The Emotional Spectrum
Chapter 10: Arrival
~*~
“Ohhhhhhhhhh Godddddddd!” Jade screamed from her bed. She was sweating profusely and in agony.
Standing besides her, Kyle Rayner held her hand as he tried to calm her. Kissing her head as she breathed loudly Kyle said, “You’re almost there Jen.”
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Jennifer Rayner screamed for all in the room to hear. Her scream was soon echoed by the sound of a baby’s cry.
With one last push her newborn was removed from her body and Jennifer breathed a sigh of relief. While Jen was catching her breath, Dr. Mid-Nite, who was consulting on the birth of Kyle and Jen’s baby, suddenly was alerted to something that had not been present during any of the Rayner’s exams.
“Doctor Durant…” Dr. Mid-Nite said. The doctor came over and looked at the screen that Pieter Cross was staring at in a bewildered manner.
“My god…” Dr. Durant replied before moving back between Jennifer’s legs.
Before Jen or Kyle could inquire what was wrong Jen was made astutely aware of the issue at hand. A higher pitched squeal exited Jade’s mouth at the sudden re-occurrence of pain.
Kyle, who had just been handed his son, was by Jen’s side when the doctor stated, “Multiple births… the second baby just appeared on the screen. We have no explanation for it.”
One of the attending nurses wheeled a bassinet to Kyle who gently placed his son in the protective carrier. Kyle immediately returned to his wife as she once again went through the birthing process. Jen squeezed his hand and Kyle grinned and bore it for the thirty minutes it took to for Jen to give birth to their next child, a little girl. When their daughter was out and taking its first breaths of life Dr. Mid-Nite commenced scanning Jade’s body to verify that she had finished giving birth.
When Jen “popped” during her second trimester she was considerably larger than someone carrying a single child but every test that the Rayner family obstetrician ran indicated that they were only having one child. Dr. Cross was brought in at Alan’s recommendation as a consultant as he was a well known and respected physician to the metahuman community. Dr. Mid-Nite ran several tests of his own and likewise concluded that this was a single child birth, not a multi-child pregnancy. To say that he was surprised to see a second child would be an understatement to say the least. Dr. Cross was just about to give the all clear when Jennifer herself let out another anguished cry. Pieter watched as the scanner lit up once again to reveal a third child. The medical staff went into action for the third time and in less than ten minutes, the third child of Kyle and Jennifer, another girl, was born.
Not willing to take anymore chances, Kyle instructed his ring to run a comprehensive scan on his wife. Kyle focused intently and the ring stated that Jennifer was indeed finished. The medical staff remained on stand for the next thirty minutes while the Rayner triplets were cleaned up, tagged to ensure their security, and taken to the infants ward. When the rings findings were verified true, the doctors attended to Jennifer while Kyle just whispered his love for his emerald skinned goddess.
Jen was exhausted to say the least, but despite being ill prepared for the multiple births was overjoyed when she heard each of their cries of life. While many women might threaten the man who impregnated them with multiple painful births Jen did no such thing. When she returned to life, and he returned to her she wanted nothing more than to give Kyle the life and family he deserved. While not planned in any way she realized within the month of their reunion that she was most likely pregnant. It didn’t take her very long to do the math as the night of their reunion she and Kyle had unprotected sex with him climaxing multiple times within her womb. She consulted her obstetrician immediately and was given the verification that she was indeed pregnant.
Jen prepared a rather intimate dinner for Kyle that night and gently broke the news to him. She thought for sure that he would accuse her of trying to trap him immediately after reuniting, maybe in fear of him returning to Soranik Natu but Kyle said no such thing. He was well aware of the role he played in their child’s birth, he had even suspected as much when Jen apparently missed her monthly visitor. After living together in such confined quarters, twice no less, he was more than aware of her cycle and her mannerisms during said time. Taking her hand Kyle led her to the couch. Holding out his right hand he opened a portal to the pocket dimension where he normally stored his power battery. Only instead of the battery he withdrew a small velvet box. Jen’s eyes began to tear as Kyle opened to box to show her the engagement ring that he had acquired for her long ago. It was as beautiful as he had described it to her on Oa.
“Oh Kyle…” Jen managed to utter aloud.
“I made this for you a long time ago. I never thought I’d get to give it to you… until recently. I love you Jennifer-Lynn Hayden. Will you please do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Kyle removed the ring from its box, and slipped it on Jen’s left ring finger. Jen could only nod as she wrapped her arms around the man she had promised to love for the rest of their lives.
Jen’s family was very surprised at the sudden announcement of her wedding but less so when Jen announced she was pregnant. Todd turned dark and was about to lunge at Kyle when Jen stepped between the man she loved and her twin and threatened to teleport him to the far end of the galaxy if he some much as gave Kyle a dirty look. Todd, not normally one to back down, did so as the look his twin sister was giving him expressed how serious she was. Alan, being far less dramatic than Todd, simply walked forward and embraced his daughter and his soon to be son-in-law. Alan and Kyle shared a bond of friendship and understanding not all that different than a father and son might. They were both Green Lanterns, but different variations. In many ways Alan was the mentor that Kyle never really had as the sole Oan Green Lantern. Having dated Jen twice before Alan and Kyle knew where they stood with one another relationship wise. Alan also knew how happy Kyle made Jen and if this was what they wanted, he would not stand in their way.
