“Good Evening, Ladies and Gentlemen…”
The sound of laser shots pierced the night air as nearly everyone immediately dropped to the ground, fearful of their lives. The only ones left standing were 6 menacing figures dressed in clown outfits who calmly walked towards in on the soiree being thrown. The Jokerz were notorious party crashers, and tonight’s WayneTech Fundraiser was no different. Their leader was the one holding the recently-fired gun, wearing a purple suit with his dark green hair slicked back to a pompadour. White makeup adorned most of his face, leaving only his mouth untouched.
“…We are tonight’s entertainment!” He continued, before laughing maniacally. “Now I’m sorry to say that we’ll be requiring our payment up front…so hand over your goods!”
On their leader’s orders, two members of the gang, Coe & Smirk, both went around with brown sacks to collect the guests’ valuables. Watches, bracelets, necklaces were all dropped into the bag, as the gang made their rounds. But when the leader caught glimpse of Gotham City’s Police Commissioner, his boldness skyrocketed.
“Commissioner Gordon! Looks like you picked the wrong party tonight, toots!”
“Not really.” Barbara replied calmly. “J-Man, is it? I’m guessing in a few seconds you’re gonna regret even showing up here.”
J-Man responded by with a trademark Joker laugh, though not as chilling as the original. “You just keep telling yourself that, while I help myself to that necklace!”
He reached out for her neck, only to be surprised by her reflexes as she stopped his hand cold. “That’s not gonna happen.”
“Ooh, feisty!” He commented. “I like that.”
“Then you’re gonna love me.”
THWACK!!!!!
It happened so fast, his fellow Jokerz were only able to see his body flying through the air, before crashing down onto a buffet table, with the whole buffet landing on him. A moment later, they saw the reason their fearless leader was floored so easily…Batman.
“It’s the Bat!” J-Man said, still dazed. “RIP HIS WINGS OFF!!!”
Coe & Smirk responded by charging the Tomorrow Knight, only to miss him completely as he leapfrogged over the two henchmen. They doubled back, and Terry was ready; a punch to the gut had Smirk doubled over, and he followed up with a leg sweep which knocked over Coe. Two were down, but the fight wasn’t over as Scab, the muscle of the Jokerz, caught Terry from behind with a bear hug. It constricted him, but was nothing that wasn’t escapable as he used his suit to muscle Scab’s arms from around him, and repaid the attack with a right haymaker that sent him stumbling into a dining table.
“It’s always the same old song-and-dance with these Clo—!”
THOK!!!
Two feet planted firmly into McGinnis’ face quickly silenced him, along with knocking him on his back. As he sat up and wiped off his bottom lip, he didn’t have to guess where it came from. “Dee Dees.”
The two twin sisters, granddaughters of the infamous Harley Quinn, both flipped into place, surrounding Gotham’s protector. “Think you roughed him up there, Dee-Dee.” Delia said.
“Don’t worry, he can take some more Dee-Dee.” Deidre replied.
The two girls then charged the Tomorrow Knight, who responded by activating the suit’s Cloaking Device. But the Dee Dees weren’t fooled, and slid to a stop. “You can try that trick on us again and win.” Delia boasted.
“I know.”
Suddenly, Delia felt her legs taken out from under her, followed by Deidre being thrown forward right on top of her sister. Both were down, leaving only one to go.
“Hey, Bats!” J-Man said, on his feet and aiming right at him. “How ‘bout a Party Favor!?”
He laughed again as he squeezed the trigger, letting off shot after shot at McGinnis, forcing him on the move. Terry remained cool though, pulling out an Electric Batarang and flinging it at J-Man, disarming and shocking him at the same time. He the fell to his knees, before plopping down face first to the ground just as several dozens GCPD officers reached the scene.
“Nice job as always, kid.” Barbara said as she walked up to Batman. “You’re getting better in your response times.”
“The boss keeps me sharp.” Terry replied. “Looks like you can clean up things around—!”
“Commissioner!”
Barbara turned to her left to see an officer rushing towards her. “Two of ‘em got away Commissioner, the Dee-Dee Twins!”
