As soon as the titans returned from taking Cinderblock to jail, Robin went straight to his room.
“Is there something wrong with our friend?” Starfire asked the others.
“He’s angry,” Raven said dryly.
“But why? We were successful in defeating our foes and our home is safe.”
“Because Robin doesn’t like to be on the defense,” Cyborg said.
“But surely he can rejoice in victory.”
“Apparently not,” Raven said, “Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to meditate.”
“I shall speak to Robin,” Starfire announced.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea Star. Robin likes to be alone when he feels like he been beat.”
“But he is our friend, we must help him.”
“I just said that I don’t think that it’s a good idea. If you want to fine but I wouldn’t expect him to lay out the welcome mat.”
“I shall go anyways.”
Turning, Starfire left Beast Boy and Cyborg to play their video games. For her, the only concern now was Robin. She knew what the others had said was true. When Robin had abused their trust, he stayed in his room unless there was some crime occurring. He had felt defeated. She couldn’t, wouldn’t let it happen again. As his friend, she felt that it was her obligation to lift his spirits, get him back on his feet.
At his door, she felt nervous. What would Robin say? How upset was he? Why exactly? The only way to get the answer was to ask him. Slowly raising a hand to knock, she began to have second thoughts. What if he was on the break of figuring out where Slade was or at least on the trail of his plans? Her interruption could drive him further away and deeper into despair. She couldn’t risk it. If she wanted to help, the best thing that she could do was to stay out of the way. Walking away, she turned to the closed door, wishing the best for her friend.
In his room, Robin held his face in his hands. Why had Slade sent Cinderblock? Why couldn’t he beat him? “I need more training,” Robin thought, “I’m getting soft.” Sneaking out of his room, he saw Starfire walking away from him.
“Why was she over here?” Robin thought, “Her room is on the other side of the tower.”
Starfire glanced one more time and saw the titan leader exit his room.
“Robin,” she exclaimed running towards him.
“Hi Star. What’s going on?”
“I was worried about you.”
“Me? Why?”
“Because although we were victorious in defending our home, you seem to be very upset. Please tell me what is troubling you.”
“Slade,” Robin answered, his voice carrying his depression.
“How is Slade bothering you? We defeated him.”
“But I still don’t know what he’s up to. With him it like I’m always a step behind.”
“Perhaps you need to rest?”
“I can’t. The reason that I came out of my room was so I could get some training in before dinner.”
Starfire watched as Robin walked away from her. She could feel a deep sense of hurt in her heart. “I wish the best for you,” the Tameranian whispered as the titan leader left her presence.
In the gym, Robin worked his rage out on the punching bags. Every punch, every kick, he envisioned Slade standing in front of him. How great it would feel when he brought his nemesis to his knees.
“SLADE!” he shouted as he punched the bag, “I WILL STOP YOU.”
Every moment that Robin spent alone, the farther he drifted from the group or so Starfire believed. Concern gripped her as she heard his yelling from the training room. The others were also worried, but it didn’t come close to the Tameranian’s fears. After what seemed like eternity to the rest of the titans, Robin came downstairs, his demeanor slightly more hospitable.
“You want dinner?” Cyborg asked, “BB’s cooking. If you can call it that.”
“Hey,” the green titan defended, “Its food.”
“It’s not food. Food has flavors of its own. Your stuff doesn’t.”
“Well I don’t complain every time you make dinner.”
“No? Well then I guess there was one time about a month ago!”
“Shut up,” Raven said glancing up from her book briefly.
“We’re having a conversation here,” Beast Boy shouted.
“Yelling at each other is hardly a conversation. You two argue so much I’m actually surprised both of you are still alive.”
Cyborg and Beast Boy looked at each other. They would never kill each other. Was Raven implying that they would? Or were close to it?
“I wouldn’t do that,” both Beast Boy and Cyborg said in unison.
“Like I said, I’m actually surprised.”
“How about we get some pizzas,” Robin said looking over what was in the fridge.
“Dude, am I cooking or not?”
“You’re the only one that eats tofu,” Cyborg said.
“Just cause you don’t like it does not mean that nobody else will,” Beast Boy shouted back.
“That stuff is crap and you know it.”
“Look, we get a couple pizzas and you two can just shut the fuck up!” Robin yelled.
The other titans just stared at Robin.
“Are you ok Robin?” Starfire asked concerned.
“No!”
Starfire backed off, tears starting to well up in her eyes.
“Star wait. Star!”
But it was too late. She had already left. Settling on the floor, Robin reflected on what he had become. He couldn’t relax ever, he didn’t have fun easily, and now he had just hurt Starfire’s feelings. Of all the titans that he shrugged off, it had to be her. Why? She was the kindest, most gentle person that he ever met. Robin stared down at the floor, ignoring everything around him. Taking deep breaths, he held his composer and went to Starfire’s room to apologize. “It’s the least that I can do,” Robin thought as he climbed the stairs.
Standing in front of the Tameranian’s room, he raised a hand to knock.
“Just do this,” Robin told himself.
Knocking, he waited from Starfire to answer.
“Who is there?” a soft voice asked.
“Star? It’s me.”
