The moment our lips met, I knew with pure and piercing certainty that I would have waited for him forever. Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone
“Are you going to help me put your clothes away?” Bruce laughed, unzipping my luggage.
“I would,” I looked up at him from my seat on the bed, my hands resting on my now large baby bump. “But I sat down, and there’s no way I’m getting back up for at least ten minutes. If you pass me a bunch of coat-hangers I’ll hang the clothes up and pass them to you.”
He handed some over, and I got to work. We’d finally gotten around to moving all my stuff over, but unfortunately we’d left it so late that I was too far along to be much help.
“I’m sorry that I’m not very helpful right now.” I said quietly, feeling a little guilty.
He shook his head, kneeling down in front of me, and softly resting his hands on my belly. “You don’t need to apologise, Eve. You’re two months from giving birth, and you have basically a whole baby inside you now.”
“I feel like… ow!” I flinched as the baby gave me a sharp kick to the ribs.
“Are you alright?”
I nodded, gently pressing my hand where I’d been kicked, trying to coax the baby to move. “Yeah, the baby is kicking even more now. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a baby related to you would kick so hard.”
He sat on the bed beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist. “Once we get past the opening of your charity tomorrow, there’s nothing you have to do until the baby is born.”
“I’m not excited for the whole giving birth part, but I can’t wait to not be pregnant anymore.” I laughed a little.
“I’ll handle the rest of this if you’re sore.” He pressed a kiss to my cheek.
“Thank you.” I turned to kiss him properly. “I am definitely going to be bruised and battered by the time all this is over.”
He stood up, carrying my luggage to the closet. As he put my clothes away, I shuffled back on the bed and turned on the news. There was a story about the mayor starting an athletics carnival for underprivileged kids, which was nice to see.
It was the next story that caught my eye, and I felt sick to my stomach.
“There was a devastating explosion at Arkham Asylum this morning. Police are still unsure how it occurred and how many people have died, but there are over a hundred patients and staff still missing, including former district attorney Harvey Dent. Rescue operations are going ahead, and we will keep you posted as information comes in.”
I wanted to call out to Bruce, but all I could manage was a choking sound. Thankfully he’d heard the news and was somehow already at my side. He held me close as I burst into tears, just letting me work through it.
“I thought he would get better there, and I could see him again.” I said through the tears. “Now he might be dead, and I feel like I deserted him.”
“I know you’re scared for him, but we don’t know that he’s dead yet.” He gently rubbed my back, comforting me. “Just focus on that. I know it’s not easy to calm down, but you need to try, just to make sure you and the baby stay safe.”
I nodded, taking a few deep breaths. I could feel the baby moving around a bit, and I was concerned that I’d hurt it.
“There we go. Alright, I’ll go out tonight and see what’s happening, but I want you to stay here and rest up for tomorrow.”
“I need a nap.” I wiped my eyes. “Wake me before you go?”
“I want to thank you all for being here today.” I stood in the entrance hall of the home, looking out at the press. “This home will be a welcoming place for girls and young women running from violence, abuse or who have nowhere else to go. I was lucky enough to be born into a family with money, where I was wanted. But I know that not everyone has that, and I want to do what I can to make life a little easier for them.”
I took a breath, trying to hold back tears. “This is what my mum wanted for this city, and I am so glad that I can make at least a little bit of a difference. It’s been a long path to opening this home, and I’m so happy to finally see it opening. I can’t take you on the tour myself, for obvious reasons, so I’ll hand you over to the director, Alice. I’ll be here for the next hour to answer questions, but if you need more time, we can schedule an interview later on.”
Allowing Alice to take over, I returned to my seat beside Bruce. He wrapped his arm around me gently, then handed me my drink bottle.
I watched as Alice took most of the journalists on the tour. The rest brought their chairs over to me, so they could ask questions.
“Do you already have some girls and women lined up to move in?”
I nodded. “We have 36 already registered to move in tomorrow. We can accommodate a hundred, so there is plenty more space.”
