They were talking on the phone one Friday night, after they had gone out to the movies with their friends. Reggie mentioned to Betty that he had to go away to Colorado for a week with his father.
"What for?" Betty asked.
"Oh, just to go see some family and hang out together. Dad said I could look at some schools around there."
"Oh, Reggie, I'm gonna miss you!"
" I'll miss you too, babe."
"When are you going?"
"Um... from the twelfth to the eighteenth I think. I'll have to check on it."
"Wow, you get to miss school. Hey that's the week Archie comes back from his vacation. You're gonna miss him!"
"Oh no. I'd better stay here then!" he teased.
"Come on, Reggie" she laughed. "He's our friend. You don't feel jealous do you?"
"Nah, I'm just kiddin' you."
"Good. Is your mother going with you?"
"No, she’s staying here."
"Oh, so it’s man-to-man bonding time." she teased.
He laughed. "Yeah, we're gonna go fishing, and camping, and go to some topless bars..."
"Uh, I think not!" she commanded, laughing.
"You know I'm just kiddin'," he laughed.
****
Reggie left a tearful Betty to go away with his father for a week. Archie had returned from his vacation and called to ask Betty if he could come over. When he arrived, they ended up watching a movie with her parents.
"Oh Betty! Where's Reggie?" Her mother was teasing and trying to embarrass her. She felt a bit strange with Archie there. She would never cheat on Reggie, but still, she felt tingly inside, as if there was still some chemistry between Archie and her. He didn't go out with Veronica anymore.
I wonder if he regrets our break-up. I bet he didn’t think I’d be so serious with Reggie.
She couldn’t seem to help these thoughts, as if she was gloating over her happiness with Reggie, and Archie still being single. She was actually tingling with pleasure.
After the movie was over, her parents retreated to their bedroom, and Archie and Betty went to hers. Nancy called and they talked for a while Archie looked at all her pictures and photo albums. Finally she hung up, turning to him on the bed.
"What are you looking at?"
"This is a good picture of you," he told her, pointing to one picture.
She looked at it. "Oh, yeah, Reggie took that picture at the Country Club dance last year." She felt bad after she said it, though really she didn't have a reason to. After all, it was just one dance of many she and Reggie had been to. Of course, if things had turned out a bit differently she and Archie might have gone together instead.
He nodded, looking at it intently. He looked over, and gave her a quick smile.
She smiled back, picking up a photo album of her own to look over.
"Your room is like a shrine to Mantle. He’s everywhere in here. How many albums are there of pictures of you tow? Damn, what would have happened if we had never broken up? Would my pictures still be all around?" he asked her lightly, but Betty could tell though that under his tone he was dead serious, but only trying to seem nonchalant.
"Hmm, I don't know. I can’t imagine anything else but being with Reggie." she answered vaguely.
"You probably don't ever regret it though," he said, still not looking at her.
She shrugged. "Well, I wouldn't say I don't regret what happened between you and I, but, well, I don't know."
Why did I say that? She did know the answer. But she was trying to spare his feelings; she didn't want him to be hurt by saying she was glad they had broken up. She was head over heels in love with Reggie. Archie had never treated her as half as well as Reggie did.
Archie looked over at her again. By now, both of them were lying on their stomachs on the bed facing each other.
"I regret it every day," he told her quietly.
She stared down at the pictures in front of her.
"Really?" she asked him.
"Yeah, sure," he said.
"Well, you know it actually worked out for the best," she said.
He looked back down. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
She shrugged, unable to make eye contact with him as well.
Why was it so uncomfortable?
"Oh well," he said. "I guess you don't care."
She looked over. "No, Archie! I do care!"
"No you don't," he muttered.
"Archie! Come on, don't be like that. I do care. You know, I care as a good friend."
He looked at her, his face only inches from hers.
"Really?" he asked.
I should sit up or something, she thought. But she didn't. "Yeah, really." she said, giving him a smile.
He smiled back, looking her face over, and then leaned in.
Pull away, she commanded herself, but she didn't. It happened too fast; before she knew it their lips were touching. An electric tingle shot through her body from the kiss, and with her eyes closed, for a moment she didn't think it was wrong at all. Then he opened his mouth against hers gently, and she jerked away, her eyes flying open. He turned away from her.
"Sorry," he mumbled.
