calm down as an IV was placed in my arm. There were so many voices around me, and I just wanted Bruce by my side.
“Eve?”
I looked over at the voice to find him pushing through the doctors. He took my hand then looked over at them.
“What’s happening?” He asked.
“We’re taking her for a c-section. You can come with us, the nurse will help get you ready.”
He leaned down to press a kiss to my forehead. “I’ll see you in there.”
A nurse rushed him towards the OR, and I was pushed along behind. Another contraction started, and I clutched at the hand of the nearest nurse. The pain was getting worse, and I was in tears again.
“You’re doing great.” The nurse told me, squeezing my hand. “I’m going to help you sit up, so that the anaesthesiologist can do the epidural.”
As she helped me up, Bruce came through the door, dressed in scrubs. He took my hand, his bright blue eyes on mine.
“It hurts so much.” I whispered, trying to focus on him as a needle was injected into my back.
“I know, Eve. Just look at me. Focus on my voice.”
I nodded, just watching his face. I could already feel my body getting numb, and I was so tired. The nurse helped me lie back on the tilted bed, and Bruce sat on a stool beside me, still squeezing my hand.
“I’m so scared.” I wiped my eyes, trying not to focus on all the staff buzzing around or the sensation of blood that I could still feel between my legs.
“Me too.” He ran his fingers through my hair. “But you are strong, and so is our baby. You’re going to be fine.”
“Can you feel this?” The doctor asked.
I couldn’t see what he was doing, and I didn’t feel anything, so I shook my head.
“We’re going to get started. If you feel any pain at all, let us know. You might feel some pressure, or a little breathless, but we’ll tell you when those are likely to happen.”
I looked at Bruce, who gave me a soft smile. He pressed a kiss to my hand, holding it gently.
“Remember what we learnt in your birthing class? Breathe in for five counts, and out for seven.” He mimed the breathing with his free hand.
I nodded, copying him. There was a strange tugging sensation against my belly, but I just kept focusing on Bruce’s face. Or at least, I attempted to. The room suddenly began to spin, and the lights seemed too bright.
“Her blood pressure is dropping. She’s going to pass out.”
My eyelids were so heavy, and I couldn’t hold them open anymore. I felt Bruce suddenly pull away from me, but I was already on my way out.
I could feel cool air on my face, and it was so nice. My arms and legs felt heavy, and I knew I should open my eyes and look around, but I wasn’t ready yet. Then I remembered what had happened, and my eyes flew open in a panic.
“Stay still, Eve.” Bruce gently took my hand. “You don’t want to tear the stitches.”
“The baby?” I asked, terrified of the answer.
He gave me a big smile. “She’s just fine.”
“She?” I burst into happy tears.
“A baby girl.” He leaned in to softly kiss me. “I gave her the name you chose, and I think it suits her perfectly. But we never decided on a middle name, so I guessed one. I probably should have waited, but I got a little flustered with everything happening.”
“What did you come up with?”
He hesitated, clearly unsure of what my reaction would be. “Kelsie Grace.”
“I love it.” I squeezed his hand.
“Welcome back!” A nurse walked into the room. “How are you feeling?”
I took a second to judge. “My stomach feels a little tight, and I’m a bit sore.”
“That’s pretty normal.” She opened my file, then looked up at the machine I was connected to. “Your vitals look good. You’ll be here for a few days, especially after that little scare you gave us in the operating room.”
“Can I see my baby?”
She gave me a small nod, injecting something into my IV. “Your baby is in the NICU. Once you’re up and moving a little, we can put you in a wheelchair and get you down there. She’s being well taken care of, I promise. Just take a couple of hours to wake up. You’ve had major surgery, it will take a little time to get back to your normal.”
After she left the room, I looked over at Bruce. I was dreading the next question I wanted to ask, but I needed the answer to that too.
“Harvey?”
“He’s in Arkham again. In the highest security area.” He kissed my hand. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he would come for you in broad daylight like that.”
I shook my head. “This isn’t your fault, Bruce. I don’t know why he did what he did, but I’m just glad all three of us are safe. I was scared you wouldn’t get the alert.”
He didn’t reply, just softly traced circles on my arm. I took a moment to breathe, then moved my feet slowly. I wanted to get up and move around, so I could go see Kelsie, but I was so tired still.
“I know you want to go see her, but just rest for a bit, okay?” He played with my hair. “We’ll go soon.”
I nodded, realising I was pretty tired and close to falling asleep again. “You’ll be here when I wake up?”
“Of course I will.”
I drifted off quickly, falling into a deep sleep. The next time I opened my eyes, he was asleep beside me, and the sun was coming up outside. My wound was starting to hurt, but I could move my legs more and felt less heavy. I must have been out for hours, but it was hard to tell, since I didn’t know what time I’d woken up before.
Pressing the nurse button, I couldn’t decide whether I should wake Bruce. He looked so peaceful, curled up on the chair.
“Did you have a nice nap?” The nurse asked. “I came by to check on you half an hour ago, but you were completely out.”
“It was definitely a good one. I want to get up and move around, but I’m in a bit of pain. Is there anything more I can have to deal with that?”
“I’ll give you a little more.” She wrote it down in my file. “If you manage to get to the door and back, with help, we can get you downstairs to the NICU.”
It took a few minutes but soon the pain was subsiding. I managed to slowly swing my legs around to the side of the bed so that I was facing Bruce.
“Wake up, sleepyhead.” I laughed a little, poking him with my foot.
He stirred, opening his eyes. “You’re sitting up. You look much more awake than I feel.”
“The nurse let me have some more pain medication. I’m still tired, but I want to get moving now.”
“Let me help you.” He stood, taking my hand.
I carefully slid off the bed, taking a second to make sure I was steady. My feet and calves ached a little from not being used for a while, but I seemed to be okay.
“Doing okay?”
I nodded. “I think so. Let’s start walking and see.”
We slowly walked to the door, pulling my IV pole along with us. It wasn’t easy, I was still feeling a bit dizzy, but we made it there and back. The nurse returned, having spotted us on our short walk.
“How are you feeling after your short walk?” She asked, pushing a wheelchair in.
“Tired, but everything seems alright.”
She smiled at me, softly touching my shoulder. “I can take the two of you down to the NICU now, if you’re ready.”
I nodded, squeezing Bruce’s hand. He helped me into the chair, and we headed to the lift. As we moved along the corridors to the NICU, I was a little annoyed that I couldn’t walk on my own. I was not excited to spend the next few weeks being basically unable to do anything for myself.
“She’s just been fed, and is falling asleep.” The NICU nurse said, as she guided us over to the incubator. “You can’t hold her yet, she’s having some mild blood pressure problems. Nothing to worry about.” She gave me a comforting smile, seeing the look on my face. “But she has to stay hooked up to everything for a couple of days yet. You’re welcome to touch her though.”
Bruce helped me onto the stool next to the incubator, and I finally got a look at my baby. She was so small, and so vulnerable. I reached my hand inside, nearly bursting into tears as her tiny fingers wrapped around my thumb. It didn’t matter if she did it unconsciously, the fact that I could touch her was all that I cared about.
I’d been through so much to get here, and I was finally seeing that it was all worth it. I wiped my tears from my eyes, looking up at Bruce.
“She’s beautiful.” I whispered.
He nodded, leaning down to kiss the top of my head. “Just like you.”
