Chapter 1: A Dark Alley and a Bad Idea
Raphael sat on a rooftop high above New York. He took a deep breath, enjoying the smog. He loved this city. He made everyone believe that he couldn’t love anything, but he did. He loved Splinter. He loved his brothers (if sometimes grudgingly). And God, he loved his city. There was nothing more beautiful to Raph than a New York night. Even now, in late October, as the weather turned cold, he liked nothing better than to be outside.
Unfortunately, he could only be outside at night. Raph sighed, shifting into a lotus position. He took a few deep breaths. He could feel anger welling up in him at the thought of his life, and how restricted it was. When a guy can’t even go out in the sun -
He stopped himself. His blood was beginning to boil, and that was never a good sign. Raphael stood, and began leading himself through basic ninjitsu exercises. Maybe if he busied his body, his mind would calm.
It had actually begun to work, when he heard a girl scream.
-Crap-, he thought. Raph went to the ledge and looked down. A girl was being cornered in an alley by a couple of drunken assholes who’d just left a bar. Was it last call already? Raph realized he’d been out for over five hours. Another scream directed his attention back to the girl. All he could see of her was red hair. The two men grabbed for her, and before Raph could make his way down to the street, one hit her over the head with a bottle. Intense, irrational rage filled Raph as he catapulted to the street, landing directly on top of one of the men. He kicked the other square in the chin before he had time to react. Then, Raph grabbed the unconscious girl, slung her over his shoulder, and made for the nearest manhole.
Raph carried the girl through the sewers, towards the home he and his family shared. It took him nearly twenty minutes, but the girl still didn’t wake up. That worried him. What if she had a concussion, and Donny couldn’t treat her in time.
And then, just as he reached the door, a thought occurred to him. Why hadn’t he just taken her to a hospital?
“Motherfuck!” he swore aloud, sending his brothers running to the entrance.
“Raph, what the hell…? Donny said as he came running up.
He handed the girl to Donny, saying in a rush, “Jesus, Donny, she got hit in the head real bad, and I’m so stupid, I didn’t even think to take her to a hospital -”
“It’s okay, Raph, I got her.” Donatello hurried the girl out of the room, directly to his lab.
Raph stared after them, fuming. What was wrong with him? She could die now, all because he was too stupid to know what to do. He felt a wet warmth on his shoulder and jumped, ready to fight.
But it was just Michelangelo. He had a rag in his hands, and was looking uncharacteristically somber. “You’ve…” he began, sounding very NOT Mikey-like, “you’ve got blood on your shoulder, dude.”
“I do?” Raph asked, glancing.
“Yeah, bro. A lot of it.” Mikey sounded scared.
“Gimme the rag,” Raph said, pulling it away from his brother with unnecessary force. “Go help Donny.” Mikey nodded, knowing it was better not to argue with Raph when he mad.
Raphael scrubbed angrily at the dark red staining his shoulder. He was so furious with himself he couldn’t see straight. He dropped the rag and punched the wall, trying to calm down. He didn’t really register the pain, but he did see the crack in the stone. -Shit, I need to calm down-, he told himself. He took a few deep breaths, willing himself to be still. It worked - barely.
After several minutes, Raph felt calm enough to go see about the girl. He went to Don’s room, and found all three of his brothers, AND Splinter, watching.
The girl was laid out on Don’s bed. Her head wound had been cleaned, and Raph could see that it wasn’t actually that bad. Head wounds bleed like hell, he knew, so even a tiny one could seem horrific. All were silent as Donny tended to the girl. Finally, he moved aside, and said quietly, “She not technically unconscious anymore, guys. She woke up just long enough to fall into actual sleep. She’ll be fine.”
“What do we do with her, Master?” Raph asked Splinter, his voice cracking.
Splinter waited several long moments before replying, “We will let her sleep. When she awakens…” he shrugged. “We shall see.”
Raph nodded. The other guys began to leave the room silently, leaving just Raph, Donny, and the girl. Raph moved closer, finally getting a good look at her.