She didn't say anything, just lay there. Her mind was spinning.
"I'm sorry. It just happened. I didn't mean to kiss you," he told her, still looking at the wall.
"I know you have a boyfriend..."
"Yeah, I have Reggie," she murmured. For a quick moment, Reggie didn't seem so invincible.
They lay there for a minute, neither saying anything.
Then Archie jumped up.
"All right!" he said. "Okay, now I can run away and we can both feel really guilty and really shitty forever. Or we can just stay friends and laugh about it. Which one is it?"
She smiled, nodding. She felt relieved that he wasn't going to get mad and run away. But she still felt horrible inside, and she knew Archie was probably upset too, but trying to act like he didn't care. She felt grateful for that.
"All right, it sounds good to me. Sound good to you?" he asked.
She laughed. "Sounds good to me!"
"Cool." He leaned in and gave her a huge hug. "So, our evening isn't ruined?"
"No, of course not! The night's still young!"
They both laughed but Betty still felt awkward, but she knew he was right. It hadn't meant anything, and she hadn't cheated on Reggie because she hadn't kissed him: he had kissed her, and she had pulled away.
They talked for a while, laughing and joking about people they knew and various things they had done while apart for the summer. Soon they got into discussing personal things like their family life, and Betty slipped into her relationship with Reggie; Their arguments and how great the making up was, and sweet things he had done for her. Archie talked about a girl that was in his History class that he really liked, but how she seemed as if she was hung up on another guy who didn't feel the same. Betty gave him advice, and they lay on her bed talking for a long while.
Finally, her father looked into the room. "Betty? When is Archie leaving so I can close up the house?"
She looked at Archie. "Um, he's probably gonna be here awhile longer."
Her father raised an eyebrow.
"Dad!" Betty said. "Come on, don't worry about it! I'm not gonna cheat on Reggie!" She rolled her eyes.
"All right. I’m sure glad to hear it," he told them.
He left and they laughed. They talked for a while longer, until they both began to yawn.
"Don't worry, we’ll hang out again soon. I’ll call you.” Betty told him, getting ready to show him out. She knew she had been flirting with him.
Maybe I’m just trying to prove how much willpower I have and I’m over my Archie obsession.
"Oh, well, as long as you can control yourself young lady!"
They both laughed, Archie was getting ready to leave. He turned to give her a hug when she froze.
She saw Reggie coming through the window. There she was in her room with Archie hugging her.
OMG! What if Reggie thought...?
Reggie stood frozen and slack jawed as he stared at the sight of them embracing.
"Reggie! You're back!" Betty exclaimed, trying to sound excited, releasing Archie and running towards him as he entered her room.
God, this looks bad! He knows I would never cheat on him, didn't he?
But Reggie was only staring at Archie, still speechless.
"Baby, I thought you weren't coming back until tomorrow night," Betty chattered on. She still tried to sound cheerful, not like someone who had done something wrong.
Reggie looked at her for a second longer, slowly walking away until he got to the stairway when he ran down the stairs and out the front door.
"REGGIE, WAIT!" Betty cried, almost falling on the floor as she chased after him. She ran out into the cold night, barefoot and barelegged, after him.
She reached him before he got out of her driveway and to his car on the street, where he always parked when he came over at night. She grabbed his arms, trying to stop his brisk walking.
“Reggie! Reggie, stop!" He kept walking, pushing her away. "Will you just STOP?!?" she cried, jumping in front of him and trying to hold him still.
"Reggie," she yelled. "We didn't do anything! It's not what it looks like!"
He shook his head. "Get out of my face, Betty!" he told her angrily, pushing her away from him as he kept walking.
"No!" she cried, grabbing him again and pulling on his shirt as she planted her feet on the driveway. He dragged her, and her ankle twisted, skinning her heel on the blacktop. She let out a yelp, then yanked him back as hard as she could.
"Listen to me!" she cried. "If we have a relationship, then you will fucking listen to
me!" He pulled away, turning around and walking backward, shaking his head at her.
"I guess we don't have a relationship!" he snapped. "You wanna fuck him? Go ahead!" he stopped, livid and hurt so much he felt as if he would explode.
She shook her head, crying.
"Well you can go on finish fucking him!" he yelled. "Sorry I interrupted you. I'm leaving!"