“What is it now? Slade back?” Starfire asked in anger as tears shimmered on her face.
“No. I wanted to say that I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I’m just so upset. Please Star. Forgive me?”
“I shall,” Starfire answered softly, showing the pain that his outburst had really cause.
“Do you want to get something to eat then? I think that the others are ok with pizza.”
“You will not be getting upset again?”
“Not like that, no.”
“Then let us return to the others,” Starfire said as she headed downstairs again.
“So you guys all better now?” Cyborg asked impatiently.
“I think we’re good now. Lets get some pizzas.”
“’Bout time that you guys calm down,” Raven said setting down her book.
“This coming from—” Cyborg stopped mid sentence when Raven stared him down. “Lets go.”
As the titans sped down the streets, Robin’s mind was still on Slade and what possible plans were going to be used. Even when the others were with him and he was getting something to eat, he still focused solely on stopping Slade. What none of the titans realized was that they were closer to Slade then they thought. Standing on the rooftops, the evil master watched the t-car as it headed towards their common destination.
“Just a little farther,” he said to himself as he held his hand on a detonator. As soon as the titans stopped at the light just before turning, Slade pressed the button and an explosion took the titans to the underground.
When they got acclimated to the darkness, the titans realized that they were not alone. Standing around them was Cinderblock and Overload. But they didn’t attack. It was like they were waiting for something. It was Robin who noticed why. One both their chests was one of Slade’s neural controllers. Getting out of the car, the titans were ready for the attack.
“Hello Robin,” Slade said stepping out of the shadows.
“Slade,” Robin muttered as he prepared for the anticipated attack.
“This time there is no second chance.”
“I don’t need one.”
“Overload, Cinderblock. Leave Robin to me, the others are yours.”
With their orders, the two behemoth-like villains attacked. Slade himself went for Robin.
Reaching for his staff, Robin split it in half and used the two small weapons to attempt to beat his nemesis. Slade grabbed his own staff and the two martial artists collided. Steel on steel, the two enemies fought hammer and tong. The hate that Robin felt caused his body to ignore the pain as his muscles cried out. Sweat poured down his face as he blocked several attacks. His breathing grew heavy as he felt his arms starting to give out. He couldn’t lose this battle. This was his opportunity to get revenge on Slade for the countless hours that he spent trying figure out the cryptic clues and long nights that he wasted. As Slade kicked him back to a wall, he reached for two discs like he had down when fighting the robotic counterpart. Throwing them with all the force and fury that ran through his veins, Robin expected the battle to be ended right there. But just before his weapons where about to collide with Slade, the villain master seemed to press something on his wrist. Whatever it was, the result was all that mattered. Instead of freezing Slade in place, the ice seemed to create a bubble around him.
“What the fuck?” Robin shouted in frustration.
“You seemed surprised Robin. Did you think that I would be so easy? My robot served his purpose perfectly.”
That was the reason for the previous attack. He was seeing what desperation tactics Robin would use, and Robin had fallen for it. The titan leader was furious and leaped to kick Slade square in the chest. Shattering the ice encasing, Robin felt his foot collide with Slade. Finally, he achieved a powerful strike against the one that was the center of his hate.
“Its over Slade,” Robin said as he slowly walked towards him.
Slade started to laugh as he rose to his feet.
“Robin, you think knocking me to the ground once counts as a victory? How many times have I brought you to the ground? How many? More then you could possibly remember. If that was victory, you have lost far too many for it to count. And besides, look at your friends.”
Glancing back, he saw the others being overwhelmed. As he tried to run to help his fellow titans Slade grabbed his cape and pulled him back, bringing the boy wonder to the ground. Delaying his response, Robin hoped to get Slade off guard. Waiting for his moment, he swept low and almost knocked Slade down. Looking up, he stared directly into the barrel of a gun. In a flash, he saw his life. The day that he met Starfire, the day the titans had been formed, the first time that he had saved his friends, the times they saved him, and their arguments. It didn’t matter now. It was over. Slade had been better then him and it was all over. He wouldn’t have to face humiliation again. No more arguments, no more fights, no more seeing Starfire. Breaking down for the first time in what seemed like ages, a few tears finally dropped from his eyes.
“Robin!” Starfire screamed coming over to save him.
But she missed him by mere seconds. In the time that it took her to breakaway from her battle and get over to the titan leader, Slade pulled the trigger. There was a loud bang and light seemed to flash before everyone’s eyes. When it returned to the dim state, all that remained of where Robin had been kneeling was a small scorching on the floor.
“NO!” Starfire screamed, crying for the loss of her friend.
“Its over,” Slade said, “Soon enough I will come for the rest of you.”
Anger, misery, and hate mixed inside Starfire as she watched the evil trio leave. Why not just end it now? Why put her through losing such a good friend? But Robin was more then that to her. They had their problems but they were happy for the most part in each other’s company. Now it was over. Rising to her feet, Starfire gave chase, planning on returning the favor. But she only managed to apprehend Cinderblock. Just like Robin had worked his rage out in the gym, Starfire pounded down on the rock monster. Knocking it into a state of unconsciousness, the Tameranian finally walked away from the fight and flew back to the tower, leaving the others to take care of the fallen villain.