“Looks like you’re night isn’t over just ye—!”
As Barbara turned back to face Batman, she found herself talking to thin air, and she smiled. “He’s getting more and more like the old man every day…”
Meanwhile, 2 blocks away, the clown girl duo ducked into a nearby alley, wanting to separate themselves from their captured gang-mates. “Well, looks like another heist blown, Dee-Dee.”
“You’re that surprised, Dee-Dee?” Delia asked. “Look who our leader was…”
“Yeah, not as suave and debonair as the original.” Deidre agreed. “So, think we should head home?”
Delia scoffed. “And deal with Nana Harley yelling about staying out late? No thanks.”
Deidre agreed. “Well, we can always lay low at Dottie’s. At least until we—!”
“SHH!!!”
Deidre grew annoyed. “Don’t shush me!”
“Get down, Dee-Dee!” Delia told her sister as she pointed down the alleyway. The two ducked behind a garbage can, and Deidre saw the reason her sister wanted silence; there was an opening at the end of the alley for delivery drop-offs, and it was currently in use. Even the Dee Dees knew 10pm at night wasn’t the norm for making deliveries, and it didn’t help that the “delivery men” were dressed in 3-piece suits and wielding plasma assault rifles. But what truly caught Delia’s eye was the nature of the delivery; there wasn’t much light shining through the alleyway, but it appeared to be…human; with a very large & deformed body on a large metal slab. The body was shackled down as well, though they didn’t know for whose protection.
“What do you think that is, Dee-Dee?” Deidre whispered.
“I don’t know…” Delia answered before spotting the name on the truck. “ReGen…isn’t that the new cosmetics company?”
“Ugh!” Deidre responded. “If they’re making stuff like that, remind me to never use them.”
She stood up to make her leave, tiring of spying on potential crime she wasn’t a part of. As she spun around though, her heel kicked the garbage can she was hiding behind, knocking all of its contents over, and alerting the “deliverers” of their presents.
“We got company! LIGHT ‘EM UP!!!”
A moment later, the Dee Dees found themselves on the pavement with laser blasts flying over their head. “Smooth move, Dee-Dee!” Delia told her sister.
“Hey don’t blame me, blame the garbage can!” Deidre said in her defense.
The two knew they couldn’t remain prone forever, and decided for countermeasures. Delia was first to her feet, and grabbing a nearby trash can lid, she flung it with all she had. It soared like a perfect discus throw, and took out three armed goons. Deidre was next to attack as she aimed for the fallen trash can in front of her, and gave it a blunt & powerful punt. The can rocketed through the air in a perfect arc, before landing on the remaining goons, effectively taking them out. Their heist may have been a bust, but the Dee Dees did have one victory tonight.
“Sorry to humiliate you like that boys…” Delia taunted while Deidre gave the raspberry. “…but you really should show some respect when ladies are present.”
Victorious, they high-fived each other before strolling back down the alleyway from which they came. But the sound of shackles breaking quickly brought an end to their jubilation. Turning around, the Dee Dees witnessed a frightening sight. The being that was bolted down had now broken free, and was moving towards them. It seemed to slide against the ground as it moved almost too fluidly. Whatever it was, the twin sisters knew that it wasn’t human.
They also knew they probably couldn’t fight it, so they opted for a tactical retreat. As they scrambled back down the alleyway though, Deidre felt something hit her from behind, and engulf her. She was propelled forward, coming to a stop when she hit a wall, leaving her barely able to move.
“DEIDRE!!!”
Delia quickly rushed over to help her sister, seeing her nearly encased by…what appeared to be mud. She braced herself, putting her foot up against the wall, and pulled on Deidre’s arm as hard as she could, until she finally freed her. They both fell to the pavement, just as another large ball of “mud” flew overhead and splattered against the wall. Not wanting to experience it again, the two took off running around the corner as fast as they could. They weaved through the maze-like back alleys of that neighborhood, until finally finding an opening to a main street. Unfortunately, it was also blocked off by several of Gotham City’s finest.
“FREEZE!!!!!!”