"We didn't do anything!" she screamed. "Reggie, no! Don’t leave like this!" she sobbed, running out into the street after him, throwing her arms around his waist as he fumbled for his keys. She turned him around roughly and grabbed his face, making her look at him. He clenched his jaw, and a tear slowly rolled down each of his cheeks.
"I know it looks bad, but we didn't do anything!" she told him, her hands enveloping his face.
"He's my friend, he came over. Nothing more, okay. Nothing! Look Reggie," she begged, pulling up her T-shirt.
"Underwear! Look, I’m wearing underwear..." she whispered.
He stared down at her, then pulled away and leaned against his car. He wiped his eyes.
"You promise me, you didn't do anything?" He wanted very much to believe her. He loved her so much and he didn’t know if he could do without her.
"I promise! I swear nothing happened. I love you, Reg."
"Nothing?!? You didn't so much as kiss him?!?"
She dropped her eyes, looking down at his hand which she clutched in her own. She didn't answer him, her mind spinning.
I should just lie, but, if he found out, he... She could lie, but he would know.
He stared at her in disbelief, then pushed her hand away.
"You did fucking kiss him!" he said fiercely.
"Well, I, no..." she began. "No, he kissed me!"
"Oh FUCK!" he shouted, opening the car door angrily.
"No, Reggie!" she cried. "No! He kissed me! I told him NO! REGGIE, STAY!" she screamed as he got in his car.
He turned to face her. "Get away from me, Betty!" he told her. "Get the fuck away from me!" he yelled at her, starting the car and slamming the door shut.
Betty banged on the door, crying, "Reggie! I love you! Stop! We didn't do anything!" She leaned on the car.
His car jerked into reverse and she stumbled forward, nearly falling. "We didn't do anything!" she screamed, but it was no use. He turned around, angrily, and sped away.
Sobbing, she sank to the ground. "We didn't do anything!" she cried, grabbing the dirt and gravel in her fists. "I love you!" she whispered, the gravel digging into the bare skin of her shins, hurting her.
She pushed down harder with her legs, making the pain stronger. She sobbed, her throat swelling larger, it seemed, with each one.
"Betty!" said Archie. "Come on, it's okay!" he told her, dragging her up. He had put his clothes on, and kept out of it as he watched them from her driveway. "It's okay!"
She shook her head. "It’s not okay! Reggie hates me!" she sobbed, as he pulled her back on her property.
"He doesn't! He's just mad! " Archie whispered, his arm around her.
"Yes he does!' she screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Shh! Your parents will hear us!" he told her. But her parents had already been awakened, the door opening as her father peered out, in his pajamas.
"What's going on?" Mr. Cooper demanded.
Betty was still sobbing, unable to answer. Archie just shrugged.
"Betty, what is going on?" Mr. Cooper asked again.
They walked in through her front door, the heat encompassing them and the light shocking their eyes.
Betty pushed Archie away, covering her eyes with her forearm and crying.
"What happened? Why are you all dirty Betty?" her father asked again, alarmed at Betty’s condition..
She was on the couch, whimpering as if in shock.
Her father looked at Archie.
Archie shrugged. "Um, Reggie came over and I was in her room, and he freaked out and he, um, is sort of upset and he thinks she cheated on him with me."
"Betty!" her father said. "Archie should have been in the living room. What was Reggie doing here in the middle of the night anyway?"
"Dad, shut up!" she yelled at him. "Just shut up!" she whispered. Her father looked at her, astonished that Betty would speak to him this way. She had never spoken to her parents in such a way before.
"We didn't do anything but he thinks we did." Archie offered.
Her dad tried to comfort her, rubbing her shoulders.
"Honey, it will be okay."
She shook her head, and her mother came out, demanding to know what was happening.
"Reggie came over and Archie was in her room, and he thinks something happened between them. Nothing did, did it?" he asked Archie, who shook his head frantically.
"Oh, shit," said her mom, sitting down next to Betty on the couch and hugging her.
"I know, but it will be okay."
Betty sobbed. "I love him, Mom," she whispered. "I love Reggie so much. Now he hates me!"
"No, I-I think he's just upset," said her mom, looking at her husband.
Betty kept crying, and her mom comforted her for a while, until she stopped, her face sore.
