Yay for first Teen Titans story! I've recently fell in love with them again (particularly Kid Flash and Speedy *hearts*) and decided to celebrate with a story. The basic premise (as you may have read in the description), the Brotherhood of Evil has returned and cooked up a new plot to rip apart the Titans from the inside out using new and rare technology. However, a switcheroo in the Titans roster coupled with an attack on the Brotherhood by the vengeful Titans East causes some interesting complications. Enjoy the story!
“Two weeks?! Cyborg you can’t possibly be serious!” Robin exclaimed as he slumped down onto the sunken cushions of the couch.
“I’m sorry, Robin, but the Brotherhood really messed this place up,” Cyborg explained sincerely. He moved aside from the middle of the big screen tv so his leader could get a good look at why he had been summoned to the Titans East tower.
The entire building was a complete wreck. Piles of rubble laid strewn about. The computer system was destroyed. Small sparks from the array of frayed wires lit up the beaten up console. Keys from the computers spotted the gnashed metal and surrounding area. The entire main room was torn apart. Robin shuttered to think of what the condition of the rest of the tower was in.
“I know it’s a long time, but it’s not like you’ve gone without me before. Remember I’m the one that lead the building of the place, and the Titans East themselves for awhile,” Cyborg added with a smirk. “But they need my help now more than before. In case you can’t tell, the Titans themselves aren’t exactly chipper at the moment”.
Robin’s mask scrunched up as he squinted to get a view of the Titans East members in the background. Mas and Menos were picking up random debris here and there, but were doing it separately. Usually they’d have all the rooms in the tower spic and span in a matter of minutes together, but they looked too down trodden to even look at each other. Aqualad surfaced from one of the pools of water in the room with a few pieces of sheetrock in his hands. His dark eyes were glazed over in the look of defeat. The team leader, Bumble Bee, was far off from where the Titans communicator could transmit properly, but Robin didn’t need a clear view to see her perfectly. She was lazily sweeping up dust on the floor that just puffed up in clouds in the air instead of going into her dust pan. Her eyes were steadily focused on the ground. She looked absolutely crushed.
“They definitely need you there, Cyborg. Take all the time you need,” Robin allowed. Cyborg nodded, but before he could cut off the transmission, an arm wrapped around him and the masked face of Speedy filled up the screen.
“Hey Robin. Thanks for letting us steal Cyborg for awhile. We’ll send him back to you in one piece. Do you guys use UPS or Fed Ex in Jump City?” Speedy joked. Robin cocked an eyebrow.
“You seem in a good mood, Speedy,” Robin noted.
“Hey, someone has to be. This place is so beat up and so are the people in it. One of us needs to have high spirits to pick everyone else up”.
“I agree, but you? If anyone was going to try to be the pick-me-up, I thought it’d be Bumblebee,” Robin said, grabbing at his chin with his thumb and pointer finger in thought.
“Well, she’s taking the loss the worst. She thinks it’s her fault that the Brotherhood got into the tower. None of us think that though except for her. Until she gets her spirit back, I’ll be the motivator around here. Besides Cyborg here,” Speedy added with a slap to Cyborg’s back which ended up stinging the young archers hand.
“Tell her not to take it too hard and get the team out of their funk. It’ll help the rebuilding process go much faster. Good luck, Titans. Call us if you need us for anything. We’ll be here. Robin out,” Robin terminated the transmission with a smile, which melted away a few moments after the screen went snowy. The masked 18 year old leaned forward, his elbows digging into his knees. He interlocked his green gloved fingers under his chin and stared into nothingness as he thought.
“Two weeks is a long time to go without a fifth member. And with the sudden rise in activity from the Brotherhood, now is not the time to lose anyone, especially our technology expert. What are we-” Robin’s thought was cut off by red flashing lights and an urgent alarm ringing through his ears. He shot up out of his seat.
“Robin, trouble!” Raven announced as she appeared in the sliding doorway, her hood down hiding half of her face. Starfire and Beast Boy appeared behind her.
“Titans! Let’s go!” Robin shouted as he led the way towards the exit.
The ride towards the scene was treacherous. Rain from a storm the night before had made the road slick and dangerous. Robin still chose to take his motorcycle, it being his vehicle of choice. Starfire and Raven flew above and slightly behind him. Trying to keep up with him and keep an eye on their comrade in case the condition of the roads got the best of the Boy Wonder. Beast Boy had taken form of a peregrine falcon and flew slightly ahead of the girls.
They finally arrived after a few minutes. Starfire felt herself finally able to breath. Everyone had made it to their destination without anything going wrong. She heaved a sigh of relief and landed on the ground next to Robin.
“Who is it we are pursuing, Robin?” she asked in her usual innocent and curious manner.
“I’m not sure. All I know is that some guards were taken down outside this warehouse and that we need to put a stop to whatever bad guy is here,” Robin ordered. Focused and ready to fight, Robin lead his team into the warehouse. The smell of burning steel dominated their noses.
“Ack, dude. That reeks!” Beast Boy complained, covering his nose with both hands. “Couldn’t whoever’s here break into a flower shop, or a bakery? Roses and bread smells way better than this!”
Raven rolled her eyes and pushed the green Titan forward. “Keep moving and stop complaining”. The group of four made their way into the warehouse, keeping a sharp ear and eye out for whoever it was that decided to break into the warehouse. It had become evident that they were in the warehouse for a villainous reason. It was a weapons plant. The glowing red hot liquid steel was being poured into gun molds of various shapes and sizes. Robin didn’t like the idea of any of his nemesis’ having fire power. They were troublesome enough without having the lethal yet slightly primitive arms.
