A storm of ebony hair.
A hail of wickedness.
Handsome as a God.
Wild and shameless.
The Prize of Beauty, My Dying Bride
“Yes, I’ll make sure to get the prawn crackers, Mum.” I laughed, as I pulled up in front of the Chinese takeaway shop.
“And the spring rolls!” I heard Jack shout down the line.
“And the spring rolls.” I hung up, getting out of the car.
We’d already ordered so all I needed to do was pick it up and head home. Now that we knew Talia was in Central City, I was allowed a little more freedom. So I was on my own, picking up the food and heading straight home. I was gone a total of about forty minutes.
I parked the car out front of the house, the smell of the food making me hungry. It was a cool night, and I dashed up to the door, hesitating when I saw that it was broken open.
Putting the bag of food down on the ground, I crept inside, only to be grabbed by the hair and thrown to the floor. I looked up, finding Mum tied to a chair and Jack unconscious on the ground.
“It’s been a bit of a ride, having you back in my life, Alice.”
I felt my whole body tense up, and I looked over at Mum, who mouthed stay calm at me. Sitting back, I turned towards the voice, already knowing who it was.
“Please don’t do this, Mick.” I said, trying to keep calm. Shuffling backwards, I pressed two fingers to Jack’s neck, feeling for his pulse.
“Don’t try your voice trick on me.” He replied, crouching in front of me. “You know it doesn’t work.”
I held back a laugh. The truth was, it did work on him, but only when I was more subtle about it. I couldn’t make him fall asleep or make him do anything drastic, at least not without a lot of effort, but it was easy enough to convince him of smaller things. I just had to wait until I was calmer, and had an opportunity.
“I’m not. You know I wouldn’t try it.” I gently took hold of Jack’s hand, behind my back, hoping he would stay still when he came to.
“Good.” He grabbed my face, making sure I was looking at him. “I can’t have you running off before Talia gets here.”
“You have no idea what’s going on here.” I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, fear nearly taking over. “And you really don’t want to get involved.”
I felt Jack gently squeeze my hand, and I almost breathed a sigh of relief.
“Shh…” He pressed his finger to my lips. “A million dollars convinced me not to ask questions. I’m going to check out the security system that you have here. If you try to run, I will kill both of them.”
I nodded, watching him leave. Then I turned to Jack, who carefully sat up.
“Are you alright?” I asked, wiping a small amount of blood off his face.
“Yeah, I’ve been hurt worse.” He rubbed his head. “He caught me by surprise.”
“I’ll get you some ice.” Standing up, I looked over at Mum. “What about you, Mum?”
She nodded with a sigh. “I’m fine. But next time you bring a man home, you have to let me vet him. I’ve been tied up too many times in my life to deal with your men doing it too.”
I untied her, then grabbed an ice pack, carrying it to Jack. “I’m sorry for all this. I know how to deal with him, but I’ll need to get him alone.”
“She left the city.” Barsad told him, cautiously. “We lost her.”
“You did what?” Bane shouted.
“We checked all the airports, she’s not on a plane. Where would she go?”
“She’s going after Alex. We need to get back to Metropolis. Find me a plane, now.”
The smaller man hesitated. “Are you sure?”
Bane felt anger wash over him, and he clenched his hands into fists. “Don’t question me. Go.”
He opened his laptop, just wanting reassurance that she was alright. When he saw her mother tied to a chair, he slammed it shut and ran out the door. He didn’t know who had done that, but he knew it wouldn’t be long before Talia got there. And he needed to get there first.
I watched as Mick walked past us, heading towards the stairs. Standing up, I turned to Mum and Jack.
“I’ll deal with this.” I said, following Mick up to my bedroom.
As I stepped inside, he grabbed me and threw me up against the wall.
“Were you missing me?” He asked, sliding his arm around my waist. “Or are you coming to try and talk your way out of this?”
“I just want you to listen, that’s all.” I tried not to flinch at his touch. “If you still want to turn me over to her, then fine, but just listen.”
“Last time I listened to you, I ended up in prison. Why would I make that mistake again?”
I hesitated, trying to ignore my pride. “Please, Mick. She’s going to kill me. If there’s any part of you that still cares about me, please just listen.”
He began to laugh, then he suddenly slapped me. “God, you really are pathetic.”
