You have one more chance. I typed in the email. Meet me tonight, or I will release the photos and all your financial details.
While I waited for a reply, I ran a cool bath. It was a really warm day, and Bruce was busy working, so I was just going to enjoy some time to myself.
While the water was running, I grabbed some chocolates, a bottle of wine and a glass from the kitchen. Putting everything down on the shelf, stripped off and stepped into the bath.
As the cool water seeped into my bones, I turned on the TV and settled down to watch something. But before I could even relax, my phone rang. I was so tempted to ignore it, to just put my phone on silent, but it was Bruce and I just couldn’t ignore him.
“I hope you have something important to say, since you’re interrupting my bath.” I said quietly, pressing my foot against the end of the bath.
“It was important, but now I’d rather hear about your bath.” He laughed cheekily. “Are you naked right now?”
I ran my fingers through my hair. “That is the traditional way people take baths. Maybe you can join me next time. Now, why did you actually call?”
“Dinner at mine tomorrow?” There was a moment of silence, and I heard a door shut. “Alfred said he’ll make your favourite.”
“That sounds amazing. What should I wear?”
I could hear the smile on his face when he spoke again. “Something sexy, and definitely easy to take off.”
“Mmm… I have just the dress in mind. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Wait, before you hang up. How naked are you right now?”
I laughed, reaching for my glass of wine. “I’m very naked. Just lying here, with bubbles and wine.”
He groaned. “I wish I was there with you.”
“If you be nice, maybe we can do this tomorrow.” I whispered. “Can I go back to enjoying my bath? Or do you want to keep hearing about how naked I am?”
“As much as I would love to hear about your body some more, I do need to get back to what I was doing. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He hung up, leaving me to enjoy my bath.
I put my phone on the shelf, turning up the TV. Finally I could just lie back and relax. I spent nearly an hour in there, just watching TV and drinking wine. But sadly, I eventually had to get out and return to real life.
Once I got dressed, I opened my laptop to check my emails. There was one, in the burner account, from the mayor. It contained one word. No.
“Well then, Mayor Hill. We’ll do this the hard way.” I remote accessed the computer at my safe house, downloading all the evidence I’d collected.
Combining it all into a folder, I sent it to every tabloid and newspaper in Gotham. I knew they would eat it up. But I had to be patient, because it could take a while for them to get through everything.
“Alfred, thank you so much for dinner.” I handed him my plate.
“It’s good to have you back, Eve.” He said, cleaning off the table. “It’s been very quiet here without you.”
I watched him leave, then turned to Bruce. “I seem to remember something about you joining me in a bath.”
“You know, I do remember saying something like that.” He stood, holding out his hand to me. “Are you interested?”
I took his hand, laughing as he pulled me in for a kiss. “I’m very interested.”
He led me up to his bedroom, stopping to close the door behind us. I sat down on the edge of his bed, leaning back on my hands. Kneeling down in front of me, he unbuckled my shoes and gently pulling them off.
“It was very hard to get back to work after we spoke yesterday.” He whispered, pressing a kiss to my knee.
“I bet.” I softly pushed him away. “Wait here. I’ll get the bath ready.”
I headed into the bathroom, closing the door behind me. I started the bath running, carefully stripping down. Opening my bag, I pulled out the candles I’d brought. I placed them around the room and then lit them. Turning off the lights, I plugged my phone into the stereo to play some soft music, then climbed into the bath.
“You can come in now.” I called, leaning my arms on the side of the bath.
The door opened, and he walked in, already shirtless.
“What’s all this?” He asked, surprised.
“I thought that since you organised that romantic picnic, that I should do something to make this more romantic.”
He stripped off the rest of his clothing, climbing in and sitting down behind me. Wrapping his arms around my body, he gently pulled me back against him.
“Will you tell me something about your travels?” I asked, leaning my head on his shoulder.
“What do you want to know?” He softly brushed his fingers over my stomach and along the side of my thigh.
I closed my eyes, just relaxing against his warm skin. “Where did you go?”
“Lots of places.” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “I travelled around Asia, visiting different communities. Then I hiked the Himalayas.”
“What were you looking for?”
“I didn’t know, when I first ran. I just did it without thinking. But once I started actually travelling, I realised I was still afraid.”
I turned to face him, wrapping my arms around my knees as I sat between his legs. “Afraid? Of what?”
“Of losing everything I had left.” He reached out and took my hand. “Of not being able to protect the people I care about. So I went searching for a way to deal with my fear.”
“Did you find it?”
He nodded. “It took a long time, but I found it. Along with meeting a lot of people.”
“Were many of those people… women?” I asked, giving him a sly smile. “Anyone I should be jealous of?”
“There were some.” He pressed a kiss to my hand. “But nothing long term. I was never in one place long enough for an actual relationship. And none of them were you.”
I pulled him close, kissing him gently. “You don’t need to explain, Bruce.”
“What about you?” He traced my lips with his thumb. “Is there anyone that I might have to fight off in order to keep your affection?”
“None worth talking about.” I took his hand, holding it to my heart. “I didn’t date a lot when I was in England. I was trying to just get through college.”
“You really didn’t like school. I just can’t imagine you as a hard-working student.” He laughed.
I blushed under his gaze. “I… learnt a lot in England. It wasn’t easy, but I even surprised myself.”
“You’ve always surprised me.” He pulled me to him, sending water splashing over the edge of the bath. “Running off between classes, going to strange places when you were bored. If you hadn’t dragged me off on adventures, I probably would have gotten myself into worse trouble.”
We stayed in the bath for another hour or so, just talking about the time we were apart. It was the first time since I’d left Gotham that we’d properly talked, and it was nice. By the time we got out, I was feeling like everything was right how it should be.
“Do you want my shirt to sleep in?” He asked, as I pulled my underwear back on.
“Always.” I laughed, taking it from him and buttoning it up. “You often roll away from me in your sleep, and this way I still feel you.”
He picked me up, gently carrying me over to the bed. I checked the time, noticing it was nearly nine.
“The news is about to be on.” I said, handing over the TV remote.
“You don’t mind, do you?” He asked. “I know it’s probably a bit of a downer after a nice night, but…”
I shushed him, softly kissing his cheek. “It’s fine. I can read while you watch.”
He wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pressing a kiss to my damp hair. I snuggled up to him, opening my book on my phone.
“An anonymous source has leaked photos of Mayor Hill and a previously unknown woman on what appears to be a date.” The news presenter began. “We received these photos this morning, and have since identified the woman as Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone.”
I felt every muscle in my body tense up. I suddenly realised that I’d made a really terrible mistake. All I had to hold on to was that maybe they couldn’t track me down.
“Are you alright?” Bruce asked, softly rubbing my arm.
“Hmm?” I looked up at him. “Oh, just a tense part in my book. I get a little too engaged in the story, you know? I might stop reading for now.” Lying down, I rested my head in his lap. “I’ll just lie here until the news is done.”
He ran his fingers through my hair, gently brushing it off my face. “Just a few more minutes, I promise.”
I nodded, closing my eyes. I was beginning to realise that every moment I spent with him was always exactly what I needed. He knew me, understood me, and I loved that. But, that meant that eventually I was going to have to tell him the truth. I was terrified to tell him, because I was certain he would hate me, or turn me in to the police.
For now though, I was just going to enjoy lying there, with his hands softly drifting over my skin. I didn’t even care that he was watching the news, I was happy just being there with him.
