It has now begun
The force fed sun beneath
Will conquer all before
And bring me to my victory
Bring Me Victory, My Dying Bride
“So, I guess I should tell you that I really hate hiking.” I laughed a little, following Jack’s steps.
“Honestly, me too.” He stepped up a small boulder, turning to help me. “It could be worse though. One or both of us could be really unfit.”
“Okay, I see how that would be worse.” I readjusted my pack, and we continued on.
The sun was starting to get low, and I looked out at the horizon. It was beautiful, but it was hard to appreciate it when I was in the middle of running for my life.
“We’ll stop here for the night.” He dropped his pack, continuing when he saw the look on my face. “She won’t walk during the night. Even with a torch, it’s too dangerous.”
I nodded, still feeling hesitant about stopping when Talia could be right on our heels. But I had to trust that he knew what he was talking about.
“So this place we’re going. What do you know about it?” I asked, pulling a muesli bar out of my pack. I wasn’t really hungry, but I figured I should eat something.
“Bane said that it was an old temple that used to be a base for the League of Shadows, but they abandoned it.” He took a sip of water, and looked out at the mountains around us. “He says it’s still well stocked, but I doubt we’ll be there very long if Talia is already on her way.”
“You’re not worried about what will happen when she finds us?”
He shook his head. “The way I see it, I’m going to die eventually. This job probably shortens my life a lot, so either I go here, or I go somewhere else. There’s no point worrying about when it might happen.”
“Sure, but I doubt you want to die here.”
“Obviously I’d rather not.” He laughed. “But I’m not going to hide from it.”
“I would have, even just a few months ago.” I sighed.
He reached out, squeezing my hand gently. “For someone who basically had their life turned upside down around two months ago, you’re doing fine.”
“That’s… oddly reassuring, thanks.”
It was starting to get colder, but Jack insisted on putting up the tent himself. I was exhausted, but it still took me a while to fall asleep.
He didn’t often admit it to himself, but he was actually scared. Not for himself, but he was scared of what might happen to her before he got there. If he lost her now, after all this, it would tear him apart.
The waiting was the worst part. Stuck on a plane, nowhere to go and not much to do but think, his mind was running at a hundred miles an hour. It was almost going too fast, and he couldn’t plan. Not that there was really anything to plan anyway, he knew the only way to end this was to fight Talia.
He knew how she fought, how she would use her opponent’s strength against them. He knew all her moves, but he still wasn’t entirely sure he would win. Because he wasn’t just fighting for fun or for work. He was fighting for something more important to him, and he knew that if he failed, he would lose everything.
I could see what looked like a temple in the distance, but I didn’t want to have too much hope. It felt like we’d been hiking for a week, even though it had only been two days, and my legs were threatening to give out.
“There it is.” Jack pointed at the shape I’d been looking at. “Half an hour, and we’ll be there. Do you want to take a break?”
I shook my head. “No, let’s just get there.”
We continued on in a comfortable silence, the only sounds being our footsteps and our breathing. It was oddly calming, the silence, and I found myself barely even worrying about Talia and whatever she was planning.
The last part of the walk was tough, and by the time we made it to the temple, I was about ready to collapse. I sat down on the stone, pulling my hair out of its bun and watching as Jack walked around, checking to make sure it was safe.
“So, why does Talia hate Bane so much?” I lay back, using my pack as a pillow.
He stayed silent for a moment, and I wondered if I’d maybe asked a question I shouldn’t have. Then he sat down beside me and started to speak.
“I really don’t know that much more than you.” He sat down beside me. “He doesn’t really talk about it. From what I’ve picked up, they loved each other. But something happened, or he did something, and her father disowned her. She’s never gotten over it, and has been regularly tormenting him ever since.”
“I can’t even imagine actually holding a grudge, let alone tormenting someone for something.” I rolled onto my side to look at him. “Thanks for looking out for me the past couple of weeks.”
He nodded, giving me a small smile. “You made it pretty easy. So many people I’ve protected don’t seem to understand they’re in danger, and they refuse to listen.”
“I guess people would rather stay in denial.” I sighed, watching him. “But still. You’ve been a good friend and I don’t think I would have gotten this far without you.”
“You should get some sleep. I don’t know when everything will go down, and you’ll need your energy.”
“Are you really not worried about yourself?” I asked, sitting up to get my mat and sleeping bag out.
He shook his head. “Not really, no. I’m more concerned about you making it out with only minor injuries, if any at all.”
I slid into the sleeping bag, falling asleep quickly.
He marched up the mountain, a little thankful that he’d told Jack to bring her to a place he knew well. He couldn’t afford to stop for the night, because he had no idea where Talia was, and when she would get to Alex.
As he walked, his thoughts were torn between the two women. He knew he’d made mistakes with Talia, but what had eventually broken them apart was not his fault. She’d made the decision, and she couldn’t handle the consequences.
He was determined not to make the same mistakes with Alex, and he was definitely not going to let her down. It was strange to him, how important his promises seemed to be now. She’d changed a lot of things in his life, and he could even feel himself changing inside.
Kicking a rock, he watched as it tumbled down the mountain. He needed to keep his thoughts in check. A distraction while he was hiking could be fatal, and he didn’t plan on leaving Alex to her fate with Talia.
He could hear his men talking further back, but he ignored them. There was nothing any of them could say that would talk him out of this.
I woke up to Jack quietly shaking me. In the light of the full moon I could see him pressing his finger to his lips. He gestured for me to get up and follow him. I didn’t know what time it is, but I could see that the moon was getting low, which meant it was close to dawn.
As I crept across the stone behind him, I realised I could hear footsteps outside. They were so faint that if I hadn’t been paying attention, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. I couldn’t tell if they were close but quiet or far away, all I knew was that they were coming.
He led me towards a side room, but suddenly shapes came out of the shadows and grabbed us, pulling me in one direction and him in another.
“Jack!” I shouted, as he fought off his attacker.
Then a second person joined in, and they slammed his head into the wall, knocking him out. They were dragging him away when I felt the arm around me loosen slightly. I took my chance, elbowing my attacker in the chest. They didn’t even flinch, just hauled me back into the main area.
I was thrown to the ground, my hands scraping on the stone as I caught myself. Sitting up, I watched as the woman I recognised from the photos in Bane’s room crouched down in front of me.
She took hold of my face, looking me over. “So you’re the one he’s replaced me with. Not as impressive as I thought you would be. I expected you to fight more.”
“I’m not going to fight you.” I said quietly.
I could hear shouting from the direction they’d taken Jack, and I tried not to flinch or show that I was scared for him.
“Please don’t hurt him.”
“Oh dear, you’re the sensitive sort, aren’t you?” She laughed. “He’s not why I’m here, so I don’t plan on hurting him if he behaves.”
I wrapped my arms around myself, watching as she began to pace around the room. She was clearly thinking about something, and as long as she was doing that, I was safe, so I was hardly going to interrupt her.
“Drug her.” She said finally.
Before I could react, I was grabbed and a needle was jabbed into my shoulder. Whatever they’d drugged me with was quick acting, and it only took a minute before I was completely out.
