Russel was watching the security monitor as it blanked out to an empty screen. He smiled and his heart quickened with anticipation. He knew that the Batgirl had arrived.
He had set his plan into motion weeks ago after he had first obtained the artifact. Russel was certainly no dummy; he knew over half a dozen coding languages and his IQ was nearly 140. Despite that however the artifact had nearly been beyond him. It had taken him days of concentrated effort to finally interact successfully with it and days more to finally gain some level of proficiency in operating it. Gradually he became comfortable in its use and the bizarre object made its purpose known to him.
It was a strange looking thing, almost like a cube although not quite equal on the sides. It was made of a kind of black metallic substance with what looked like runes or some kind of script on it that could be seen in the right kind of light. His first successes with it came in the form of bursts of inspiration, where he suddenly grasped a concept or had an idea on how to further study the object.
Eventually it became obvious to him that the device, if it could be called that, was operating on a psychic level with him, interacting with his biology despite it being seemingly technological. As he understood this he was able to go further, sliding deep into meditative states with the object in his lap, hands holding on to it gently.
He was shocked when the true nature of the artifact became known. It had been constructed by none other than Brainiac, the dreaded alien super villain who had been a longtime threat to the earth and all of humanity. Only the efforts of Superman himself and the Justice League had been able to thwart the alien menace over the years. It was common knowledge that Brainiac had been killed last year in a bid for universal dominance and this fact reassured Russel in his use of the device.
It seemed as if the artifact had been built as some sort of fail safe. He wasn’t sure if it was even completed. Nevertheless it offered stunning powers to anyone who held it. As Russel continued his experiments it became clear to him that he had gained at least one of the abilities of Brainiac himself.
Technopathy. While holding the artifact and channelling its powers he was now able to actually interface with computer systems using his mind! It was almost too unimaginable to believe, but he had proved it to himself multiple times now. He had already been a decent hacker, but now compared to before he had truly limitless capabilities. As a test of his newfound abilities he launched his consciousness into the cyber ether. He effortlessly cracked the United States military’s most advanced encryption. He broke into the Lexcorp servers with ease. He felt almost delirious with excitement. With this kind of power he could do anything! He could crash the entire financial system, he could access nuclear weapons. The world could be his!
He had not gotten to where he was in life by being brash however. With an effort he reigned himself in and tried to think logically. Russel was a small time criminal in Gotham city, essentially a nobody, at least as far as the papers were concerned. While the more colourful villains like Joker or Two Face commanded headlines with regularity, he found there was more profit to be had in the shadows. Embezzling money. Washing it in offshore shell companies. Small time cyber crime. Business dealings with the established crime families of Gotham. Mostly white collar stuff. He had operated successfully for years and not once had the Batman or any of the other vigilantes in Gotham paid him a visit. They seemed to mostly go after the violent criminals, and thanks to that he had been able to flourish over the years and profit quietly. It didn’t make sense to use the artifact in a way that would attract any attention that he didn’t want, no matter how powerful it made him.
So he had waited and continued to learn about the device that would change his life. He had good reason to believe that the artifact may lend him additional abilities, and as more days went on he learned that he was right.
The alien device had indeed been able to augment him physically. He had been very careful as he did this, afraid that the artifact may change him in unexpected ways, or even take possession of him. There were many accounts of Brainiac being able to take control of peoples minds and Russel had been very leery of this. None of this happened however, and bit by little bit he had changed himself in beneficial ways. He had moderately increased his muscle mass and bone density. He quickened his reflexes generously. He made some upgrades to his cardiovascular and nervous system. All his senses he made a little better. He opted to go slow with the changes, not wanting to lose who he was, but now even though he was 43 years old, he felt as virile and strong as when he was 20.
Another monitor blinked out to blackness. This one watching the hallway that lead to the room where he was standing. She was disabling his cameras as she went and would be here soon.
A few days ago he had again interfaced with the artifact, and using the alien technology he had penetrated the Batmans computer system. It had the finest security measures in the world but even that had not been enough to stop him. In a moment Russel gained access to all of the Batmans secrets. His true identity, that of billionaire Bruce Wayne. His whereabouts. The identities of all his allies. All kinds of secrets about Gotham city, other super heroes and super villains that would take him months to properly go through. He didn’t act on any of the information however, instead opting to observe in secret for now.
Finally, this morning he had decided to make his move. He broke into the Oracle network. It was just as advanced as the Batmans own, and in many ways more refined. By now he knew that the Oracle and Batgirl were one and the same person, Barbara Gordon, and he finally felt confident enough to attract her attention directly.
He planted destructive viruses into her system, corrupting much of it and rendering most of it useless. He stopped short of destroying it outright however as he wanted to be caught. As she had no way of countering his software attack he was sure she would engage him as the Batgirl, which was what he really wanted. Leaving a trail of digital breadcrumbs that he was sure the crime fighter would be able to follow, he led her back to his own hideout. And now, only a few hours later, she had arrived.
He turned to face the door in his office. She would be here any moment now and then she would be his. Like many members of Gothams criminal underbelly he had lusted after the costumed redhead ever since she had appeared on the scene and he knew he wasn’t the only one. She was a beautiful young woman, daring and skillful and intelligent. And now he would be able to do something most men could only ever dream of: he was going to fuck the living shit out of Batgirl.