Sliding to a stop, the two realized there was nowhere else left to run, and put up their hands. As two cops went to cuff the Dee Dees, the Commissioner slowly approached them.
“You two always were the hardest to catch.” She said.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever! Just get us away from that thing!” Delia replied.
Barbara noticed the look of fear in their eyes. “What are you talking about?”
“That…MONSTER back there!” Deidre spoke up. “It was big and…icky. And was throwing this kind of…goop that hit me!”
“Yeah, tell it to the judge!” An officer replied as he ushered them towards a patrol car. It wasn’t uncommon for the Dee Dees to try to lie their way out of trouble, but Barbara couldn’t help but feel there was truth behind the words and the faces of the twin clown dynamos.
“And she wanted to meet with me?”
Terry asked that question over the Batmobile’s com system as he navigated through Gotham’s airways. It was 12 noon exactly, an odd time for the Dark Knight to be seen in his city, but from what Terry was told, it was an important matter.
“Barbara said Batman was needed for this…” Bruce told his assistant.
“Yeah, but right now?” Terry complained. “I mean I got classes in an hour, plus I still got errands to run…”
“Don’t worry about those errands.” Bruce said. “Besides, you could use this time, McGinnis. It’ll help distract you from—!”
“Don’t say it, Bruce!” Terry warned him, to which Bruce actively heeded, for all of 10 seconds.
“So you are still angry about the break-up.”
Bruce could hear Terry growling from the other end, and it brought a rare smirk to his face, reminding him of the trouble he had with women when he wore the cape & cowl.
“I’m not like some lovesick dog over this.” Terry countered. “I mean, if Dana wants to move to Paris and study abroad, who am I to stop her?”
“Concentrate on the matter at hand, McGinnis.” Bruce reminded him. “Barbara says they have a lead on the Chemical Smuggling case…”
“And she needs my help.” Terry surmised. “At least its something since Gotham’s been so quiet lately.”
“Quiet’s never a good thing in Gotham City.” Bruce mused.
At that moment Terry wanted to crack about Bruce’s Bat-paranoia, but thought better of it as he noticed he had reached the 5th District Precinct, where Barbara holds her office. Setting the Batmobile to hover, he ejected himself out and rocketed down the building to the Commissioner’s Office. Her blinds were shut, which made Terry curious to know what was going on inside. But as he sought to use the touch microphones on the fingers of his glove, the blinds swung open.
“Don’t even bother, I heard you coming from a mile away.” Barbara said, holding the strings to the blinds.
Terry just smirked as Barbara slid the window open, allowing him inside. “So what did you wanna see me for?”
“Gotham PD has been working on exposing an undercover smuggling ring.” Barbara explained. “Illegal chemicals are coming into the city and being sold under the table.”
“So who’s involved?” Terry asked. “Slappers? Splicers?”
“And a whole lot more.” Barbara continued. “Problem is we’ve never been close enough to bring the suspects we need into the light, until the botched robbery last night.”
“What, you mean with the Jokerz?” Terry inquired. “What do they have to do with it?”
“It wasn’t the ones you helped lock up, it was the two who got away.” Barbara clarified. “Upon fleeing the scene, they stumbled upon the smuggling operation. They say they took down several of them single-handedly, until some ‘Mud Beast’ broke loose and attacked them. All we were able to find in the area though were an abandoned truck and a metal slab.” She walked over to her desk and sat down behind it, maintaining eye contact with Terry. “I’m afraid that’s where you come in, kid. I need these two protected and I’m afraid my force just won’t do.”
“Wait a minute…” Terry said. “Which two are you…no…no, not them!”
Leaning back in her chair, Barbara activated and spoke into her intercom. “Alright, let them in.”
A moment later, the office door swung open, and Batman came face to face with the very two troublemakers he fought the night before, the Dee Dees. “No, not happening!”
“We aren’t too crazy about this either, boy scout.” Delia replied as the two sat down.
“Deidre & Delia Dennis, I’m sure you know them well.” Barbara stated. “To prevent a long-term stay in county, and with some coaxing from their grandmother, they’ve volunteered to testify against several suspects we’re holding who have ties to the case. But they need to be safe for 48 hours until the hearing.”
