“Wow, Lisa!” Mike grinned. “You are smokin’ hot!”
“Thanks, Mike,” Lisa mumbled, as the orange turtle made her a sandwich behind the bar. “That’s what I was going for.” She smoothed down her skirt and fiddled with the silver, turtle-shaped pendant that hung around her neck. Her aunt had given it to her once, but she’d never worn it much.
“Oh?” Mike asked. “And who are we trying to impress today?” Lisa blushed and looked away. How did Mike know these things?
“Nobody,” she smiled as he passed the wrapped sandwich to her.
“Really?” Mike chuckled. He passed a second, much larger sandwich across the counter. “Well would you mind taking Mr. Nobody his lunch? I think he’s shelving books in the self-help section this morning.”
Lisa could feel the heat rising in her cheeks and she made a face at Mike. She took the sandwich and hurried away to the elevator to find Leonardo. Was it really that obvious that she liked him? She looked down at her blue top and green skirt... yeah, it was obvious. Lisa snorted loudly before the doors opened onto the second floor. It wasn’t her fault that she had to be so obvious... she’d been trying for weeks to get Leonardo’s attention. She wasn’t sure what she’d do if he did flirt with her, but she couldn’t stop wanting his attention.
She saw the blue turtle on the other side of the store and she looked around to see if anyone was nearby; they were alone. She took his sandwich and hurled it at him as hard as he could. At the last moment, he whirled around and caught it easily.
“Nice try,” he said, as she approached him, “but the elevator dinged as you got off so I knew someone was there.” They walked to the back and sat down on a small couch to eat.
“But how did you know it was me?” she asked.
Leo shrugged. “Who else would try to hit me with a sandwich? Besides,” he said, as he took her sandwich from her hands and replaced it with his, “you threw the wrong one. Yours is on rye.”
Lisa giggled and took a bite of her sandwich. The couch was small and Leo’s elbow brushed against hers as he sagged back into the upholstery. She crossed her legs and looked at him out of the corner of her eye; his open shirt had slid to one side and she could see the circular scar in his plastron where Bubba had wedged the ice pick. Without thinking, she reached over and fingered the mark gently. For the first time, fear wasn’t the first thing to pop into her head when she thought of the other mutant; all she could think about now was Leonardo, her hero. What would it be like to kiss him? Lisa looked up to his lips and was surprised to see him looking at her. She pulled her hand quickly away, feeling the heat rising in her cheeks. When had she started stroking her fingertips over his plastron like that?
Her eyes fell on a poster that some idiot had stuck to a shelf and she jumped up to pull it down. Loser musicians were always trying to put posters on the shelves and walls in the music section. Artists did the same thing in the art section. Charlie thought it made the store look cheap and Lisa thoroughly agreed.
Leonardo sat up a bit and watched her tear the poster down. What had just happened? Hd he made her uncomfortable by sitting too close? Did his scar frighten her? It had been so strange, having her reach out and touch him like that, but he’d liked it. What would it feel like to have her sit in his lap and stroke his plastron? She sat down next to him again and he shook the thoughts from his head.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Um, yeah,” she winced. “Sorry... my mind wandered.”
“That’s okay,” Leo said. “I don’t mind you touching me if you’re curious about our shells. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, I know this is still new for you.”
Lisa shook her head. “It shouldn’t still be new. We’ve been friends for months now... nearly a year. I just...” her voice trailed away. “I guess maybe I’m a little more curious about you lately.” There. That had to be obvious. She looked back to Leonardo’s face and she could tell that he didn’t get it at all.
“Yeah?” he chuckled. “How come?” He took a bite out of his sandwich, completely oblivious to the reason for her interest.
“I dunno,” she shrugged. “I guess we’ve just been spending more and more time together, you and I, and I want to know more about you.” The poster slipped from her grasp and she leaned down to pick it up. Leonardo looked at his sandwich, forcing his eyes away from the view down her shirt. What would she say if he asked her out? No, he couldn’t do that. It might make her uncomfortable. He looked at the poster.
“I know that place,” he said. “They have a glass roof. We used to go there and look down at the bands.”
“I used to go dancing there,” Lisa sighed. “I don’t like being in big crowds like that now, though.” She leaned back and ate some of her sandwich, even though she wasn’t hungry anymore. She’d just given Leo a free look down her shirt and he wasn’t interested. Maybe he just wasn’t into her.
“I could take you up to the roof if you’d like,” Leo said.
Lisa brightened up a little. “Really? That’d be nice, actually. I haven’t been out anywhere since... well, I haven’t been out anywhere in a long time. Can we go tomorrow? Y’know, since it’s Saturday and all?”
*****
“So you asked her out?” Mike grinned, as he and Leo walked home through the sewers after work.
“No,” Leo said, quickly. “We’re just going to see the band.”
“Oh really?” Mike said. “Can I come?”
Leo froze. He definitely didn’t want Mike there. Did that mean this was a date? Did Lisa think it was a date? He looked at Mike in a panic.
“Oh calm down, Leo,” Mike sighed. “Look, if she’s had a shower and changed her clothes between work and the time you go and get her, it’s a date. If she hasn’t, then she’s not thinking along those lines.”
