Summary: Who's in charge? Bruce or Selina? Batman or Catwoman?
Spoilers: Takes place after Batman #616 but before Jeph Loeb's added piece in Wizard Magazine that also took place between issues 616 and 617 - phew - try saying THAT three times fast! Anyhoo - this is all during the whole 'Hush' arc.
Author's Notes: This entered my head after seeing Jess' Batman/Catwoman 'This Ship' Icons - that and I felt I owed her for bitchin' out that girl who ripped me off - LOL, she made me feel better so here's a gift for her!
Selina loved nothing better than this. Swinging through the cool night air far above Gotham City, every twist and turn of her agile body taking her in a new direction. This was freedom. Bliss. Pure and simple. Nothing could be better than this.
But then she heard the resounding swish of another line behind her. The flap of cape in the breeze.
A smirk took her lips. Maybe there was something better.
She landed gracefully on a rooftop and turned almost expectantly. A dark shadow fell before her feet and slowly rose, forming into the shape of a man. Batman. Or should she call him Bruce Wayne now? It was so strange - so weird, to think that beneath that mask he was actually Bruce.
But he was, she had seen it for herself. He had shown her. Now that she looked back on it, truly thought about it, it made a lot of sense. Wayne wasn't the kind of man to write home about. He was non-descript and one-dimensional. A pretty playboy millionaire. He was more a facade than anything else.
The figure before her - the hero, the man, the bat - he was real and had much more depth. So many layers. And frankly, she couldn't wait to peel them off one by one. His face was set, handsome mouth in a grim line, "Selina, why did you leave."
As was his way, it was a statement as opposed to a question. And he was referring, of course, to Wayne Manor, where she had currently been staying ever since the incident with Lady Shiva, one of Ra's al Ghul's top assassins. Shiva had torn her apart - breaking bones, ripping flesh. All because she had been keeping an eye on Talia, Ghul's kidnapped daughter. For him.
In matter of fact, it was thanks to Talia that Selina had even survived at all. The herbs she had brought had restored her face and health in a matter of hours - Bruce knew this. But even knowing it, he'd been…surprisingly coddling. He insisted on lots of bed rest and had had Alfred doting on her like crazy and as much fun as it was to have your own personal butler - Selina just wasn't the type.
Besides, Alfred wasn't necessarily the stereotypical kind of 'help'. Whenever he had come to check on her and serve her needs he'd snaked in questions and comments. All of them valid but none the less, it had grown tiring…
And she told him this.
"You can't expect a cat to curl up and sleep all day. I had to get out. Stretch."
"You can do that without swinging across Gotham several hundred feet up."
"True. But this is how I relax," she turned and lifted her goggles, green eyes playful, "Don't you?"
He didn't smile nor reply but she knew the an was was 'yes' anyway, in many ways they were alike…
"Maybe. But I don't take risks, either."
And in many ways they were different.
"Pfft! That's the biggest load of bull I've heard and you know it. Give me some credit, Ba - Bru…hmm, what should I call you these days?"
Once again no answer and she sighed, rolling her eyes, "Look, I'm fine. All right. No reason to get your tights in a bunch. I told you, I don't want to be one of those strings that trips you up."
"I told you, you won’t be."
"And I also told you I won't be your wonder toy. Not some little birdy on your shoulder. You don't see me running around with 'kittens' at my side. I'm all about being solo. I will not be put on a leash."
"I don't know, I think you'd look pretty good in a cat collar."
She froze for a moment, eyes widening as his deadpanned words sunk in, "You made a joke."
"I've been known to from time to time."
She couldn't help but beam, "I know, but that doesn't mean I don't love it any less when you do."
They stood in silence for a few moments, looking at one another thoughtfully. The night was mostly quiet save for a few noises issuing from below but nothing dangerous or warning - just common traffic.
Selina almost wished there was a distraction as the stare between them this time held so much more weight, Hell, any look between them these days seemed more heated, more meaningful…ever since the kiss…
She thought over what they had discussed and feeling the need to break the moment between them she spoke, her voice almost nothing more than a choked whisper, "You're missing my point. I don't want to distract you. You shouldn't be so…I mean, you need to not - to not…"
She wanted to say care but couldn't bring herself to do it. She should be happy to see that he did care. Bruce - or rather Batman - wasn't the kind to show any kind of emotion whatsoever. Period. Frankly the fact he was giving her this kind of concern could almost be construed as romantic.
It would be much more characteristic of hot tot to give a damn.
Or rather, to give a damn but to hide it and not let it show.
