When Reggie regained consciousness, he was in small dark room, tied to a chair. He began to struggle.
“So, you’re finally awake, Mantle.” The man’s face was in shadow, but Reggie could tell he was very well muscled, and very angry.
“Who are you and what do you want from me? How do you know me? And where am I? Let’s talk about this. Oh, I get it. How much do you want?” Reggie thought he had
been kidnapped for ransom.
“You’re always the cool one, huh Mantle? Will you still be so cool and calm if I cut your balls off and shove them down your throat? Who would want you then, eh, big shot?”
Chick felt great satisfaction to finally see fear in those hazel-green eyes.
“Good. I knew that would take the piss out of you. Now, I’ll tell you what I want from you. You will marry my sister.”
“What! . Who are you? How do I know your sister?” Haven’t you heard, or read the papers? I’m marrying Veronica Lodge in a few days “
“I should say you know my sister. You know her very well. I’m the big brother of Betty Cooper’s. I’m sure you heard about me. My sister is pregnant and it’s your child. It’s as
simple as this: You will marry her or I kill you. But I’m going to cut your balls off first. I will make you beg me for death. You will disappear and never be heard from again. Do
you understand me?” Chick opened the cell and entered. He wanted to make sure Reggie understood he was serious. He held a Glock 17 pistol to Reggie’s head and
Reggie heard a ‘click’. Reggie’s eyes widened at the sound. He swallowed hard, trying to act brave. He hoped his bladder held up.
“You’re Chick Cooper, the CIA agent? You’d actually kill me?” All of Betty’s friends knew of her elusive older brother and what he did for a living. Reggie was looking at him
wide eyed. Reggie was amazed at his words.
“Are you sure she’s pregnant? She just denied it when I asked her about it today! I told her I’d pay to get rid of it.”
“ Why you smug piece of shit! No fucking abortion! She wants to have the baby and she was leaving town to protect you. Well she won’t be going alone. Her husband will
leave with her. I’ve arranged for a judge to marry you both right away.”
“Look Chick. I’m not denying that the baby’s mine. If she wants to have it, I’ll give it my name and take care of them both. I’ll give Betty ten, no, twenty thousand dollars a
month for care of her and the child. We don’t need to be married, and no one needs to know about it. She wanted to go away anyway, you said. . I’ll be there for her and the
baby. But I’m marrying Veronica Lodge. Ron and I love each other.” Chick saw red at his words and punched Reggie in his face.
“Fuck! Cooper! What did I say wrong?”
“You’re in love with Veronica Lodge? What a dumb fuck you are, Mantle. Well, you should have thought about that before you fucked my sister. Your plans are not good
enough for Betty and the baby. She deserves a husband and the baby deserves its parents to be married. It’s marrying Betty or death by mutilation. Take your pick. Don’t
make me say it again.” Chick punched Reggie hard in his gut, to let him know he was not playing with him. He hated the smug rich types who felt they could buy their way out
of anything. “I’ll give you a little time to think it over… Say ten minutes.” Chick hit Reggie again and again. He hated the arrogant bastard and enjoyed hitting him. Reggie did
not cry out in pain, and that made Chick just hit him more, though he hated to admit Reggie had more balls than he thought. Chick did not know that Reggie had taken many
beatings such as this in his past. Moose Mason toughened him up immensely with his daily beatings because Reggie loved flirting with Moose’s girlfriend Midge.
“Mantle, did you really think you could impregnate Betty and go on with your life as if nothing happened? You wanted her to kill the baby, so you could make nice with the rich
Lodges, eh? “Well, bullshit! No way that will happen now. You will pay for sleeping with Betty and getting her pregnant. Why should she have the baby alone?” Reggie
gulped. Thank God this maniac doesn’t know I raped Betty!
     Chick would do whatever it took to get this overconfident jerk to marry Betty. Chick left Reggie alone to think for the ten minutes he allotted him. Chick was so angry; he
thought if Reggie refused, he would really kill him.
“Cooper, what’ll we do if he says ‘no’? We can’t really kill him, can we?” Chick’s CIA friend Hauser asked. “This guy looks stubborn.” He hoped Chick had frightened that
asshole enough to agree. Reggie had vomited with pain after Chick left him. He was very angry. Chick felt he could force him to do the right thing. He could still marry
Veronica and take care of Betty too.
All too soon, Chick returned, with Hauser. Both had guns in their hands. Very large guns.
“So, Mantle, times up. What will it be? Marriage to my sister or die. My friend here has a thousand ways to torture you before you die, by the way.” Hauser had to be the most
dangerous, menacing-looking man Reggie had ever seen in his life. He made Moose Mason look like a girl scout.
“It looks like you leave me no choice, Cooper. I’ll marry her.” But that doesn’t mean I have to live with her. I definitely don’t love her. Ron’s gonna kill me. Fuck!