“Find some other superhero to play babysitter, I’m not doing this!” Terry told the Commissioner.
“The old man told me you’d have some animosity about this.” Barbara noted.
“That is an understatement!” Terry responded. “Those two, they know my identity!”
“It’s not like it’s helped us.” Deidre said in defense. “No one will believe some college kid is the feared and mighty Batman anyway.”
Terry ignored that statement. “Plus, they’re just a bunch of common hoods. How can you trust their word?”
“HEY! WE RESENT THAT!!!” Both Dee Dees yelled.
“Hoods or not, they’re the only lead we have right now.” Barbara countered. “And if we want to crack that smuggling ring, we’re gonna have to use them. I can’t force you into this job seeing as you’re not on the payroll…but you and I know how hard it is to bring down organized crime, especially in this city.”
Terry did know how hard it was. With all of the corporate connections white-collar criminals establish, it leaves them virtually untouchable. It was the main reason Batman was needed for Gotham again, to apprehend the crooks the police weren’t able to touch. Looking back at the Dee Dees though, he could sense the amount of trouble they’d get him into as they crossed their legs and stuck their tongues out at him. Though he severely did not want to…he went with his better judgment.
“Fine, I’ll babysit the brats.”
“Excellent.” Opening her desk drawer, Barbara pulled out a file and opened it, showing the Dee Dees rap sheet. “You’ll need to stay close to them for the 48 hours until the trial, so they’ve been enrolled in Gotham State.”
“Wonderful.” Terry lamented.
“Aw, come on boy scout!” Deidre said, hopping on Terry’s back. “I know you can show us a good time.”
“Probably in more ways than one…” Delia added as she teasingly ran her fingers up and down his chest.
To Terry’s credit, he maintained the serious & stalwart demeanor of Batman. But in his mind, one question rang out above all others, “I wonder if Bruce ever had to go through this…”
“TERRY!!!”
Maxine Gibson rushed over to the main gate of Gotham State University, carrying two school books close to her chest. When she reached then entrance though, she slowed down as she noticed the near-scowl on her friend’s face.
“Aw don’t tell me, you’re still bitter about the Dana breakup?” She asked, to which Terry shook his head. “Then what’s got you so down right now?”
Terry didn’t answer; he simply pointed behind him with his thumb. Leaning over, Max was shocked by the sight in front of her; both Dee Dees were standing there, dressed in twin provocative schoolgirl outfits which left little to the imagination. With blouses that revealed much of their bosoms, shamefully short skirts and thigh-high boots accentuated with fishnet stockings, they passed for strippers more than they did students at this Learning Sanctuary. Of course, their outfits weren’t what rattled Max on sight.
“DEE DEES!!!” She yelled, jumping back to defend herself.
“Calm down Max…” Terry told her. “…they’re with me.”
“Say what!?” Max responded. “Don’t tell me you’ve turned over to the Joker side…”
“It’s not what you think.” He explained. “I’m playing Nanny Duty for Commissioner Gordon.”
Needless to say, Max was confused by that statement. “Come again?”
“Look, those two stumbled upon some big smuggling operation after a failed heist.” Terry explained. “The cops caught them and agreed to let them off the hook—!”
“If they testified?” Max finished for him. “But how long do you have to keep them safe?”
“48 of the longest hours of my life.” Terry lamented, batting away a nearby rose in frustration.
“HEY!!!”
Alertly, Terry turned around, only to be kicked in the shin by a fuming Delia. “OWW!!! What the hell was that for!?”
She didn’t answer, instead attending to the wilted flower McGinnis slapped moments earlier. “Are you OK? Did he hurt you?”
“Whoa, someone’s a nature lover.” Max noted.
“That’s Delia for you.” Deidre replied. “She takes after her aunt. OOH, love the hair! But you could really use some clown makeup to complete the look.”
“I’m not a Joker.” Max angrily responded through her teeth.
“Your loss.” Deidre said. “Shame too, you certainly have the honkers for it.”
