That weekend, Betty sat on a stool near the counter in Midge’s kitchen, crossing her legs. Midge was having a get together and hoped that Betty and Reggie would reconcile. Archie was there and he couldn’t stop staring at Betty, who looked extra hot that night. He would stare, then looked away when she looked in his direction. Archie was puzzled because Betty never went to parties without Reggie nearby. He had not heard of their breakup. Betty continued to play with a pen, while some guy he didn’t know talked to her quietly. She didn't look at that guy either. Archie was dying to know what they were talking about.
Why was Betty here alone? Where’s Reggie? Nancy came in suddenly, saying something to Betty. Archie didn't hear the whole thing, except for Reggie's name. Betty turned pale, rubbing her legs nervously. She shrugged. "I don't care," she said loudly. Archie could tell that wasn't the truth. Something is definitely up, he thought very apprehensive. Betty continued talking to the guy, who said his name was Xavier, all of a sudden seeming to take an interest in him. Reggie came in the kitchen, stopping short when he saw her and Xavier together. Betty ignored him. Archie watched them both nervously. Would they fight? I hope not. He didn't want to see Betty cry over Reggie. Reggie walked up to her, and she looked down as he started to talk to her. She would not look at him. Xavier paused and then left after Reggie stared him down. Archie couldn't hear much of what Reggie was saying to Betty. He could tell Reggie was trying to get Betty to talk to him by the pleading tone in his voice. She still wouldn't look at him, ignoring him and playing with the pen. It looks like they had a fight. Did they break up? Good girl Betty, thought Archie. Nancy, Midge and Chuck, and Moose, came in and sat at the table and were listening to the couple. The loud music shut off, as someone turned on the television instead. Now they could all hear what was going on. "Babe, will you please look at me?" begged Reggie. Still playing with the pen, it shot out in front of her, hitting the table and skidding onto the floor making Archie jump. Betty started laughing. "You're drunk," said Reggie. "Yeah? And you know what? I was having a good time until a couple of minutes ago!" she told him. "Let's go somewhere where we can talk." "How about... not!" she laughed. "Betty, please! I know I hurt you, but you can't just give up on me like this." "You know what Reggie? If you had hit me, it would have hurt me less than what you did to me," she said suddenly. "Betty! You know I would never hit you!" "Yeah, but if you had, it would have hurt me less!" she repeated. He paused, staring at her. "I'm so sorry, babe." he whispered. "I'm so sorry." "That's nice. You're right though. You are sorry." "Come on Betty!" "Fuck you, Reggie!" she snapped. Uh oh, thought Archie. He hoped they wouldn’t make up. "Go away!" she screamed. Reggie sighed. He didn't say anything, just stood there staring at her. "Did he ever show up at your house?" asked Nancy suddenly, completely out of nowhere. Betty smiled at her. "No, no he didn’t! I called him but he wasn't home." she said, sounding annoyed. "Oh, well, he hadn't promised that he would come over." "Yeah, he hadn't promised" said Betty. "Who are you talking about?" asked Reggie. Archie was wondering the same thing. Betty didn't answer. "Who are you talking about?" Reggie repeated. "Oh, I get it. Gimme a break, Betty! I'm not about to believe you're over me already! Not after three years!" "Well can't you let me try?!?" she demanded, sounding upset. "That's the last thing I'm about to do." "Why did you have to come here tonight, Reggie?" she whined. "You’re ruining my night! I was having fun until you came!" "Betty, please!" She jumped off the stool and ran down the hall. Reggie started to follow her, but she came back into the kitchen immediately. She held out a white business envelope to him, saying, "Take it. This is yours..." "What is it?" he asked. "Just take it. I had it in case I ran into you. Here!" she repeated, handing it to him. He took it, opening it. He shook his head furiously, saying, "Betty, no! No! This is yours! Betty, it's not over, come on!" he whispered, taking the shiny item out of the envelope and trying to give it to