Archive Cleanup Project

Why this is being done

Simply, this is being done to make it so that the database itself is healthy, and to maintain its health. Without a healthy database, there IS no archive. The database for the entire archive is roughly 6GB in size (after some serious pruning), so there are things that have to be done to make it so that the old software works as well as we can manage. We're in the process of writing specialized software for the entire archive, so that it will be better able to handle the load, and offer many new options and protections. As this is just starting, don't expect to even see a beta version of the new fiction portal for approximately another year. It takes time to write a new software package from the ground up, which will also work with the data that is pre-existing.

Initial Changes

You (the users) have already seen the initial changes, which was the re-categorization throughout the subdomains, as well as the elimination of certain subcategories within the archive, and moving them to the forum. The forum software is better able to handle this, at this point in time, which is why this was done. The elimination of those subcategories is what helped prune the database down to a more manageable size, and the initial re-categorization helped to stabilize the database itself, and how the php program actually parses the data within the database.

5. FAQs Link:

The FAQ section in the forum is accessible to all. Part of what happened in September 2007 (approximately the 3rd) was that those files were actually deleted from the domain. So, they've been recreated as much as was possible, and are now located in the forum. You'll notice that there is a subforum entitled “FAQ requests”. That forum is exactly as titled, where one would request a FAQ to be created. Anything other than FAQ requests will be deleted. All such postings within the varioussubdomains are and will continue to be deleted.

Sub level ability

The archive software, at present, only supports three levels of categories. The first level is non posting, and is also viewable from the side menu. The second level is the first level where posting is able to be done. The third level down is also a posting category. In the software being written, we are looking to make unlimited sub levels, which will help the data handling overall. 2nd level categories which have 200 or more stories are being made, or have been made top level categories in their respective subdomains. 2nd level categories with 75 to 199 stories are being set up and sorted for later movement to top level, should that category end up growing to that point. Once a 2nd level category becomes a top level category, we can then add pair specific categories for those top levels, as a 3rd level category. Pair specific categories need to have ten or more stories in order to be created. Where we find in the process of the cleanup that that is not so, those stories will be moved up a level to their parent categories, and the 3rd level category deleted. Order in which the work is being done The work is being done in this order, for subdomains:

Repairs being done

There were a series of database crashes over the years. The first, and worst of them occurred in 3rd quarter 2003. That was followed by two minor crashes in 2005 and 2006. As a result of these crashes, there were a series of glitches, as well as major corruptions (from 2003) that need to be corrected. By correcting the corrupted and near unreadable data from the big crash, this makes it so that it's not being deleted, which was the only other option available to me for this part of the project. The 2003 crash scrambled much of the data, and that is what I am manually going in to the database to repair, field by field. You're all familiar with the garbage words from August 2003 and before, that shows up in those stories? That's the corruption I'm referencing, which is being repaired. The 2005 and 2006 crashes created some odd glitches, which are also being repaired. Orphaned chapters (chapters which are linked to the story, but not the author), duplicate orphans chapters, things like that. All of that is being fixed, story by story.

Windows Vista specific problems

There are problems that Vista has with older php and java, which affect how you can do certain things within the archive. You'll find that mostly with story uploading. So, for those of you who have Vista, to add a story, first you add it to the subdomain you want (it'll upload to the top level you want, then default to whatever is first in hierarchy for second level). Then, you must go back and edit the story, to make it so that it's actually IN the 2nd level category you want, and at the same time, if there is a 3rd level category where it would best fit, you can then select that sub sub category. As more incompatibilities appear with Vista and the current archive software, you'll be able to find them in the forum, in the bug tracker module. These are all problems which will be resolved with the rewrite of the archive software. The bug tracker module is open to all, and can be found here: http://www2.adult-fanfiction.org/forum/index.php/tracker/