“Oh, and just in case you think you are going to desert her, I’ll be watching you. You better not mistreat her. Get it?”
“Look Cooper. You have me in a difficult situation. I’ll marry Betty, but I’ll never love her.” At the cold bitter, look in Reggie’s eyes, Chick hoped he did not ruin things for his
sister. She was in love with this man if she was willing to sleep with him and have his baby alone. What did she see in this one? Andrews was bad enough. Chick did
remember how Reggie had supported Betty when their parents were killed. He would watch Reggie and see if he was worthy of his sister’s love. He fought down the urge to
hit him again.
“You should have kept your dick out of my kid sister. I don’t know how you seduced her into sleeping with you, but you did. Now you pay. Let’s go. Oh and you better not tell
her about this.”
“Fuck you! I wouldn’t hurt Betty like that” They untied him and led him to Chick’s car. Chick shook hands with Hauser and he soon left them. Chick drove Reggie to Betty’s
apartment, stopping first to pick up a strange man that Reggie never saw before. Chick did not feel the need to make introductions.
“Reggie! What are you doing here?” She saw her brother behind him, joined by the other man, who she also did not know. “Chick, what’s going on here!?”
“Yeah Chick, tell her.” Reggie looked almost unrecognizable in his fury and pain. Betty placed a hand to the bruises on Reggie’s face and glared at her brother.
“I have arranged everything Sissy. Here he is, ready to marry you. My friend, The Hon. Frederick P. Jamison is here to do the marriage. We have a special license and
everything."
“Chick what have you done! You promised you wouldn’t interfere! I won’t do it! How could you!”
She screamed, totally mortified at what her brother had done. She ran to her bedroom.
Chick ran after her. “You are forcing him to marry me! I know it! It looks like you beat him up, too. Reggie is set to marry Veronica. Why did you do this? You lied to me!”
“No I didn’t Sissy lie to you. I agreed I wouldn’t do anything crazy. I uhh, just made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.” This was said in his best Marlon Brando imitation from the
movie ‘The Godfather’
“ Seriously, though, the baby deserves its parents to be married. It will work out, Sissy, you’ll see.”
“He’ll hate me, forever because of this, do you know that? I can’t agree to it.”
“How could he hate you? He’ll love you like everyone else does, I just know it. Now come on. You must do this, or I’ve ruined his life for no reason. He should thank me for
saving him from that bitch.” Chick kissed Betty, pulling her back into the living room, where a very angry Reggie was standing. He was glaring at Chick. He sighed when he
looked at Betty. Try as he might, Reggie could not blame Betty for this.
“I need to speak to Reggie alone for a moment, before I agree do to this.” Reggie noted the sign from Chick that he would cut his throat if he did not convince Betty to marry
him.
After she closed the door to her bedroom for privacy, Betty took his hand. Reggie flinched at her touch. She pretended not to notice.
“Reggie, this has gotten way out of hand. I never wanted you to know about the baby. I made the decision to keep it, knowing you were marrying Veronica. Somehow Chick
found out about it. He has his mind made up about this, and I can’t make Chick change his mind. He broke his word to me, and he has never done that before. However, I
do have a plan. After the baby is born, I’ll tell Chick I’m in love with someone else, and I want a divorce. He won’t push us to stay together after that. This is the only way out. I
do not want you to hate me. What do you say, Reg.?”
He looked at Betty with hope. He knew she would help him out of this mess.
“It’s a great idea babe. It’s the least I can do, since this is all my fault. I agree. We stay married until the baby is born” Reggie was relieved she agreed to marry him. He
needed his gonads and life intact. Plus it would not be for too long. Thing were looking up. They shook hands on it. They rejoined the others and were quickly married. Now
Reggie had the very difficult task to explain things to his parents and Veronica. He went to Veronica’s mansion first. That would be the worst. Better to get it over with.
“I hope they don’t kill me.” He thought, as Veronica ran to great him with a hug and searing kiss.
“Hi Baby. I didn’t expect you back. Let’s go to our little place. I want to go make love. I’ll stop the pill right now. I won’t take it anymore. I want a baby right away.” Reggie held
her tight, his face buried in her neck. Well, here goes…
“Ronnie, I have uh, have some very bad news to tell you…”
“Not now lover, let’s go get naked.” She was feeling his crotch, driving him crazy with desire.
“Baby, please! You have to hear this.” He reluctantly removed her hand from his cock.
“Ronnie, baby, uh, I was just forced to marry Betty. She’s pregnant with my child…”
He couldn’t finish his sentence because she was screaming and raving hysterically at him. Veronica scratched his face, then punched him in his eye with a right hook
worthy of Mohammed Ali.
“How did you come to sleep with that bitch?? I hate you!! I hate you both!! Daddy!!!” She kicked Reggie in his shin, causing him to fall to the floor in agony. She just kept
kicking him all over in her anger and grief.
