Betty was relieved when Ethel came over and announced they could leave the ritzy party. She was tired of the silly women who kept smiling and giggling to each other about some guy they liked. Ethel chuckled in sympathy at Betty’s obvious delight to escape the party; they said their goodbyes to the pudgy hostess, whose name neither of them could remember. They laughed as they ran down the one flight of stairs and quickly hailed a taxi.
“Betts, you’ll get use to those fools. I ignore them and flirt with the hot guys. Oh here we are, Greg. Good night.”
Greg tried to protest when the taxi dropped him first: he hinted not too subtly that he would love to come with them for a night cap. “Not tonight Greg. Let’s just take it slow, okay Hon?” She sensed Ethel wanted to talk privately, so she sent him home. He sadly got out of the cab, after giving Betty a peck on the cheek. “Call you tomorrow.” Betty smiled at him before he turned and went into his building. Betty didn’t want Greg to feel as if they were more than friends. She was not going to start a new relationship until she was free of Archie. And even though she had no feelings for Archie whatsoever, she would not be unfaithful in this marriage just because he had been.
“Did you meet any new people who’ll back us at the party Ethel?” Betty asked Ethel as soon as they were alone. “Yes Betty, I made a great connection for advertising and getting us some back up money!” Ethel hesitated before continuing.
“That’s great news E!” Betty said. “Who’s our backer?” Ethel looked nervous before she continued, which puzzled Betty until she heard Ethel’s next words:
“Um, hang on to your hat, Betts. It’s...uh...Reggie: he’s going to help us. Once I asked him to…”
“What? Reggie Mantle! My old ex-friend Reggie? Reggie the Wolf Mantle? Why him Ethel?” Betty cut her off, astounded. “Was he at the party?”
“Yes Betty he was at the party.”
“Why didn’t you bring him over?”
“I didn’t know how you’d feel about it...”
Betty shrugged as if uninterested,
“We need his help. He has a zillion contacts, much more than we do. We need all the exposure we can get and he said he’d help, so there it is.” Betty looked upset and Ethel felt bad, but she plunged on.
“I didn’t tell him you were here or that we’re partners. You did say you’d do anything for our business. What’s wrong with an old friend helping us out?”
“Yeah, but…” Was Ethel smirking a me? I know she doesn’t think I feel anything for Reggie! So she decided to go along with it to prove Ethel wrong.
“Oh, alright, Ethel. I guess you’re right. This is good for the business, as long as I don’t want to have any contact with him.” Betty sighed. This was totally unexpected. At her distressed look, Ethel cut in, “I’ll try to keep you two apart as much as I can.: She hugged her friend. “Betty we need a name for our company and we have to choose some very sexy models for our stuff.” Ethel was quick to get off the subject of Reggie Mantle. They were both silent as they thought of names.
“Hey I have it: Angel Blue, Inc.” cried Ethel, thinking of Betty as a blue-eyed angel. Ethel loved Betty as the sister she never had, and would go to hell and back to see her friend happy.
“Nahh! Too dull,” Betty was shaking her head, thinking hard. “I have a good one! Let’s call it ‘Hott Muggs Inc.’, cause you are so hot Muggs!” Betty said, laughing.
“Okay, ‘Hott Muggs’ it is. Damn! It sounds good.” Ethel said. They hugged again. Ethel went to her well stocked wine cooler and took out a bottle of Crystal. Betty went into the kitchen and took out a silver ice bucket, filling it with ice from the icemaker. She decided to make a tasty clam dip and antipasto platter with salt wafers and carried it out to the brown leather sofa. They snacked while waiting for the champagne to chill. They drank a toast to their new business.
“Oh Betty, I almost forgot. You’ll be known as Ann Avery. I don’t want ole Archie and Reggie to know you’re here, so I came up with that name. This can help you hide better. What do you think? Is it okay?”
“I like it Ethel. Ann Avery I am. It’s okay, for now, anyway.”
0-0-0 Later that evening, Ethel called Jughead, and to be sure Betty didn’t hear her conversation, she went outside on the huge terrace where she had a lovely view of Central Park. She gazed unseeing of the view as she and Jughead plotted. Ethel told Jughead about seeing Reggie at the party. “Reggie is bound to see Betty at some point, Jughead. I couldn’t believe they missed seeing each other there. When can you get away?”“In a few days.”
“Reggie’s going to help us get started and I need your help buffering their reunion. He knows I have a partner, but I told him my partner’s name is Ann Avery. We’re going to call the company, ‘Hott Muggs, Inc.’ What do you think of the name? Betty came up with it. She’s so creative.”
“Cute name my sweet. Yep, our Betty is amazing. How is she holding up? Being involved with Reggie will be some crazy ride.” Jughead said.
“She’s doing very well Jughead. Betty looks better than ever and I can’t wait for Reggie to see her. She also served divorce papers on that idiot. Oh what a happy day that was!” Ethel was crowing with laughter. She was so proud of her friend.
“Lovey, I have plane tickets to be there on Saturday. I need to make sure my management staff will be able to handle things while I’m in New York with you”
“Thanks baby. I can always count on you. I love you.”
“Back at ya, baby! I‘ll be glad to get away from here for a while anyway because I’m worn out from dodging Archie. He’s going berserk with Betty gone and wanting a divorce. But Archie’s not the thing to worry about. I’m worried about when Betts and Reg meet again.”
“Me too. I hear bombs bursting in the air. How long can you stay Juggie?”
“As long as you need me, darlin’ girl.” That was what Ethel loved about Jughead the most. If she needed him, he was there.
