“This is April O’Neal reporting live from the DCS building, where just hours ago a gang of hooded men stole two barrels of the chemical AC4L.” Don sat up and leaned forward. This was bad.
“DCS stands for Dangerous Chemical Storage,” he said quickly to the others.
“In the process” April continued “The thieves severely wounded six guards, all of whom have been hospitalized. I have the DCS vice-president, George Franklin, here with me for an exclusive interview.” April turned to a greying middle-aged man in a dark suit. “Mr Franklin, what exactly is AC4L?” The man looked uncomfortable.
“It’s a very rare, and therefore expensive chemical used in everything from hairspray to plastic toys,” he said, shifting his weight and not meeting April’s eyes. “It’s harmless, really.”
April didn’t skip a beat. “If it’s harmless, why is it being stored in your facility?” She stuck the microphone under his nose.
“W-well... uh... if its combined with certain other chemicals it can make some... uh... unpleasant substances...”
“Like mutagen” Don groaned. What was Shredder up to now? The other turtles’ mouths dropped open and they starred at Don.
“Think Shredder’s going to make some more Be-bop and Rocksteadies?” Mikey asked, sounding very worried.
“Let’s hope not, Mikey,” Leo said, fingering the four-inch scar on his thigh that he’d gotten from Rocksteady’s rhino tusk. He’d killed the bastard, but it had been close... too close. Rocksteady was really pissed that day - Don had killed Be-bop the night before when he split the warthog’s skull open with his bow - and Rocksteady had been out for revenge.
As soon as April’s news segment ended, Raphael pulled his Turtle Comm out of his belt and called her. Leo went to tell Master Splinter about the theft. Splinter spent a lot of time in his room reading and meditating. “Appropriate pass-times for an old man,” he’d often tell his boys.
“Hey guys! Did you watch me?” April called into her Comm when she answered.
“Yeah, babe! You were great!” Raph said. “Listen April... you should maybe back off that story...”
“What?!” April had never backed away from anything in her life. “Why?”
“Donnie says that that AC - whatever stuff can be used to make mutagen, and those hooded guys were obviously the Foot. We’re gonna go check the place out and see if we can find clues.”
“But why do I have to abandon this story?” April asked, confused.
Raphael sighed. April was too stubborn for her own good. “Because,” he said patiently, “Shredder hates your guts and we don’t want you to piss him off even more because he might kidnap you and mutate you with a chipmunk or something.”
“Oh.” She hadn’t thought of that. The idea of becoming a mutant frightened her a bit - not that she ever told the turtles. She knew how hard it was for them and Splinter. They couldn’t even go out in the sun without their big trench coats and fedoras in case somebody saw them. They led such secluded lonely lives... she could never do what they did... “Well...ok, Raphael,” she said. “It’s not really a big story anyway... I’ll just file it along with the rest of my evidence.”
Raphael laughed. “Sounds good, babe.” April had been preparing for a huge news expose on Shredder and the Foot for years.
“The day he makes his big move, so will I!” she said every time she got some new information to add to it.
“Oh, Leo’s back. We’re gonna head out. See you tomorrow, April!”
“Smell ya later” Mikey shouted before Raph shut his Comm off.
“You and Splinter gonna be ok while we’re gone, Mikey?” Don asked.
“Yeah, we’ll be cool.” said Mike. “Especially since I have these.” He lifted up his pillow to show them a box full of ninja stars. “They’ll do my walking for me if someone turns up.”
“Atta boy, Mikey” Leo said proudly, as the other three turtles left the lair.
