Disclaimer: The comics Archie and Co, with its plot, characters, setting, etc does not belong to me. I guess they belong to John L. Goldwater, and a few others but I'm unsure. I make nothing by writing this fiction, and I don't plan to. |
A/N: So, I began writing this a while back, actually. And I thought – this is a fantastic idea! Little did I know, as I found out recently, this is an idea that has been similarly written several times on this site. Therefore, I want to apologize beforehand – I don't mean this story to be so similar to any others on the site, and I'm sorry if it seems uncanny to you! I promise I'll try to express it in as different a manner as possible.
Also, the smut doesn't come till chapter 6, sorry! Had to set it up first. I promise once it's here, it'll continue for a while. Please be patient with me.Chapter 1
Betty's sigh was expelled as a long, drawn-out exhale. Even though she wanted to let out more than just a sigh, wanted to let out tears and sobs and 'Why me?!' cries, she had to control herself. She was in a public place. She had a reputation to uphold. The sigh would suffice.
She tried to distract herself, watching people pass by, popcorn and soda in hand, arms linked at the elbows. Girlfriends, mainly, or guys with their girlfriends. Guy friends didn't link elbows, of course, but still. At least they had companions. This thought depressed her, and she looked away... Towards something that did distract her from her problems.
A scene.
“Reggie Mantle, you two-timer!” Slap! The sound of flesh smacking against flesh practically resounded around the lobby of the cinema. Betty should have been more shocked, she knew, but truth be told she was more surprised there were only two this time.
“Aw, c'mon Gwen!” The dark haired teen tried to implore his date, his right hand cradling the red handprint on his cheek. Seeing her stomp off with no intention of finishing their date, he turned back to the pretty redhead, whose arms were crossed over her chest and her toes tapping on the ground. As if that wasn't indication enough of how pissed she must be, the face was a dead give-away.
But Reggie paid it no heed. It was like the guy had a death-wish.
Betty saw this slap coming seconds before it did, and winced accordingly, especially when the girl found that the slap was insufficient and stepped on his toes too. He howled, hopping around on one leg, one arm outstretched toward the receding back of the redhead.
“Kell- Fine! Just walk away! You'll regret this! You'll regret the day you walked away from the Great Mantle!” Reggie said, still hopping around and nursing his hurt foot. The red handprints looked like tattoos on either cheek, and Betty wondered if they may be as permanent. She watched Reggie, somehow feeling loads better about her situation. Though the thought of two-timing did make her ache somewhere within her chest.
He cursed once more, testing his toes, before braving a look around at the people giggling and staring at him. Coincidentally, his eyes crossed a familiar blonde's. Betty looked away politely, pretending she hadn't been staring at the whole scene. She stared at the guy behind the counter handing popcorn to a pigtailed girl instead, smiling as she watched the little girl hold the bowl of popcorn like a bowl of diamonds.
Even with her attention elsewhere, however, she couldn't say she was surprised when she felt someone sit beside her, and a glance to the side revealed that it was her schoolmate and resident trickster.
“You were watching, huh, Blondie?”
“Not really...” Betty tried to say.
“Can I have that?” He asked, pointing to the drink she'd bought while waiting. She didn't hesitate long, handing the large, half-filled paper cup to her friend. He sighed in relief as he placed the cold, wet surface of the cup against his cheek.
She shook her head to herself, unable to hide the smile. “Why do you do this to yourself, Reggie?”
“I can't help it if all the girls want a piece of me. Why can't they understand that I don't mind being shared?”
“I don't think that's the problem,” She remarked.
“Eh,” Reggie said, shrugging. “So why are you here, Blondie? Got a hot date coming up? Am I in the way?” He looked around warily, as if expecting a huge, buff guy to jump out of one of the potted plants and beat him up for talking to Betty.
Betty giggled at his fearful look, before reassuring him. “I was supposed to have a date,” She confirmed. “But he's not coming,”
Reggie's black eyebrow rose at this. “He stood you up?”
She gave a small smile and shrugged, then glanced to the side, hoping Reggie would leave it at that or she would start bawling her eyes out.
“It's Carrot-top you're waiting for, isn't it?” The question was a rhetoric. No one knew Betty's problems more clearly than Reggie. He sighed when she remained silent, knowing that was a confirmation. “Why do you do this to yourself, Blondie?” He asked, the words were supposed to be mocking, but she knew from his tone that it came from genuine bafflement and this sparked something in her.
“As if you don't, Reggie? Isn't it because Archie's with Ronnie tonight that all that-” she gestured to where the scene occurred. “-happened?” Something went off in his eyes and she knew she had hit the nail on the head. And this made her feel rotten. “Sorry, Reg. I didn't mean to-”
“No. You're right,” She stared at him in surprise. She never expected him to admit that.
