Unexpected
The titans were relaxing at the tower. Crime was slow and the Beast Boy was really starting to get bored. “Dude,” the green titan complained, “let's do something. I’m going to go nuts if something doesn’t happen.” Robin, who had been in his room researching Slade’s whereabouts, walked in.
“Why don’t you rent a movie,” he suggested. “Good idea. Got any requests,” Beast Boy half asked half teased. “Just get something,” Robin said. The green titan got up and left. “When I get back, be ready for a great movie.”
Robin sat on the couch, trying to not think about Slade. “Geez,” Robin moaned, “This is freaking ridiculous.” Robin leaned his head back and looked right up at Starfire. Robin jumped up in surprise. “Starfire, when did you show up?” The Tamaranian apologized; embarrassed that she had shocked her friend. “It’s alright Star. You just surprised me, that’s all.” “Where has Beast Boy gone,” Starfire wanted to know. “He went to get a movie,” Robin said. “I shall prepare some unhealthy snack foods for the evening entertainment,” Starfire said.
So while Beast Boy was getting a movie and Starfire was gathering any snacks, Robin lay on the couch. When Beast Boy came back, Starfire placed piles of junk food on the table, “I shall get the others,” she offered. “I’ll get ‘em,” Robin said getting up, “I haven’t done for a while. And you got this stuff, just relax.” Starfire tried to insist that Robin did more than any of the others but the boy wonder would not cede. “Just let him,” Beast Boy intervened. Two against one, Starfire agreed. The titan leader walked off to get the others. “I think that Robin is under great stress,” Starfire said. “What do you mean,” the green titan said as he looked at the covers of the two movies. “He is so concerned with discovering the identity of Slade that he, oh what is the phrase, works his fingers to the bone.” Beast Boy had to agree with that. Robin did dedicate himself and sometimes seemingly too much.
Robin returned with Cyborg. “Raven doesn’t want to join us,” Cyborg said. “Figures,” Beast Boy said, “What movie should we watch first,” he said changing the subject, “Shogun Seven or The Screamers?” None of the others really cared, “Just chose one,” Robin said as he sat down. Beast Boy slipped in a DVD and walked back to the couch to join the others. “Raven sure that she doesn’t want to join the group,” Beast Boy asked. “You know that she doesn’t care about this stuff,” Cyborg said, “let's just watch.”
When the second movie ended, the titans turned in for the night. “It been kinda quiet lately,” Robin thought in his room. “What is Slade up to?” As much as Robin tried to figure out his nemesis, nothing was coming up. He collapsed onto his bed; his mind racing wondering what Slade could possibly be planning. Robin closed his eyes, visualizing clues and possible plans. But he soon slipped off to sleep, nightmares of Slade haunting his mind.
Early the next day, about 5 am, the towers alarm woke the team. Tired, each of the members assembled in the main room, wondering what the disturbance could be. “Dude, who’s up at this time,” Beast Boy said, his mind still sleeping. Robin typed on the keyboard and bought up a map of the city. “It’s probably Slade,” Robin said looking at Beast Boy, “and it looks like that it somewhere up around the docks.” “Think that he’s made a chronotron detonator,” Cyborg asked. “Not likely,” Robin said, the question opening the old wound of being forced to be Slade’s apprentice, “he doesn’t use the same plan twice. Keeps me wondering.” “We must leave at once to stop him,” Starfire shouted. “Titans move out,” Robin shouted.
When the titans made it to the docks; it was quiet, too quiet. “Dude, I thought that there was something going on here,” Beast Boy said. Cyborg looked at his arm, “Systems normal. Somebody’s here.” The titans looked around, but the long dark shadows hid any movements. Only the squeak of a loose board on the pier caught their attention. “What was that,” Cyborg said turning towards the sound. “Turn on your light,” Robin said. The metal titan illuminated the dock. Nothing. “I could have sworn that I heard something,” Robin said. Again, the sound came, but from another direction, but when the titan turned to see what could have caused the sound, whoever it was disappeared. “Starfire, you and me will head that way,” Robin said pointing down towards the wharf, “Cy, Beast Boy, Raven, you search the warehouses.” The titans split up, agreeing that when the saw anyone, they would contact the others.
While the three titans headed deep into the shadows, Starfire and Robin scoured the dock for anything. “Robin,” Starfire exclaimed, “I believe I found something.” The boy wonder ran over to see what his friend had discovered. There on the wood was a muddy shoeprint. Robin looked at the mark, fresh mud. The perpetrator had relatively small feet and had passed very recently. “Do you know who made this marking of mud,” Starfire asked. “Well it wasn’t Slade,” Robin said looking at the marking. Suddenly, the Robin and Star’s transceivers alerted them that the others found something. “What did you guys find,” Robin asked into his transmitter. “We saw someone by one of the warehouses. When we went to get him, he ran off,” Cyborg said. “So you saw who it was,” Robin asked. “Not exactly,” the metal titan responded, “none of us could really see who it was. But whoever it was small.” Robin looked at his shoeprint. Could it be the same person? “Where are you exactly,” Robin asked. “Next to warehouse number...42,” came the reply. “We’ll be right there,” Robin said as he clicked off. “let's go,” the titan leader said to Starfire. Starfire picked up Robin and flew towards the others.
