Chapter Ten: Put In Perspective
Back in the sewers, there was commotion. Loud music, and commotion. Laughter, and commotion. Anger, and commotion. There were two of them, mutant turtles staring at a T.V. screen, each stomping rhythmically on separate, arrowed pads. One turtle laughed, the other just got angry.
"HA! C'mon, Raph! You're movin' like a turtle, Bro! Get with the beat!"
"GRRR!!! I'll show yuh how tuh get beat!" His two-toes tootsies kept missing the arrows, and it didn't help that his game was on Beginners' Mode.
"Cool it, Raph," Leonardo was practicing his kata in the middle of the room. Video games sure kept his brothers occupied, but Raphael always got so worked up about it all. Maybe even more so than Casey did, and especially when they were two-player, "It's just a game!"
"Yeah, Raph! It's just a game, so there's no need to get all worked up, just cus ya got no rhythm and you move like you have a shell on your back and I'm totally FRYIN' ya!" Raphael was easily frustrated, but Michelangelo had a special talent for getting him steamed. "Ha!" His tongue hung out as he laughed, and he rubbed his dominance in by flipping onto his back and spinning on his shell for a moment, before popping back up and maintaining his perfect score.
Raph's face was nearly as red as his mask. "Mikey, I'm warnin' you! Damn! What duh shell's goin' on!? I'm steppin' on the arrow! Look! Look! Yuh see me steppin' on it! I know yuh lookin'!" He stepped on the same arrow over and over again to express himself. But that didn't stop his brother from flaunting his victory.
Leonardo groaned to himself. Probably best to step in before things got ugly, "Mikey, there's some things people are better at than other people. In this case, you are better at DDR than Raph. However, both I and Raphael can beat your shell almost every time in sparring matches. Like so!" He jumped at his youngest brother, knocking him off the pads and pinning him down on the floor while they watched Mikey's average collapse like a stack of dominoes.
If Leo thought this was going to remove the grin from his brother's face, he was wrong. "Gee, Leo! Thanks! You're providing me with a second shell for when I tell Raph that I didn't just fry 'im, I fried 'im up and served 'im on that dance pad!" His tongue stuck out in Raph's direction while he mocked.
"All right." Raph retrieved a sai. "Hold ‘im tight, Leo, cuz I'm gonna gouge his eyes out and SKULL-FUCK HIM!!! RAAAGGGHHH!!!" And he dove onto Leo, trying his very best to get a grip on the terrapin beneath him, whom held Leo down by wrapping his legs around him to use him as a shield.
"Dammit, Raph!" Now the three of them were brawling on the floor. Leo was trying to pull Mikey's legs off his shell, while Raph was busily trying to get through Leo to pummel Mikey. It wasn't all that long before Leo wasn't sure who he was actually hitting, and had landed punches on both his opponents.
Mikey was enjoying this, regardless of the blows. He wasn't throwing any back, however, as he was focussed on using Leo as a shield from Raphael's attack. So, he concentrated on out-wrestling Leonardo to hold him in place while taking the majority of Raph's enraged punches. "What's the matter Raph!? How come ya can't hit me!? Do I have an arrow on my face!?"
"Not yet, Wise Guy! Not yet!" He pulled a Sai, and pointed at Mikey through Leo. "But keep lippin' it up, and yuh'll have an arrow in yuh mouth!"
"Mikey will you quit being so damn immature!" Leo shouted, "And Raph, put that sai away, or you'll hurt somebody with it! It's even harder to get off Mikey when you're on top of my shell!"
Raphael grumbled, and complied by sliding off his brother's back. He twirled his sai, and re-secured it. "One moah round. One moah round and if I don't win, I'm retirin' from dis game. It's discrimination against Red, I tell yuh! I was steppin' on dat arrow!"
Leo got up again, "Look, you lost, Raph. If you want to win at DDR, you have to practice in single-player first! It's just like anything else-"
It was then that the door to the lair opened, and Master Splinter and Donatello returned.
Mikey's grin went away. "Dun dun duuunnnnn! And the parental rodent has thus returned! ...with no pizza." His head got clunked, just then, by a tossed Sai's handle. "Ow! What!? I'm hungry..."
Raphael grinned at the doorway as they entered. "Welcome back, Mastuh Splintuh. How'd the outing wit’ lovuh-boy go? Did he drive yuh crackuhz wit'dat internet lingo o' his?"
"Mikey, you're always hungry-" Leonardo bowed as his father returned. Master Splinter was fine, and so was Don, so it probably hadn't been a trap.
"Correction, Leo." He closed his eyes, and raised a finger matter-of-factly. "I am only hungry when my tummy has no deep-dish pepperoni pizza with double-thick crust and extra cheese in it. Duh." Another whack to the head, this time by Raph's hand. "Ouch!"