“I can’t wait to see you, baby.” Ethel needed Jughead nearby because she did not know how Reggie and Betty will take it when they finally met. She knew Betty was still emotionally scarred from her marriage, and Ethel would not let anyone undo all of her hard work to get Betty well. Ethel could not risk anyone hurting Betty, ever again. Ethel needed Jughead’s strength and wisdom to weather the storm that was sure to explode at their reunion.
The emotional shock of another rejection from Reggie would be too much for any one person to handle. It may be needless worry, but since Jughead was coming, Ethel knew that his wise advice and cunning would be needed here when Reggie and Betty crossed paths. And she needed Jughead to handle Archie Andrews. Archie was bound to find Betty and there would be hell to pay when that happened.
0-0-0 The following week, Jughead arrived at Kennedy Airport with Ethel and Betty there to meet him. Betty smiled when she saw Jughead swing Ethel around as they embraced, and kissed. They look so great together. Betty sighed at the sight of them. Will I ever feel like that about anyone again? Someone who’ll really love me, and only me, she wondered. But Betty was truly happy Ethel and Jughead were together.“Hi Betty, you look fantastic!” Jughead was so happy to see Betty looking better than ever.
“Thanks Jughead. I owe it all to E.” Betty kissed Jughead on his cheek, happy to see him. Jughead had grown handsome over the years. He had a very wide nose as a youth, but now he had grown into it. He was still thin, but did work out once in a while. He was very tall, six foot three inches and had hard muscles. He was quite an imposing figure, and still the sweetest guy on earth. He was no longer a food glutton. Jughead felt that since his girlfriend was a beautiful model, he needed to do something to improve his looks. Jughead had decided to get a ‘nose job,’ but Ethel went berserk.
“If you change your nose, I’m gone!”
After that outrage, Jughead never mentioned the ‘job’ again. Ethel loved Jughead the way he was. They all went back to Ethel’s place, riding in style in her limo. “Ethel, I feel like going to a movie tonight”, Betty didn’t want to be in the way of their reunion.
“Betty, don’t be silly” The two lovers already decided the three of them would go out.
“No, you two have a lot of time to make up for. Besides, I need to stop hiding in here and get out. I’ll walk to the theatre on 57th street and see ‘The Notebook’. “Are you sure Betty? We don’t want you to go out alone.” Jughead asked.
“Please don’t go out by yourself. Let’s all go,” Ethel added. Betty would not hear of it. “Then call Greg to go with you.” Ethel suggested.“Look guys, thanks, but I need to do this. I’ll be able to do some advertising by wearing one of our outfits. I wouldn’t hear of being a third wheel and ruining your first night together.” Betty kissed them both as she left. She wasn’t afraid to go out at night because there were always people outside in Manhattan. Betty felt quite safe going to the movies alone. She wore a blue sequined Hott Muggs tee shirt along with very tight black Capri pants that had a little slit up the leg and a heart on the edge of the seam where the slit began. She wore black Christian Louboutin multi-strapped leather shoes: (Ethel had insisted she take them as welcome gift to New York: How Betty hyperventilated when she saw their price in Saks Fifth Avenue’s window!) her hair was down in thick waves, again with Ethel’s insistence. Betty looked eighteen instead of twenty-eight. She giggled at the whistles she had gotten from Ethel and Jughead before she left.
“Work it girl. Sell our stuff!” Ethel called to her. Jughead could not believe how much Betty had changed. She looked alive again. If Jughead was not already in love with Ethel, he would fall for Ethel now, because of all she had done for Betty.
“Good night, you two. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” Betty teased them, waving at them as she left. Jughead had some unfinished business to discuss with Ethel before dealing with the ‘Betty and Reggie issue.’
“Ethel,” Jughead started the conversation, “I want to get married. There, now I’ve asked you. How about it?” As Jughead spoke, he pulled a diamond ring out of his pocket that was large enough to choke a horse. The sight of it rendered Ethel speechless. She was quiet for so long that it was making Jughead nervous.
“Well, Ethel? I really love you, baby girl. Please say something!” he was fidgeting, terrified she didn’t want him.
“Yes Jughead. Yes, yes, yes! I’ll be your wife!” Ethel flew into his arms and kissed him. Jughead breathed a sigh of relief as he slipped the ring on her finger, and they both had tears in their eyes. Jughead pulled Ethel to him for another kiss and she moaned into his mouth. Jughead then started kissing her neck, slowly making his way to her very erect nipples “Yeah baby, um, um, suck it, harder,” her voice only aroused him more, and he grunted like an animal as he alternated sucking and licking her breasts. She had his penis out of his pants and was pushing them down, eager for him to get naked. They actually stopped kissing and groping long enough to tear each other’s clothes off. It had been a while since they had seen each other, and Jughead had a huge sexual appetite for Ethel. After they were both naked, they resumed their kissing and sucking fest.
“Now Jughead, fuck me now, dammit!”
“Here, baby, you got it!” He rammed his nine-inch wood into her as hard as he could.
“Yesssss!” Ethel screamed as he entered her: her first orgasm so far. Jughead usually brought her to several before he came. After a two hour long celebration, Ethel and Jughead talked about Reggie and Betty.
“Archie told me he received the divorce papers, but he won’t sign them. He thinks he can get Betty to come back to him. I don’t get it. When he had her, he paid her no attention and totally dissed her. I know it’ll be a matter of time before he realizes Betty’s here with us. I think Reggie needs to know Betty is here so he can help us protect her.”
Jughead already called Reggie to let him know he was in town and they planned to meet at the upcoming photo shoot.
“Anything you say Juggie. You’re so wise, darling,” Ethel giggled as he began to nuzzle her neck, then her giggles
turned into groans of pleasure as Jughead’s lips travelled downward.
