When someone loves you, the way they talk about you is different. You feel safe and comfortable. Jess C. Scott, The Intern
“Look.” I squeezed Bruce’s hand. “That’s our baby.”
I still hadn’t gotten used to the feel of the ultrasound, but it was easy to ignore when I could see my baby. It looked like a baby now, and that helped me feel a little less terrified about everything.
“If you don’t want to know the sex, you should look away now.” The technician told us.
Bruce looked like he didn’t want to turn around, but I took hold of his arm, turning him.
“We said it was going to be a surprise, remember?” I said.
“I know.” He laughed. “I’m just curious.”
He gently squeezed my hand, softly brushing his thumb over my skin.
“Alright. Everything looks really good.”
I looked back at the technician, taking the wipe she handed me to get the gel off my stomach. “I thought I would be showing more by now.”
“Your baby is on the smaller side for twenty weeks, but still a perfectly healthy size. You could be someone who just doesn’t show very much, or you could suddenly start showing any day now. But what I’m seeing right now is perfectly fine. Try not to worry about it too much.” She comfortingly pat my shoulder, then left the room.
“What’s worrying you?” Bruce asked.
I pulled my shirt back down, and put my jacket on. “Nothing in particular. Just all of this.”
“Come on, let’s get to the car, and then we can chat.” He wrapped his arm around me, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.
As we got into the car, I remembered a couple of things we hadn’t discussed yet. I was about to say something, but then I felt a strange fluttering in my stomach.
“Are you alright?” He reached for my hand, seeing the look on my face.
I nodded. “I think… I think I just felt the baby move.”
“That’s great!” He leaned over to kiss me. “I know you’re worrying about a lot of things right now. If you focus on the positives, it will be easier to deal with the worries. What’s bothering you?”
“I’m starting to show, and we’ve been lucky that no one has noticed so far. We need to work out how we’re going to announce it.”
He started the car, driving off. “We don’t have to announce it at all, if you don’t want. You could just not hide it, and we just discuss it when someone asks. It’s our business only, but we’re two people who can’t really do anything in private. So we just keep the discussion about it to a minimum.”
“I guess I didn’t think that this is something we would be able to keep between ourselves at all.” I said, pulling my hair out of its bun.
“We’re never going to be able to do this all in private. But we can give them just enough that they don’t hound us.”
“Do you want me to wake you up when I get back tonight?” Bruce asked, helping me take my shoes off.
I shook my head with a smile. “The way I’ve been sleeping, I’ll probably be awake anyway.”
“Both of you need to get some sleep.” He leaned in, pressing a kiss to my bump.
“Both of us?” I laughed. “The baby sleeps like eighteen hours a day. I’m the one who needs to sleep.”
He stood up, running his fingers through my hair. “I love you. I’ll be back in a few hours.”
“Be safe out there.” I took a sip of water.
He kissed me goodbye, then headed off. I slowly made my way downstairs to find Charlotte, because I really wanted tacos for dinner. I found her in the kitchen, and she smiled when she saw me coming.
“Tacos again?” She asked.
“Yes please. Never thought I would crave them so much, but here we are.”
She opened the fridge, gathering ingredients. “Your mother used to dip pickles in chocolate ice cream when she was pregnant with you. Making tacos every couple of nights is the least weird of cravings I’ve dealt with. These chairs aren’t good for your back, do you want me to bring dinner to you in the lounge?”
“That would be amazing.” I took the soda water she offered, and was about to head to the lounge, but then I felt my nose start to bleed.
Before I could even react, Charlotte sat me down on one of the stools and clamped her fingers over the bridge of my nose.
“Put your hand here, and tilt your head forward slightly.” She told me.
I did as I was told, watching as she went to get me some tissues. Anxiety was feeling my mind, as I tried to work out whether this was a bad sign, if something was wrong with me or the baby.
“Breathe through your mouth.” She said, holding a tissue to my nose. “This happened to her too. As long as the bleeding stops after about ten minutes, it’s nothing to worry about.”
