Suspension without Suspense
Since, I now had to coordinate a BBQ in the next 36 hours or so, I have a lot of work to do. First and foremost I dragged Reggie to the hospital, I needed to see Ethel for myself to know if she’s doing well enough. He really didn’t want to go there. I’d forgotten how petrified of hospitals he was. *sigh* men.
“I’m sorry, but Miss Muggs is not accepting visitors today. You will have to come back tomorrow.” The receptionist at the front desk said.
“But, I just want to know if she’s ok…I mean I don’t have to go in and see her, fine. But I just need to know…you know?” I panicked. I had a feeling they wouldn’t let me in. But shit, come on! “I cannot divulge any of our patients information. Everything here is strictly confidential. I’m sorry unless you are her immediate family, you will have to wait another day.” She replied calmly as she swiveled around in her chair, and went back to her computer. You can easily say I’ved been dismissed. I wanted to ring her chubby neck!!!
“Ok Bet’s chill out. She’s only doing her job. Let’s see if we can find Jughead, I’m pretty sure he’s still here. Probably in the cafeteria.” He said pulling me away from the desk.
Sure enough we found Juggie exactly where we’d thought he’d be. Hungry as ever too. He had food piled up, on not one, but two tables. Man he must be in a bad mood, he usually just piles one. Nervous eating.
“Aww juggie.” I sighed as I hugged him around the shoulders. “She’ll be ok.”
“I’m fine, Bets, just filling up from the long night that I missed.” He replied.
“Yeah, right. You’re not fooling anyone here, Jugs.” Reggie replied as he pulled up a chair next to him. “I watched you eat, before, shit we all have. And this amount is over-kill. Worse it’s the hospital’s cafeteria, not the hilton’s.”
“*sigh* Yeah, I’m just dealing. That’s all. And I know Ethel will be fine. I just…I just don’t like seeing her like that. I burns something inside of me to see it.” He growled. Wow, I’ved never heard that from him before!
“Interesting how all this is going on, and you all agree to a BBQ with out my consent, at my parents house!” I complained.
“So what are the doctor’s saying, really?” Reggie asked, clearly ignoring me.
“That she’ll be ok. Gotta see the dentist in a couple of days though, so they have her on some anti-biotics and pain-relievers. They don’t wanna work on her mouth until she gets a little reign on her nerves. Betty did you know Ethel is hypertensive?” He said looking at me.
“Honestly no. Ethel never really complained too much about her life. But if her nerves are all over the place then, I’m not really surprised Jug.” I said calmly. Ethel life has been a roller- coaster. But I didn’t want to go into detail with Jughead. Unless he’s heard the truth beneath all the lies of the modeling world & Ethel, then I’m not telling! Girlfriends, do not spill on their girlfriends. And I mean that in a non-homesexual way.
“Modeling wears you out Jug, and Ethel started out in college, so it ages you. Mentally!” Reggie said, he spat out the last part because I jabbed him in the stomach with my elbow.
“Yeah, I heard all the rumors. But I didn’t listen too those rags reporters. They make a living off of other peoples pain.” Jughead replied as he stuffed a donut in his mouth. I wonder if he means his ex-wife? Speaking of ex-wife.
“Jughead, what is up with Trula? She seems a few fries short of a happy meal.” I said.
“That’s because she is!” He snapped. Ooook let’s change the subject of women!
“Guys!!” I heard someone shout. I turned to see Midge and Max burst into the cafeteria. Midge gave me a tight hug, while Max jumped into Reggie’s arms.
“I got the message this morning, I didn’t feel right leaving Max with anyone else after what he’s been through last night, so I brought him with me.” Midge puffed as she sat down and grabbed some food off of Jughead’s table. “The receptionist told us you all would be in here.”
“Uncle Reggie I still don’t feel so good.” I heard Max whimper, as he laid his head on Reggie’s shoulder.
“Poor thing.” I sighed as I ruffled his dark head full of hair.
“How’s Ethel?” Midge asked with a banana in her mouth.