"It'll be okay, hon," her mom told her. "When he calms down he'll listen to you."
Betty nodded. "I hope so," she whispered.
"It will be!" Archie said. "Come on Betty, smile!"
She gave him a weak smile.
"Alright. Don't worry about it. Maybe we should go back to bed," suggested her dad, tired.
"I can't sleep," mumbled Betty.
"Come on Betty, go to bed. We’ll talk tomorrow.” said Archie.
Archie left and Mrs. Cooper was hugging and trying to comfort her, even though she was appalled knowing her baby was having sex.
Betty lay back on her bed, staring at the bright light of the moon through her window, willing Reggie to come in, when her cell phone rang. She brightened until she saw it was Archie and not Reggie.
"I don't think he'll forgive me," she whispered when she answered the phone.
"Betty, you didn't do anything wrong. Hey, I just thought of something: you didn’t tell him I kissed you, did you?"
She sighed sadly. "Yeah... But he thinks we kissed each other. I told him I didn’t kiss you back, but he didn’t believe me."
"I'm so sorry Betty. It's all my fault”
"No, don't say that. It's not your fault. You should not have been in my room. It’s my fault." she muttered.
“I’ll talk to him.” Archie offered.
“No, I have to make this right. I only have myself to blame. You should not have been in my room. I’m a fool.”
"Well, you know what? If it's not my fault--and I know it's not your fault--then excuse my saying so, but I think it's Reggie's fault!"
"No it isn’t! How did you come up with that?" she gasped.
"Yes, I think it is!" he told her. "He is so damn quick to judge. I mean, he's a good guy and all," he added. "But he should have stayed and heard you out."
“Yes, he should have trusted me.” She nodded, still staring at the ceiling.
"I'm serious. I know it must have looked bad, but you're his girlfriend and he should trust you."
"No!" she told him. "It's still not-his-fault! You can't just blame Reggie! I don’t know what I would have done if I had caught him the way he caught me!"
"I'm not blaming him! It's just that, if someone is at fault for the way you're feeling now, it's him! Because you didn't do anything wrong! Unless of course," he added. "It's my fault and you think so."
"No, Archie! I don’t think it’s your fault. It’s mine." she sighed. "He was so upset," she murmured, wiping away at the tears that were falling down her face.
"He was crying, Archie. He's never cried before. I know how much I hurt him."
"Oh, Reggie cried?" Archie asked her in disbelief.
She nodded. "Yeah..." Tears were falling even more at the sight of the big strong Mantle hurt because of her.
"See, if he didn't love you, he wouldn't be so upset."
She nodded again, wiping her eyes. "I know...he loved me before, now I don’t know. He feels like I betrayed him."
"It did look bad, Bets, but he'll calm down. He's just mad, and he'll realize what a dork he was and come crawling back."
"I don't want him to come crawling back, Archie." she whispered. "I just want him back." She started to cry even harder.
"Betty, he loves you. And you love him. If you didn't, I know you wouldn't have been able to resist charming old Archie, now huh?"
She smiled, and then laughed. "Yeah, I do love him very much."
"And he knows it. And the thought of you with another guy really upsets him, so be happy that he cares so much. Even if he was being a dork."
“Thanks Arch. I gotta go. Good night. And Reggie’s not a dork!”
She hung up and cried herself to sleep. She wanted Reggie, jerk, dork, whatever he was.
***
When Betty woke up the next morning, she felt like crying again. She lay on her bed, miserable.
Her mother came in, bringing in her clean laundry.
"How are you doing, Honey?" she asked.
Betty shrugged sadly. Her mother sat down on the bed. "Did you hear from Reggie yet?"
"No." Betty told her.
“Did you two break up?” Alice Cooper tried to keep the hopeful note out of her voice. She loved Reggie, but was terrified that they were just too serious.
"I don't know, Mom. Probably, so. I don't think he wants me anymore," she whispered, starting to cry.
"Oh Honey, don’t cry." soothed her mother. "Reggie's making a big mistake. He'll realize it.and call you to say he's sorry that he over-reacted."
Betty shrugged, then shook her head, still crying.
"I'm sure he was upset that he saw Archie with you in the middle of the night. It did look pretty bad, didn't it?"
Betty nodded.
"So he just stormed off. He'll realize it and come back to you, I'm sure. If he doesn't then he's losing out."