I nodded, breathing in deep. It wasn’t easy, since the position of my baby had started putting pressure on my lungs, but I did my best. We sat there for a few minutes, but eventually I pulled my fingers away. Thankfully my nose didn’t start bleeding again, and I sighed.
“Feeling better?” She asked.
“Mostly. It’s beginning to feel like my whole body is falling apart.”
She laughed, gently squeezing my arm. “Go upstairs and have a bath, I’ll bring dinner up to you in about an hour.”
I headed upstairs to the bathroom, starting the warm water running. While I waited for the bath to fill, I wiped the blood from my face, and tried not to cry. This whole process was a lot to deal with, and it felt like every day brought a new symptom, a new issue.
As I sank into the water, my phone began to buzz. It was a message from Bruce, which was surprising, because he should have been out already.
Joker escaped. If you need me to come home and make sure you’re alright, I can.
I nearly dropped my phone into the water, panic quickly setting in. I had to get myself under control, not just for myself, but also for my baby. Closing my eyes I took a deep breath in, then exhaled it.
I’ll be okay. Just come home safe. I love you.
I woke up with a bit of a headache, feeling that strange fluttery sensation in my belly again. Though I was comforted to know my baby was still moving around in there, I was still worried about a lot of things.
Lying there, on my side, I tried to get back to sleep. It was one of those times where the more I thought about getting to sleep, the harder it was, and in the end I just gave up.
It was three am, and Bruce wasn’t back yet, so I threw on some warm clothes and slowly made my way down to the cave. The walk was safer now, with proper lights and a fixed path, so I wasn’t concerned about falling anymore.
As I stepped into the cave, I found Bruce pulling his shirt back on. He saw me coming and ran over, pulling me into a hug.
“Are you alright?” He asked. “What are you doing here?”
“I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. I thought I would come see if you’d gotten home yet.” I hesitated, wrapping my arms around him. “I was just feeling really worried, that’s all.”
“Let’s get back upstairs, and then we can talk about it.” He kissed my cheek, then walked me back up to the bedroom.
He sat down at the head of the bed, and I sat in front of him, between his legs. Leaning back against him, I felt comforted when he wrapped his arms around me and rested his hands on my bump.
“What’s worrying you right now?” He asked, lifting the bottom of my shirt so he could trace circles on my skin.
“I’m just scared about being a mother. I wish Mum was here to help me.” I took a breath. “I guess even people who plan for a baby are never really that prepared either.”
“I think everyone panics a little during a massive life change like this.” He kissed my shoulder. “I’m scared too. We’re not exactly going to be a traditional family, so we’ll just have to make our own path.”
“What if our child doesn’t like us? What if we’re bad parents?” I was nearly crying again.
He ran his fingers through my hair. “If that happens, we’ll deal with it. But there’s nothing we can do right now, except take one step at a time.”
I nodded, turning to face him. “I’m sorry. I’ve been so focused on me, I haven’t been checking in on you as much as I should have.”
“Don’t worry about me, Eve.” He squeezed my hand. “I’ll tell you if anything is wrong. But I want you to focus on yourself right now. Get some sleep, I’ll get changed and join you.”
I did as I was told, pulling off my extra clothes than slipping under the blankets. Sleeping on my side was far more comfortable now, but I had to put a pillow between my knees. I knew I would probably need more pillows as I got bigger, but I was trying not to think about that yet.
“Are you comfortable enough?” Bruce asked, climbing into bed behind me and wrapping his arm around my waist.
“As comfortable as it gets right now.” I whispered sleepily. “It would be nice to get a full eight hours without waking up, but I’ll just have to keep napping, I guess.”
He softly ran his fingers over my bump, holding me close. “I don’t want you to ever feel bad about napping during our time together or anything like that. I will happily lie here and read while you sleep.”
“I love you. Thank you for watching out for me.” I managed to say, before drifting off to sleep.