      Hiram and Hermione Lodge, Veronica’s parents, came barreling into the sitting room, to see what all of the commotion was about. When Veronica told them that Reggie
just married a pregnant Betty Cooper, Mr. Lodge fired him on the spot. He also gave him a good punch in the nose, causing it to bleed profusely. Veronica followed her
father’s blow with a punch of her own.
“Of course you know you will hear from my lawyers. I’ll sue you, Mantle, for everything for this outrage. No one jilts a Lodge. NO ONE!!”
“Why Reggie?? Why? What happened? I thought you loved me? I know you were somehow forced to do it. Daddy will help you get this farce annulled. How did this happen?
Why did you have to marry her?”
“She’s pregnant, baby, and it’s mine. I drunkenly took her virginity. I was drunk, mixed up the hotel rooms, and I thought she was you. Ron, I love you, but I can’t leave her until
after the child is born. Then we can get on with our lives. What do you say? Just six months to wait. Then we can be together. Please. Promise me you’ll wait.” He limped
closer to her with each word. Tears were in his eyes. He really made a mess of things.
“Reggie, are you in love with Betty? I knew I hated her being so close to you!! How do you know it’s yours?” Veronica was heartbroken. She loved Reggie so much, even now.
Needless to say, her friendship with Betty Cooper was over.
“No Ron. You know I love you with all of my heart. I know the baby is mine. She was a virgin. I’m so sorry for all of this. Please, just wait for me to do this, and we will never be
apart again. I’m only marrying her until the child is born, then we will divorce. Her CIA brother persuaded me to marry her. He threatened our families baby.” His pride would
not let him admit he was scared into marrying Betty.
“See Daddy, I knew he was had no choice. Yes, my love, I’ll wait for you!!” She ran into his arms, loving and hating him at the same time. She hated Betty even more. Reggie
was a man, after all. How dare she go after my man? I let her have Archie, but that wasn’t enough for her. I could kill her!! Her very upset parents pulled them apart.
“My baby will not be waiting for you, you little shit!! Get the fuck out of my sight before I kill you!” This was from a very irate Mrs. Lodge.
     Reggie was so sorry for the pain he caused so many by his one night of lust. But to his surprise, he found in his heart of hearts, that he really wanted that baby, and he
would do whatever he had to do keep it. After barely escaping from the Lodge Mansion with his life, he had to go face his parents. He was very honest with them.
“Mom. Dad, I’m in trouble. I raped Betty in a drunken fog and now she’s having my baby. Her brother made me marry her. I just realized that I want the baby, though.” His
parents looked at their son in horror. He looked like he got run over by a bus. His face was bruised, and one eye was almost closed.
“What happened to you!! Who hit you, son?” Reggie’s mother, Victoria ran to get ice for his eye. “The whole Lodge family took a whack at me.” He tried to laugh it off. Vicky
Mantle was horrified that Veronica resorted to violence on her son.
“ Reginald, this is too much. Couldn’t you have paid the girl off? What’s her price? Everyone has one.”
“I tried that, Dad! No good. Besides Betty’s not that kind of girl. She can’t be bought. You know that. It’s that brother of hers.”
“You didn’t offer enough money, son! Let me try.”
“Please dad. We definitely can’t offer a bribe to Chick Cooper! It’s too late, anyway. We’re already married. But, good news. Betty has offered to divorce me once the baby is
born. We will just have to wait.”
“Can you trust her, son? You are quite a catch. And she won’t get an abortion, huh?”
Reggie vehemently shook his head. ”This may surprise you, but I want that baby. I can’t wait for it to be born.”
“Richard! She’s having our grandchild. Are you nuts?” Victoria started to cry, which made both father and son run to her side.
“If it’s any comfort, Betty wasn’t going to tell me about the baby. She was going away to keep it a secret. She didn’t plan on this, but her brother had other ideas. He
threatened me with jail. I couldn’t let that happen.” Reggie didn’t want even his parents to know how Chick got him to agree to the marriage. “ Folks, I need your support. I
can’t stand being away from Veronica, but I couldn’t let Betty’s brother ruin our family. I’m only staying with Betty until the baby is born, then Veronica and I will get married as
we planned. Mr. Lodge will hire me back, and we’ll all be friends again. I’m so sorry for all of this.”
“OK son, we’ll try to be nice to her. I really hate losing all of the Lodge connections and money, though.” Richard Mantle was sadly shaking his head.
“But we gain a grandchild to spoil darling. We have enough money without Lodge Enterprise. Don’t forget our ranch. Reginald can go there until this all blows over.” Victoria
Mantle was always the voice of sanity and reason in the Mantle household. She never liked Veronica anyway. Richard Mantle nodded as the three of them hugged each other
at the thought of a new Mantle, but sad at how things had turned out. They had expected that grandchild to be half Lodge, not Cooper.
Maybe it's for the best, Vicky thought.
Plus that Lodge girl almost ruined their precious son’s face.