Before Max could question what she exactly meant by ‘honkers’, Deidre demonstrated for her…by reaching out and ‘honking’ Max’s breasts like they were horns. Max immediately dropped her books, wearing a look of embarrassment as the two Dee Dees grabbed hold of Terry’s arms and pulled him along, rushing off towards the main building.
“I’m really sorry, Max!” Terry yelled back to his friend.
He could practically see the steam shooting from her ears, but Max composed herself and followed after her friend and the two clown felons. It was 2pm, and both Terry & Max shared the last class together; Biology 101. Inside the building the four all scrambled to the classroom, barely making the bell as they took their seats in the small auditorium. The Dee Dees flanked their special guardian, sitting on both sides next to him and staring him down with flattering looks. That is, until Deidre noticed a student with a spiked purple Mohawk playing a portable video game being played right next to her.
“Hey, is that a 1080 CubeStation Portable?” She asked.
“Yeah.” The student answered, eyes focused on the screen. “Tryin’ to get past the 3rd Boss on Curb-Stompers; bloody cheap as hell!”
Leaning over to see the screen, Deidre assessed how the fight was going, before offering some advice. “Try jumping into the air before using your chainsaw on him.”
The punk first scoffed at that idea, but after noticing his health was minute, he decided to give it a try. And to his surprise, the tactic worked as he easily finished off his virtual foe. “Whoa, nice tip Clown Girl! Thanks!”
“Don’t mention it.” Deidre replied as she leaned back in her chair. Her help didn’t go unnoticed though, Terry and Delia were watching.
“My immature twin sister.” Delia commented. “Never met a game or toy she couldn’t lose herself in.” Deidre responded by sticking her tongue out at her sister. But a quick nudge by Terry got her attention as the professor began to address the class.
“Alright class, settle down.” He requested in a droll, monotone voice. “Now last time we left off, we were discussing pop culture trends and how they affect everyday life. Celebrities are often considered the pinnacle for appearance; especially for females, who often resort to plastic surgery to maintain their glamorous appear—!”
“Excuse me, Prof!”
Terry groaned as he saw Delia’s hand shoot into the air. “I think I disagree with your little statement.”
“Oh?” The professor reacted, eyebrow raised. “And on what ground is this disagreement based?”
What followed next were devious grins by both of the Dee-Dee twins as they looked at each other. And almost psychically, Terry could sense what was about to happen next. “Don’t you dare do it…”
But his warning fell on deaf ears as the Dee Dees went forward…and ripped open their blouses to reveal their jiggling breasts. Gasps echoed throughout the classroom, followed by wild cheers, mostly from the male students. Camera-phones were whipped out to take photographic evidence of this occurrence, as the Dee Dees continued to flash the class and their professor.
“They’re real, and their spectacular!” They both announced.
Sitting several rows back, Max could only shake her head as she saw Terry’s banging the table in frustration over and over again. “This is not gonna go well for his GPA.”
“Academic Probation!”
As Batman stood on the edge of the roof to the Gotham Federal Bank building, he stared out over the city he had sworn to protect. In his mind though, his personal life was currently taking priority. He couldn’t help but to vent them out loud, as the Dee Dees sat ‘innocently’ several feet behind him, waiting patiently. “Not even half a day and those two have me ready to be expelled! I can’t deal with those clowns!”
A moment later, Terry heard a somewhat strange sound coming from the other end of the line, one he hadn’t heard from Bruce Wayne since he’d known him. “Wait a minute…are you laughing!?”
“Remind me to tell you the time when I had to guard Harley Quinn from Rupert Thorn’s hit squad.” Bruce said with a smirk.
“I have no idea who Rupert Thorn is.” Terry replied. “Seriously, isn’t there some witness protection we can put them in?”
“If Barbara asked for you on this case then you’re needed.” Bruce reminded him. “They may be difficult, but you’ll have to handle it until we bust this ring.”
Terry sighed, knowing his mentor was right. “So, any leads?”
“I ran some tests on the mud that was found on one of the Dee Dees.” Bruce said. “So far they don’t match anything in my current database but its still searching.”