Donatello and Master Splinter were the least-likely duo to leave the lair together. Alone, anyway. That was why Raph poked fun at the idea of it - it was awkward just thinking about what the two of them would have talk about! Don waved politely at his brothers.
"The meeting went rather well, Raphael," Splinter replied calmly, "I believe that soon Donatello's friend will be invited down to the lair to meet you all. Of course, I thought it best to make you aware of this event. before-hand."
The red-masked turtle blinked for a moment, and placed an angry fist on his side. "Hold it, wait a cotton-pickin' tuhtle-stinkin' minute heah. Yuh mean tuh tell me she's real?! Donny actually has a guhlfriend!? And dat she's comin' down tuh our lair!?"
"Huh!? What!? ...does she have pizza!?" Mikey flinched in preparation for another hit, but it never came. Raph's attention was no longer on him.
"Maybe later," Splinter told Michelangelo, humouring him, "I have talked with her for some time and have come to the decision that she is as trustworthy as Ms. O'Niel or Casey, who have already been brought to the lair without my specific permission. However, she will not be living here on a permanent basis."
Raphael didn't know what question to ask first, and he was already about to grab his head in its boil. "Mastuh Splintuh, have you gone WHACKO!? Don, just how much o' dat internet lingo didja say while you was gone!? Yuh drivin' 'im nuts!"
"Actually, Raph." Donatello started, calmly and politely. "The whole thing really is true. I really do have a friend who's coming to visit. And she's great! A potential love interest for me by a long shot, so I need you guys to make the best impression you can for me, okay?"
Michelangelo, instantly, was excited for a newcomer. A girl newcomer, for that matter. "Gnarly, dude! I can show her my new Atomic Party Dance! This is gonna be awesome! I'll start mopping! C'mon, Leo! Last one to the broom closet's got an egg for a shell!" And he took off, hurriedly, laughing all the way.
Donatello shook his head, smiling. "Well, that's one sibling I won't have to worry about."
Leonardo slapped his forehead again. He already knew most of the story. It looked like Master Splinter had decided Breech, whoever she was and whatever she really looked like, was acceptable despite any previous associations with drug dealers who had associations to the Foot Clan. He still wanted to meet her and decide for himself, but Master Splinter's judgement was good enough, for now at least. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't be good enough for Raphael.
"I'm going to start tidying up as well." Donatello stated, as he went for his room.
He was stopped, though, by a leaping Raphael, who landed just in front of him, muscles clenched and eyes flaming. "So lemme get dis straight. You have a guhlfriend. You took Mastuh Splintuh tuh meet huh, knowin' dat it coulda been a trap. You decided on bringin' huh heah, and revealin' everytin' we've been tryin' tuh hide since we wuh born?!"
Donny held a straight face. A gentle one, at that. "Well... Not exactly. But yes, you're close enough. However! She knows how we feel, and how important it is to hide. She's also a mutant, very much like ourselves."
"Raphael!" Splinter said sharply, "I made the decision to allow her to come here. Donatello has gone to some lengths to keep our family safe while helping her at the same time. Calm yourself; I believe that right now she would be in more danger from you, than you from her."
Splinter's words only enraged Raphael more. As expected. He lifted a hand to his face, and it made several different attempts at gestures before he could align his thoughts properly. "Donny. Dis bettuh not be a mistake, or I swear, I'm gonna shove dat bo where duh sun don't shine."
"I'm not worried about it, Raph. And you shouldn't be either. Now I really have to pre-" but he got held back again, and cut off.
"I wanna meet her first. Ain't no way some bi-" Don's fingers pressed on his lips, all of a sudden, stopping him short.
Don's eyes were closed, and his head tilted diagonally down, so as to avoid Raphael's glare. "Watch what you say. And what you call her. I won't tolerate embarrassment, Raph. This is very important to me and I need you to be at your very best behaviour."
His hand got shoved away, harshly, after he spoke. "You won't tolerate embarrassment!? Who says I'm gonna tolerate her bein' heah!? Dis is whacko! Insane! What the shell's gotten intuh you two!?"
Leonardo spoke up, "Raph, I think what you're really getting worked up about is the fact that you didn't get any choice in this. Well guess what? I didn't get any choice in this, and neither did Mikey, and we're not throwing tantrums about it. Why can't you just respect Master Splinter's decision?"
Master Splinter nodded at Leonardo, although he doubted those words alone would calm the overprotective Raphael.
Raph turned to Leo, finger abroad to point at him. "Oh yeah, Splintuh Juniuh's gotta come tuh duh rescue, even dough he's on duh same side as me from duh start! Back off, Leo. Yuh gonna sit there an' be too much a wuss tuh defend what yuh feel? Do it quietly and stay duh shell outta my way. Ain't nuttin' tuh respect about makin' dumb choices." He turned back to Don, now, who was... gone. He made his escape while his brother's attention was on 'Splinter Junior'.
