The real lover is the man who can thrill you by kissing your forehead or smiling into your eyes or just staring into space. Marilyn Monroe.
I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Bruce as he got dressed.
“This plan of yours, is it going to involve cutting me out?” I asked. “Because I want to be involved.”
He shook his head, crouching down in front of me. “There’s no way I would cut you out now, Eve. The only way to end this is to take Falcone’s power away from him. You are clearly better at the computer work than me, so I want you to go searching for any evidence of wrongdoing that you can.”
“Did you just say I’m better than you?” I laughed.
“You know you are.” He took my hand, pressing a kiss to it. “Once we have enough to give to the GCPD, I’ll go get him.”
“I guess I should go get started. There’s probably a lot to get through.” I stood up, fixing my shorts. “Are you coming?”
He nodded, and we headed downstairs. As I waited for him to scan his hand to unlock the entrance to the cave, I thought of something.
“Are you going to add me to your fancy scanner? Or will I have to wait patiently for you to let me in every time?”
“As soon as we deal with this, I’ll add your biometrics.” He walked into the tunnel ahead of me. “But one thing at a time.”
I sat down at the desk, typing in the password he’d given me. His system was good, easy to use and the security was strong. As I got to work, I could feel his eyes on me.
“Enjoying the show?” I asked, with a smile.
“I always do.” He leaned on the desk beside me. “I’ve never seen you work before. You still bite the corner of your lip when you’re focusing.”
I blushed, looking up at him. “I know you want to watch me work, but if you’re going to keep being distracting and sweet, this is going to take forever.”
“I’ll go make coffee.” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head, then walked back to the lift.
I focused my attention back on what I was doing, going through every business that Falcone currently owned or had owned in the past. He was thorough and careful, and it was hard to find anything that could link him to a crime.
At least it was hard, until I came across his casino business accounts. Most of it seemed perfectly fine, but there were a few transactions that seemed off. A monthly payment of $1000 from a tiny Italian restaurant, and random amounts to various shell companies and off-shore accounts.
He was laundering money in and out of the country, and he was good at it. All of his accounts were well secured, and the GCPD would not have known where to look. Apparently they were just as useless as they had been before I left.
I barely noticed when Bruce placed a mug of coffee down beside me, just keeping my attention on everything on the screens. It always amazed me how much information you could find just by looking.
“How’s it going?” He asked, pulling up another chair.
“It depends on how much you think is necessary to ensure he stays in jail.” I took a sip of the coffee. “I could spend days sorting through all this. I probably have enough to keep him in for a few years, but I can get more if needed.”
“Print out what you have right now. If you can get more while I’m picking him up, we can send it through to the GCPD later.” He ran his fingers through my hair. “You really do look so beautiful when you’re focused.”
“Well, I guess this would be a good time to tell you that I think I can find a way to upgrade your system so that your auto-hack can readjust and anticipate when someone tries to back trace it.” I started the printing, then turned to face him. “Your current system is secure enough, but it could be better.”
He leaned over to kiss me. “In that case, I could really use your help around here.”
“I don’t know how you deal with the worry.” I said to Alfred, as I continued searching for more evidence against Falcone. “I just keep thinking he might not come back.”
“I guess I’m just used to it by now. There’s no way I would be able to talk him out of it, so I just have to ensure I help him get back safely.” He handed me a cup of tea. “And if you start helping out, I might be able to go do household work that might distract me from it.”
I laughed, returning to my work. It was taking longer to find things now, because I was searching a lot deeper than I had earlier.
Taking a moment to finish my tea, I heard the tumbler coming back. It came roaring under the waterfall, slowing to a halt on the metal platform. While I waited for Bruce to get changed, I put my feet up on the desk, and watched the news.
“It’s been a strange night at the GCPD, when detectives exited the station to find mob boss Carmine Falcone tied to a railing outside. Also with him was allegedly a folder full evidence of his illegal dealings, but this has not been confirmed.” The reporter said, as she stood outside the GCPD.
She continued talking, but I was distracted by Bruce leaning over the back of the chair and pressing a kiss to the top of my head. I stood up, turning and hugging him tightly.
“Whoa, what’s that for?” He asked, wrapping his arms around me.
“I was worried.” I whispered, pulling back to look at him. “This is so new to me, and I didn’t know what to expect. I’m just glad you’re alright.”
He wasn’t wearing a shirt and I noticed a few new bruises on his chest. I softly reached out, pressing my hand to one.
“Are you alright?” I asked.
“It’s just a bruise, Eve.” He traced the one on my cheek. “If you start worrying about my bruises, I’m going to have to worry about yours.”
I nodded, feeling a little stupid. “Sorry. This is… all a lot. I don’t know if I should be worried every time you go out. Or if I need to have a story prepared for if I need to cover for you. Or if…”
He took hold of my face, interrupting me with a deep kiss. I clutched at his hands, feeling my body relax under his touch. After a moment, he let me go.
“I worry too.” He whispered. “I worry that I’ve put you in danger by telling you the truth. That something will happen to you and I won’t be able to get back in time. That it’s not fair to ask you to cover for me. But… I love you, and we can work all this out.”
I laughed a little, taking his hand as we walked to the lift. “Out of all the reasons I thought you were ditching me for, this was not one I ever could have expected.”
“That is kind of the point.” He slid his arm around my waist.
“We can now confirm that the folder that was handed over to the GCPD was full of evidence against Carmine Falcone. District Attorney Harvey Dent will be taking the case, and he is hoping to head to trial within the month.”
I listened to the news, lying under the desk as I wired in another computer. Bruce was doing something to the tumbler, I could hear him tinkering with it. It was nice just working alongside each other, now that there were no secrets between us.
“Do you think Harvey can do it?” I asked, sliding out so I could see Bruce. “Do you think he can put Falcone away?”
He climbed out of the tank, helping me up. “I think that if there’s anyone who can, it’s Harvey.”
“I don’t really think that was an answer.” I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“I don’t have an answer.” He kissed me softly. “But I think Falcone will have his hands too full with his defence to care about getting back at you.”
I wiped a little smudge of grease off his forehead. “Well, I’m trying not to think about it too much. Thank you for helping deal with my worries, even if you can’t give me certainty.”
He picked me up, placing me on the tumbler so I was higher than him. Then he pressed a couple of kisses to my collarbone.
“This is over, Eve. You can stop worrying, because no matter what happens next, I will always protect you.” He slid his arms around my waist. “Speaking of which, I need you to cover for me at that dinner tomorrow.”
“You’ve barely even told me your secret, and you’re already asking me to cover for you?” I grinned slyly. “Fine. I can do that, if you come over to my place on Saturday and let me have my way with you.”
He kissed me, pushing me down onto the metal. “Deal. Now, is there anything more I can do to help you stop worrying?”
I bit my lip. “You could tell me you love me again.”
“I love you, more than anything.”