Terry let off an unhappy grunt. “Guess I’ll just have to do this the hard way.”
“Our guardian’s talking to himself.” Delia noted. “First sign of Schizophrenia, don’t you think Dee-Dee?”
“Oh yes.” Deidre agreed. “He’d be perfect for the Jokerz, Dee-Dee.”
“Stow it, you two.” Terry barked. “The only reason you’re here is so I can keep both eyes on you. Now—!”
KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
The explosion rattled the very building Batman & the Dee Dees stood upon. Gazing down to street level, Terry was easily able to discover the source; the ReGen Chemical Plant.
“Stay here, don’t move.” He ordered.
“Ooh, he’s gonna leave us alone, Dee-Dee.” Deidre replied.
“Awfully trustworthy, isn’t he Dee-Dee?” Delia added.
“No, not really.”
A smirk developed on Batman’s face as he pointed towards the ground. Looking down, the Dee Dees saw the reason for his grin; both of them had their legs shackled by bat-cuffs to a nearby gas pipe. “HEY!!!”
“Now you two be good and later we’ll get some ice cream.” The Tomorrow Knight remarked, before leaping off the roof, towards the scene.
“You enjoyed that a little too much.” Bruce commented.
“Yeah, like you didn’t do it with their grandmother.” Terry shot back.
Bruce stayed silent, knowing his young heir to the cape & cowl was right. The huge explosion created a large hole in the roof of the Plant, giving Terry easy entry. He flew in and landed, only to notice several thugs loading boxes onto a parked moving truck. But what caught McGinnis’ eye was the man who was leading the operation…
“Paxton Powers?”
Upon hearing his name, the former corporate bigwig and ex-con turned to face Gotham’s protector. “Batman…should’ve known you’d be a nuisance.”
“Guess you didn’t learn your lesson from last time you were arrested.” Terry told him.
Paxton straightened the collar on his shirt and walked towards the front of the truck. “Didn’t you hear? I was acquitted. The D.A. was unable to come up with substantial evidence.”
“Yeah, well this late night heist should be enough to bury you.” Batman countered.
Paxton smirked. “Not really, since no one will believe the word of a dead bat.”
Raising his hand, Paxton snapped his fingers, and his hired thugs dropped their boxes and drew their guns, opening fire. Batman was quick to avoid the blasts, and went on the offensive as he withdrew dual Batarangs and flung them with flawless accuracy, disarming 4 thugs and leaving only two. He pulled out a Batarang for them, but paused as he saw two familiar silhouettes flying down from the ceiling…Delia & Deidre.
They pounced onto the last armed thugs, knocking them out before flipping off and landing right next to their guardian. “Naughty-naughty B-Man, having fun without us.”
“Oh joy.” Terry lamented sarcastically.
“Well, if it isn’t the circus rejects from last night.” Paxton commented.
“What did you call us!?” Delia fumed.
“Wait a minute…” Terry interrupted. “You saw HIM last night?”
“Yeah, we saw Mr. Monkey-suit.” Deidre replied.
“And you just conveniently forgot to tell me or Gordon about it!?” Batman continued.
“You know I’d love to stick around for this horrible comedy routine, but I have pressing business matters.” Paxton then flipped a lever at the truck’s rear, which unlocked the rear door. “But don’t worry, I left you a playmate.”
As the door slowly slid open, Terry was about to give chase as Paxton and his thugs fled the scene. However, Bruce’s voice over his communicator halted him. “Terry, get out of there!”
“I am!” Terry answered. “Paxton’s behind the smuggling, and—!”
“No, get airborne!” Bruce warned. “I’ve analyzed the mud, it belongs to—!”
“Crap!”
Deidre’s declaration drew Terry’s attention, as he noticed the Dee Dees slowly backing away in fear. He then turned towards the truck and spotted the reason for their fear; a large brown creature with a gelatinous humanoid form, known in the past by Gothamites as Clayface.
He hopped out from the back, and turned to the three. “So you’re the new Bat, huh? Let’s see if you’re as easy to break as the old one…”