Her hair was dyed red, so red it - well, so red it matched him. It was long a straight, and so shiny it didn’t seem real. Her skin was peach-colored and flawless. She was built like a belly-dancer, all hips and curves. She wore black, pin-striped trousers, a white, silk button-down blouse, and high-heeled boots. She was dressed really nice for having been wandering around in a dark alley.
Raph reached down and brushed a lock of hair off her face. She was beautiful. He was used to beauty - after all, April was gorgeous - but this girl’s was beauty of a different sort. She was young, maybe 18, and Raph wasn’t used to girls his age. April had a cool, worldly-ness about her, but this girl’s face seemed almost - innocent.
“Hey,” came Donny’s soft voice. “It’s not your fault.”
Raph sighed. “I know.”

Sadie awoke to a pounding headache. She kept her eyes squeezed shut and groaned, trying to remember what had happened. She’d been in that alley, trying to get away from those two ass-fuckers who’d followed her out of the bar. Why did she let her cousin talk her into that bar? Or the fake ID? Or any of it? Hell, why did she let her cousin talk her into New York? Sadie groaned again as a wave of nausea hit her. She’d been in the alley, with those two guys, and the one had hit her on the head, and then -
Sadie gasped and sat up. What the hell did they do to her? She glanced around in panic as her skull pounded and her stomach rolled. Large green smears hovered in her vision, probably not one of her attackers, saying, “Donny, she doesn’t look too good, man.”
“Hold onto her,” another voice said.
Sadie felt strong, heavy, thick hands on her arms. The hands felt strange, and Sadie blinked rapidly, trying to focus. Her vision swam, then cleared slightly. No, wait, her vision couldn’t be clear. Because otherwise she was being held by a five foot tall lizard. Sadie struggled against the thing’s grip, but it was too strong. The first voice spoke again, and she realized it was coming from… whatever it was that was holding her. “Calm down, doll, you’re going to make yourself sick.”
Sadie took a deep breath, trying to calm down, as it told her. Why she was obeying a lizard, she didn’t know, but it seemed like the right thing to do.
“Good girl,” the voice said. Sadie’s blinked rapidly again, and her vision was cleared completely.
Sitting on the bed in front of her, holding onto her arms, was a turtle. But he was big, her size, and his black eyes shone with human intelligence. He wore a red bandana over his face, like a mask, with eyeholes cut into it. Sadie took a deep breath and tried to speak. “What…?” It came out as a breathy whisper.
“Shh,” said the other voice, and Sadie turned her head, earning a wave of nausea for her troubles. Another large turtle, this one in purple, sat at a desk covered in electronics. “Don’t overexert yourself. You took a wicked knock to the head. Just try and relax.”
“My name is Raphael,” said the turtle holding her. She turned back to look at him. “You can call me Raph. My brother over there is Donatello - Donny.”
“Raph,” Sadie managed.
He smiled. Sadie didn’t know turtles could smile. “Yeah,” he said. “What’s your name, doll face?”
“S - Sadie,” she replied. Her nausea was dissipating, though her headache remained. “Sadie Corwin.”
“Kay, Sadie, we’re gonna keep you here until you’re feeling better, okay?” Raphael told her.
“How - turtle?” Sadie squeaked, knowing she sounded stupid and not really caring.
Raph laughed, but it was a humorless sound. “Yeah, um… I’ll explain that later. Just lay back and try to rest. Okay?”
Sadie nodded. She let him lower her back down to the bed. As he took his hands away, she realized he only had three fingers. No wonder his grip on her arms had felt strange. Another green hand appeared in front of her face, holding a small vial. Sadie looked up and saw the other one, Donatello, above her. “Drink this,” he said. “It’ll help with the headache.”
Sadie did as she was told. Whatever he gave her tasted horrible, but the pounding in her skull lessened almost immediately. Her head fell back onto the pillow, and she drifted off to sleep.