They were silent as he nursed his cheeks with her drink, and she stared at the people walking in and out, having a great time.
“Love sucks,” Reggie remarked, which surprised Betty even more. Was he implying that he loved-? Well, that'd probably be the closest he'd ever get to confessing how much he loved Ronnie. She smiled, happy that he could confide in her.
“Yeah it does,” She agreed, looking towards the door at all the people entering, part of her still hoping he would remember their date and come.
Silence pervaded the air for moments, and they sat together in the quiet.
“Wanna watch a movie?” He asked, and a glance at him made Betty realise he was smiling at her, trying to cheer her up. He knew what she had been looking for.
She hesitated. “I don't know, Reg...”
“Come on, it'll take your mind off things. And it'll take mine off my battle wounds,” He said, pointing to his cheeks. She laughed as he got to his feet.
“Sure,” She said, taking the hand he offered her to pull her up.
They bought tickets to an action movie after much argument. Betty wanted to see the romance, and he wanted to see the horror. So they compromised and went with an action movie instead. As always, Reggie was a total gentleman. He offered to pay for the tickets, though she declined – she couldn't let him bear all the costs. She wasn't that type of girl. And after he'd seen her to her seat, he disappeared, then came back with a huge bucket of popcorn and a drink. With one straw. She rolled her eyes and ignored the indirect kiss comments he made.
It should have been awkward, but it wasn't. The movie was riveting, anxiety-building and they loved every moment of it.
Neither wanted it to end.
“Hey, Blondie, you want to take a drive in my new ride?” He asked. She contemplated it. Reggie was a good date, no doubt about that, but her feelings for him weren't exactly one of romance. Sensing her hesitation, he brandished a set of keys before her eyes, then pressed a button. The double beep from the shiny sports car parked before the cinema gave her the final push.
“Sure,” She said, and when they got there he opened the door for her, sweeping his arm towards the seat chivalrously. “Thank you,”
"No problem,”
Despite what she had expected, their drive wasn't a silent one. They talked about everything from phones to the weather, and even had a silly moment over-acting out a popular song that had played on the radio. It made Betty miss talking to him. Why hadn't she talked to Reg more regularly? He was a great guy to hang out with – nasty tricks aside. All the while Reggie drove slowly along a scenic route.
She blinked when, after the song, she realized she didn't know where they were.
“We're here,” She stared at Reggie in surprise as he pulled up beside the road, on the edge of a cliff overlooking the town in which they lived. “I always thought Riverdale looked best when I was looking down on it,” Betty rolled her eyes at this comment.
“It is nice,” Betty conceded, Riverdale wasn't a particularly bright town, not like those big cities, but there were enough lights to identify it by, and seem beautiful.
“Makes you forget about everything, don't it?” Reggie asked, and in his expression Betty could see the fondness Reggie had for his town. As mean and as big of a joker he was, she knew that he really did love their town.
“Yes, it does,”
“Even about... them,” Betty didn't reply. She knew what he was getting to perfectly well, and it ruined the moment for her, to be reminded about their loves. Images of Ron and Archie sitting together in front of her personal cinema, with surround sound and all the latest technology, whispering sweet nothings to each other and making out... It made her feel sick. That it would be Ron kissing Archie and not her. “I just wanna split them up...” Reggie suddenly commented, dragging Betty from her thoughts. Betty gasped, spinning around to face him.
“Reggie!” He raised an eyebrow at her outburst, and she ended up nervously giggling. Because even though her niceness prevented her from doing such a thing – most of the time – she was always thinking about it.
“Don't give me that, Blondie. You know we can help each other. You want him, I want her,” His words were like poison, each one infecting her brain. “Come on. It'd be a good alliance,” Before she knew it, she was seriously considering his offer.
“I don't know, Reg...”
“Betty. We're in our last year of high school. Who knows where we'll end up next year? It's important to make your mark on him now, before he goes off wherever with whoever. You have to make him yours now,” Betty imagined that how she felt was how Eve did when the serpent was tempting her with that fruit.
And Betty knew clearly what happened with Eve and the serpent.
“Come on, Blondie. It won't be anything too serious... Just a little prank here and there... Nothing to feel guilty about...”
Betty remained silent, and Reg joined her, knowing she was on the border of agreeing to his plan.
A minute passed, before Betty answered. “...Alright. Let's do this,”
A grin, mischievous though it was, spread across Reggie's face. He held out his hand, and she shook it without a moment's hesitation. She'd made her decision. Whether it would save her or doom her, it'd be better than doing nothing.
“We'll get them, Blondie, don't you worry,” Reggie said, as if he'd read her mind. She smiled up at him.
Slowly, she found herself convinced that he was right. They would succeed.
