I will be here for you
All I want is you
When I see your face
All the Angels are shamed
For You, My Dying Bride
“Are you sure you’ll be safe?” Mum asked.
“I’m just going to a bar.” I buttoned up my shirt. “You know how I get if I’m stuck inside for too long. I need to get out for a little while. Jack will be with me the entire time, I promise.”
She nodded, handing me my shoes. “Just be careful.”
I hugged her gently. “I will. We’re going to Onyx, it’s just a chill night out.”
“I’m sure, but I’m your mother, and when you’re in danger, I’m always going to worry about you.” She softly touched my face. “Your father would be so proud of you. You’ve grown up so much like him.”
“Mum please. You’ll make me cry.” I whispered, trying to blink back tears so I didn’t ruin my makeup.
“Sorry sweetie.” She hugged me again, walking to the door. “When I look at you, I see his eyes. You’re just as stubborn as he was, and you need to hold onto that. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Sure thing.” I waved her goodbye, then turned to the mirror.
Once I was satisfied I looked good enough to leave the house, I headed downstairs to meet Jack. I’d never seen him wear anything other than t-shirts and cargo pants, so finding him in a nice dress shirt and pants was surprising.
“Don’t say a single word.” He laughed, when he saw the expression on my face. “I’m surprised I still own anything that would work for a nice bar.”
“Then we better move quick, before you get dirt on your clothes.” I picked up my bag as we walked out the door.
It was only a short drive to the bar, but it was so nice to be out of the house for a while. Onyx was often crowded, but I was there every time I visited Mum, so the bouncer knew me. He let us cut the line and go inside.
He felt a twinge of jealousy when he watched her leave the house with Jack. He should be the one there with her. Watching her through the cameras was something, but he wanted to touch her again, to feel her skin against his.
He’d watched her crying, the night before, watched as she curled up on her bed, tears streaming down her face. He was going to have to find a way to see her, because he couldn’t take the pain of missing her for much longer.
He was distracted when the door opened and Rob came running in.
“She just flew into Central City.” He leaned on the desk. “We caught her on one of the cameras at the private airport.”
“Good. I want eyes on her as much as possible.”
“You don’t want to move?”
Bane shook his head. “Not yet. I need information first. I need to know what she’s planning.”
“Here you go.” Jack put my drink down, sitting across the table from me. “You look like you could use it.”
“Thank you.” I took a sip. “You haven’t told me how you ended up working with Bane. Does he just pick up strays as he travels the world?”
“I was a marine, for a long time.” He traced the rim of his glass, studying my face. “When I got out, I kinda floated from place to place. I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I was doing small protection jobs when he found me.”
I finished my drink, sliding the glass to the centre of the table. “And you just followed him?”
“It made just as little sense to me as it does to you. But I’d spent my life following orders, and he was offering to give me work I was good at.”
“That does make some sense. It’s hard to stray from what you’ve known for a long time.” I stood up. “I’ll get the next round.”
I walked up to the bar, waiting as the bartender helped another person. The place was crowded, but I was happy to wait.
Then I felt someone grab my arm roughly. Turning to look, I felt my heart begin to race and panic begin to spread through my body. The dark eyes of my ex, Mick, stared back at me.
“I thought you were still in prison.” I tried to keep a calm face.
“I got out, no thanks to you.” He didn’t let go, but squeezed my arm even harder. “How did you manage to stay out, Alice?”
I yanked my arm out of his grip. “That’s not my name.”
“Oh, I know that.” He laughed. “You go by Alex now. And there are people searching for you. People who would be willing to pay a lot of money for information, and even more for a location.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” I needed to get out, and I wanted to run, but I knew it would make things worse. The bar was so crowded that no one was noticing what was happening, and he would spot any signal I tried to make.
He suddenly grabbed my face, his fingers digging into my cheeks. “You put me in prison, you know I could do much worse to you. Don’t tempt me.”
Before I could even reply, a hand clamped around his wrist, pulling him off me. I looked over to see Jack standing there. He looked smaller than Mick, but I knew he was stronger.
“If you touch her again, you won’t be able to do anything.” He said, quietly but firmly. “Now, leave.”
Mick looked between the two of us, clearly weighing his options. “I’ll see you again soon, Alice.” Then he turned and left.
I leaned against the bar, trying to pull myself together.
“Are you alright?” Jack asked, softly touching my arm. “That was your ex, yeah? The one you did all the bank jobs with?”
I nodded. “When he told the police what I could do, and put me in their firing line, he didn’t know that I’d planned for that. I ran, leaving behind mountains of evidence against him. He ended up in prison, and I ran to Gotham.”
“So he still hates you, I guess.” He gently led me out of the bar. “We need to get out of here, it’s not safe.”
I climbed into the car, my whole body shaking. Out of all the things I’d expected to happen, seeing Mick again was very low on the list. If the price was right, he’d sell me out to anyone, so I knew it wouldn’t be long before he gave my location to Talia.
“Take a deep breath.” Jack gently squeezed my hand. “We’ll sort this out.”
“He’s going to tell her.” I said quietly. “She’ll kill him when he’s not useful, and he probably doesn’t care. He’ll take any chance to hurt me.”
He nodded, starting the car. “Then we’ll leave soon.”
“He did what?” He asked, marching through the building with the phone pressed to his ear.
“Confronted her in the bar and threatened her.” Jack replied. “It sounded like he might rat her out to Talia. I don’t know how much longer I can keep her safe here.”
He leaned against the wall, thinking. “I need a few more days. If it gets too hot there, you know where to take her.”
“Sure thing, Boss.”
I sat on the edge of my bed, wiping tears from my eyes. Mum was wrong. There was no way I was going to survive this. Not if my past kept coming for me like this.
Even though I was being quiet, I guess it wasn’t quiet enough, because the door opened, and Mum walked in.
“I’m scared, Mum.” I whispered, watching as she rolled a chair over to me.
She sat down, taking hold of my hand. “I’m going to ask you a question, and I want you to really think before you answer. Is he worth it?”
I opened my mouth, but she pressed her finger to my lips.
“Think first. Is he worth all this fear, all these tears?”
I looked down at my hands, and really thought about it. The way Bane made me feel when I was with him, it was so strong, almost like a drug. I wasn’t sure if it was a good or bad thing, but it was something I was damn sure that I would fight for.
“Yes.” I said quietly. “He is worth it.”
She nodded. “Then you have to keep fighting for as long as you can. You push on, so that you can see him again. If it’s worth it, you’ll find a way to get through.”
“I don’t even care if I get hurt. I just want to be with him again.”
“I know, sweetie.” She stood up. “I’ll bring you some tea, then you should try and get some sleep.”
I picked up my book, trying to focus on the words, but it was hard. I felt like I hadn’t slept in days, and I’m pretty sure I was just running on anxiety.
After a few minutes, Mum returned and placed the tea down on my bedside table. She sat on the edge of the bed and gently pulled the book out of my hands.
“Do you want to talk about what happened tonight?” She asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t know what else there is to say. You warned me that Mick was dangerous, I ignored you, and now I have to live with an ex who would sell me out if he could make enough money from it. And I’ve put you in danger, because he probably followed me home and knows about this place.”
She squeezed my hand. “Don’t worry about me. I’ve been through far worse than anything an ex of yours could do. I’ve run more times than I can count, and if you end up having to go, I’ll give you all the support I can. When this is all over, you better bring him by to meet me.”
“I will.” I hugged her gently, stifling a yawn. “I guess I should drink this tea and get some rest.”