When the two titans met up with their teammates, they looked around. “Where did whoever you saw go,” the boy wonder asked. “That way,” Raven said pointing down a dark alley. “Cy, Star, give us some light,” Robin ordered. The titans went down the alley, looking for the mysterious figure that Cyborg had seen. “Scanners indicate that he’s in there,” the metal titan said pointing to a shabby, rundown building. Slowly creeping up to a window, Robin peered through the dirty window, barely getting a glimpse inside. Not trusting his eyes, he listened closely. CHRASH!!! The sound of falling boxes inside and the following shouts told Robin exactly who was inside. “You stupid scum muncher,” a voice inside said, “can’t you keep quiet? AAAAH” “What’d you call me,” a gruff voice said. “ Shh, keep it quiet,” a female voice said.
Robin pulled away from the window and turned to his friends. “It’s the H.I.V.E.,” he whispered as he motioned for the team to come over. “Well let's not waste anytime,” Cyborg said deploying his sonic cannon. “Wait,” Robin exclaimed but it was too late. Cyborg fired, blasting away the wall but setting off an explosion. The force knocked the titans back. Cyborg slammed against a wall, knocking him out. The others slowly got to their feet. Looking up, the H.I.V.E. members grinned. “Gotcha you scum brains,” Gizmo taunted, “Metal brain over there has got to be the dumbest dimwit I’ve ever seen.” “Attack pattern Alpha,” Jinx ordered. Not missing a beat, the enemy trio got into formation and attacked.
“Titans go,” Robin shouted. He and Raven went after Jinx, Beast Boy transformed into a T-Rex and went after Mammoth, and Starfire attacked went after the small whiz kid.
“Raven look out,” Robin shouted as pink rays headed towards them. Raven blocked the attack with one hand and used her other to toss a couple of boxes at the pick enchantress. While Jinx was busy trying to dodge Raven’s attack, Robin charged with a power kick to Jinx’s chest. The force sent Jinx skidding across the floor. As she tried to get back to her feet, Raven used her powers to control pipes in the wall to wrap Jinx to the wall. Robin, seeing that Jinx was beaten, ran over to help Beast Boy, who was having some trouble beating the genetically enhanced behemoth.
Meanwhile, Starfire flew above Gizmo to bombard him with her starbolts. But the small H.I.V.E. member activated his holographic doubles. “Na na na na na, you can’t catch me,” Gizmo and his doubles teased. Starfire watched the hoard of Gizmos run around. She tossed a bolt at a couple, but they were mere holographic images. Charging up a wave of starbolts, the Tamaranian blasted at every Gizmo that she saw. Unfortunately, the real enemy was not hit. In fact, he had managed to sneak behind her and blasted her with one of his many ray guns. Knocking her from the air, Starfire slammed into the ground. Turning off his copies, the small enemy sneered over the fallen titan. “Knew you couldn’t beat me snot brai...” but Starfire slowly raised her hand and blasted Gizmo in the chest, causing him to fall on his back, breaking the computer. The resulting electric shock knocked Gizmo out. Starfire tried to get up but could only watch as Robin assisted Beast Boy before she fainted.
Beast Boy changed from one animal to another, trying to gain the upper hand against Mammoth. When Robin came to help the genetic monster seemed to get stronger. “Look out,” Robin shouted as he tossed an electric disc. But as Beast Boy avoided Robin’s weapon, Mammoth’s giant fist threw him into Cyborg, who was slowly trying to get up, putting both titans out of the fight. Raven came to Robin’s rescue. Using her powers, she picked Mammoth up and tossed him into the far wall ending the battle, or so Robin and Raven thought.
Ignored by the titans, Jinx managed to squirm out of her binds. “Your luck is up,” she shouted and released a wave of hex aimed at Raven and Robin. The dark titan was knock under a pile of junk, which acted like a shield against Jinx. Robin however, was in the open. Above him, a sharp piece of metal teetered. Jinx looked at the titan leader. “I could kill him right now, make my name the greatest,” she thought. But she didn’t for some reason. Instead, she managed to drag Mammoth to his feet and had him pick up Gizmo. With none of the HIVE trio in fighting condition, they made a hasty escape.
“What happened,” Beast Boy moaned walking over to help Robin up, his back hurting from slamming into Cyborg’s armor. Robin rubbed his head, the pain throbbing but the injury minor. “I don’t know,” Robin moaned. Raven slowly moved over next to Robin and Beast Boy, “Whatever happened, they’re gone.” “It doesn’t make sense though,” the titan leader reasoned, “Jinx was the last one standing. Why did she leave when she had the upper hand?” None of them had the answer and that’s when they noticed Starfire and Cyborg still unconscious. “We better get them back to the tower,” Robin said. “Dude, my back,” Beast Boy groaned as he rubbed the sore spot. Raven did the honors of teleporting the team back to the tower to give Starfire, Cyborg, and Beast Boy the medical attention they needed.
