Lying is done with words, and also with silence. Adrienne Rich, Women and Honor: Some Notes on Lying
“It’s so beautiful out here.” I whispered, sitting on the bench beside Bruce and looking out at the trees. “I wish it was easier to just sit, and not worry about anything for a while.”
I was thankful that it was a cooler evening, so I could cover my arms, but I was running on anxiety about him finding out.
He touched my cheek, turning my face to him. “I guess all we can do is find a way to have a few moments of peace.”
I hesitated, knowing that if he wanted to go further than just kissing, I would probably be found out. After a moment, I kissed him anyway. I just wanted some time where the worries of the past few days would be gone, but I should have known it wouldn’t be that easy.
His hand slid up my side, hitting the large bruise that had formed on my ribs. I flinched back, with a whimper, pain shooting through my body.
“Are you alright?” He asked, looking me over. Taking hold of the edge of my shirt, he pushed my hand aside and lifted it to reveal the bruise and some of the cuts. “Eve, what happened?”
“It’s nothing.” I pulled my shirt back down, wrapping my arms around myself. “I’m fine.”
“Don’t do that. What happened?”
I stood up, turning to face him. “It’s. Nothing. I’m handling it.”
“You’re lying.” He stood in front of me. “Tell me what’s going on.”
“Why? Why should I tell you anything when you’ve clearly been less than truthful with me?” I snapped, angrily.
“Don’t turn this back on me.”
“Why not? Ever since your parents died, you’ve never told me the complete truth about anything. You made so many excuses for everything, and I said nothing because I thought it was just part of your grieving. But you’re still doing it, Bruce!”
I didn’t know how he was staying so calm, but it was making me angrier. I stepped away from him, trying to calm down.
“Do you think I don’t notice when you disappear in the middle of the night and return before the sun comes up?” I brushed my hair out of my eyes. “I don’t know where you go, but I never pushed you for answers because I wanted to trust you. Why can’t you just trust me?”
“Because someone hurt you, Eve!” He gestured to my side. “Whatever you’re into, just let me know so I can help.”
“I don’t need your help.” I stormed past him, through the manor. “There is nothing that you can do that I can’t.”
He caught up with me at my car, taking hold of my arm and turning me around. “Listen to me. You’ve been gone a long time, you have no idea how dangerous this city is.”
“Don’t touch me.” I yanked my arm out of his grip. “You don’t know what I’m capable of.”
Before he could reply, I climbed into the car and drove off. I was angry at him for prying, when I’d never done that to him.
By the time I got home, I was in tears. I had no idea where we stood now, but I knew it was going to be hard to trust him again unless we both told each other the truth, and I wasn’t sure I could do that.
I dragged myself into the bedroom, lying down to just cry. I knew this was at least partially my fault, but that didn’t make it hurt less. He made me happy, so being this angry because of him seemed so much worse.
I woke coughing, opening my eyes to find that my bedroom was filling with smoke. My head was aching, and I immediately began to panic. Climbing out of bed, I grabbed the photo and my mother’s necklace from my bedside table and crawled to the living room. There was nothing else I needed in that apartment, all my photos were online, but I didn’t want to lose the original of it, no matter how angry I was at Bruce.
The kitchen was on fire, the heat blinding me. I was in so much pain, and I couldn’t seem to catch my breath. The crawling was so hard, and it wasn’t getting any easier. The fire crackled around me, suffocating me and ripping the oxygen from the air around me.
There was a loud bang as something in the kitchen exploded, sending fire across my path to the front door. I curled up into a ball, tucking the photo and necklace into my bra to protect them.
As I faded out, my vision going fuzzy, a black shape came towards me. Whoever it was picked me up, but I was unconscious before I could see who it was.
The first thing I felt as I came to was pain. My chest felt tight, and my head was pounding. There was something on my face and I began to panic, opening my eyes as I tried to pull it off. Hands grabbed mine, and I turned to see Harvey standing there.
“Stop, Eve, careful.” He sat on the edge of the bed. “You inhaled a lot of smoke.”
I was breathing much faster than usual, and it sounded strange in my ears. As I tried to take a deep breath, I began to cough uncontrollably for a few moments.
“I’ve pressed the button for the doctor. You’re going to be alright, just breathe.” He squeezed my hand.
I pulled the mask away from my face. “What are you doing here?”
“Keep the mask on until the doctor comes.” He helped me put it back. “I was down the hall talking to a witness, and I saw them bring you in. When I called Bruce, he said that the two of you had had an argument, so I thought I would stick around until you woke up. You’ve been in and out a few times, and I thought you were waking up fully when they took your airway tube out, but then you went back under for a while.”
I was so close to just bursting into tears when the door opened and a doctor walked in.
“Welcome back, Miss Huntington. You had us worried for a little while there.” He helped me take the mask off, replacing it with a nose tube. “Take a deep breath for me.”
I did as I was told, ending up in a coughing fit again.
“Things are looking better than when you came in, but you’re likely going to have some issues breathing for a couple of days, and the cough will probably persist too. I’ll give you something to help with the cough, but I want you to stay for at least another night, just so we can make sure that you don’t worsen.” He handed me a cup of water and some pills. “Water will help with the sore throat.”
I nodded, downing the pills. “Who… How did I get out?”
“You were dropped off on the helipad by Batman.” He replied, turning to leave. “I’ll leave you to rest for now, but I’ll check back in later. Try to breathe slowly and deeply, but if you have any serious trouble, call me back in.”
“So,” Harvey held my drink as I sat up straight. “Do you want to tell me what happened? I know we didn’t keep in contact while you were in England, but you’re really not the type to leave the gas on in the kitchen. Did someone do this to you?”
“I…” I coughed again, taking my cup to have a sip. “I woke up to find my bedroom filling with smoke.”
“You didn’t see or hear anything?”
“No.” I took a big wheezing breath in, feeling so tired. “Nothing. I don’t know what happened. I don’t really want to talk about it right now.”
He nodded, standing up. “I’ll come back later. Just take it easy, Eve. You’re going to be alright.”
“Thank you for being here when I woke up. I probably would have really panicked if I was alone.”
“Look, I don’t know what happened between you and Bruce, but maybe you should call him. He wanted to be here, but thought you wouldn’t want to see him.” He softly touched my arm. “Let me know if you remember anything.”
I watched him leave, nearly in tears as all the worry came flooding back. I was exhausted, but how could I sleep when I was in so much danger? There was no one left I could turn to, I was going to have to end this myself.
I was nearly asleep, still wheezing with each breath, when Charlotte came in. She was carrying a bag of my things, and she set it down gently on the floor. “I came as soon as I heard you were awake. How are you feeling?”
I yawned, shrugging. “Not amazing… Did anything survive?”
“Just what you came in with.” She handed over the necklace and photo. “You were rescued, but it took a while to put the fire out.”
“I guess I should be glad I only had the basics at the apartment then. And that I had backups of all my photos.” I carefully reached for my water, taking a sip. “I’ll be alright. It just hurts to breathe and I keep coughing a lot.”
She squeezed my hand. “Your bedroom back at the manor is safe, so once you get out of here, I can take you home. Your laptop was definitely destroyed. I brought you a new one so you have something to do while you’re stuck here.”
“Thank you.”