Betty didn't say anything.
"Dear, why was he coming over here so late? How did he get into the house?"
Betty shrugged her shoulders, her heart racing.
Here it comes!
"Reggie should call before he shows up at someone's house, especially in the middle of the night." Alice, added.
Facing away from her mother, Betty rolled her eyes. Her heart was still pounding in her ears. There was an awkward silence, and Betty knew her mother wasn't stupid.
"Um, I think he came back early and just wanted to surprise me, Mom."
"Well he should have waited until the next day," she said. Alice paused. "Betty, exactly how serious are you two?"
"What do you mean?" Betty asked, playing dumb. "We love each other." Oh good answer Betty! she thought. It sets us up so well.
"I mean, if he was coming over here in the middle of the night, he was sneaking over here, was he coming over at that time to sleep with you?"
Betty didn't answer.
Her mother paused. "Betty, have you two had sex?" she asked.
"Mom!" Betty groaned, exasperatingly. But she knew her mother wouldn't stop her questioning now.
"Betty, I have a right to know. What have you two been doing?"
"Don't worry about it Mom," she muttered. "I'm not gonna get pregnant and I'm not gonna get any diseases."
"You are going to get pregnant!" her mother told her angrily. "You've slept with him, haven't you?"
"Yes, we have, okay?" And I have great fucking orgasms too, Betty thought sarcastically.
Her mother didn't say anything. At that moment Betty didn't give a damn anymore about hiding the details about her sex life.
Finally her mother spoke again. "We didn't raise you like that Betty."
"Oh, like what?" Betty snapped.
"Like this! Plus you're too young and immature to be having sex!"
"Oh, please! You always tell me that I'm so mature for my age. Now I'm too immature to do something. Make up your mind." Betty felt bad because she never spoke to her mother like that before.
Mrs. Cooper didn't say anything, just looked at her daughter on the bed for a while.
"Well," she said quietly. "Are you using condoms also?"
Betty shook her head. "No, I’m on the pill, remember? And we were both virgins."
Her mother’s voice wavered as she spoke. "They were supposed to regulate your cycles, not give you the green light to have sex!! You should have told me!" She burst into tears .Betty groaned silently. She hated it when her mother cried.
"Why?" Betty asked. "You would have just gotten mad. Like you're doing now! See, you don't understand."
"I do understand! You should tell me something like this!"
"What exactly would it have helped?" Betty demanded sullenly.
Her mother just sniffled.
"Mom, it doesn't matter now, okay? We already did it. I'm not a slut, and neither is he. We were in love," her voice choked on those words "and we waited a long time, okay? I don't regret doing it one bit, all right?"
Her mother continued to sniffle. "Well, it just makes me feel left out. You’re growing up so fast."
Betty looked over at her mother finally. "Mom, do you really want to be involved with my sex life? I don't think you do, because I don't want to be involved in yours!"
Betty’s mother didn't know what to say to that, and just looked down at her daughter. Finally Betty started to cry again.
"That's the least of my problems right now," she sobbed. "Now he hates me, so that part of my life is done!"
Her mother patted her on the back awkwardly, not knowing what else to say.
By the following evening Betty had made up her mind to go see Reggie. He had avoided her in school and refused to come to the phone when she called his house. She gave up calling his cell after three days of trying. Betty got in her car, hoping she could make everything all right between them again. She remembered when Reggie had taught her how to drive, and how frustrated they had both been, him especially. But he had still let her learn on his car, and had tried to be so patient with her.
But now she was scared to death, and she wanted to turn around and go back.
What if he was sure he didn't want me anymore? What if he never believes me and it’s over between us? What if he has a girl over there?
She felt numb as she rang the doorbell. Usually she would have walked in, but now she was too nervous to just enter, not knowing what his reaction to her being there would be.
She looked around while she stood on the doorstep, staring at his car in the driveway. She heard voices, and then the door opened. His father, Rick opened it.
"Come in, Betty”, Rick said, looking at her as though she were crazy because she never rang the doorbell when she came over.
She came in slowly, looking around for Reggie.
"He's in his room," Rick told her, walking back to the living room.
Betty was left alone in the front hall, and she slowly walked towards his bedroom. She heard his stereo. She knocked on the door several times before she heard the music die down and Reggie loudly say, "Come in!"
