Chapter One – Hero
Flipping through his scrap book, Aqua turtle’s eyes lit up with excitement over his knew addiction. Nightwatcher had become his new superhero, over all the others he had read it about, Nightwatcher made it real to him; knowing that heroes are truly out there. It had been a long day for him, and he spent his nightly hours reading comic books that Casey or April would buy for him, or ones he’d buy for himself. The following day would be his day off, so that made his plan a lot easier to execute. His plan was to go search for the Nightwatcher himself, and have him sign his scrap book, and possibly find out who he is.
Mikey wanted to know what areas to search in, and where the Nightwatcher hung out as well. He begged for Donny’s help on that, for something that would be able to track him down. Purple said he would need a piece of his clothing, or item the Nightwatcher carried, before he’d be able to make a system to track him like that. Orange grumbled knowing he had neither, and had to find him alone. So he made sure to take a tracking device to place on him, and took a police radio knowing he’d be following all the latest break-ins.
Grabbing his keys to the van, he headed out. Sure his ride was noticeable, but he’d be hiding it as soon as he was somewhere he thought the Nightwatcher would be looking for trouble. Heading for the door Mikey didn’t notice purple watching him as he went. He sighed heavily. He didn’t want his brother disappointment if he didn’t run into Nightwatcher. Taking this time to get all wise at Mikey, Donny rushed over to him.
“Hey Mikey…” Donny voice trailed off as he approached him.
“Yeah…” Mikey asked wondering what the purple clad turtle wanted. Don’s hazel eyes looked at Mikey’s and sighed once more; “I know I can’t stop you, but please be careful. If you do find him, contact me at once, so I know you’re safe; “Since Raph’s been gone most nights, and you’re gone most mornings. I’m pretty much board out of my skull.” Don told him honestly. Aqua turtle smiled; “I promise to contact you. I’ll have my shell cell.” Mikey told him, and headed out of the lair.
The night air was crisp and slightly cold, as sea green turtle got out of the van a few blocks away from the lair. He still hadn’t picked up anything on the radio just yet, but he figured this would take at least a good two to three nights before he ran into him. And without anything else new to read to ease his mind, this was his adventure. Casey had been getting the aqua turtle all the latest news, along with recording the news for him incase someone was crazy enough to video tape the Nightwatcher in the act.
Jumping to the fire escape, Mikey made it to the top of the building. Rumbling through his bag, he took out his binoculars searching the roof tops. Smoke pipes spilled smoke into the air, making it cast a foggy mist around him. The night sky was clear and black, making it easier to see every single star in the sky, which was not something you’d see every night in New York.
Changing the channel again on the radio he listened intently, and jumped to the next building.
Within the next hour Mikey had probably searched throughout the side of the town close to home, and had nothing. Small police problems, but nothing big for the Nightwatcher, he sighed and took out some beef jerky and started eating it with a can of pop. All this searching had made him hungry.
Looking at the time, aqua turtle saw it was about four in the morning, but he still didn’t want to return home just yet. He had a hunch, a deep feeling, and didn’t want to take away what his gut was feeling.
Another hour went by, and just then the radio kicked in; “A break in at New York Bank. We need back up, repeat we need back up.” Reported a cop, orange clad turtle’s face beamed, and knew he wasn’t too far from the citie's bank. This was it; this was his chance to meet the Nightwatcher.
Raph made his way to the call. He really didn’t know what to expect when he got to the bank, but he had a hunch the police would be there soon. Stopping at the side door between the two buildings, he hid his bike between two trash dumpsters, and made his way to the top of the building. It had been a while since his last all night run, and this would help him sleep at night, knowing these slim balls were behind bars where they belonged.
As he reached the top of the building, he saw some windows that sat in the middle. He rushed over to them, to look through. Sure enough about three guys were robbing the bank. Checking them over, they had to be somewhat like ninjas by the way they walked, and were getting the job done.
Mikey finally made it to the bank. Hearing the police far off in the distance still, he climbed the building to be out of sight. Holding Don’s bag he borrowed, he got to the top. Stopping as fast as he reached the top, his breath stopped and all he could was look intently.
Crimson turtle hadn’t noticed the orange clad turtle yet behind him, all he cared about at that moment were those bank robbers. Ten to one they were foot ninjas. Their clan had been running low on money since they destroyed Shredder, and it only seemed like their type of move. Standing slowly, he reached for the window and began to open it.
Orange took this time to get his attention. He knew it was a bad idea, and the guy was probably going to be pissed. Or probably attack him, but aqua turtle didn’t care, he wanted to meet him. Taking a deep breath he stepped forward, and tripped over an air vent that he didn’t see.
Nightwatcher turned around hearing a thud. His eyes went wide in shock. He didn’t know how Mikey found him, or what he was doing here to begin with, but now he had two problems to take care of. The foot and Mikey, which were two very bad combos?
“Ah… Hi…” Mikey waved, shyly at him, as he got up fast. He grabbed his things and took a step closer; “I’m Mikey.” He introduced himself at probably the worst moment he could. Nightwatcher grumbled through is mask. He knew who he was, but Mikey didn’t know that.
“Stay there.” Raph ordered.
Mikey froze at how deep, and dark his voice was, sending a chill down his back. Mikey nodded, and sat down.
Before Red could open the window more, the clan that was left of Shredder’s army had already appeared out of no where on the building. He knew without a doubt there was more, but he hadn’t sniffed them out, he only felt them near hiding in the shadows. He watched Orange take his nun chucks out in attack form. His brother was always good at fighting, but he was unprepared in this battle. Red had already been in a few fights alone with the clan as the Nightwatcher. So he already knew he’d have a few angry pissed off ninjas that wanted revenge. He watched Mikey gulp. Raph was waiting for Orange to say something funny, or blunt, but nothing came from his mouth but utter silence. He’d guess the aqua turtle didn’t know how many enemies or fights he got into alone at night, and wasn’t sure if he’d make it out alone without him there. Raph silently counted how many where around them, and took out his weapons. He’d have to get Mikey and get out of there fast if the fight went down hill. But at that very moment, his stocks just went up higher knowing that Mikey was there, and that made him smile under his mask.
“Alright Mikey, are you in?” Raph asked him in his deep voice. Mikey gulped and looked back at him in surprise; “Yes…” Mikey answered, and they went after the ninjas.
Not far away, Karai stood watching them fight against her clan. She was upset and hated the Nightwatcher with a passion. Now he had one of those blasted turtles helping him. He normally worked alone. This wasn’t like him at all. Taking her two-way radio out Karai paged one of her men.
Downstairs in the bank the walkie talkie broke the silence; “Yes mistress Karai.” Chi said. He had been foot ninja for many years, and had helped Karai after the fall of the Shredder.
“I want you to get the Orange masked turtle. If he means anything to the Nightwatcher we need him as a hostage.” Karai ordered. Chi was surprised that a turtle was out tonight. He hadn’t seen one in a while.
“As you wish;” Chi acknowledged the order, and hung up. Looking over at the other men he grabbed their walkie talkie and paged the men up top; “Have all of them go after the turtle.” He ordered firmly; “Karai’s orders.” He added to make sure they got the point.
The clan surrounding red heard the message, and turned around to face Mikey. Orange truly wasn’t ready for all twelve ninjas attacking him at once. This must have been another ploy to target him, to distract the Nightwatcher. Raph saw what was happening, and yelled angrily through his mask. He didn’t know why they suddenly changed tactics on him, but he wasn’t them getting close to Orange. He jumped in front of Mikey, and took out some smoke pellets and threw them down. Within seconds they were gone from the roof tops…