"Ugh..." Leo shook his head as Master Splinter left him to deal with Raphael, "This is exactly why nobody comes to you with their problems, Raph. You think you're the only person whose opinion matters. Well, Don's met somebody who makes him happy, and Master Splinter approves of her. But that's never enough for you, is it?"
Raphael walked up to Leo, and stood before him face-to-face. A very common moment that happens way too often. "Y'know what, big brothuh? No. It ain't. And it especially ain't enough dat you, oh wise turtle o' duh slums, are standin' here makin' me look like duh bad guy, when you don't agree wit dis yuhself! If dis family was half as important tuh Don as it is tuh me, he'd have taken us tuh meet her before Mastuh Splintuh could let her show up in our home! And anothuh thing, what's wit'aull duh secrecy!? Why am I only findin' dis out now!?"
"Because if you'd found out before, you would STILL be pulling this immature tantrum," Leo replied, glaring at his brother, "Well you know something else, Raph? She used to kill for people who funded the Foot Clan, and they trained her in ninja skills. But at least Don didn't bring her straight back here, the way you brought back a hockey-stick wielding maniac, and a news reporter!" Man, he'd been angry at Don for meeting up with this Breech, but at least Master Splinter approved of her now. Raphael could really put things in perspective. Nobody made him look like the bad guy - he did it just fine by himself.
It took him a moment to compute this latest information. Leo had both given him new data, and throwing April and Casey back at his face. Raph was clearly going into verbal attack mode now. He turned away from Leo, and screamed. "DONNYYYYY!!!!"
Donatello poked his head out his doorway, and looked down at Raphael. "Yes, Raph?"
"Get yoah shell down heah. Now."
"Raph, I'm saying this one more time," Leo said, becoming calm again, "I didn't get a say. Mikey didn't get a say. And when it comes down to it, Don didn't get a say either. And I'm not saying he didn't break any rules. But at least he thought more about it than you ever did about bringing new friends home for a beer and a movie!"
Not without a deep sigh, Donatello walked down the stairs to the common area, and stood before his two brothers. "May I help you, Raphael?" He was prepared for the worst, and it showed. But he wasn't about to back down, either.
Raphael breathed before he spoke. "Wut's dis Leo's tellin' me about yuh new guhlfriend bein' an ex-Foot? Cuz, correct me if I got my family history wrong, but ain't they duh ones who trashed our home, and kidnapped our fathuh!?"
Don was determined to explain himself calmly. "She was forced, Raphael. Forced. It wasn't her choice. She was treated as a slave. Forced to do things, horrible things, against her will. Didn't Master Splinter teach us to help people like her? People who are less fortunate than us?"
"Yeah, Master Splinter's decided she's okay, Raph. Why can't you deal with that?" Leo asked his brother, who was looking really pissed now.
"Oh, I plan on dealin' wit it. Don't'chu worry about dat. I'm gonna deal wit it, fuh sure." This was a losing battle for him. It would only earn him a lecture from their father to continue any further, so he walked away, as calmly as he could for someone who could feel his blood bubbling. He'd let his opinion be known. One way, or another.
"D-Did... you guys just say she worked for someone who worked for the Foot?" Mikey, apparently, was behind Leo for some time, holding a wet mop over his shoulder, and a blue, deep bucket in his left hand. "C-cuz... Those guys aren't exactly educated when it comes to bein' house-guests..."
"No, she had to work for people who funded the Foot," Leo repeated what Don had told him last night, "There's a small but subtle difference." Leo turned to look at Don again, "Raph really puts getting pissed off in perspective, doesn't he? Man, I hope if you're going to be bringing your new girlfriend down here reguarly she can deal with total shellheads like him."
Donatello shook his head, smiling gently as he placed his right hand on Leo's shoulder. "I trust that if she does have to deal with such a thing, she'll only have to deal with one. Right, Leo?" He placed his left hand on Mikey's shoulder, to form a triangular oath. "Mikey? I can trust you guys to be at your best, right? No interrogation at all? You'll treat her as a guest?"
"Hey, I'm holdin' the mop, aren't I?" Mikey replied, enthusiastic as usual.
Don smiled. "That you are, Mikey. Leo..?"
"Look, I'm not gonna throw a shit-fit like Raph just did," Leo told his purple-clad brother, "And I've already told you I want you to be happy. But I'll accept her when I know her."
Don flicked his brother on the forehead, "Firm as always, but fare as well. Thanks, guys."
“Ha, Don, I'm so gonna call you out on the whole girlfriend thing when she's here, so I can see you blush and be all embarrassed and probably hit me with your bo, and then she'll think you're a jerk and she'll like me cause' I'm funny and then I'll have a new girlfriend instead! ...So yeah, Leo. You better be nice!" Mikey laughed on his own, amusing himself as always.
Don rubbed his little brother on his dome, playfully as well. "Whatever you say. I just hope she gets your sense of humour."