I rubbed my cheek, sighing. I was going to have to pull out the big guns if I wanted to get out of this. Before he could react, I grabbed him by his shirt, pulling him close and kissing him.
While he was still shocked, I placed my hands on either side of his face and focused hard. “Sleep.”
I could feel his mind fighting me, but he wasn’t as strong as he pretended to be, and he collapsed. There was a thump as his body hit the floor, but I ignored it, walking to the door.
Running downstairs, I didn’t stop to explain, just grabbed the rope and ran back upstairs to tie him up. I pulled his phone out of his pocket, finding what looked like a message from Talia, asking for the address. I sent her a random address I knew on the other side of the city to buy us some time, hoping that she wasn’t tracking the phone.
Returning to the kitchen to get myself some water, I found two confused faces looking at me.
“He’s going to be pissed when he wakes up, but he’s tied up and unconscious.” I rinsed my mouth out, then leaned my hands on the bench.
“We need to get out of here.” Jack said quietly. “The boss told me to take you to a safe place, but we have to fly out as soon as possible.”
I hesitated, looking over at Mum, who nodded.
“I’ll deal with him.” She said, pointing upstairs. “You need to go.”
“But what if she comes here?” I walked over to her. “She could kill you.”
She shook her head. “I’ll deal with him, and then I’ll get out. I’ve been taking care of myself since before you were a twinkle in your father’s eye, I’ll be fine.”
He walked down the steps, out of the plane. It was colder in Metropolis, and he hated it there. But he wasn’t in the city for himself, he was focused on her now.
As he got in the car, his phone vibrated with a message. When he saw it was from Jack, he opened it straight away.
Attacked by Alex’s ex. Leaving for Nepal.
He hesitated for a moment, then instructed Rob to drive past Julia’s house. He needed to know what was going on, and then he could work out what to do next.
“I’m coming to get you, Alex.” He said to himself.
I leaned my head against the window of the plane, trying to get some sleep. It was going to be a long flight, even on the private plane. I’d been meaning to ask how they afforded trips on one, but I figured they probably got paid good money for what they did.
As much as I hated to admit it, I was beginning to have doubts. I’d been ripped from my home, and now I was travelling halfway around the world. I was in danger because of a man that I didn’t know that well.
“It’ll be easier to sleep if you stop thinking about it.” Jack said quietly, leaning the seat back and closing his eyes.
I slid the window shade down. “I’m not used to this life, chasing sleep where I can and trying to survive.”
“It gets easier.” He slid his phone out of his pocket. “Here, you can call him if you want. It’s safe enough now.”
I took it from him, walking to the back of the plane. I called the only number on it, sitting down as I waited for an answer.
“Jack? What’s going on?” Came Bane’s voice, and I nearly burst into tears.
“It’s me.” I spoke softly, trying to stay calm.
“Alex? It’s good to hear your voice.” He breathed. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t account for your ex.”
“I thought he was still in prison.” I laughed a little. “Do you think she’ll follow me?”
He was silent for a moment, and I knew the answer before he said anything. “Yes. I know you’re scared, but I need you to trust me.”
“I do.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “So talk to me.”
“There’s a good chance she’s already left Metropolis to follow you. Which means she’ll get to where you’re going before I do.”
“What do I do?” I whispered, trying to stay calm.
“You stay calm, listen to what she says, and don’t provoke her. I…” He hesitated for a moment. “I can’t guarantee that she won’t hurt you, but she won’t kill you. She’ll want me there for whatever she’s planning. I’m so sorry. I’m already on my way, and I’m going to get you out of this.”
“I know you are. Just… don’t take too long, okay?”
“I won’t. I’ll see you soon, I promise.”
We hung up, but I didn’t move straight away. I took a few deep breaths. The doubts had disappeared as soon as I heard his voice again. And I knew I could take anything Talia threw at me, because he was going to find me.
Walking back to Jack, I placed the phone down in front of him. He looked asleep, so I quietly sat down to try and sleep.
“Feel better?” He asked.
“Much better, thank you.” I pushed the chair back and curled up.
My head was clearer now, and it was a lot easier to drift off. Even with all the thoughts in my mind, I guess I needed sleep more than I thought, because I was asleep within minutes.