The couple planned and executed a modest wedding attended by family and their closest Justice League friends. Jen was disappointed that she could not get in touch with Merayn Dethalis, whom she had been searching for since her return to life, but could not delay her wedding for the missing Bavacquaian. All this was on her mind as after some alone time with her husband the triplets were returned to their parents. Kyle immediately left the room but only to get the three people Jen and Kyle wanted to share this moment with right now. Alan and Molly Scott walked into the room followed by Todd Rice. Todd acknowledged Kyle but kept his distance fearing he might lash out at his brother-in-law in same manner and find himself on Pluto before the hour was up.
Jen was sitting up holding her first born son with her daughters lying besides her, cushioned by an emerald energy construct. The serene triplets watched their grandparents and uncle as daddy took his son and handed him to Todd. Todd felt uncomfortable at first until his nephew gave him a coo and nestled into his embrace.
“Uncle Todd, say hello to your nephew, Ian Garrison Rayner.” Kyle informed all present.
Jen lifted her first born daughter up and handed her to Molly. Molly cuddled the dark haired girl and peppered her with kisses. All could see her brilliant green eyes and smiled at the adorable girl.
“What’s this ones name Jen?” Molly asked.
“Maura Erin Rayner.” Jen stated proudly.
Kyle walked to Jen and carefully lifted the final bundle of joy up and presented her to Alan. Alan gazed lovingly at his youngest grandchild and then to Jen waiting for the name of this obviously gifted child. The baby’s eyes were dark but the hair on her head was as green as her mothers. Jennifer Rayner smiled and said, “Alana… Alana Molly Rayner.”
Alan and Molly were very surprised, then extremely proud to have this special little girl named after the both of them. The group all loved the children and spent as much time with them as they could before leaving Jen and Kyle to bond with their children. Before Todd left Kyle asked to speak with him for a moment. The two men walked over to vacant waiting room. Kyle let out a sigh after the long day that he and Jen had finally completed. It was the first day of their new life and Kyle couldn’t wait, but he had to resolve this one issue before things could truly begin.
“I know you love Jen. She’s your twin and the two of you have a very special bond. But she is my wife and the mother of my children. We never got off on the right foot and we always seemed to consistently end up at one an others throats.” Kyle stated.
“That is my family in that room… our family. Jen loves you and wants you in their lives. I want my children to know their uncle. But… there can be no more animosity between us. The past is the past, let it go. Let’s bury all the bad and incredibly stupid things that have happened between us and move forward for those three little ones and the woman we both love.”
Kyle extended his left hand to Todd. Todd looked at it for all of thirty seconds before he took this brother-in-laws hand and shook it. He smiled and agreed.
“See you around.” Kyle said to his wife’s twin. Something he would not normally have uttered before this day. Todd nodded and departed.

-Five Days Later-
The sterile halls of the Justice League Watchtower, normally quiet, were currently filled with the coos and other various baby noises from the Rayner triplets. The infants were on board the orbital space station getting their first exposure to wonders of outer space. Jennifer was holding her son while daddy held his daughters and they gazed out of the main window down upon Earth. Off to the side Clark and Lois Kent were watching the new parents and their children. Despite how happy they were for Kyle and Jen they were also envious that the Rayner’s had what Lois and her husband desperately wanted; a family. Supergirl was floating above the group observing the various interactions between the league members and the babies. She felt nothing but joy for Jen and Kyle but also felt sadness for her cousin and his wife. It must be terrible being in their situation but knew that if anyone could overcome this obstacle, it was Lois and Clark.
After holding each of the triplets Jesse Tyler looked at the pair and wondered when she and her own husband would settle down and have a family. She knew that life as superheroes was very demanding and had been difficult for their parents but she was determined to succeed where her parents failed. Jesse just hoped Rex felt the same way.
More and more of the Justice League members were arriving to see Kyle and Jen’s children. As time went on all of the present members, even Bruce, each paid a visit to the children. Jen and Kyle were extremely surprised when Bruce presented the kids with three cards, each containing a small trust fund for their college education. Bruce grinned and walked off, not needing anymore thanks that the knowledge that their children’s future would be provided for. Jen noted that everyone on the current roster had visited except for the still missing Donna Troy. Donna had gone missing over eight months ago and the various league members had continually searched for her ever since she missed her first monitor duty. For months the superhero community scoured the planet, followed every lead with no results whatsoever. Kyle had conducted his own search after the dream he had featuring her but found no traces of her anywhere. This weighed heavily on his mind as he held his daughters close to him.