She opened the door slowly and walked in. Reggie looked at her then looked away. She closed the door behind her as he turned his stereo back up.
"Please turn your stereo down," she told him underneath the loud music. He ignored her, and she
repeated her request. Finally she walked over to his stereo and turned it off. He still wouldn't look at her, just stared at the ceiling.
"Reggie," she said, her voice shaking. "If we have a relationship, you really need to listen to me."
He ignored her.
"You will listen to me, or else you will lose me. Is that what you want?"
His eyes met hers, but he didn't answer.
"I want to tell you what happened," she said, her voice slightly pleading.
"I already know what happened." he told her simply. "You cheated on me, and that's good enough for me."
"I didn't cheat on you!"
"Yeah you did, I saw you two with my own eyes." he said disgustedly, looking away.
"I didn't cheat on you! Reggie, I told you, nothing happened!"
"Oh, except you kissed him. You kissed Archie. You want him again. That‘s cheating in my book, alright?"
“Reggie, why won't you listen to me?"
He shrugged. "Maybe I don't wanna listen to you. It's black and white, so it doesn't matter."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want a girlfriend who cheats on me. And with her ex too. That's fucking bullshit. I don't forgive that. I’ve never looked at anyone else since we’ve been together."
"Well you don't need to forgive me, because I did nothing wrong! I’m not looking at Archie either. He tried to kiss me and I stopped him."
He rolled his eyes, looking away again and staring at the wall.
"Reggie," she said gently, trying not to cry. "I love you. I would never cheat on you. Now what happened is that Archie and I was talking, and hanging out, okay? Are you
listening?"
"No."
"Well listen!" she cried. He looked up.
"We were hanging out, and he leaned in and kissed me. And I pulled away. End of story."
Reggie paused. "Well, why the hell was he in your bedroom?"
"We didn't do anything. He just came over and I didn't really care if he was in my room. 'Cause I wasn't gonna do anything with him."
"Well why did he kiss you?"
"I don't know why! He felt really bad."
"Well, did you feel bad?" he asked sullenly. "Maybe you didn't. How long was this kiss, anyway?"
She sighed, hurt still. "It was fast! It wasn't a real kiss, nothing like how you and I kiss!" she told him, whining.
"Here, let me show. You be me and I'll be Archie, and I'll show you!"
He rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah?" he asked her. "I'll be you? Okay, here I go! " He laid down on the bed and spread his legs wide and lifted them up in the air.
“Come here Archie, let’s fuck!” Reggie said in a falsetto voice, mimicking Betty.
Betty was horrified. She couldn't breathe, nor move as she stared at him. Her jaw had dropped, and her eyes filled with tears.
Reggie didn't say anything, just looked at her staring at him, his legs still up in the air like that. Betty turned away from him, her hand on her cheek as though he had hit her. She heard him stand up, but she didn't turn around. He reached for her.
"I was kidding Betty!" she heard him say softly. "I was just kiddin'..." He touched her on the shoulder, trying to show her he didn't mean it.
She spun around, and pushed him away. Tears dripped down her cheeks. He came towards her again, trying to hug her, but she slapped his face.
"Fuck!," he muttered, shocked, his hand went to his cheek.
He moved towards her again, and she jumped, flinching as she threw her arm in front of her face to protect herself.
He stared at her in disbelief, gulping.
"No, Betty..." he whispered. He shook his head. "I wasn't going to hit you! I wasn't!"
She lowered her arm, staring at him as she backed away.
"No!" he told her. "No! I wasn't going to hit you! I would never hit you!" he pleaded.
"Don't you believe me?"
"I hate you," she whispered, turning around and walking out.
"No," he whispered. "No, I wasn't going to hit you. I don’t hit girls, you know that!!" he cried, going after her. She broke into a run as she got down the hall, and he chased her, catching up with her as she fumbled with the doorknob.
"Betty, come on! I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" he begged, trying to hug her.
She struggled with him, trying to push him away, before she turned around and thrust her knee up into his groin.
"Ohhahhh!" he groaned, doubling over from the blow.
"Don't you fucking touch me!" she told him, shaking.
He gasped, gritting his teeth from the pain. "Don't you ever fucking touch me again!" she yelled as she flew to her car.
