When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve. Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms
I watched the feed from the cave, feeling less anxious now that I knew Bruce was being smarter. There was still worry, since he was going after Joker, bu I trusted that he would come home safely.
“Here’s your tea.” Alfred placed a mug down on the desk in front of me.
“Thank you, Alfred.” I took a sip, happy to feel the warmth sweep through my body.
As I waited for Bruce to return, I turned my attention to my pregnancy book. It was a lot easier to keep from worrying now that most of my focus was on the baby.
The sound of the tumbler echoed through the cave, and I turned in my chair to watch as it came to a halt close by. Bruce stumbled out, falling to his knees onto the metal platform.
I almost leapt out of the seat, hesitating when I saw blood dripping from his side. Alfred was already over to him, and he looked back at me.
“Get the medical kit.”
I nodded, running over to the cabinet. I grabbed what I needed, then returned, finding Alfred taking off Bruce’s armour. There was a stab wound on his side, and it looked deep.
“Keep him awake.”
I pulled off Bruce’s mask, taking hold of his face. He was looking a little pale, and I guessed he must have lost more blood than I thought.
“Look at me, Bruce.” I said, a little frantically.
His blue eyes focused on mine, and he winced in pain. “I… I got him.”
“Who?”
“Joker. He’s… back in Arkham.” His eyes glazed over a little.
“Hey, don’t you pass out on me.” I tapped him on the cheek. “Tell me about it. Did he do this to you?”
He nodded, gasping as Alfred injected something into him. “He stabbed me.”
“You’re going to be fine. Just stay with me, alright?”
He touched my hand, breathing deep. I looked over at Alfred, who was putting the last few stitches into the wound.
“He’ll be fine, but we need to get him upstairs to rest.” He told me, taping gauze onto Bruce’s skin.
“I can walk.” Bruce wheezed, sitting up.
I knew there was no point arguing with him on this, so I helped him up and pulled his arm over my shoulder. I turned back to Alfred for a moment.
“Are you not coming up with us?” I asked, curious.
He shook his head. “I’ll clean up here and check in once I’m done.”
I helped Bruce over to the lift, holding him close as we slowly made our way up to the manor. He was swaying a little, and it was a bit of a struggle to hold him upright.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered, leaning against me.
“No, you don’t need to apologise to me.” I looked up at him with a smile. “Unless you crush me on the way upstairs.”
As we stepped out into the study, he pulled his arm off me.
“I can walk. You don’t need to help me.” He said firmly, walking towards the door.
“Bruce Wayne,” I ducked in front of him, holding my hands up to stop him going any further. “You will stop, and listen.”
He looked taken aback, but he did as he was told.
“I know you’re used to doing everything by yourself, but you’re going to have to let me take care you while you’re healing from this.” I took hold of his pale face, gently kissing him. “Otherwise, I’m going to keep worrying about you.”
He nodded, putting his arm around my shoulder and letting me guide him up to the bedroom. I helped him change and get into bed, then pulled off my dress, ready to get changed too.
“Wait…” He whispered.
I turned back to look at him. “What is it?”
“Come to bed like that.”
“In my bra?” I laughed, but nodded anyway. “Fine, because you’re injured and feeling sorry for yourself. But just this once.”
I climbed into bed beside him, resting my head on his chest. I wanted to sleep, but I couldn’t until I knew he was asleep and safe. So I lay there, gently tracing patterns on his skin, until I knew he was out.
I placed my tea and a plate with a sandwich down on the bedside table and sat down on the mattress. Bruce was still sleeping, his chest slowly rising and falling. He’d been out for nearly eighteen hours. I didn’t really want to wake him, but he needed to eat or he wouldn’t heal properly.
“Bruce?” I softly rested my hand on his chest. “You need to wake up now.”
He stirred, opening his eyes. “What? Why?”
“You’ve been asleep for nearly eighteen hours. I know you probably want to sleep more, but you need to eat something.” I helped him sit up, then handed him the sandwich. “Eat this, then you can go back to sleep.”
