The last thing Robin remembered was screaming a determined ‘Titans, go!’ the whole battle was a blur, and now he was alone in this dank, dark cave. The others clearly weren’t there, he had no idea where they were, but he hoped they weren’t in the peril as he felt he was in. Something shifted in the darkness; it wasn’t a clear shape, but a different shade of black.
“Who’s there?” Robin demanded, “Show yourself!” he felt, rather than saw, a shadow approach him. As soon as he could make out the size of his captor, he knew who it was.
“Slade.” He hissed through clenched teeth. “Where are my friends?” He shouted, only now realising that he wasn’t tied up, he jumped to his feet and set himself in an anticipatory stance.
“Your friends are safe; they will awaken shortly in the comfort of the Tower.” Slade’s voice was flat as ever, but Robin suspected that he was amused by something.
“You have not asked why I only took you as my prisoner, when I could have easily destroyed the Teen Titans completely.”
Robin felt a chill creep up his spine; he suspected Slade wanted to use him to bring the Titans down from the inside.
“What ever your plan is, it won’t work.” Robin growled, trying to sound brave.
“My dear Robin, I’m afraid it already has.”
Raven sensed something wasn’t quite right within the tower. She floated off the bed and down the hall, past the other bedrooms listening to the quiet breathing of the other Titans. She didn’t remember falling asleep; in fact she didn’t remember the end of the battle. As far as her memory could judge, either they’d finished the fight and been left so exhausted that they’d all gone straight to bed, or… they’d lost the fight and had been returned to the tower for some reason. Panic welled in her stomach, what had been done to them? Had the strange robot-thing they’d been fighting, put microchips in them or something? Concentrating on her meditation words, Raven mentally scanned her own body; she was unchanged.
She was breathing a sigh of relief as she passed Robin’s room.
Her floating ceased and she fell to the floor.
“Robin.” She muttered to herself, “Robin!” she repeated, louder. The strength of her fear/confusion forced the bedroom door off its hinges. The bed was empty.
Raven was just about to wake the others when her Titan-com beeped at her.
“Y’hello?” She said into the com device.
“Rae? It’s me; I lost my keys can you let me in?” Robin looked and sounded normal, but Raven descended the tower and answered the door with suspicion.
“Robin? Where have you been?” She asked, not finding anything to be distrusted about her friend.
“Can I tell you in the morning? I didn’t get the privilege of being delivered home – I had to walk.”
Raven frowned, but didn’t say anything more. She watched as Robin shuffled into his room and closed the door behind him.
Sighing, she floated back to her own room and fell asleep almost instantly.
Robin woke up, drenched in sweat and panting for breath at six o’clock in the morning after only three hours of sleep. He rolled out of bed and tried to stretch, but his body was bruised and sore and he doubled up, hugging his ribs. Grimacing, he peeled off his sweaty, blood-soaked clothes, rolled them into a ball and threw them into a plastic carrier bag. His mouth tasted of blood, and when he touched his finger to his lips he found them swollen and crusted with blood, his hair was matted to his head with yet more blood, and his torso was purple with bruises and cuts. He stumbled drearily into the shower, turned the water up to hot, then sat on the floor of the cubicle, staring at the opposite wall. After a few minutes he stood up and started washing his hair, feeling a little sick when the shampoo formed a pink lather as it mixed with the blood on his head, but after a thorough wash he was satisfied that he wasn’t bleeding from any of his wounds anymore. He stepped out of the cubicle feeling a little less stiff as he wrapped a towel around his waist.
Robin was feeling a lot more human by the time he’d dried himself off and pulled on some baggy joggers, and an over-sized sweatshirt. His mask was uncomfortable over a swollen black eye, so he decided to discard it for the day.
Nobody else was awake at that point, so he went to the kitchen and made breakfast, bacon seemed to be the order of the day, he threw about ten rashers into a frying pan and stood back to avoid being spattered with hot fat. While he waited for the meat to cook, he boiled the kettle and poured himself a sugary cup of black coffee.
He still felt a little sorry for himself, but just had to keep reminding himself that Slade had kicked his ass a million times before, and this was no different, he would destroy the evil villain one day.
Denial was a fantastic thing.
Less than twenty minutes later Raven glided gracefully into the kitchen, she tilted her head in acknowledgement at Robin by way of a greeting, and then took a bottle of water from the fridge and sat down at the table.
“You’re up early.” She noted, flatly.
Robin grunted in response. Silence followed for another ten minutes.
“You were gonna explain what happened last night?” Raven pressed, not showing any sign of impatience.
“Oh,” Robin finished chewing the last rasher of bacon, “Slade tried to convince me to join him, tried some mind control, we fought and I escaped.” He explained.
“That’s all that happened?”
“Well, I don’t remember how I got there, but aside from that, yeah, that’s all that happened.” Robin didn’t seem too happy about being questioned.
“We should probably give you a check up in the med-lab, to make sure Slade didn’t leave us any nasty surprises.” Raven was quite certain that Robin wasn’t under any kind of mind control, but with Slade you could never be sure, and Robin did seem slightly different…
“Are you okay?” Raven asked, noticing the way Robin wouldn’t quite meet her eyes.
“Yeah, just took a bit of a heavy beating last night. Bones are still healing.” He poured another cup of coffee and took it into the lounge where he laid down on the sofa and turned the television set on.
End of chapter 1
What do you think? I made it too obvious what happened, but I’ll warn you in advance, there will be detailed flashbacks in later chapters. Does anyone want any Rob/Rae? Or shall I keep it platonic for this one? Any ideas anyone has will be considered (retaliation, suicide, mpreg, character death, various pairings, other character involvement, kidnap…) not promising to put them in, but if you have an idea let me know.