her. She wouldn't take it back, saying, "No. I don't want it. Maybe they can engrave scrape off my name or something." she said nonchalantly. Reggie bit his lip, trying not to cry in front of everyone. He shook his head again, slowly. "No, Betty! Don't say that. I could never give it to anyone else. This is your ring. Take it." "No," she said coolly. He stared at her. "I don't want it. It's represents a lie," she told him. His eyes widened, and he shook his head furiously. Archie thought he saw a tear run down one of Reggie’s cheeks. "It's not...a lie." Reggie whispered. She nodded. "Oh yes it is. It is! You promised me that you'd always be here for me. And you weren't! When I needed you the most you weren't there!" she accused him, her voice wavering. Archie wondered if she was about to cry. "When I needed you, you spat on me and on our whole fucking relationship! You pretty much told me to fuck off. You can have your stupid fucking ring." "I'm sorry!" he said again. "I didn’t mean what I said, baby, I didn’t! You and I belong together. I'm so sorry. Don't you love me anymore? Here, take the ring; it's yours anyway," he whispered. "No, I don’t. Get away from me. Have a nice life." He swallowed, then reached to grab her hand, forcing her to take the ring. She yelped, trying to twist away. "This is your ring!" he repeated. "I won't take it back. Even if you don't take me back," he whispered, in tears. "I won't take it back." "Oh yeah?" she asked him, backing away from him, holding the ring in a clenched fist in front of her. "This is my ring to do with what I want?" she stumbled. "Fine," she laughed. She spun on her heal, nearly tripping in her haste to run down the hall. Reggie took a step forward to follow her, but then stopped. They all heard the toilet flush, and he stepped back suddenly. Betty came back into the kitchen triumphantly. Everyone was staring at her as if she had two heads, except for Reggie, who was back leaning against the counter, crying silently. "That's what I think of the ring," she told him, although it was unnecessary. "Betty, I love you," he whispered. She just looked at him. Archie wondered if she would give in, if she would say she loved him too. Her face was expressionless. "Well, Reggie, I guess you really blew it then, didn't you?" she told him coldly. He wiped his eyes, staring at her, and she stared back at him. He walked out of the kitchen, with Chuck following him. The door slammed as they left. Betty stood there, shaking, not looking as confident as she had a minute ago. There were a lot more people in the kitchen, who had come to listen when they heard her yelling. "Betty!" exclaimed Nancy. "Oh my God! I can't believe you flushed his ring down the toilet!" "What? Why Not?" Betty asked, disoriented. "It was my ring, remember? It's over. I don't care." "Oh, Betty, I think he's sorry. He looked so pitiful. You made your point. You guys need to get back together. You two belong together." "No we don't!" "Come on," Nancy said. "You should forgive him." "Why? Who the hell's side are you on, anyway? You know what he did to me" she snapped. "I’m on your side! I love you both. But come on, he loves you and I’m sure he’s sorry!" "No, he doesn't love me. He doesn't!" she yelled. "If he's so great, why don't you go out with him!" "Oh come off it Betty!" Midge tried to comfort Betty next. “Betty, you and Reggie are made for each other. Just forgive him, okay hon?” Betty looked at her friends in amazement. "Screw you both! You’re supposed to be on my side. Everybody's against me," she said, starting to cry. "We're not against you! Hey come on Betty!" Betty had fled down the hall, slamming the bathroom door shut behind her. Nancy pounded on the door, concerned Betty was trying to kill herself. “Fuck off Nancy. Just fuck off all of you!!”Betty kept saying this repeatedly until she was exhausted. Finally, Betty came out, still crying. Nancy hugged her, as did Midge and a few other friends of theirs, trying to get her to lay down and rest. Archie stood at the end of the hall as the big group took her, protesting, into Midge’s room. Then they all came out, turning off the light so Betty could sleep. Nancy and Midge made it clear he was no longer welcome there, so he left. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
