Heat Waves
That night, the mansion burned—not with fire, but with something far more primal.
Penny and Gambit had barely finished, bodies still slick and trembling, hearts racing in the aftermath of the glitch’s fury, when the first muffled moans drifted through the walls. Then louder—beds creaking, gasps turning to cries, low laughter edged with hunger echoing down the hallway. The pheromones had slipped the room’s containment, amplified by the suit’s lingering emitters and the raw intensity of their release. They spread like a warm tide, igniting every corner of the residential wings.
Penny froze, eyes wide with dawning horror. “Remy… it spread.”
Gambit pulled her close, already reaching for his trench coat. “We gotta warn—”
A soft knock cut him off. Professor Xavier’s voice came through the door—calm and measured, but with an unmistakable strain.
“Penny. Remy. May I enter?”
They scrambled for sheets, hearts pounding anew. Gambit cracked the door.
Xavier wheeled in, composure intact despite the faint flush on his cheeks and the subtle tremor in his hands. Behind him, the hallway was a dim tableau of chaos: shadows moving together, soft cries and murmurs filling the air.
“I’ve contained it as best I can,” he said quietly. “Telepathic dampeners are active across the mansion. The younger students remain asleep and fully shielded. The adults…” A small, wry smile touched his lips. “They’re managing. It was quite… potent.”
Penny buried her face in her hands, mortified heat flooding her cheeks. “Professor, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for—”
He raised a gentle hand. “No apologies are necessary. This was beyond your control—an unintended consequence of the glitch. The outburst was stronger than any before. In the future, if you sense even the faintest warning, alert me immediately. Five minutes is all I need to isolate sections more effectively.”
Gambit nodded solemnly. “We will. Promise.”
Xavier’s gaze softened, encompassing them both. “You are not the first to challenge this mansion’s structural integrity, nor will you be the last.” He paused, voice warm. “And Penny—this is not weakness. It is a challenge you continue to meet with grace and courage.”
She managed a shaky laugh through her embarrassment. “We’ll… keep the fireworks more contained next time.”
Xavier chuckled softly. “See that you do. Good night.”
The door closed, and the mansion gradually quieted under his shields.
Penny collapsed back against Gambit, a mix of laughter and tears bubbling up. “We just accidentally started an orgy in Charles Xavier’s school.”
Gambit kissed her temple, pulling her closer. “Welcome to de family, cher. Properly.”
