But men often mistake killing and revenge for justice. They seldom have the stomach for justice. Robert Jordan
I paced back and forth around the cave, trying to keep myself calm. As I passed Alfred for probably the tenth time, he gave me an exasperated look.
“Please, Eve. Sit down.” He pulled out a chair for me. “He knows what he’s doing, and he’ll come back soon.”
I did as I was told, tapping my good on the ground in anxious impatience. “He’s never been out of contact for this long, and I’m scared for him.”
“I know. But he’s going after a very dangerous man, and he needs to stay focused.”
I nodded, resting my elbows on the desk. None of this was making me feel better about the choice to keep my baby, and I was really starting to doubt that I’d made the right choice.
“I’ll be upstairs. I… I can’t deal with any of this right now.” I got up and headed out to the study.
There was no way I could sleep, so I started the fire and sat down to read something. It didn’t matter what I was reading, I wasn’t paying attention anyway. All I could think about was the new fear I had that I wouldn’t be able to keep my baby safe in this city.
There was no living in blissful ignorance anymore, I knew far too much. I wanted to make Gotham better, to help improve it, but I was so scared now.
I must have been sitting there for well over an hour, and I was nearly asleep, when I felt a hand touch my arm. Opening my eyes, I found Bruce kneeling in front of me. There was blood on his face, and his arms looked pretty scratched.
“Bruce? What happened to you? Are you alright?” I frantically looked him over, trying to see where all the blood was from.
He caught my hands, stopping me. “Most of it isn’t my blood.”
I looked at him in disbelief. “So… you… did this to someone else? What’s going on with you? You’re being reckless, and I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I promised you I would get him back into Arkham, and I will. But he is violent, and angry, and it’s not easy to deal with him.”
“I just… there’s blood all over you, and I want you to come home safe each night.” I wiped some of the blood from his face. “Please, Bruce. Be careful.”
“I’m trying, Eve. But I won’t let our baby be born in a city overrun by craziness like Joker.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “I’m going to go have a shower, are you coming up to bed?”
“In a few minutes.” I gave him a small smile.
Once he was gone, I pulled out my phone to check the news. I needed to know what he’d done before I could even consider sleeping. It wasn’t surprising that the first thing I found was a video, but what was surprising is what the video showed me.
It wasn’t a fight that he’d been in. It was a beat down. He was fighting with an anger I’d never seen before, and it scared me a little.
I didn’t really want to face Bruce right then, but I knew that if I didn’t have this conversation, I could lose him to the anger. He was so protective, and I loved him for it, but I was scared he was going too far now.
I hesitated outside the bedroom door, unsure of even how to start. The shower was still running, so I quietly stepped inside and sat down on the bed. I thought I would have a few minutes, but before I could even think, the water turned off and Bruce came out wearing a towel.
“We need to talk about this.” I said quietly, not looking at him yet. “I saw video from tonight.”
“I did what I had to in order to keep you safe.” He walked over to the closet to put some clothes on.
“No. You went further than that, and you know it.” I tucked my feet underneath me, watching him. “I thought you were past all this anger, but what I saw tonight, it wasn’t someone I recognised.”
“If I don’t go through with this, he’ll keep getting away.” He put his shirt on and sat down, gently pulling me into his lap. “When I started doing this, it was about making this city better. But now… all I want is to make sure that you, and our baby, stay safe. This is the only way I know how.”
I took hold of his face, my eyes on his. I was going to have to be brutal about this, but there were no other options. “I’m not asking you to stop, Bruce. I would never ask that. I’m just asking you to be smart about this. Just… think about how hard it was for you after your parents died. Do you want our child to grow up without a father? Because that’s where you’re heading right now.”
A look of realisation swept over his face, and he held me tightly, burying his face in my neck. I was momentarily taken aback, and wasn’t sure what to do. Then I realised from the heaving of his chest that he was crying.
I wrapped my arms around him, trying not to cry myself. I hated seeing him like this, but I wasn’t about to lose him in what was quickly turning into a quest for vengeance, not justice. I knew I’d hurt him, and that was going to weigh on my conscience for a little while.
It had been a long time since I’d held him through tears, and it was still just as hard. I hated seeing him so upset, and it was worse when I was the cause of it.
“I’m so sorry.” I whispered, running my fingers through his hair. “I didn’t know how else to get through to you. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“No…” He sat back, wiping his eyes. “I needed to hear it.”
I brushed the tears from his cheeks, leaning in to kiss him softly. “We’re in this together, but you keep pushing me away to deal with things alone. Maybe you can do all this on your own, but I can’t. I need you, Bruce.”
“I’m so used to doing all of this alone, without having to think about anyone else.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “But it’s not just me anymore. It’s me, and you, and the baby. I’m sorry that I haven’t been 100 percent in on this, and that I’ve been so reckless.”
“I love you, and I will support everything you do.” I traced his jawline with my fingers. “But I can’t just sit back and watch you get yourself killed without saying something.”
He carefully turned, tipping me onto the bed. Lying down beside me, he gently rested his head below my chest, just above my bump.
“I don’t know if you can hear me yet,” He said quietly, resting his hand approximately where the baby was. “But I want you to know that I love you, and I can’t wait to meet you.”
“You’re starting the sweet talk pretty early.” I laughed.
He sat up, handing me one of the extra pillows. “I have to catch up, you have an unfair advantage.”
I rolled onto my side, placing the pillow between my knees. “I would happily trade the advantage if it meant not having to go through the pregnancy.”
“I’m sorry, Eve.” He lay down in front of me, touching my cheek. “I can’t imagine how hard it is for you.”
“It’s not so bad, just so tiring.” I moved closer to him, placing my hand over his. “My whole body seems to be changing in preparation for the baby, and it’s just a lot to take in.”
He didn’t say anything, just played with my hair. I didn’t need him to say anything anyway, it was enough to have him there with me. Just knowing he was safe, that he was in the bed with me, it was enough to calm the anxiety.
“I should really get some sleep.” I whispered, blinking slowly.
He nodded. “Do you need me to fill your water bottle?”
“Yes please.” I rolled over and handed it to him, then settled down to sleep.
After a minute or so, Bruce returned, putting the bottle on the bedside table. He climbed under the covers behind me, gently pulling me close.
“I love you.” He whispered, pressing a kiss to my shoulder.
“I love you too.” I closed my eyes, already half asleep. “But if you wake me up when you get out of bed again, there’s a good chance I will murder you.”
“I’ll do my best to be quiet.”