But here he was, his heart out on his sleeve…
"I know. I just don't want you injuring yourself further. I need you on this."
Or maybe not.
Selina's bubble deflated. Oh. This wasn't about her so much as it was about the case. She almost sighed again but managed to avoid it. She had no reason to feel hurt, after all, a few seconds ago she had been lambasting his supposedly over affectionate reactions.
And if she was in his position she would be sorely focused on the task at hand as well. If someone was setting out to make it their personal mission to mess with her life…
She shook her head, "No problem. I'll be there when you need help…you know," a small grin took her, "It's rather flattering for you to ask - for you to…to need help. To need...me."
Again, silent. Now this was the man she knew, the one of small or no words. And damn if it still wasn't sexy as hell. She turned to him, grin growing into a catty smile, "You know, I do so love when you chase after me though. How long have we been doing this dance? Swinging from rooftop to rooftop - you following me or me following you…maybe it's time we just stopped. Let ourselves be caught."
She was close to him now, in that space of his. The heat flickered up between them again and their was another set of heavy stares but she didn't try and break it this time. She hadn't been in control before and it had caught her off guard but now she was in charge of the situation. Once she made up her mind to do something, she went out and did it.
She had been a thief after all, she loved to capture things, to take them…
What better than this?
And deep in her secret heart, where she locked away the old fashioned girlish behaviors, she had envisioned this. Fantasized. How many nights or early mornings had she gone to bed and pictured this very scenario in her mind's eye. Him before her - them on a rooftop, kissing, then touching, caressing, …not stopping, going further…
Only recently she had fulfilled the first part of the fantasy, could she possibly do the rest?
He actually, amazingly, had the decency to look slightly startled. Eyes widening behind the mask, mouth dropping open a tad, "Selina…I don't think-"
"No," she put a finger to his mouth, stemming the tide of words, "Quite the opposite. You do think. Too much. Now relax - I promise I won't bite. I may scratch but…"
She trailed off, her arms working their way around that taunt, muscular neck. Her head tipped to one side, lips almost ready to settle on his, but she couldn't help but toss in one more teasing remark, "Remember what I told you, you play your cards right and there's more to come, well…you've been playing just about right - time for you to win. And claim your prize."
Once again her sweet, soft mouth covered his, at first working away gently. As always he was strong as steel, tense, not giving an inch but this time she worked especially hard to try and melt that cold exterior, her body cuddling in close to his, head angling to one side in an attempt to deepen the kiss.
And just as before, he relented just enough, mouth parting to allow access, hands rising slowly to run along her own arms, draw her into a slight embrace. This was how it had come to be between them. Her the aggressor who thought herself to be in control and he, the demure responder who kept things at bay and who was truly in control because he made sure it never went too far or too long.
But not this time, Selina resolved in her mind. She had to have more. She needed more. There would be more than merely her kissing him. Sure, he kissed back but this time around - she would see there was something more vital. She tightened her hold around his neck and brought her chest within intimate contact of his, breasts crushing onto the hard planes of his chest.
Her mouth eased from his, a scant whisper leaving her, "Touch me. Kiss me back."
"I am."
"No," she kissed him again, red mouth pressed against his, warm breath seeping out to mix with his own, "You're not."
"Selina…"
"I won't break. Let go, Bruce, just let go."
Maybe it was the use of his name, maybe it was the offer but something wild and dangerous seemed to snap inside him. She could almost see it behind the mask, their close proximity giving that away to her.
But soon enough all thought fled as he gathered her roughly against him with one arm while, with the other opposite hand, he tore the rest of her mask down, goggles falling aside as his gloved fingers threaded though her short dark hair, sending ripples of pleasure along her spine.
Hot…his lips were hot, and his mouth was hungry as it settled back over hers. When she opened so easily for him, she could have sworn she heard a hoarse, inarticulate sound issue from deep within his throat.
His tongue was exploring…teasing her own with its tip…grazing her teeth…tangling with hers in an onslaught that might have felt like an invasion but was not. While he was anything but gentle the sensations he generated sizzled, skittering throughout her body, settling liquid lust deep in her belly and lower between her thighs.
Her body ached and she tried to relieve it, still rubbing up against him, caressing his body with her own. Suddenly, somehow his hand came in contact with her ribcage and then her breast. A cry escaped her, coming up between their kiss but he did not draw back, hot mouth, still wet from their kisses, continuing to search hers, hand tentatively remaining in place.
