Remember the first dance we shared?
Recall the night you melted my ugliness away?
The night you left with a kiss so kind
Only a scent of beauty left behind
Beauty and the Beast, Nightwish
“Are you sure your mum will be okay with me staying with you?” Jack asked, as we dragged our luggage up to the front door.
“You’re the least objectionable person I’ve brought home, she’ll probably be ecstatic to have you.” I knocked on the wood. “I’ve brought home drug users and one guy who used to hit me, a mercenary or two wouldn’t even faze her. She was more involved in the crime world than I was, working high up in the Santini family before they were killed.”
He looked like he was about to say something more, but then the door opened. Mum stepped out, her eyes wide in surprise.
“Alexandra, I haven’t heard from you in a month!” She wrapped her arms around me in a suffocating hug. “What are you doing here?”
“Mum… I can’t breathe.” I wheezed, carefully detaching myself from her. “This is my friend Jack. We need a place to stay for a little while.”
She stepped aside to let us in, holding out her hand to jack. “I’m Julia, please come in.”
“We really appreciate it.” Jack gently shook her hand. “Hopefully we won’t be in your way for very long.”
Mum took hold of my arm. “Well, he’s much more polite than the last few men you’ve brought home.”
“We’re not dating, Mum.” I turned to Jack. “If you want to drop your stuff, there’s a spare room at the top of the stairs on your left.”
He headed upstairs to the spare room. I let Mum drag me into the kitchen, where I sat down on one of the stools. She poured me some tea, and I hesitated, unsure how to even start the conversation.
“Sweetie, what’s going on?” She asked, placing the mug in front of me. “Things in Gotham seemed to be going so well, so what changed?”
I wrapped my hands around the mug of tea, and began to tell her everything that had happened over the past few weeks. Jack came past a couple of times, checking the security of the building, but he seemed satisfied and sat down for some tea as well.
Mum listened intently, leaning on the bench. Once I’d finished talking, she began a shopping list.
“You can both stay here for as long as you need.” She reached out and squeezed my hand. “I’ll need to go do some food shopping though, because I definitely do not have enough food to feed the two of you. I’ll be back soon.”
Ripping the list off the pad, she headed out. I looked down at my tea, feeling Jack’s eyes on me.
“Thank you for coming with me.” I said quietly. “I know you’d rather be back with the others.”
He shook his head. “Honestly, at least there’s an actual threat. I’ve done protection jobs before, and it’s usually some rich person who got a little paranoid because someone looked at them wrong. Besides, you’re much more interesting to talk to than most of the people I work with.”
“Wait until you’ve been here a while longer. You’ll get sick of her pretty quickly.” I laughed a little.
“Hey, listen.” He squeezed my arm. “I’ve got you covered. Hopefully we won’t be stuck here very long. I know you’re freaked out, but chances are, now that you’re out of the way, Talia will go straight for Bane and he can deal with her soon. I need to finish up with the security stuff.”
I nodded. “Sure. I’m going to go have a bath. You’ll know when Mum is getting home, because you’ll hear her singing.”
He laughed, getting up. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Tell me that one of you has something.” He shouted, slamming his hands down on the desk.
“We’re looking, but she’s completely off the grid. There’s only ten of us, we don’t have the manpower to search the whole planet.” Barsad replied, hesitating when he saw the angry look in Bane’s eyes.
“She’s left us alone until now, and the only thing that’s changed is Alex. So find out how Talia knows about her. Go through every second of her life if you have to.” He turned away, looking out the window as his right-hand man left the room.
She’d only been gone a few hours, and even though he knew he’d sent her away to keep her safe, he had a sinking feeling that Talia would still go after her there. He needed to end this, and he knew it would only end one way.
I lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. It wasn’t easy to sleep, between the constant anxiety of Talia coming after me, and being alone in the bed. My mind just couldn’t settle, and all I was doing was tossing and turning.
As dawn hit, I gave up on trying to sleep, and sat on my window seat watching the sun rise. It was shaping up to be a beautiful day, but it didn’t help. I was back to dealing with things mostly on my own, and it didn’t feel good.
This city wasn’t my home, and even though I loved being around my mum, I didn’t belong here. But I didn’t have a choice, and it killed me inside to have to hide here.
“Alex, honey, come out and have some breakfast.” I heard Mum call, jerking me out of my thoughts.
Looking down at my phone, I realised it was ten am. I must have fallen asleep for a little while. I got up, and walked over to the door. I opened it, running my fingers through my hair.
“Did you sleep at all?” Mum asked, pulling me in for a gentle hug.
“A few hours maybe.” I leaned against the door, trying to hold back a yawn. “Give me a few minutes, I’ll get changed and come down.”
She squeezed my hand. “I’ll make coffee.”
Closing the door again, I pulled out the first clothes I could find from my luggage and changed into them. As I slowly woke up, I was feeling a little better, but there was a heavy black cloud that was hanging over my head.
I glanced at myself in the mirror, sighing when I realised I looked as exhausted as I felt. There was no pretending this wasn’t affecting me, not that anyone would have believed me if I’d tried, least of all my mother.
I brushed my hair, then headed downstairs. Mum was in the kitchen, making bacon and eggs, but I couldn’t see Jack anywhere.
“He went out.” She said, noticing my looking around. “Said something about getting better security.”
“I’m sorry for this.” I took the plate she offered me. “I didn’t want to just come here and change your life.”
She shook her head. “I would rather you come here and upend my whole life than disappear and I never know what happened. You always have a place here, you know that.”
I picked at my breakfast, trying not to cry. “I’m not scared that I’ll get hurt. I’m scared that I’ll never see him again.”
“You’re so much like your father was.” She leaned against the bench, watching me. “Always putting the people you love over your own health. I know you’re hurting, and I can tell you love him, but he’s doing this to keep you safe. Eat something, Alex. You need to keep your strength up.”
I did as I was told, feeling a little like a kid again. She was right, I needed to make sure I was fed and rested in case something went wrong. And I did feel better once I got some food in me.
“You look better already.” She commented, pouring another coffee for me. “You’re going to get through this, even if it feels like you won’t.”
“I think you gave me that same line after my first boyfriend broke my heart.” I laughed.
“And you survived, didn’t you? So maybe you should listen to me.” She opened the dishwasher, beginning to unload it. “I’ve been where you are before, and it hurts. But you are strong enough to survive this.
“Alright, Mum.” I grinned up at her. “I get it. You can’t even give me one day to freak out?”
She shook her head. “Nope. Only because I know you’ll take one day and turn it into a week of wallowing.”
“Am I at least allowed out of the house?” I asked, as I heard the front door open.
“Sure, if you take me with you.” Jack called out, placing a bag down on the coffee table. “You and I are going to be very good friends for a while.”
I rolled my eyes, looking over at mum, who laughed.
“Sorry, sweetie.” She walked past me. “I can’t help you. I have to get ready for work.”
He watched her through the cameras that he’d had Jack set up, wishing he could reach out and touch her. She was sitting on the couch, reading a book. He could see the fear and sadness on her face, and he wanted to just run to her and make it better.
But he had to keep focused. He was doing this so he could be with her, because Talia wouldn’t stop. He wanted Alex safe, but he didn’t know if he could do what needed to be done.
Even through all his anger and hatred of Talia, there was a place deep inside him that still seemed to care about her. He knew that eventually he would have to confront that part of himself.