She opened the door and ran out, slamming the door in his face.
"Oh fuck!," he gasped, knowing what he had done was really bad.
"Shit!" He leaned against the door, and the tears started to fall. He sobbed, forcing himself to stand up and go back into his house.
"What did you do to her Reggie?" asked Rick from the kitchen, staring at him as he entered.
Reggie shook his head, embarrassed that he was crying, and went back to his room, collapsing on his bed. He gasped as he cried, his pillow wet beneath his cheeks.
Reggie sobbed, feeling like a first class jerk, remembering the stricken look on Betty’s face after his actions. He might as well kicked a whole basket of newborn puppies, he felt so low.
“Babe, I’m so sorry! Why do I do these things to you?”
He hadn't meant to hurt her of course, he never did. He just let his anger and hurt get the best of him.
“That’s me, Reggie Mantle, the asshole. Act first, think later.”
He had planned on calling her and calmly telling her that he didn't think it was right for her ex-boyfriend to be in her bedroom. He had planned his speech all out. But then she had
surprised him by coming over, and it just happened. He hadn't meant to insinuate that she was a slut. No way did he think Betty Cooper was any sort of whore.
Reggie knew he had blown it big time. He prayed to God that she would forgive him and that she'd take him back.

Betty was lying in bed, asleep, when her answering machine went off. She hadn't heard the phone ring, and was barely aware of it answering her phone, her voice announcing she wasn't home. It was dark, and she could see the red light of her machine glowing bright in the dark. When she played back the messages, she heard the upbeat music from Cher Lloyd’s song ‘Oath’ playing on the machine. They she heard his deep sexy voice, singing the song.
“Betty, I ‘m an asshole and I know I hurt you. Please call me baby. I need you.”
She began to cry, it was her and Reggie's favorite song, where they had each promised each other undying love, no matter what. She sobbed into her pillow. She sat up, holding her pillow to her chest as she gulped for air. She picked up the phone, choking back sobs as she dialed his number.
He heard her voice and blurted out,
Reggie whispered. "I love you, baby. I'm sorry. Please forgive me, just this last time."
"Reggie, why should I? I'm just a fucking whore to you! Remember?"
"No, no! You're not! I don't think that at all. I didn't mean it. I don't know why I did that. I was just mad and jealous. Please, please just know that. I'm sorry, I truly didn't mean it. I just wanted to hurt you as much as you hurt me. I’m a child and an asshole."
She didn't answer him because she was crying and still angry, but knowing deep down that she would forgive him. She loved him too much not to.
"I love you, Bets and I'm sorry I ever thought you would cheat on me. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that."
"You think I'm a slut, Reggie." she repeated in a whisper.
"I don't! Betty, I love you, more than anything. I was just mad. Please?"
"I love you Reggie," she said, still sounding a bit angry.
"I can't stay mad at you, you know that. So why do you do this? I never did anything with him!"
"I know that, babe," he repeated. "I'm so sorry. I don't deserve you. I abuse you."
"Oh, Reggie, you don't abuse me," Betty told him, muttering.
"I do," he whispered. "I don't hit you but I abused you mentally by doing what I did. I saw it on a talk show about mental abuse."
"Oh Reggie," she sighed. "Don't. Don't even think that. You were just mad. Mental abuse is different, so don't even think that."
He didn't answer her.
"I think I saw that talk show too," she said, trying to make him feel better. "It was about some red necks who abused their wives mentally, and then they sleep with their siblings or parents or something..."
That made him laugh.
"See, I forgive you because I love you. And we didn't do anything, I swear we didn't," she persisted.
"I know," he sighed. "It just, you don't understand what it was like, seeing Archie in your room, when I come in to surprise you. I mean, Ohhh God it was a shock," he groaned.
"No, I understand. I thought about what I would do if it would have been the other way around. I would have killed the both of you."
"So I guess I was entitled to my anger. But I still was a jerk, about what I said, and what I did to you," he added. "You're sure you're not pissed still?"
"I guess not. Well maybe a little."
"I love you. I came home early to surprise you."
"Come over now."
"Yeah? Okay, I'll be right over. I love you."
"I love you too."
