When you care about someone, you can’t just turn that off because you learn they betrayed you. Paula Stokes, Liars, Inc.
“Ooh, I love this one!” I dragged Charlotte over to a cute baby onesie with dinosaurs on it. “I have to get it too.”
“Put it on the pile.” She laughed, holding out her hands which were already pretty loaded with clothes.
I handed it to her then looked at the pile, biting my lip. I wanted to keep shopping, but I knew that babies grow very fast and it would just be a waste. Plus I was starting to get tired.
She saw the look on my face and nodded. “Go sit in the car. I’ll sort all this out.”
I did as I was told, slowly walking out to the car with the keys. As I opened the door, I felt something press against my back. My blood ran cold, and I froze, recognising it as the barrel of a gun. Then a voice behind me shook me to my core.
“Give me your phone, Eve.”
I hoped I’d heard wrong, but there was no mistaking that voice. I knew it too well.
“Harvey, please. Don’t do this.” I reached into my pocket, pressing the lock button on my phone four times. It buzzed, and I hoped that meant it was alerting Bruce.
I handed it over, flinching as he smashed it on the ground. He pulled me over to a car, forcing me to get in the back seat. I didn’t want to antagonise him, but I was panicking and scared for my baby.
If he attacked me, there was nothing I would be able to do to stop him. I was vulnerable, and I needed to do everything I could to keep my baby safe.
He drove to a rundown apartment building, parking the car in the alley next to it. Opening the back door he gestured with the gun for me to get out. I climbed out, not fighting as he forced me inside the bottom floor apartment.
He walked me into a bedroom, and I sat down, finally taking a look at him for the first time since I’d sat with him at the hospital. Half his face was covered in burn scars, and there was a new anger in his eyes.
I opened my mouth to say something, but he left the room, slamming the door and locking it. Panicking and in tears, all I could think about is whether Bruce got the alert, and hoping that he would find me.
I pressed my hands to my belly, thankful when I felt the baby move. There was nothing more I could do except wait for either Harvey to come back or Bruce to rescue me.
“We’re going to be okay.” I said quietly. “Your dad is going to save us, I promise.”
I had nothing really to focus on, so I just imagined Bruce talking me through this. I could calm down, and I absolutely could get through this, but I just needed to stay calm.
Closing my eyes, I thought about anything else. I thought about England, about my parents, anything to get my mind off the situation. I softly began to sing, hoping that if I couldn’t get myself calm, at least I could get the baby calm. But it wasn’t easy to sing when I was still crying, and eventually I gave up.
“I’m sorry, baby.” I whispered. “I’m scared too, but I know we’re going to get out of this.”
Feeling a touch calmer, I lay down, just trying to get some sleep. It took a long time, but eventually I managed to drift off.
I woke up in a little more pain than usual, likely from the uncomfortable mattress I’d been forced to sleep on. Opening my eyes, I flinched in panic when I saw Harvey sitting across the room from me.
He had one hand on a gun in his lap, and the other was flipping a coin back and forth over his fingers. I recognised that coin, because I’d given it to him. It was so rare to find a double-headed coin, and he’d been so excited when I gave it over. I thought he’d gotten rid of it when we broke up, but I guess not. As I watched the coin move back and forth, I noticed that one side was marked now, kind of scratched up.
“Harvey, why are you doing this?” I sat up, trying to stay calm.
“Because it should have been me.” He replied quietly. He slid his chair closer to me, taking hold of my face. “It should have been me!”
I felt his fingers digging into my cheeks, and I began to silently cry. “I don’t understand.”
“I gave you everything. It should have been me you loved. And that,” He tapped the gun against my belly. “Should have been my baby.”
“But you dumped me.” I replied, against my better judgement.
It was the wrong choice, because he suddenly hit me with his gun. My head swam as I tried to stay conscious, and I pressed my hand to my cheek. Pulling it away, I saw blood on my skin.
“What do you want from me?” I cried, trying to ignore the throbbing pain that seemed to be all over my head.
“Bruce Wayne took you from me, and I want him to pay.”
I shuffled back on the bed, wrapping my arms around my belly protectively. “Please, don’t hurt me.”
He shot the wall next to me, the loud bang making my ears ring. I was in full panic now, and could barely breathe.
“We could have been happy, you and I.” He put the gun away and stood up. “We still could. Just tell me that you love me.”
I didn’t reply, just placed my hands over my ears in a desperate attempt to stop the ringing. He sighed, leaving the room and locking the door behind me.
I groaned in mild pain as a cramp ripped through my belly. It felt like a wave that swept down from the top to the bottom, and I had a really bad feeling.
“No… please no.” I whimpered, curling up into a ball as best I could.
After a few moments, the pain went away. But I knew that wasn’t the end of it. Somehow, inside me, I could tell this wasn’t false labour. Which made the panic worse, because I needed a hospital, and I doubted that Harvey would let me go.
There was a few minutes of calm, and then the pain was back. It didn’t matter if I was standing, lying down, or seated, nothing seemed to stop it.
“Please, Harvey.” I cried out, banging my fists against the door. “I need a hospital. My baby…”
I trailed off as the sound of shouting hit my ears. There was another loud bang, and a bullet came flying through the door, barely missing my head. I sank to the floor, shuffling backwards to safety.
The shouting was getting closer, and I was scared that it was another person coming to hurt me. I looked down, making sure that everything seemed okay. That’s when I saw blood. There wasn’t a lot, but it was enough that I slipped straight into a panic attack.
I started to hyperventilate, getting a little dizzy. The door suddenly opened, and a man came running in. He was wearing a GCPD uniform, and I probably would have breathed a sigh of relief if I could have.
“I’ve got her! I need the medics in here!” He crouched down beside me, taking my hand. “You’re safe now, Eve. We’re going to get you out of here.”
“My… baby…” I wheezed. My breathing was slowing down as relief took over.
He nodded. “The medics will be here in a second.”
Another man and a woman came rushing in, one of them carrying a medical kit as they pulled a stretcher bed along with them. The woman crouched down in front of me, taking my wrist to check my pulse.
“Hi, Eve. I’m Emily, I’m going to be looking after you. How far along are you?” She asked, giving me a comforting look.
“Nearly 33 weeks.” I took a deep, shaky breath. “I’m bleeding, and I think I’ve had a couple of contractions.”
She nodded. “Alright. We’re going to get you to the hospital. I know you’re feeling scared right now, but just keep breathing deep for me.”
They helped me onto the stretcher bed, and wheeled me out to the ambulance. As the pushed me inside, I looked up and happened to see a black shape disappearing into the darkness. That one sight was enough to make me feel a little better. Bruce had kept his promise, and I knew he would find me at the hospital.
Then the pain started again, and I cried out, reaching for Emily’s hand. She squeezed it gently, then looked back at her partner.
“Lights and sirens. Looks like she’s starting to haemorrhage.” She fussed around, returning to me to make sure I was still awake.