Dick Grayson was talking to Jen when he saw Kyle list, and then suddenly fell to the ground. Dick was moving to Kyle’s side before Jen even registered something was wrong with her husband. Kyle never even realized he was falling, much less dropping his daughters as his body crashed to the floor. Dick Grayson swept in and caught the two precious cooing girls before either realized felt their father’s arms giveaway. The two were smiling as Dick rocked them in his arms. Jesse took hold of the two girls as Clark rushed to the fallen lantern’s side and then ran him to the medical bay. J’onn J’onzz was already present and had the medical scanners running as soon as Superman placed Kyle on the bed. A detailed scan revealed nothing physically wrong with Kyle, it was as if Kyle was physically present but his mind had been disconnected from his body.
“Kyle.” Jade called out to her husband as she came to his side. “KYLE!!!”
~*~
Kyle Rayner was not dead. Or at least he didn’t think he was. He did not know how it is that he came to be in his present state but he was awake, very awake, yet he felt like he was dreaming. He knew that he was not in his body yet he had some semblance of physical form. As he neared a dark and foreboding planet that he had never been to Kyle some how immediately recognized the location. The dark planet seemed lifeless save for a dimly lit temple located on the dark side of the planet. Kyle flew towards the temple and when he was met with no resistance, entered it as covertly as he could. He heard noises and followed them as best he could towards the source. Kyle found himself overlooking a chamber with multiple pillars. Attached to the pillars were the entities of the emotional spectrum. He recognized Ion and Parallax immediately having been bonded to the both of them at one time. While he had never seen the other five he somehow knew instantly who they were. Bellow each of the pillars in this chamber seven tables were set up and upon each of the tables was a woman that Kyle knew.
Kyle saw Soranik Natu, Lyssa Drak, Aimee DeWitt, Merayn Dethalis, Sinthia, Donna Troy, and Lianna propped up and being attended to by individual midwives. He could not help but notice that all seven women were very pregnant and in the middle of giving birth. Kyle could only watch as the women writhed in pain as they all groaned. Almost miraculously all seven children were born at the same moment. The midwives gave each mother their child and the mothers gave each child their first meal as they began bonding with their infants. When the children were content Krona the Mad made his presence known to the mothers. The infants sensed something was amiss and all seven began crying as one. The cries of the children were like music to his ears. Kyle watched in horror as the infants were stripped from their mothers who were all too fatigued from the birthing process to offer much in the way of resistance. Without saying a word Krona released the entities from their bonds and the seven entities each merged with an infant that Kyle noted seemed to correlate to their mother’s respective corp.
Kyle wanted to make his presence known but found he was not capable of moving. Donna, Sora and Merayn were in tears as their babies cries soon transformed to moans and groans as the infants grew and became adults before their very eyes. Standing on their own feet, the children created a uniform unique to each of their respective entities and then bowed before the Oan scientist.
“We are ready Krona.” The seven sons and daughters of Rayner proclaimed.
“The time has come to show my brothers and sisters the error of their ways.” Krona announced. “You… my genetically gifted children will take back what those arrogant immortals dared to steal from me… and when we have the device, I will take my revenge on them!”
The mothers and Kyle were force to watch as Krona left the chamber to carry out his plan. Lyssa Drak looked in the direction of Kyle Rayner and said, “Oa… he’s going to Oa. Stop him… save… save our children… your… children.”
Lyssa passed out after giving Kyle the information he needed. He didn’t know how she knew that he was present, but he knew that she did. Looking at the stars overhead, Kyle memorized the star constellations. Closing his eyes, Kyle said to himself, “Wake up… wake up… WAKE UP!!!”
~*~
Kyle shot up from his bed almost knocking Jennifer over in the process. She was quickly at her husband’s side with tears of joy falling down her face. Before anyone could ask a question Kyle was up and transforming into his Green Lantern uniform.
“J’onn… read my mind. Brief the others and get every cosmic hero you can.” Kyle insisted.
J’onn did as instructed and Kyle could almost swear his face changed to a lighter shade of green. Jen was about to question him when Kyle’s hands grasped her arms and he pulled her to him.
“They weren’t dreams.” Kyle said expecting Jen to understand. It took her a moment but realization quickly came to her.
“The entities… Krona the mad was using the entities on me. He forced me to mate with each of those women to create children… special children.”
Everyone in the room quickly grasped the concept before them. Like her mother before her, Alana had all the tell tale signs of a child with a special genetic heritage. Children channeling each of the other lantern corps all with mothers with special traits could potentially be unstoppable.
“We need to get to Ryut and Oa. The mothers are on Ryut, the children and Krona are on their way to Oa.” Kyle informed those present.
“Jen…”
Before Kyle could say anything Jen hushed him with a finger. She kissed him and bade him go.
Using his powers Kyle created a visual of the star constellation that he had seen above Ryut. J’onn mapped it and gave the coordinates to Superman who had assembled a team to go rescue the mothers. Kyle then kissed his family before rocketing off to Oa for a family reunion.