They hung up, and she lay there on her bed again, happy, each minute seeming like an eternity. While she waited she thought what would happen if he never showed up, having been killed in an accident. Tears welled in her eyes at the thought, and she blinked them back. How could I not
forgive him? I love him so much. She knew he didn't abuse her mentally, and her heart ached that he thought he did.
She was angry at herself for letting Archie into her bedroom. It was mean, to Archie, to Reggie, and to herself. She had been testing herself to prove how strong she was, but it was cruel for all involved. Archie had been wrong when he had said it was Reggie's fault that she was upset after he left. It was Betty's fault that night, not his. Reggie was at fault the next night, but the time before that had been Betty's fault.
She smiled when she heard his car, and her heart sped up when he knocked at her window. She hoped her parents were sound asleep. They hadn't said anything else about her sexual activities, and she hoped they would stay out of it because she couldn’t help herself. She wanted Reggie too much to stop sleeping with him.
She let him in, and he held out a big bouquet of flowers for her. She hugged him tightly, so happy that he was there.
"Thank you," she whispered, putting the flowers in her vase.
He sat on her bed, rubbing his eyes.
"School tomorrow," she sighed.
He nodded. "I know. Why do I do these stupid thing to you Betty?"
"Reggie!" she sighed. "Stop it. I forgive you. I do."
"I shouldn't have done that. No way," he told her, staring at the floor.
"Ohhh, baby." she whispered, pulling him to her on the bed.
"I forgive you, all right? That's what relationships are about, forgiveness and compromise and you know."
He nodded, starting to cry. He broke down in front of her and he sobbed in her arms.
"Don't cry!" she told him, amazed once again that he was crying.
"Do you hate me Betty?" he whispered.
"No, I don't! I could never hate you, hon. I just said that 'cause I was mad. I'm not perfect. We're not perfect, but we just have to keep trying." She hugged him tighter.
He nodded again, and wiped his eyes. "Yeah, that's what my parents say, that you have to work at relationships."
"Your family is so perfect."
"Nah," he sniffled. "We're not really, you know that. My parents fight."
She shrugged.
"Really, you should see 'em when they go at it. But they seem to have fun making up. Ugg." he said. "But I guess you and I don't fight as much as other people we know,” he added suddenly, trying to comfort himself, and her.
She shook her head, smiling at him. “ You and I hardly ever fight. We've only had a couple of big ones."
"Yeah, I guess that's like my parents. They get along great, they love each other of course, but when they don't, look out!"
"Yeah, that's us. I guess we get cruel sometimes," she said quietly.
"I do, you mean."
"No, I do too! I've said mean stuff to you before when I’m angry or drinking. Remember?"
He shrugged. "But I still love you."
"I love you too," she said, kissing him, feeling so happy. They lay on her bed, just kissing for a while.
"So, am I a better kisser than Archie?" he teased.
She laughed, happy that he could joke about it. "Oh, yes, so much better. Much, much better."
"Good. You're a much better kisser than Archie, too!
She burst out laughing, so happy that everything had worked out. She tickled him and he tickled her back.
A knock came at her door, and she jumped. Reggie looked startled as the door opened and her mother peered in.
Reggie sat up, and her mother didn't seem too surprised to see him.
“Hi, Miss Alice.”
"Betty, you didn't wake me up, but can you please keep it down? I heard you guys laughing down the hall."
"Sure, sorry, Mom." Betty told her mother.
"All right, good-night."
Reggie looked amazed as the door closed. "Uh, doesn't your mom care that I'm here so late?"
Betty shrugged, relieved, but just as surprised as him.
"I guess not. She knows we've done it by the way."
"Really? You told her?"
"Yeah, she asked. I had to tell her the truth. She got upset, but I guess she figures they can't stop us. Wow..."
He kissed her. "They know we're in love."
"Right. I still thought she'd throw you out though. But I love you," she murmured.
They kissed again, holding each other tightly before and after she turned out the light. They slept until it was time for Reggie to go home and get ready for school.

Betty’s parents loved Reggie, although they made it clear they would prefer it if they didn't have sex. But they knew, although they weren't particularly liberal, that she was going to do it anyway, and trying to stop her would be useless. So they laid down some ground rules. No sex while they were home, similar to what the Mantles had said. They were agreeable to honor their parents’ requests. They did not want them to separate them, so they agreed to comply.
They still had many moments when their parents weren’t home, so they still had a very active sex life.