“Whoever’s in here is smooth. There’s no other forced entry signs besides the security being knocked out. Nothing seems out of place. Keep your guards up,” Robin advised. Beast Boy shape shifted into a bloodhound and started sniffing at the ground, trying to pick up any scent he could.
Starfire flew up towards the rafters to take a survey of the area. She noticed a shadow appear and disappear quickly a few meters ahead of the Titans. She pointed a slender finger in the direction but before she could say anything, she was sent crashing down to the ground from a sudden heavy weight slamming into her. The Tamaranian was tackled into a stack of large crates, splinters of wood showering the rest of the group.
“Starfire!” Robin yelled as he ran towards to crash site. The rest followed suit but were cut off by more assailants. Beast Boy returned to his human form, his eyes wide in surprise.
“No way!” he exclaimed in a raspy voice. In front of him and Raven stood a group of Slade’s robots. Each one looking exactly like it did years ago when the group fought them almost daily. Before the drones could attack, they were all sliced through the middle by a killer swing from Robin’s fighting staff.
“Snap out of it! We need to take them down!” Robin commanded. “Titans! GO!” A green blast shot out from the crates, sending a good number of the enemies hurdling through the air, followed by Starfire, her eyes and hands glowing bright green.
Raven’s eyes started to glow as well, a black aura surrounded her hands. She turned around, finding herself and Beast Boy surrounded by the robots. Beast Boy transformed into one of his more favored forms. His arms elongated and thickened. Green fur growing all over him, fangs forming in his mouth. Once his gorilla transformation finished, he barreled into the assailants, swinging his arms, sending the Slade mechanical clones flying.
“Azarath Metrion Zinthos!” Raven chanted angrily as black beams shot out of her hands into the horde, making many of the robots explode. After a few moments, the whole crowd was taken down, only Raven and Beast Boy remained standing. Beast Boy pounded his massive gorilla hands proudly on his chest in a show of victory and intimidation before he returned to his human form once again.
“I hate being the monkey in the middle,” he chided with a grin. Raven smirked slightly as she went off to face another group of enemies.
A small circle of the fiends had started to close in on Robin. He twirled his staff in his fingers rapidly a few times before lobbing off a few mechanical heads with a single sweep. After a flurry of kicks, punches and staff swings, he fought off the entire circle.
Or so he thought.
More robots started to appear from behind crates and surrounded him again. He looked over to find his team, which had become surrounded as well. He used his staff to pole vault over the drones and backed up into the rest of the group.
“Don’t give up,” Robin ordered.
“But there’s so many!” Beast Boy whined.
“We’ve defeated them before, we’ll do it again. We’re stronger now,” Robin assured.
“Yeah, but we had Cyborg with us then,” Raven pointed out, her eyes still glowing, black aura at the ready.
“Yes, it would be much easier with our friend here,” Starfire politely agreed.
“We’ll be fine! Titans! G-,” before Robin could finish his sentence, the inner ring of Slade’s lackeys charged the Teen Titans, holding them down. Beast Boy and Robin both felt cold metal hands on the back of their necks then sharp stings. Beast Boy yipped in pain while Robin clenched his teeth and grunted. Raven used her powers to form a bubble shield around the Titans, pushing away their attackers and protecting herself and her comrades from further harm. Starfire rushed to Robin and Beast Boy.
“Are you both okay?! I heard you both emit painful noises!” Starfire yelled, concerned for the well-being of her friends. The two men rubbed the back of their necks and nodded. The pain had subsided so they shrugged it off and got up.
“Robin, we need a plan. I can’t hold up this force field forever,” Raven grunted, trying to fight back each punch and kick the shield took. She was weakening. The rest of the team was hurt. Blood trickled down one of Starfire’s arms from the crate she crashed into earlier. Robin and Beast Boy got to their feet and readied for battle.
“Ok, here’s the plan, we’re going to-”. Just before Robin could expel his plan, his face wilted into a look of tiredness, then the red, green and yellow clad leader toppled over.
“Robin!” Starfire shouted. Raven gasped.
“Beast Boy!”
The slightly younger green changeling went tumbling down to the ground as well, his eyes already closed. He was out cold.
Starfire shook Robin with vigor, trying to get a rise out of him. “Robin! Robin! Wake up!”
The rest of the night came in small flashes to Robin. First he saw Raven’s shield become covered in the Slade ninja-like robots. Raven had to withdraw. The horde lunged at the girls. The next flash was of the girls trying to fight, but obviously losing. Robin could see his hand reaching out to them as a dog pile formed on his friends, then nothing. Next a blur of red and yellow zoomed past, running through the pile like a bowling ball into pins, enemies flying in all directions. Last sight Robin could remember was the blur coming to a halt, revealing the figure of a young man, roughly Robin’s age and height. He looked familiar. Some words were exchange between the man and the girls before the last of the enemies jumped on his back. Then a moan of pain. A blast. Then nothing more.
A/N: I always wanted to write a chapter with someone slipping in and out of consciousness lol. So this story has been bouncing around in my brain for quite awhile and I finally sat my ass down to write it. And so far it's living up to my expectations. I decided to bring back the Brotherhood because I just want to giggle at their reactions when things "aren't going as planned". *snickers* Please R/R and tell me what you think so far! Gotta love BB puns!