The questions continued for a while, but I’d given most of the information over the past few days, so there wasn’t a huge amount to ask. Before I could say I was done, the questions turned in an inevitable direction, but still one that was a little annoying.
“Do you think your pregnancy influenced your decision to start this charity, and will you have enough time to pay attention to it once your baby is born?”
Bruce’s grip on my waist suddenly tightened, but I gently rested my hand on his leg to calm him.
“This is something that I’ve wanted to do since I made my mind to come back to Gotham. My pregnancy had no influence on it whatsoever. As for the second half of your question, this home is important to me, and I will continue to give it as much attention as I possibly can.” I changed how I was sitting, feeling a little uncomfortable. “I hired a director because I recognise that I won’t be able to give this my entire attention anymore, but that doesn’t mean I’m not committed.”
I could feel myself getting tired, and gave Bruce a look. He stood up, resting his hand on my shoulder.
“That’s enough for the day. If there are any more questions, you can either direct them to the Alice or contact Eve through the email you’ve been given.” He told them, before helping me up.
I said my goodbyes, then allowed Bruce to lead me out to the car. I’d warned Alice that I would probably have to leave, and I knew she could handle it, but I still felt anxious and a little guilty about leaving her to deal with everyone.
I sat down, readjusting the seatbelt around me. “I wish I could have stayed longer.”
“You’re exhausted.” Bruce said, squeezing my hand. “You did well even making it through an hour and a half. We’ll go home now, then you can rest.”
I rested my hand on my bump, feeling the baby gently kick against it. “I’m not sure this one will let me nap right now.”
“Then we’ll just watch a movie, eat some popcorn, and do nothing. The important thing is that you don’t have to do anything. You can just stop and relax.”
I watched the city go by, not even really thinking, just daydreaming a little. I wondered if the baby would have dark hair like Bruce, or blonde like mine. Would it grow up to be an athlete, a scientist? There were so many different ways life could go for our child, and it was scary to think about all the different options.
“Eve, we’re home.” Bruce said.
I blinked, pulling myself out of my reverie and noticing that he was on my side of the car, reaching in through the open door. I took his hand, climbing out. “Oh, I’m sorry, I was off in my own little world for a bit.”
He shook his head, gently closing the door. “It’s fine. You’ve been doing it quite a bit recently, but one of the books you made me read said it’s normal during pregnancy, so I wasn’t worried.”
“I guess all of this is probably weird to see from the outside.” I laughed, walking alongside him into the manor.
“Unless it’s serious pain or bleeding, I’ve just started assuming it’s a normal symptom now.” He helped me up to the bedroom.
I sat down on the bed, groaning as I put my feet up. There wasn’t much relief from the aching feet and legs, but I was focusing on the fact that we weren’t far from the end.
“Do you realise what milestone we hit today?” I looked through my calendar.
“What milestone did we hit?” He unbuckled my shoes, gently pulling them off.
I reached out, taking his hand. “32 weeks! Only 8 weeks left to go.”
“Two months. Does that still feel like a long time for you?”
“While I’m having to get around three hours of sleep at a time, and I’m aching, thirsty and need to go to the toilet all the time? A week feels like a long time right now.” I gave him a small smile. “Two months still feels like an eternity.”
He sat beside me, leaning over to talk to the baby. “Did you hear that? You’re taking up a lot of space in there, and making your mum very uncomfortable.”
I felt that baby kick a little, and I rolled my eyes. Taking Bruce’s hand, I placed it where I’d felt it. There was another kick, slightly harder this time, and his face lit up. It made him so happy to see the baby react to him, which made me happy too.
“Hi there.” He said quietly. “It’s your dad here.”
“Do you two want a room to bond in?” I laughed, as the baby kept moving around.
He sat up, pressing a kiss to my cheek. “Just making sure the baby knows my voice.”
“At this rate, our baby is going to know your voice better than mine.” I leaned over to kiss him. “I love you. And I don’t think you need to worry, the baby knows what you sound like."