Then it began to move just slightly, closing over the flesh beneath it. In contrast to his kisses, his thumb gently grazed her nipple bringing it swiftly to a point even through the material of her costume and she heard a moan, taking a moment to realize it had come from her own throat before it broke into a sob that was his name.
Bruce was lost, drowning in the sweet, heady pleasure of her and he knew better. Dammit - he knew better! He was in the cape and cowl for god's sake. He wasn't Dick or Tim, he was old enough to control his emotions. To restrain himself.
But for some reason he was unbearably hot. It had been much, much too long since Bruce Wayne, supposed playboy, had been a playboy. He couldn't remember the last time he'd had a woman in his bed. And even when he had, he'd always had to hold himself back, reign in some kind of control.
And as Batman he was always in control. He showed about as much emotion as a robot. It was necessary, vital, in order to pull off what it was that he did. Hell, it was actually who he truly was. Always had been. Ever since his parents…
Being empty, devoid - that was the real Bruce. The other one, full of plastic smiles and dry laughs was a complete fake. A phony. Hell, it was so much of an act he could have received an award for it. The performance real and method.
But with her he never knew quite who he was.
He couldn't be the fake, phony Bruce.
He couldn't be the indifferent, intently focused Bat either.
He couldn't even be the real Bruce he'd come to know.
He was someone else - someone he didn't know…
And that person was always hungry and lusting, aching…needing…wanting…
And not in control.
Which was who he was now as his one arm unbanded from around her, empty hand insatiably eager to match its' twin, covering her other breast. Her mouth left his, head tipping back as her hands took hold of his mask, tipping it back so she could see him, she had to see him - his face - as he did this to her…
He didn't seem to notice or rather, he was too intently focused on something else as he latched his teeth onto the exposed column of her neck, sucking and biting. Sounds of pleasure peeled out of her as she writhed under his ministrations, her knees uneasy.
He drew away just enough to draw her in deeply next to him, cape wrapping around them as he maneuvered them backward until she rested against a tall column of brick, whether a chimney or part of the roof structure she didn't know and frankly didn't care as one leg wrapped around his, pressing them even closer, intimate contact almost too intimate…
Suddenly, dimly, she seemed to realize she hadn't meant to go this far. Some groping in the dark maybe, sure, but this was beyond that now. It was certainly beyond their normal level of kissing and touching at any rate. Now it had crossed into some new, unknown territory and while it felt a little dangerous it also felt exciting. She wanted so much more.
But even as Bruce settled his mouth down upon her neck again she couldn't help but speak up, voice nothing more than a husky whisper, "You know, this isn't really the place I had in mind for this…it isn't really where we should…the first time…"
He drew away, eyes slightly narrowed. Her lips looked more full and lush, deeply colored thanks to his rough kisses and marks were already blossoming under the flesh of her neck. The sights sank in much more than her words did, "You want to stop."
Statement. Not question.
She shifted in his embrace, "Sort of. I want to…wait before we do anything…permanent. Call me old fashioned, but I do like certain things being more…special."
His head lowered a moment and she could see him hiding inside himself again, could almost hear the shields dropping. She took his face in her hands, directing those blue eyes to her own, "Hey. Don't. All right? You didn't frighten me. Hell, I loved what you were doing to me - loved how you let go for once. It was…breathtaking. No, better, it was amazing. Phenomenal. But like you said, I don't think now is the time. Or the place. But…now you've gotten a taste of what I have to offer. What I'm willing to give you. So maybe now you'll take the next step, make the arrangements…"
It was funny to hear it that way. As if it were a business deal, but it was the best way to approach it with Bruce - or rather Batman, and she knew that. Could see by the recognition in his eyes that he knew it too. He gave a sharp nod and drew away.
Immediately she missed the heat of his body, his mouth and for a scant second she regretted her decision but she knew it was the right thing to do.
When she got Bruce - or was it Batman? She shook her head, not sure she could decide right now. All she knew though was when she got him - finally got him - she wanted all of him.
And it had to be some place better than someone's rooftop.
As her breath returned she rearranged herself, hair and costume slightly rumpled when she noticed Bruce still looking at her. He'd put the mask back in place, Batman once more and without so much as a smile, he said, "Now look who's thinking too much."
A smile curved lip lips again and before she could say, 'Another joke', he'd shot the batline and was gone, swinging away swiftly into the night. She finally allowed the groan of disappointment to escape her but then sighed, shaking her head, smile still in place.
Well, she was certainly more relaxed. And she sure as hell would get him next time. After all, she was the one in control. Right?
Not sure of the answer to that either, she tossed out her own line and swung away.