He did as he was told, and I sat beside him, opening my laptop. I scrolled through a furniture store website as he ate. The moment he finished, he took hold of my hand and pressed a kiss to it.
“What’s that for?” I blushed.
“For keeping an eye on me.” He ran his thumb along the side of my hand. “What are you doing?”
“Looking at what we’re going to need before our baby gets here.” I scrolled through a website, looking at different cribs. “I know we still have around twenty weeks left, but I thought if we dealt with all this now, it’s less to worry about later.”
He wrapped his arm around my waist, pressing a kiss to my shoulder. “How do you decide? There’s a lot of options.”
“Well, we could do a theme, and that would narrow down the options.”
“What about that one?” He pointed to a rustic crib made out of a beautiful dark mahogany wood. “A nature theme would work. I’m not really good at this, but…”
I turned, gently pulling him in for a kiss. “That’s perfect. I love it.”
“Is this a good time to mention that we haven’t sorted out what room, in which house, we’ll be turning into a nursery?”
“I…” I hesitated. “I guess I thought you would want me to move in here, is that not what you want?”
He shuffled closer to me, softly taking hold of my face to kiss me. “That’s exactly what I want. I just wanted to make sure you wanted it too.”
I moved to kiss him again, but he winced in pain. Concerned, I put the laptop down and turned to him.
“Are you alright?” I asked.
He nodded. “I’ll be fine. The pain is back, but it’s nothing I haven’t been through before.”
“I’ll go get you something for it.” I stood up, but he took my hand, gently pulling me back down.
He lay down on his side next to me, softly playing with the zip of my jacket. “It’s fine, Eve. I promise.”
“I’m sorry. I’m trying so hard to not worry too much.”
“Shh…” He leaned in to kiss me. “You don’t need to apologise. I just don’t want you to stress yourself.”
“I love you, but I do want you to rest.” I gently pushed on his chest. “I need to sit up, my back hurts.”
I returned to the head of the bed, sitting with my legs out. He lay down, resting his head in my lap.
“I’ll rest, but you have to stay too.” He said, quietly.
“Fine by me.” I ran my fingers through his hair. “I was thinking about just watching a movie anyway. As long as you sleep.”
Placing the laptop on the bed in front of him, I put on a movie and settled down to watch. I sipped my tea, the warmth making me a little sleepy.
Bruce fell asleep quickly, not even fazed by the sounds of the movie. His face was peaceful this time, and it made me happy to see that he wasn’t feeling so stressed, at least for a little while.
I found myself barely even watching the movie. Instead, my thoughts were more on what our life would look like once the baby was here. Things would really change, and I was a little scared of how we would balance parenting when he was out nearly every night.
I knew Alfred and Charlotte would help, but it wouldn’t be the same. Taking a breath, I tried to hold back the tears of anxiety that were suddenly threatening to roll down my cheeks. It felt like every time I solved one problem, I thought of another.
I rested my hand on Bruce’s chest, focusing on his heartbeat. I don’t know why it helped me calm down, but it did. The movie was over by then, and I really needed some water, but I really didn’t want to wake him.
I was debating what to do, when I felt his hand touch mine. He rolled onto his back, looking up at me.
“How long have I been asleep?” He asked, rubbing his eyes.
“About two hours. And you either need to get up and get me some water, or move so I can.” I laughed.
He got off my lap, and I headed into the bathroom to fill my drink bottle. Before I was finished, he walked in behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. I hesitated, feeling a little vulnerable as I looked in the mirror. He must have sensed it, because he gently turned me around and pulled me close.
“I know you’re probably not feeling like it right now, but you are beautiful.” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
“We’re only halfway through this, and I already feel like I don’t recognise my own body. My clothes don’t fit properly, my body is changing, and I don’t feel like myself.” I rested my head against his strong chest, not holding back the tears this time.
“I hear you. What can I do?”
I looked up at him. “Maybe you could come with me when I go clothes shopping and tell me which clothes make me look the most beautiful.”
“If that would help, then I definitely will.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck, standing on my toes to kiss him. He wasn’t going through what I was, and I didn’t imagine he could fully understand, but he did always make me feel better.