“She’s gonna be ok, sum cracked teeth and sore gums. She has a killer head-ache though. Doc put her on anti-biotics to prep her for dental visit Tuesday.” Jughead explained.
“The hell happened when I left?!” Midge asked.
I explained to her everything that went down. It got Jughead cackling for a bit.
“You guys never change.” Midge sighed.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?!” I growled. “We never meant for all this to happen, and I’m pretty sure this will all be on the morning news.”
“It is.” Midge snickered.
“You know, good thing I made sure we got the reunion on tape. Because I knew something was bound to happen.” Reggie snarked.
One of the many, among MANY reasons I did not want to come back here. Too much negativity! I think I need a drink. Oh yeah, I’m on medication. Could this day get any worse?
“Hey! Anyone in here?” I heard a bellow from the entrance.
We all turned to see the newcomer. Geez man it’s a hospital! It was Moose. Boy does he know how to fill a room. Interesting enough was that, I didn’t see Alexis with him.
“Oh! Hey guys! I heard from Dilton that you guys were here already. Is Ethel going to be ok? I came down here as soon as I heard.” He replied as he walked over to us.
“Aw man! Is the lord shitting on me or something!” Midge screeched under her breath.
“Hey moose.” I replied. Wait a minute…I looked as Reggie. Then I saw that Max was still laying in his arms. Oh shit!
“Naw, E is going to be fine.” Jughead replied as he looked over at Reggie.
“Is veronica here too?” He asked as he looked at Reggie.
“*snort* This hospital is too low maintenance and she wouldn’t show her face here, even if it is an emergency.” Reggie chuckled. “Umm, Midge. I think he’s asleep hon.” He said referring to Max who started snoring.
Dear Gawd, this little boy can snore!
“The Benadryl is still in his system. I’ll take em’.” Midge replied as she quickly got up.
“I’ll get him for you. He’s a big kid, that’s for sure.” Moose smiled as he reached for Max. Reggie handed him the boy and scratched the back of his head. “Wow, so this is Max?!”
“Yeah……” She choked as she watching him hold Max. Oh no, Midge is going to have a nervous breakdown.
“Moo-Moo honey! I had a feeling I’d find you here!” I heard that annoying voice of Alexis as she rushed in. “Is Ethel going to be alright? You let her know, that I have contacts with the best plastic surgeon this side of the mid-west. If not my mother’s south American surgeon will do it with out referral.”
“Mom?” Max mumbled. Shit on bricks the banshee’s voice woke the kid!
“I’m here honey.” Midge said in a low voice.
“Midge?” Moose gasped as he looked into Max’s face.
“Your huge.” Max mumbled as he looked into Moose’s face, and smiled. “And you look like me. Cool! Hey mom!”
“Yes, sweetie.” Midge sobbed as she tangled her hand into her hair.
“It’s that guy, that plays football! Um..what’s his name again? I saw it on ESPN! Dude! You look just like me. Cept I have really cool black hair. We could be like long lost cousins!!” Max Giggled, as he hugged a stunned moose’s neck. “This is soooo cool! I can’t wait until school starts I’m telling everybody!”
“The hell is this?!” Alexis screeched as she watched everything. Hmmm. She is acting a little bit too off. Then again, she is off anyway.
“Midge.” Moose repeated, all the while still staring into Max's face.
“Oh man! Oh yeah! Mom said I should have manners. Let me down dude!” He wiggled. Moose seems stuck and wouldn’t let him go. “Well, ok, um…my name is Max! And you’re Moose Mason, right? Coolski!! I membered!...Can I sit on your shoulders? I mean you look big enough.”
As he rattled on and on, I saw Moose’s face swivel to Midge. She grabbed me and I hugged her tightly. Man this is total drama. But I can’t write it down. It’s like an unintentional sabbatical. I knew this was gonna happen sooner or later. But wow. You know?
"Oh man, who's that crazy lady next to you? She looks like a Raggity Ann doll! That's what mom said!" Max replied giggling his head off.
