Don't give in to your fears. If you do, you won't be able to talk to your heart. Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
“Are you ready for this?” Bruce asked, squeezing my hand.
I shook my head. “Not even remotely. But I’d rather get this over with now than when it’s so obvious I can’t avoid it.”
He leaned over to kiss me, then got out of the car. He walked around to my side, helping me out.
“Deep breath.” He whispered, leaning in to kiss me. “We’ve got this.”
Taking his hand, I walked alongside him towards the entrance of the restaurant. There were a lot of reporters around, trying to get photos of all the people heading in. Before I could choose one to talk to, I heard a voice.
“Eve! No one’s heard much from you since your charity event over two months ago. Is there something going on?”
Turning, I found the young woman I’d spoken to way back when Bruce and I first went to a party together. I gently tugged on Bruce’s arm, walking over to her. She looked me over, and her eyes widened slightly.
“Well, since you asked.” I gave her a smile. “I’m pregnant.”
As soon as the word left my mouth, I felt the mood around us change. It was strange, like an electric shock just zapped between everyone. It was a little scary, especially when Bruce squeezed my hand protectively.
Suddenly there were voices all around us, questioning and probing. It was overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure what to do. Then Bruce took action, wrapping his arm around my waist and guiding me inside.
“Are you alright?” He asked, touching my face.
I nodded, a little shakily. “I didn’t realise it would be quite so…”
“You’re pregnant?!?”
I turned to find Lily running over. She pulled me into a firm hug, then stepped back to look at me.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to overshadow your dinner.” I said quietly, a little embarrassed. “But it’s kinda hard to hide it now.”
She shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. I organised this dinner as more of a party, rather than a formal, special event anyway. Come, I want to hear more before the food is served.”
I turned back to Bruce before she pulled me away. “Can you get me a juice?”
I was dragged over to a table, and she sat me down, making sure I was comfortable. Then she sat beside me.
“How far along are you?” She asked, sipping at her wine. “Clearly well on your way.”
“About twenty weeks.”
She took my hand, gently squeezing it. “I always thought I would be the one who got pregnant first. I’m excited for you, Eve!”
“Are you trying for one too?” I asked, readjusting how I was sitting.
She shook her head. “Not for a little while longer. Our plans were put on hold by Anthony being promoted to mayor. But hopefully we’ll be trying soon.”
People were starting to take their seats, and Lily excused herself. Bruce sat in the seat beside me, handing over a glass of something pink with a sprig of what looked like rosemary sticking out of it.
“Grapefruit and rosemary mocktail.” He told me. “I figured it would be more interesting than just having juice again.”
I took a sip. It was refreshing and nice, and he was right, much more interesting than the orange juice I’d basically been living off.
“It’s perfect, thank you.” I said quietly, leaning against the back of my chair. “You are far too good to me.”
“Because I love you.” He leaned over, pressing a kiss to my cheek.
I blushed, squeezing his hand. It was nice to get out, especially for a quieter night like this. But it was still so exhausting, and I barely managed to make it through dessert before I started to yawn.
“Are you ready to go?” Bruce asked, softly rubbing my back.
I nodded. “Sorry, I know it’s still early.”
“Shh…” He comforted me. “You know I love having an excuse to leave.”
We stood up, said our goodbyes and apologies, then headed out. For all the back and forth emotions I was feeling about my pregnancy, I couldn’t deny that having an excuse to leave places early was nice.
“I’m so tired.” I yawned, covering my mouth with my hand.
“If you fall asleep, I’ll just carry you upstairs.” He gently squeezed my knee. “You don’t need to try and stay awake.”
I nodded, closing my eyes and leaning my head against the window. It was hard to get to sleep, but I managed to rest for a few minutes.
Then I heard a strange sound, like the screeching of brakes. Opening my eyes, I had barely a second to see headlights before a car slammed into our side, just behind my seat. Our car spun around, and my head hit the window.
The other car sped off, and I could have sworn I heard laughter. I was dazed, and didn’t notice Bruce getting out of the car until he was on my side. He yanked my door open, getting me out and sitting me down on the ground.
I faded in and out, but I could hear Bruce on the phone talking. My head hurt, and in my dazed state, all I could think about was the baby.
“Eve, look at me.” He took hold of my face, looking me over. “Aside from your head, are you hurting anywhere else?”
I could barely focus, but I managed to keep it together for long enough to think about my pain. “I don’t think so…” I was panicking, tears streaming down my face. “The baby…”
“I know. The police and ambulance are on their way, but there’s nothing we can do right now.” He wiped blood off my face. “Stay with me.”
I closed my eyes for a moment, but it was so hard to open them again. I could hear sirens getting closer, but they still seemed so far away.
Then I felt hands lifting me up. I opened my eyes, finding that I was being lifted onto the ambulance bed. There were voices, and so much talking, but I couldn’t seem to interact with them. I was still conscious, but it was like someone else was controlling me, and all I could do was watch it happen.
“Eve, can you hear me?”
I opened my eyes, wincing as bright hospital lights hit me. It took a moment, but I could see him standing over me.
“Bruce?” I whispered.
He nodded, resting his hand on my cheek. “I wondered if you were fully conscious over the past hour. They mentioned you might be dazed for a little while. Do you remember how we got here?”
“I…” I blinked as the memory of the crash came back into my mind. Then I started to panic. “The baby… Is the baby alright?”
“The baby is fine.” He leaned in to kiss me. “They did an ultrasound, and everything is fine. The both of you are so strong.”
We were interrupted by a doctor pulling back the curtain and walking over. He gave me a comforting smile before checking my vitals.
“Welcome back. You were very talkative on the way in, but I’m guessing you probably won’t remember any of that.” He wrote something down on the chart, then put his pen away. “Aside from a mild concussion and a bit of whiplash, you’re looking fine. When I checked on your baby, everything was good. It would be best for you to go see your OB/GYN in a few days, just for an extra check up, and I want you to rest until then, but you should be fine to go home in an hour or so.”
“Thank you.” I wiped tears from my eyes.
I spent the next hour napping a little, comforted by Bruce softly running his fingers through my hair. I still wasn’t calm when Alfred came to get us, but I wasn’t in a state of blind panic anymore.
I wanted to fall asleep on the drive home, but every time I closed my eyes, I started to panic. It felt like the longest drive I’d ever taken, because every corner brought fear that we were going to get rammed again.
“We’re home.” Bruce squeezed my hand, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I didn’t reply, just followed him upstairs to the bedroom. As I sat down at the head of the bed, I could tell Bruce had noticed that I was being so quiet.
He sat down at my feet, taking my shoes off. “I can see that you aren’t alright. Do you want to talk about it?”
I bit my lip, taking a second. “It was Joker who hit us, wasn’t it? I heard him laughing as he drove away.”
“Yes, it was.”
“Is he targeting us? Does he know about you? Are we safe here?” I was rambling again, and he softly touched my cheek to calm me down.
“I don’t think so, no, and yes.”
I reached for my water, taking a long drink. “He could have killed our baby tonight. Promise me you’ll stop him.”
He nodded. “I’m going to stop him, and I’ll make sure both of you are safe. But I need you to trust me, please. It’s not going to be easy.”
“I do trust you.” I leaned in to kiss him. “So much. But tonight was… I really thought we were going to lose the baby.”
He wrapped his arms around me, holding me close. “What can I do? How can I make you feel safer right now?”
I clung to his arm. “Right now? Get into bed with me and hold me until I fall asleep.”
He helped me get changed, and climbed under the covers with me. It was hard to fall asleep, but his warm arms around me kept me comforted, and I eventually managed to drift off.
